Debian Installation :: Grub Bootloader Only Show Kali Linux To Choose From - Screen Not Allowing To Boot From CD

Nov 29, 2014

Basically I had windows 8.1 running on my fujitsu lifebook A532 laptop and wanted to dual boot kali linux alongside it, however upon installing the linux it deleted EVERYTHING! on my laptop, the grub bootloader only showed kali linux to choose from...

I then decided kali linux is too complicated for me and decided to delete everything and reinstall windows 8 again however I was surprised that my bios screen looks diffrent also I can not edit the boot sequence.

If I press f2 or f12 it takes me to a screen with a tab named Boot menu and its written on it debian and every time I press enter on it it takes me back to this same screen...

I can not boot from cd or usb!

Ubuntu :: Install BURG Now Cant Get Into Either OS?

Oct 7, 2010

im totally new to ubuntu and recently installed it alongside windows 7 just now i tried to install BURG by copying a code i got from a website (dont remember which) into a terminal when i restarted my computer to see if it had worked the following came up

BURG version 1.98+20100623-1 Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists possible device or file completions.

iv looked at every solution from every related forum post but i still cant get into either operating system on my computer. i dont have either of the installation discs which is why i really need to be able to get back into windows, as well as my files and settings. i dont mind if i have to completely remove ubuntu and everything to do with it, as i can easily set that up again in a matter of minutes. right now i just need a way to return my computer to how it was before i installed ubuntu

Ubuntu :: To Burg Or Not To Burg?

May 7, 2011

Has anyone played with Burg? I'm a bit apprehensive about trying it.This laptop had 10.10 as the only OS but I shrank the partition and installed 11.04 in the empty space. So 11.04 re-wrote the Grub with itself at the top of the list.So now I have 10.10 in sda1 and 11.04 in sda6.Do you think that Burg will cause any problems?

Code:

Ubuntu :: No Display After Botched BURG Install?

Nov 24, 2010

and I did a silly noobish thing. I have been using Ubuntu in various flavors for a little over a year now, and decided to install it alongside my Win7 Install on my desktop. Last week I read about BURG on omgubuntu.co.ukI am fairly certain I botched the install of burg somehowWhenever I turn on the computer, there is no display, not Mobo splash screen, not post, no GRUB menu nothing. the Display light is orange, indicating no input detected. But I know the OS is loading, I can hear it bootup, I can login, just by pressing enter, then typing my password, then enter again. Once I hear the login screen drum beat, if I turn off the monitor, then turn it on again, I get a super low res display. the driver works, compiz effects work, but everything is at 640 x 480. when I go to system-> preferences-> monitor the display is labeled as unknown and I can't change the resolution.I can access the BIOS, but the screen still does not detect the input, even if I power cycle the monitor after access the BIOS, so I won't try to change any settings, as I can't see what I am doing. The only reason I know I am in the Bios is that I can press f10 and then y to cause it to reset to default settings and cause a reboot. My system:ATi Radeon hd5870AMD Phenom II X4 3.4 GHzWD Velociraptor 300 Gb4 GbRamASUS M4A78-E

Debian Installation :: Several Versions Of Linux On One PC

Nov 11, 2014

Is it correct to assume that I can install many versions of Linux on a PC, provided for each Linux I set up a separate ext4 partition, and GRUB will let me select which OS to load? If so then:

1. I do not have to set up a separate SWAP partition for each Linux, do I? Will one SWAP serve all the OS?

2. If I wanted my /home directory to reside on a separate partition so that my data will not be lost if I reinstall Linux, do I have to create a separate /home partition for every Linux? Or they can share one?

Ubuntu :: Changing OS Name On BURG?

Mar 14, 2010

I'm trying to make my BURG boot loader look better, right now it has the Ubuntu and Windows icons, but for name it has things like "untu 2.6" because the name won't fit. I am trying to change them simply to "Ubuntu" and "Windows 7", but I'm having some trouble. Using this guide, I am able to change the entries for GRUB2,but it has no effect on my BURG entries. Even if it was just removing the names all together, and just having the icons, that would be fine.

Debian :: Backup Linux Installation And Restore On New HDD

Jun 10, 2015

I have Lenovo IdeaPad z510 laptop. My HDD SMART status is currently "failure". As my laptop is under warranty I can return it to lenovo. So I want to backup as much data as possible (everything is readable). I currently have 3 operating systems: linux xubuntu 14.10, debian 8 and windows 8.1 (triple-boot?). I want to back up only my current debian installation. There are 3 partitions for debian: root (about 50GB), home (>200GB) and swap. I know that I can backup the whole partition using:

Code: Select alldd -if=/dev/sdaX -of=/locaton/of/backup -something

And create .tar file with the whole home directory.

how to restore it later. In /etc/fstab there are references to UUIDs, and as I understand, with new HDD these UUIDs would be different. And possibly the whole partition table would be different. And how would I restore GRUB?I can't make full image of my disk simply because I don't have disk to store it on.Is it possible to create backup on my current debian installation without actually making full HDD backup? Would it work if I would install debian on new disk, then from LiveCD overwrite it with my backup and modify /etc/fstab to match new partitions?

Debian :: Centralize Linux Offline Documentation

Oct 2, 2015

I am using Debian 8, fully updated as of this writing.

I want to find a package or some way to get all my linux offline documentation in one place, be it through the web browser or an application, in the official reppos or not does not matter. I've already tried doc-central with apache2 but I get all sorts of error messages and something about no D-bus daemon started, i dont understand, because I;ve installed d-bus service latest version after the error. when I started doc-central correctly through almost blind luck (only once) I did not get any docs just the welcome message.

Is there an alternative to doc-central, a GUI type solution would be preferable. or at least some advice to properly configure doc-central and maybe that d-bus problem, because I clearly did something wrong, I have even tried to write the configuration through an example file for doc-central, but that did not do much, I've read that DocCentral is unstable so maybe I going at it the wrong way.

Debian Multimedia :: Rotating Images On Linux

Oct 21, 2015

I have been using Debian 8 with XFCE for the past 9 months.

Recently I had a simple job of going through a bunch of receipts (several hundred) and rotating them so that they were all portrait. Easy you may say? Linux fails dramatically.

My only requirements are a visual tool where I can see the image and then a button or even better a keyboard shortcut so I can rotate clockwise/anti-clockwise and move onto the next.

Here are my attempts at this:

ATTEMPT 01 - GIMP

GIMP works but you have to load it up everytime, and the save as feature tries to push XCF format onto you. I just want to overwrite it.

ATTEMPT 02 - GTHUMB

GThumb works as well, but its horribly slow, pops up an annoying image distortion prompt everytime you do it, and it moves the image you've just rotated to the end of the filmstrip and takes you there with it. Unworkable in reality.

ATTEMPT 03 - Nautilus

Nautilus simply fails altogether with a GTK error in the background.

ATTEMPT 04 - Ristretto

This is the default viewer with Debian 8 and it works. Or so I thought. When you rotate in Ristretto it just rotates it within the software and doesn't persist it within the image. So I went off and did 50 of them, thought I had and when I went to view them in other software they were still landscape. Incredibly frustrating.

ATTEMPT 05 - Windows 7 - Standard Image Viewer

This just works. I click one button, rotate left/right and then click next and it's saved. Ristretto could do this if it actually persisted the changes but it doesn't. So I find myself doing this job in a Windows 7 Virtual Machine because Linux just simply doesn't provide a working tool for me.

Any software that does the above simple task well in Linux?
