General :: Reinstall Grub After Windows Instln?

Nov 19, 2010

I had a dual boot system - windows in primary active /dev/sda1 and fedora in /dev/sda5 onwards till /dev/sda7 ( /boot, / and swap partitions).I reinstalled windows vista and it removed grub and replaced it with the MBR or windows loader. So now I can't boot into the linux OS. I tried out a live cd and tried grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/_boot /dev/sda (after mounting /boot partition at /mnt/_boot location from the live cd.)But on reboot I donot get the menu.lst options, only the black screen with a grub prompt.

Ubuntu Installation :: DVD Drives Absent After Lucid Reinstall

Aug 7, 2010

I recently re-installed lucid on a machine with two working DVD writers, one SATA, the other IDE. After the re-install, neither drive appears to be recognized. Putting an blank CD into either used to cause a pop-up that would ask me if I want to run k3b, but now it doesn't. If I use an external USB DVD writer, I do get that pop-up. Sadly my external USB DVD writer apparently writes unreadable disks, so it is not part of a long-term solution.

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Mount Drives After Windows Reinstall

Feb 27, 2010

I have a windows XP Pro machine and also a Server running ubuntu, the server was built for me and the builder is no longer available for consultation. The server drives which were on my desktop beside my C drive were working flawlessly allowing me access until windows started running quite badly which meant I had to reinstall it. After the reinstall I could not see the drives displayed and I am unable to access them from windows. And also not able to mount them. The server has not been switched off at any time and does not even have a monitor or keyboard or mouse. I have not done anything to change any settings to it. I have zero knowledge of the system. My windows administrator password is exactly the same I have looked on the server and my files are intact I just cant access them from windows which I need to do.

I got the following details off the server:
KERNAL LINUX 2.6.27.5 - 117. fc10.i686
GNOME 2.24.1
MEMORY 881.4 MiB
Processor AMD LE 1620
Samba Server Version 3.2.4-0 fc10

I was told the drives should appear on their own but that's not happening I am not able to sight them at all file sharing and printer sharing is enabled.

General :: Bash - Merging Strings (perhaps With Sort | Uniq)?

Nov 16, 2010

I have multiple strings (eg. say two, firstLIST=(0 1 2) and secondLIST=(2 3)) and want to create a single string composed of their unique sorted elements. For the sample strings above, I'd like to build masterLIST=(0 1 2 3).I suppose I could write the elements of firstLIST and secondLIST to files

Code:

echo ${firstLIST[@]} > firstFILE
echo ${secondLIST[@]} > secondFILE

then use

Code:

sort firstFILE secondFILE | uniq > masterFILE

as this gives me a file populated with the elements I'm after, but I'm not sure how to read the elements back into masterLIST... and it doesn't seem "right" to create files to accomplish this. Is there a way to do this by manipulating the strings ${firstLIST[@]} and ${secondLIST[@]} directly? The closest I've come (not close at all) is

Code:

masterLIST=${firstLIST[@]}" "${secondLIST[@]}

but masterLIST built this way has only one element

Code:

$echo ${masterLIST[@]}
0 1 2 2 3
$echo ${#masterLIST[@]}
1

and I don't have access to the individual digits to then try to figure out how to remove duplicates.

General :: Merging Logical Volume Groups - Initial Setup

Oct 21, 2010

I am very new to LVM, as well as not especially experienced at linux, and have some questions about how lvm works. A few months back I set up a server running FC10 and tried creating Logical Groups during the the initial setup. We've realized that we are not using all the available space on the physical drive, and I realized that for some reason (I'm thinking this might have been the default?), we initially created two Logical Groups (VolGroup00 and VolGroup01) and it appears two Logical volumes in each (LogVol00 and LogVol01). LogVol00 in VolGroup00 is mapped to /, and the other Group was actually unused. I figure that it would be simplest to just use all this space mapped to /, so I thought the thing to do would be to simply merge VolGroup01 to VolGroup00. I tried this:

[root@office mapper]# vgmerge VolGroup00 VolGroup01
Logical volumes in "VolGroup01" must be inactive

So after a bit of research, I tried this:

[root@office mapper]# vgchange -a n VolGroup01
Can't deactivate volume group "VolGroup01" with 1 open logical volume(s)

So apparently There's an open volume, but I don't know how to go about closing it. I removed the LogVol00 from that group, but LogVol01 won't budge.

[root@office mapper]# lvremove VolGroup01
Can't remove open logical volume "LogVol01"

So how do I go about closing this Volume? At one point, there was some output that told me LogVol01 was being used as swap space. How do I handle that?

Fedora :: How To Reinstall Grub In F11

Jun 20, 2009

I've restored a Clonezilla image of my Fedora 11 ext4 installation but realised that I hadn't backed up the ext3 /boot partition. I decided to create a Clonezilla image of the ext3 /boot partition from my laptop, as that has exactly the same partition scheme. I've restored that. I realise it may not work but it might save me reinstalling F11 from scratch. How does one reinstall grub in Fedora 11 given that /boot is on a separate partition? Booting from the F11 DVD in rescue mode, running chroot /mnt/sysimage and grub-install /dev/sda doesn't work.

Ubuntu :: Reinstall / Wiped Out GRUB?

Jun 19, 2010

I've just installed Windows 7 in a separate partition to play with. Trouble is, it's wiped out GRUB. I was expecting this and I know last time this happened it was easy to fix. The forum serch found a thread with 3 ways to re-install GRUB. I've tried each, and none have wored. Methods I've tried

1) The aptitude install grub-pc command ran and said it had worked correctly. On re-bootong, Windows started without any GRUB screens on the way.

2) The chroot method stated it installed correctly after raising a few warnings - after I used the --force command, as the install failed without it. Again, reboot and get Windows without a GRUB screen...

3) Normal grub-install command (no chroot). This went as per the chroot command.

From where I'm sat, it looks like I'll have to do a clean Linux re-install on the disk and then restore my linux files again from a back-up - something I'm not particularly over-joyed by the prospect of...

Ubuntu :: How To Erase And Reinstall Grub

Oct 11, 2010

Several moths ago I installed Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat alfa3 in a newly created partition while I was using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. After I installed the 10.10 alfa3, I realized that it also installed its grub. Moreover that grub could not detect the kernel updates of 10.04. Thus, I recovered the grub of 10.04 via live CD. Interestingly after I returned the grub of 10.04 the boot time of 10.04 has considerably increased.

For example, the Ubuntu splash screen appears 20 seconds after selecting Ubuntu in Grub menu. I thought that a fresh installation for 10.10 final release would solve the problem but it seems that I'm still getting the same boot time until the splash screen is the same. It seems that I need a fresh installation of Grub. The methods that are introduced following url are just recovers Grub. I need to erase and reinstall the Grub. [URL]

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 And Win 7 - Cannot Reinstall Grub

Mar 29, 2011

I have Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7 on my computer. After not booting into my Ubuntu partition for a while, I noticed that grub had disappeared, being replaced by the windows bootloader. I followed the steps here under "reinstalling from liveCD" and I was able to get a grub command line when I rebooted, but no boot menu. So I booted into Ubuntu and ran update-grub like the instructions say, and the output indicated that Ubuntu and Windows had both been successfully found and added to grub.cfg. But when I rebooted, I still only got the grub command line.

When the instructions had steps for if you had a separate boot partition, I used /dev/sda1 because it is marked by fdisk as being the boot partition. I thought that maybe update-grub was only seeing /boot on the Ubuntu partition and wasn't touching the boot partition, so I tried mounting /dev/sda1 as /boot, but after that grub didn't boot at all, it just goes straight to Windows and I haven't been able to reinstall grub even after following the steps again several times. How can I get grub back?
