View 6 Replies View RelatedI hav successfully installed RHEL5.1 on my system. I downloaded flash player from Adobe website. I chose RPM from the download type. Now, I can find an icon on my GUI for the flash player. When I right-click the icon and click on "Open with software installer", I was able to install flash player. Even the system showed that the software has been installed. But still when I issue the command rpm -qi flash the output says that flash is not installed.
Is there any correct way to install the rpm package. I even tried to install using rpm -ivh <flash player pkg name> even that did'nt work... I have another query... where does the package gets installed when I download RPM's or any other software from the internet.. I want to know the path where the pkgs will be sotred...

View 4 Replies View RelatedWe are in the process of testing SLES 10 SP1 installation, onto a new system.
Initially the installation got failed at the start giving following error :
"Could not find the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 Installation CD. Activating Manual setup program."
What is interesting to notice is , if we use SLES 10 SP2 to boot the system upto the Installation menu and then replace the CD with SLES 10 SP1 media, the installation proceeds as normal without any error.
Not sure that could be the problematic thing over here. Does it mean with SP1 , no cdrom/cd or hard disk gets detected ?

View 7 Replies View RelatedHaving been a long-time Linux supporter, it was a no-brainer for me to push Linux as the OS when it was time to move my company's website(s) from an external host to an internal server. My company ponied up the bucks for an HP Proliant DL180 G5 server (this was about a year ago) upon which I installed Slackware 12.1 (I kinda default to Slackware, although in the past I've also used RedHat on the server and openSUSE on the desktop).
Well, it's now time to upgrade the OS on the server. Perhaps I'm a little late to the game on this, but I just recently found out about Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.5. Bad Oracle ju-ju aside, it looked to be a very good and stable server distro, especially when you consider the availability of Oracle support for it. So I've since installed OEL to a non-production server and have been testing it out.It looks to be a good match for my needs.
However, since installing OEL on my test server I've installed Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 on my home desktop (a 1.86ghz Intel Core 2 Duo HP xw4400 workstation) and in a VirtualBox VM on my work desktop (a 3.2ghz Intel Core i3 iMac) and... holy crap, it's the best desktop Linux I've ever had the pleasure of using. It will certainly replace Slackware as my default "go-to" Linux distro. Which has made me wonder about the Ubuntu Server offering and if it might not be a better fit for my webserver in the same way that Ubuntu Desktop is a better fit for my workstation.
Unfortunately, I don't have the time to pull down another server distro, install it, and test it unless I'm reasonably certain that it's going to give OEL a run for its money. So I turn to the forums and the knowledge of the users who frequent them: is Ubuntu Server a strong enough contender to OEL that I should take a more serious look at it? Or, like I'm hearing about the latest Ubuntu Netbook edition, would it not be worth my time if I'm happy with OEL so far?
I am trying to install guest additions on Oracle Enterprise Linux Update 5. Whenever I try to the run VBoxLinuxAdditions-x86.run script I get the following problem:
erifying archive integrity. All good. Uncompressing VirtualBox 2.0.0 Guest Additions for Linux installation. VirtualBox 3.0.6 Guest Additions installation install the build and header files for your current Linux kernel. The current kernel version is 2.6.18-164.el5PAE Problems were found which would prevent the Guest Additions from installing. correct these problems and try again. I also tried yum install using the following commands without any luck:
yum install kernel-devel kernel-headers-`uname -r`
Following are the package information of my kernel-devel and headers:
> rpm -q kernel-devel
kernel-devel-2.6.18-164.el5
> rpm -q kernel-headers
kernel-headers-2.6.18-164.el5
I have been spending a couple of hours already on how to fix this but I still couldnt get to install this.
i have a question about rpm.pbone.net, www.rpmseek.com and these kind of pages: Can I trust these sites and is it secure to install rpms from these sites on enterprise workstations and servers?

View 2 Replies View Relatedi must make this work with the use of virtual pc's. I have vm player and installed fedora ( the latest version ) and one xp . So i have 2 virtual pc's. I'm making it simple for start so i can add more pc's when i see that it is working. I have setup a dhcp server at the fedora virtual pc. The fedora virtual pc is like a soho router. The xp pc is getting ip from dhcp while the fedora one has a static one.
My pc is behind an adsl router. Both virtual pc's can see each other which means i have no connectivity issues.Im trying to setup a squid proxy ( transparent one ) so for example the xp pc can access porn sites and such. I used all required configuration for the squid to work and started the service. Ive also inserted with iptables the commands to forward all incoming port 80 packets to port 3128 ( the squid ). It doesnt seems to be working and i thik i know why but i dont know how to fix it.
Because the xp has a gateway at 192.168.1.1 ( the adsl router ) packets go directly to it and not to the soho router ( fedora virtual pc as i intend to do) What can i do to solve this problem ? How can i forward all packets to go to the fedora virtual pc first and then the fedora pc to forward them (if necessary) to the adsl router? PS. I used Bridged connection on the networking configutration on the vmware player ! If you also want i can post the code for squid or iptables if needed !
I have learnt that the network locked huawei modems may be unlocked to use any sim card bu getting a special unlock code and it should ask for it when a "foreign" SIM card is inserted. This procedure works well in Windows, but in Linux where I use wvdial, I dont get prompted for this unlock code. Does anyone know how to insert the unlock code in Linux using any Linux tool (GAMMU/GNOKII/Minicom etc)?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have installed Scientific Linux 4.8 (based on RedHat Enterprise 4) on my old Samsung X10 laptop which previously had a working WinXP on it. Due to a broken screen connector I cannot use my laptop screen so I use a separate monitor connected via a serial link.
The linux install seemed to work fine except now when I boot up I eventually get a screen completely covered with flashing artefacts and I cannot see any desktop like environment. Although in the initial stages of the boot-up I do see white text on a black background zipping by.
I actually saw similar screen artefacts at the beginning of the installation when I chose the 'graphical install mode' (I re-started the install in 'text mode' to see it working).
I will be very pleased if someone can help me fix this as I have been wanting to get into linux for ages and this is my first plunge.

Since we use Fedora servers at work I have wanted to try Fedora for some time and I tried running it in a virtual machine. My virtual machine is Sun VirtualBox and my OS is Vista Ultimate. Everything worked well until it was time to decide where Fedora is to be installed.Alright, screenshot time yet? This is where I hit the wall, the screen where you select installation drive/partition. The field is greyed out as you can see.
I have prepared a partition, at first I formatted it in FAT32 but because I didn't see it in the installation screen I just re-formatted it in NTFS.Installing with virtual machine should be working? Why is the field grey? What to do? Is it because I have mounted the dowloaded disc image instead of burning it?
