Ubuntu Installation :: DVD Drives Absent After Lucid Reinstall

Aug 7, 2010

I recently re-installed lucid on a machine with two working DVD writers, one SATA, the other IDE. After the re-install, neither drive appears to be recognized. Putting an blank CD into either used to cause a pop-up that would ask me if I want to run k3b, but now it doesn't. If I use an external USB DVD writer, I do get that pop-up. Sadly my external USB DVD writer apparently writes unreadable disks, so it is not part of a long-term solution.

Ubuntu Installation :: Deleted, And Now Can't Reinstall Lucid?

Jul 13, 2010

I deleted Ubuntu off of my laptop, because I was having some issues with it (I had lost some of my icons in Software Center, couldn't access my Yahoo Mail etc..). I deleted it using this method. I then went into my Windows Vista OS, and accessed Disk management via Control Panel. The partition Linux was previously on was Unallocated, and I had a D partition which was Windows recovery. I then shrunk my C (main Windows) partition down. I deleted the D partition. So now I have the C partition, and a large unallocated partition. I was planning on installing Ubuntu from CD onto this unallocated partition. I am using the same CD I had previously used to install Ubuntu. My roommate was also using the same CD today to install Ubuntu on his computer. I know the CD works.

So when I inserted the Ubuntu CD it loaded the first couple of screens. It got to the purple screen where the install text would normally have appeared and then continues to load.... but the "do you want to install? etc..." text did not come up. It then loaded to a black screen, loaded back to the purple screen, reads the disc, keeps loading... and loading... and nothing ever comes of it.I tried again, this time when the first purple screen comes up, I hit enter. I get the language select. I then get the options. I click install Ubuntu. it then starts loading... and loading... black screen, purple screen, black screen with text... but nothing comes of it.My windows is working fine. I don't know why it won't install

Ubuntu Installation :: Reinstall 10.04 Lucid Lynx / "Could Not Locate Remote Server"?

May 15, 2010

I upgraded from 9.10KK to 10.04LL recently. The process did not go well. I was first instructed to update KK, which I did. The update and subsequent upgrade had various difficulties, the specifics of which I do not recall. 10.04 ran, with various errors and abnormalities, for a couple days.

I have a Compaq Presario, SR1503WM with 750 meg of RAM. I normally boot to Ubuntu on my primary harddrive, but can redirect to a Win2K boot from the other drive. I'm in Windows now, sending this.

If I do a normal boot now, to Ubuntu, and select FF or Opera, I get "Could not Locate Remote Server". It suggests I uncheck "Work Offline". I do and this still gets me nowhere.

I went to System/Admin/Network Connections and all of the tabs were empty. In the WIRED tab, I clicked on ADD and a new WiredConnection1 was established, and, after reboot, is still there, but it does nothing.

I have a cable connecting me to the modem, haven't tried to install wireless yet. This has been sufficient for months, and as I said, still works for Windows.

I think I should go ahead and ReInstall 10.04LL. I upgraded without an install disk.

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Mount Drives After Windows Reinstall

Feb 27, 2010

I have a windows XP Pro machine and also a Server running ubuntu, the server was built for me and the builder is no longer available for consultation. The server drives which were on my desktop beside my C drive were working flawlessly allowing me access until windows started running quite badly which meant I had to reinstall it. After the reinstall I could not see the drives displayed and I am unable to access them from windows. And also not able to mount them. The server has not been switched off at any time and does not even have a monitor or keyboard or mouse. I have not done anything to change any settings to it. I have zero knowledge of the system. My windows administrator password is exactly the same I have looked on the server and my files are intact I just cant access them from windows which I need to do.

I got the following details off the server:
KERNAL LINUX 2.6.27.5 - 117. fc10.i686
GNOME 2.24.1
MEMORY 881.4 MiB
Processor AMD LE 1620
Samba Server Version 3.2.4-0 fc10

I was told the drives should appear on their own but that's not happening I am not able to sight them at all file sharing and printer sharing is enabled.

Ubuntu Security :: Lock The CD / DVD When Absent

May 7, 2010

i tried to make a recommendation ( ups that link ain't comes from me - i only looked for a word in a dictionary ) about traveling around with a laptop. i talking about my own experinace ( sitting in a train go to dinner - chain my laptop but - DVD-drive?? ) for GUI user i think it will be a nice option in the screensaver setup to lock the CD/DVD drive and thus should be very easy to implement by the "eject" command. just have another buttom "lock/unlock" the drive in the menue. think it's usefull and easy to implement.
--> ecject -i 1 / 0. i use this on my sony - works. i know it possible to bypass this - but this will take some much more time.

Ubuntu :: USB Drives Not Working After Upgrade To Lucid?

May 16, 2010

After upgrading my wife's machine from Karmic to Lucid 64bit, USB drives will not automount and do not show in Nautilus. If I lsusb the drive is shown. I have tried several things - installing hal, removing the legacy floppy in the BIOS, sudo modprobe -r floppy and rebooting but nothing works.

I have tried with several flash drives, all work and automount on my computer (a clean install of Lucid) but none will work on the upgraded machine.

Ubuntu :: Automatically Skipping Fstab-listed Usb-hdd During Boot When Absent?

May 18, 2010

I have a usb-hdd at one location that I use for backup purposes. It is listed (by its specific label, not uuid because I don't want to go through the hassle of changing this when changing backup drives or adding one at a different location. Now, since upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04, I get the following message during boot when the usb-hdd is not present and thus not attached:The disk drive for "/media/backup" is not ready yet or not presentI need to press S to skip mounting manually, whereas 9.10 just ignored that fstab entry and continued booting. How can I get the old behavior back? Is there an option I can give in fstab that mounts the drive at bootup when present and ignores it when not?

Perhaps an even better solution would be to let the drive be mounted according to the fstab entry whenever it is attached (be it at bootup or at any other moment): is this possible?elated to that: are drives unmounted/mounted in a suspend/resume cycle?

Debian Configuration :: Wlan0 Absent - Card Definitely Working

Jul 7, 2010

I'm having problems getting my wireless network working. The same problem exists in both Debian 5.04 and Ubuntu 8.04. I'm using a Sonet ZEW2500P USB wireless card, which shows up when I look at lsusb. The card works under Windows, so its not a hardware problem.

When I run iwconfig, wlan0 simply doesn't show up on the list. It doesn't go by any other name either. I've tried adding iface wlan0 inet dhcp auto wlan0 to my /etc/network/interfaces file, but to no effect. I've tried using both the rt2000usb driver and the old rt2570 driver, and made sure both are not loaded at the same time using lsmod, but this doesn't help.

I wanted to try the CONFIG_NET_RADIO enable/rebuild kernel technique, but I can't find CONFIG_NET_RADIO anywhere in my autoconf.h file!

I assume someone will want to see a log file of some kind - just let me know which one (and where I can find it).

Ubuntu :: My Lucid System Will Only Boot With 2 Sata Drives Installed?

Feb 14, 2011

My system won't boot unless I have 2 sata drives. It doesn't matter what's on the second one. It even boots if the second "disk" is a powered sata to IDE adapter attached to an unpowered IDE drive. If I don't have the second drive I get this when I try to boot:

Alert! /dev/disk/by-uuid/ ...<your UUID>.... does not exist,I don't see anything that seems odd to me in my /etc/fstab file.

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.

#
# Use 'blkid -o value -s UUID' to print the universally unique identifier

# for a device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name

# devices that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
proc /proc proc nodev,noexec,nosuid 0 0[code]....

I've done the whole use a live disk, chroot into my system and reinstall the kernel to no avail. uname -r gives -- 2.6.32-28-generic

Fedora Installation :: Reinstall Grub After A Windows Installation Deleted It?

This is partly a note to myself for the future and a guide to anyone who experiences similar issues.

So, I had to reinstall Windows XP since my previous installation gave me a blue screen error due to reasons unfathomable. Naturally, this deleted the GNU Grub and I could not login to my Fedora.

I read that apparently booting from a DVD installation offers an option to enter the rescue mode. I did not have a DVD, I only had the LiveCD so I had to figure out a way to reinstall Grub from the LiveCD. The following method seemed to do the trick.

Run the LiveCD and open Terminal.

However, after a day or two of inactivity (apart from remotely logging in for SSH), the computer goes into a state where the screen is blank and it is unresponsive (and no longer allows access by SSH, FTP, or SVN server access). I have to reboot the computer to use it again, which I can't always do when I'm traveling. I inquired about this previously -but I'm convinced the solution may be more complicated than suggested because I don't have compiz turned on and the computer's power management is already set so that it's never supposed to sleep. I tried to install 10.04 fresh from a Live CD, but it freezes where it asks me how I want to use my partitions so I can't even reinstall
