Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Get Ubuntu Server Edition To Boot

May 9, 2010

I am trying to instal Ubuntu server edition and am having troubles getting it to boot in the computer i want i to. I am using the ubuntu server edition iso i just downloaded today. I have tried it in my Mac (hold c to boot from cd drive etc...) and it boots fine..there i even tested the disc to make sure it didn't contain any errors. When i throw it into the computer i want to instal it on it does not boot up. I just get a "press h to restart" message

Another thing that should be known is that if i throw a windows xp instal disc in the cd drive it boots just fine. I have tried setting several different boot options but for some reason it doesnt like ubuntu.

Installation :: Error While Trying To Boot Ubuntu After Installing Desktop Edition / Fix This?

Jan 20, 2011

I downloaded and installed the Ubuntu desktop edition and when I boot up I have the options to boot either Windows 7, or Ubuntu (so far so good), however, when I select Ubuntu I get a message saying that the following file is corrupt:

File: ubuntuwinbootwubildr.mbr

status: 0xc000000f

Info: The selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt.

Any thoughts on this? Would just re-installing it fix the problem?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 (Netbook Edition) - Master Boot Record Corrupted

Jun 7, 2010

I have a Windows XP/Windows 7 dual boot system. My problem: [URL]. I follow these instructions to the letter, the live "CD" works fine - using a USB stick, I do not have a DVD drive, in- or external -. When I try to install Ubuntu from the live system, it corrupts my master boot record, I get the Error: No Such Device #####################. After I fixed this I tried to install Ubuntu under windows, using the same usb's wubi installer. The install completes, I reboot, and after selecting Ubuntu in my boot menu, I get that likewise well known error with wubildr.mbr [URL]

Rebuilding the USB stick doesn't make any difference, it behaves the same way. The wubi installer has the very annoying habit of downloading the iso during the installation procedure every time, I don't know why I can't just select the iso downloaded in the first step of the above link. This way I cannot check any md5 because I have no idea where it downloads the iso. What should I do to get Ubuntu working? Reinstalling any of my Windows systems is not an option, it is every time like gambling, I am using the same installation files, but sometimes the result is just not the same.

Ubuntu Installation :: Server Edition - Desktop Without Upgrades

I know it is possible to install a Ubuntu Server Edition and later on 'upgrade' it to a desktop edition by doing

Code: sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop But, as I understood it, this installs apps like OpenOffice and such too... Now, is it possible to install the ubuntu-desktop-GUI (so, actually GNOME) without installing all of the unwanted apps Apps I actually need are pulseaudio, transmission and samba, which I prefer to install separately.

Ubuntu Installation :: Delete The Gamers Edition To Get Back To My Original Single Boot 10.10?

Dec 4, 2010

I have a laptop with 2 x different versions of Ubuntu installed as follows:

Ubuntu 10.10 on a partition; and
Ubuntu ultimate edition gamers (based on ubuntu 10.10 I believe).

I've only recently installed the gamers edition as a dual boot to see what it looks like. Now I've had a play around with it I've realised that I don;t really like it.What's the quickest/easiest way of reverting back to my original ubuntu 10.10 as a single boot? I don't want to re-install 10.10 - I was hoping I could delete the gamers edition to get back to my original single boot 10.10.

2. I want to install a Home Server from the DVD but I don't know how to select the server edition to install ? Do I still need to download the CD image for the server edition ? I want to be able to select one or more of the automatic server installation scripts e.g. LAMP.

Server :: Working At The Command Line With Ubuntu Server Edition?

Jun 30, 2010

Whilst I have used GUI-based Linux distros for the last few years, I am now struggling somewhat when it comes to setting up a server from the command line. All the howto's I've read so far tell you how to set up certain things, but I don't know what I actually need to set up.Rather than asking the same questions all over again on a forum like this, and generally being a bit of a noob, I wonder if there's a resource somewhere that someone could direct me to in order to know what I need to do to set up a fileserver.

The hardware is all done, and I will probably set up a router distro like IpCop to manage the network, but I'm rather lost as to what packages I need, and how to know what the server is/isn't doing.I've used plenty of command lines in the past (ms dos, amiga dos, BASIC programming etc), just not a linux command line. All I've ever done is mount a few drives, use nmap and started x

rawest of recruits when I comes to Linux, so pardon me for asking a question that must come up constantly. I've done keyword searches and related questions pop up, but not the most fundamental of all, namely -- How do I create a USB boot drive that will pop me into the latest edition of Ubuntu? Please guide me to a VERY specific guide, because I have looked all over Robin Hood's barn and back, and have found all manner of questions from people who can't get a USB boot key to work -- but nowhere have I found a simple, step-by-step guide for creating one in the first place. If I'm at the wrong forum, please guide me the right one.

General :: Ubuntu 9.10 Server Edition And Samba ?

Feb 8, 2010

I recently built a basic server computer for home use. (this will be for media, documents, music, etc) I have a basic amd mobo, cpu, and dvd drive. I have Ubuntu server 9.10 installed on an 8GB SD card that is attached to a usb dongle. The os loaded just fine And as a storage drive i have a seagate 1TB hard drive.

Then i got to creating shares in samba. I got to editing the smb.conf file and i couldn't figure out how to setup the shares (where exactly the 1tb Hard drive is, how to create directories and what not) Then i realized i needed to format the HDD! but when i go to run fdisk to finally do it, it tells me that it is "unable to open /dev/sda/"

Now i don't know a whole lot about linux as you can tell, but that is the whole reason i set this thing up is for a big learning experience in both linux and network setup.

To sum up, how do i format the 1TB HDD, and how would i set up samba so i could administrate it from my other computer (SWAT is what i've read about)
