I had some issues with Wubi installations of Ubuntu, so I figured out how to create a LiveCD and to install from the CD. I am working on Linux now and I am having no issues as far as the Penguin goes. I hash-checked the iso and used older CDs more suited for booting.I chose to install from the CD, and I selected the option which partitions and installs Linux alongside Windows. I was prompted to import some user folders from my Windows Vista, and I agreed. These appeared in Linux and also work fine.
However, after a few hours of messing with my new Linux, I restarted and I realized all I have in my boot menu now are some Linux options, memory test, and a Vista loader & vista recovery. I had intended to have a dual boot system. Did I delete my Windows without meaning to, or can I change the bootloading process somehow to include both Linux and Vista?
Upon selecting the Vista Loader, I was asked if I wanted to recover my files, etc. I refrained because I wasn't sure what the effect would be on Linux. Is there a way to have both Vista and Linux show up normally in my boot menu, or will I have to go back and forth recovering every time I chose to use the other OS?The only reason I still want to use Windows occasionally is because I had Maple software in Windows which was useful for school.
So Ive decided to give Ubuntu a shot after many years of being abused by a Window.. Although it looks good so far Ive yet not managed to install drivers for my HD5850.Whats really stopping my is that I'm reading the instructions and I came across a little "must have" list, here is how it goes..

This procedure works well in Windows, but in Linux where I use wvdial, I dont get prompted for this unlock code. Does anyone know how to insert the unlock code in Linux using any Linux tool (GAMMU/GNOKII/Minicom etc)?

Please help, I am completely new to Linux and having trouble installing software. The packages I am attempting to install are:Google Chrome.I followed the codeweaver instruction and in the user terminal I entered: sh install-crossover-pro-8.0.0.sh
The response I got was unable to find directory. All of the above packages are on my desktop and in my Downloads folder. I have tried Synaptics without success. What to do next? It's 0300 hours here (Australia), yawn, I will be back on later.
I have installed Scientific Linux 4.8 (based on RedHat Enterprise 4) on my old Samsung X10 laptop which previously had a working WinXP on it. Due to a broken screen connector I cannot use my laptop screen so I use a separate monitor connected via a serial link.
The linux install seemed to work fine except now when I boot up I eventually get a screen completely covered with flashing artefacts and I cannot see any desktop like environment. Although in the initial stages of the boot-up I do see white text on a black background zipping by.
I actually saw similar screen artefacts at the beginning of the installation when I chose the 'graphical install mode' (I re-started the install in 'text mode' to see it working).
I will be very pleased if someone can help me fix this as I have been wanting to get into linux for ages and this is my first plunge.

View 13 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to do a network installation of opensuse 11.2 on my ASUS eee 701.
- I've downloaded the ISO image, verified it with md5sum, and burned it to CD.
- I've used a live CD and fdisk to create a new partition table on the internal SSD (/dev/sda) and a single primary partition of type 83.
- I've booted the CD, changed the language to English[UK], and continued.
The installer then told me that there's not enough memory for a graphical installation. This is weird because my ASUS has 1MB of memory and works fine with a live CD, but it's not much of a problem because I'm comfortable with text-based installation.
The real problem is that the installer froze on the next screen while "searching for Linux partitions". I aborted after about 10 minutes of inactivity.
I don't really want to download the entire DVD because I've only got 4GB of SSD and want to set up a trimmed-down system.
I tried to update my system from 9.10 to 10.04 but when the system boots it says that it can not find the symbol for grub_puts_ and drops me into grub rescue.
I have a live disc and have been trying to get grub to reinstall following the advice from different websites and forum threads. It seems that everything goes smooth until I get to the part where you run update-grub. At that point I get the following:
/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / ( is /dev mounted?).
My configuration is as follows:
windows is loaded on /dev/sda1. fdisk -l lists this partition as bootable.
linux / is loaded on /dev/sdb1
/usr is loaded on /dev/sdb5
/var is loaded on /dev/sdb6
/home is loaded on /dev/sdb9
[Code]....
this is where I have problems. it says: /usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / ( is /dev mounted?).
I upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04. on boot up I sometimes get only the purple screen freeze and sometimes I actually get to the grub menu. I select the generic kernel and get the black screen freeze. same if I do the recovery mode. but if I get lucky on a reboot and can get the grub menu up again, I select previous linux version and then select 2.6.35 generic and it will boot into 11.04 with Unity. So, how can I get this thing to boot normal with the correct kernel version? I am fairly new to this linux world and don't want to have to go back to windows if I can help it.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have installed Ubuntu 11.04 for a friend on his new laptop. First I shrunk his Windows partition and then installed Ubuntu 11.04 direct from the Live-CD. Everything worked perfectly and he is very pleased. However I noticed one strange thing. When I ran GParted on the installed Ubuntu Desktop I noted that Ubuntu was installed on an extended partition, /dev/sda4, with the ext4 root file system on /dev/sda7 and three linux swap partitions each of 7.85 GiB. Only one of these swaps partitions is "on", ie with a key next to it. The other two seem to be just wasted space. Why did the install partition three swap spaces?
On a similar theme, on my own machine I installed 11.04 next to my 10.04. This time it installed two additional swap spaces (see problem above). I removed them both and altered the fstab to the UUID of the existing 10.04 swap space and it works perfectly. So my second question is why doesn't the install use existing swap spaces rather than creating new one(s)?
Is it possible to do a 'minimal' install similar to Arch Linux or Sabayon Linux CoreCD?Would these be done by checking/unchecking packages from the DVD?Reason for this is, that I want to install XFCE and/or other DE besides GNOME or KDE, but want to do it from a 'clean' install.I don't like the custom spins because they are not 64bit...
