Ubuntu Installation :: Dell System: Unable To Start Utility Partition

Jun 20, 2010

The system is a Dell 530n. It came preinstalled with Ubuntu 8.04. I didn't care for the way Dell handled its repositories (they don't keep them current) so I installed Ubuntu 10.04.

Now when I select "F12 Boot Options" while the BIOS is bringing things to life, I still get the various boot options, however, when I select "Utility Partition" all I get is "Not found. No boot device available."

For those not familiar, the Dell Utility Partition is a hidden partition that has various utilities to help troubleshoot hardware problems.

What did Ubuntu 10.04 do and how do I fix this?

Installation :: Utility For Recovering Partition Table - Testdisk?

Oct 8, 2010

I had a tri boot of Win 7 /XP and Mint...I was using EasyBCD 2.0 as a boot manager...I booted Mint by configuring the NeoGrub option in Easy BCD..I wanted to uninstall Win 7 and so what I did was the following

1. Edited BCD bootloader settings ...Marked XP as my default and deleted Win 7 entry...

2. Logged out and wiped my Win 7 partition

With my fingers crossed , i rebooted but Easy BCD booted flawlessly with 2 choices XP and Mint(GRUB)...As Easy BCD is not meant for XP, I thought of restoring original NTLDR of XP so that things would be in place and thinking that this cud avoid problems of detection by other Linux OS I deleted manually the Easy BCD menu.lst file and NeoGrub.mbr in my root...That was it , after I rebooted, I got boot screen of EasyBCD but whichever option I select,I got an error message that address not Valid-NTLDR not found or something like that I booted my XP live CD and like many times before ran

1.Fixmbr
2.Fixboot
3.bootcfg /rebuild

After that , now when I reboot , I am getting "Invalid Partition Table" On booting from a linux CD , I can see the files are in place..I have to get boot sector and partition table fixed...

Networking :: Unable To Configure Wireless Network On Dell Laptop And Oracle System / Fix It?

May 26, 2010

I am a first time Linux user - though I've Unix and Windows experience. So though I can follow your most tech instructions, I'll need some hand-holding.

Need help getting my wireless network to work on my newly installed Oracle Linux on Dell laptop.

Not sure what wireless card is installed, or it's mac address (though I can boot into windows and get that info, I don't want to - it'll be kind of a let down if I can't fix it all thru Linux).

Install has detected a Broadcom wired card, but not the wireless. Funny thing is that it detected the Bluetooth.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Install 10.10 - 10.04 On A Dell 1525 With A USB / Enable This?

Oct 13, 2010

I will say this now; I am still in high school, so forgive my stupidity. I am trying to install either 10.10 or 10.04 on a Dell 1525. It has no operating system on it, and the CD/DVD drive is nonexistent. I have tried to install 10.10 on it using a USB, with both UNetbootin and Pen Drive Linux. Using either one, both end up freezing at the "Preparing to Install" screen. When trying to install 10.04, it will not load, even after 24 hours. On the loading screen, I pressed F1 to view the terminal and got this output:

(process:352): GLib-WARNING **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0)
Killed

I got all downloads from their home websites, www.ubuntu.com, www.pendrivelinux.com, and www.unetbootin.sourceforge.net. I have spent all my spare time since the newest release trying to fix whatever problem there is, so does anyone know what I did wrong?

Ubuntu :: Looking For Partition Analysis Utility?

Aug 11, 2010

Is anyone aware of a utility that can show all the files in a partition and their sector locations? This would seem like something that file recovery software would have to be able to figure out in the process of recovering deleted files, but not sure if any utility would actually display the information in that manner. Before anyone asks, I don't think I really NEED to know that information, but I'm just curious to see how the sectors are allocated as the partition fills up and files are created and deleted. Prior to resizing a partition smaller it would be interesting to see if data has to be moved from the end of the partition because it occupies sectors that will be lost due to the resizing operation.

Ubuntu Installation :: Reinstall On Dell Mini Via System Restore - Boot Error

Feb 1, 2010

My Mini13 came with hardy preloaded, and it's got pretty messed up since, so I'd like to restore factory OS via a grub entry that looks like this:
title System Restore
root (hd0,2)
chainloader +1
boot

This points to a partition which, when mounted, has this stuff in it:
bootfs.img initrd0.img install.sh logo.png syslinux.cfg vmlinuz
boot.msg install.cfg ldlinux.sys rootfs.img vesamenu.c32

I'm not a computer, but that looks pretty good to me but when I select this grub option it just says:
Boot Error
Is there a log or something that might give me more info about the error?

Fedora Installation :: 'Missing Operating System' After 10 Install On Dell M6400?

Jan 31, 2009

I have installed Fedora 10 on a Dell M6400. It has 2 disks in a mirror raid. It came with Windows Vista, but I am not doing a dual boot setup. I have formattet the disk with this installation.I downloaded http://ftp.crc.dk/fedora/linux/relea...0-i386-DVD.iso, burned the DVD and did the install check. It passed the check. The installation went fine, but after the first reboot I am getting "Missing operating system".

I have no idea where to begin... Could the installation media be faulty after all? I there anyway to get passed this, without reinstalling? I know this may have something to do with the boot loader, but I don't know anything about it.I have installed Fedora 4,5,6,8,9 and this never happened to me before, but then again, I did all these installations on my old Dell Latitude.... Could this have something to do with the new hardware?

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Install Kubuntu 10.4 - Unable To Find A Medium Containing A Live File System

Aug 15, 2010

I cannot install Kubuntu (or Unbuntu) 10.4 on my husband's computer. I have spent 5 hours on this and cannot get anywhere. I am deeply frustrated. The iso I burned to CD is good (works on 2 other computers). His computer will not boot from USB, no matter what I do to the drive order in BIOS. After loading the blue screen with the Kubuntu logo on it (and the blue-white dots), the screen changes to black and shows the following text:

BusyBox v1.13.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.13.3-1ubuntu11) built-in shell (ash) (initrafs) Unable to find a medium containing a live file system.

He really needs to get rid of WinXP. Kubuntu is what I have on my computer (and love it!). Here is some info about his computer:

OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600
OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation

Ubuntu Installation :: Separate "settings" Partition But Common Home Partition On System With 2 Distro

Feb 7, 2010

I was surprised not to find an existing thread on this anywhere, as I would expect this to be a common problem: I have the following partitions on my eee PC 100HE:

10GB Windows XP
5GB Linux Mint 8
5GB Ubuntu 9.10 NBR (awesome distro by the way!)
130GB Home partition shared by Linux Mint and Ubuntu NBR
2GB Swap partition shared by Linux Mint and Ubuntu NBR

I installed Ubuntu NBR after Mint. Immediately after install, the panel layout, menus and colour scheme were slightly messed up - presumeably because they had been "adopted" from the Mint settings in the home folder. I corrected them easily, but now I have the same problem in Mint. Is there any way I can get both distros to use the same /home folder, but different settings (i.e. the /home/username/. folders)? Can I get these settings folders put on a different partition for example?

And is this problem due only to the fact that these are 2 Ubuntu-based distros? Or will I have the same problem if/when I replace Mint with another distro, such as Fedora or Moblin?

Ubuntu :: Hibernation On Windows 7 Dual Boot - Under Disk Utility Partition Is Not Marked As Bootable

Sep 29, 2010

I have been having problems hibernating my windows 7 partition recently. It happened approximately right after I set up the dual boot.

I have found other topics where it says to make sure that the windows 7 partition is marked as the active partition. I have since done so and it has not changed anything. I did it with Partition Magic on Windows. I did find it suspicious though that my Dell Recovery partition is labeled as boot while the Windows one is marked as Active and System.

However when I looked at it using disk utility in Ubuntu the windows 7 partition is marked as Bootable while the recovery partition is not.

Hibernation works on Ubuntu with a couple error messages while shutting down and some weird screen issues while booting up. But it ends up working decently.

Under Disk Utility the Ubuntu Partition is not marked as Bootable. Should it be?
