Fedora Installation :: Used To Work Flawlessly In F14 Now Does Not Work In F15

May 29, 2011

What used to work flawlessly in F14 now does not work in F15. I have done a fresh installation of F15 and all seemed to go well other than a few minor tweaks. In F14 I had an /etc/fstab file that worked well but in F15 does not work. I have 3 external USB drives, mybook, black & StoreIt. With F14 my fstab worked very well and booted regardless of weather or not any particular drive was connected at any given time. Typically I have the mybook and black connected at home and the StoreIt connected at work, but regardless it would boot and work without any problems.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Get 10.04 To Work / What To Do?

Aug 3, 2010

On my computer I can't get the awesome 10.04 to be fully installed. At the first time start the kernel crashes during the boot because of some non-responding thing over the network. At least that's what it says. But because it's kinda weird for an OS to not be installed I looked further. I uninstalled it, updated my motherboard, defragmented everything and reinstalled Ubuntu. Still the same problem. I uninstalled it again and tried to install 9.10. That worked, but I can't get it to be upgraded since it won't boot if I let the upgrader do it's thing. Anyone suggestions to get 10.04 installed? Preferably directly with the 10.04 iso.

Other info:

Ubuntu Installation :: Ftp Set Up Does Not Work ?

Mar 8, 2011

I am attempting to set up a FTP server. I am going with vsftpd. I followed the steps in the documentation for Ubuntu 10.10

[url]

I installed vsftpd and made one change to the vsftpd.conf file. I uncommented the chroot_local_user=yes so that my users only have access to their home directories.

I then restarted vsftpd.

Now going over the another machine I attempted to access the server using filezilla. I configured the network connection using the wizard and tested it so I know filezilla is configured correctly.

I am attempting to access the site by login into the website so I am using the following parameters:

When I attempt to connect I get the following error in filezilla.

Does anyone know how I can test to see if vsftpd is installed correctly and running? Any idea as to why I am getting this error? Do I need to install another software package to get vsftpd work? Do I need to turn any modules on? Did I miss something during my setup?

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Will Not Work With USB HDD?

I have an external USB HDD enclosure (Rocketfish USB 3.0 2.5" SATA) with a 350GB hard drive installed. Ubuntu Installation :: LiveCDs Won't Work / What To Do?

Jan 16, 2010

I have a Windows ME (Mistake Edition) that I wish to convert to Linux. My two choices are Ubuntu and Xubuntu; the system has the proper requirements for both. I made the two LiveCDs so I could test both of them and choose which one I liked more. However, both CDs do nothing. The Ubuntu one appears empty when I look at it on this computer (and is fine on my XP); the Xubuntu one appears normal. Yet both CDs do nothing when I boot the computer.

Is there something I can do to make them work? Or do I have to turn to another way to install Linux?

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Install 9.10 / What To Get It To Work?

Feb 16, 2010

Its been a while since I have used Linux, going back to the early realeases of Red Hat and Mandrake.

Decided to give it another shot and downloaded the 9.10 Desktop ISO.

I get tot the menu screen where I can Try Ubutu, Install Ubuntu, Test Drive, Test Memory ect.

Selected Install and it gets to the Ubuntu Icon screen, then goes to a black screen and hangs PC. Tried the Try Ubuntu Option same thing.

Redownloaded the ISO and burnt it again at 4x Speed, exactly the same thing. Created a bootable USB drive, tried installing it that way, same again. A little frustrated by this point.

Downloaded the Alternative Text Based Install, Installed fine, but as soon as Ubuntu Loads and gets to the Ubuntu Icon it goes black and hangs. code...

Ubuntu Installation :: Firefox Does Not Work In 8.04?

Apr 15, 2010

Yesterday I tried to update Firefox from 3.0.19 to 3.6 using this instructions: [URL]

Installation went without problems, but now I can not start Firefox! The FF icon in the taskbar changed to a globe and says "Namoroka - FF pre-release" but firefox doesn't start by clicking onto it. I tried to manually remove all firefox packages and reinstalling either 3.0 or 3.6 but same problem again. I also installed epiphany too, but it shows the error "epiphany cannot be used at the moment, because initialization of mozilla failed".

I want to use the new Firefox (or old one, if 3.6 not possible) in Ubuntu!

P.S.: Now I'm writing with FF from my Windows installation under Wine.

Ubuntu Installation :: GDebi And APT Won't Work?

I installed Linux Mint 8 (which I believe is a flavor of Ubuntu 9.10) and I have everything good except for the GDebi and APT installations

Previously I was able to open a .DEB file when Firefox prompted me to choose what to do, now it doesn't.

Same thing with the APT option. With Getdeb apps I use to be able to click the INSTALL NOW and it would prompt me to install using APT. Like the GDebi, it doesn't do this anymore.

How can I get it so Firefox can open .DEB files in it along with the APT command

Ubuntu Installation :: Get 3M Touchscreen To Work

Jun 13, 2010

I am trying to get my 3M touchscreen to work in Ubuntu. Presently, I have the usbtouchscreen module loaded -- which results in touches being recognized, but the y-axis is backwards (ie: if I press at the top, it shows up at the bottom). Given that hal is depreciated, the only place I could note for configuration options the xorg.conf.d directory. But, I'm unsure what needs to be added there.

Additionally, I am confused over usbtouchscreen vs evdev vs evtouch -- which is supposed to be used at this point?

Ok, some system info:

I am running Ubuntu 10.04

Installation :: Ubuntu Won't Boot / Get It To Work?

Jun 30, 2010

Maybe this isn't a problem, but I'm a complete Ubuntu newb and am having trouble getting it to boot. I previously had Ubuntu 9.10 installed but had a HD failure, so after using an old hard drive and installing Ubuntu, it doesn't seem to boot up. During the boot process a screen comes up that says, "GNU Grub 1.97 beta." It lists 4 options, I apologize for not writing them down, but each one I select, it says something to the effect of, "No boot device." Again, sorry for not writing that down, but I was hoping someone would be able to figure it out. If you need more information, I can copy it down tonight. I guess I'm just not sure what to do next. When I previously installed Ubuntu, it just went straight to the desktop.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading From 8.04 To 10.04 Will Not Work

At my last update, apparently some 2+ years ago, it was possible to run the system update first and once installed, let it check and download any corrections and changes. Does that not work anymore?

Ubuntu Installation :: XP Does Not Work Because Of Bad Sectors

Mar 31, 2011

I used to have windows xp. But recently I started having a message at startup telling me that my disk might be failing and I should run the test (which would crash and reboot th laptop). Then after a while windows wont even start. So I tried to use ubuntu netbook live from a usb and it is working fine ! I can even access all my data on the hard disk, although it is telling me that the hard disk is failing and that it has 1024 bad sectors. I have only one hard disk and one partition (120 GB). Can I just install ubuntu and somehow block the bad sectors? (I don't want windows anymore) and is there any way I could keep my old data on the hard disk without backing it up (it is not really important btw).

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Get Grub-efi To Work

Apr 7, 2011

After much googling and trial-and-error, I have finally decided to ask about this problem. I have an hp tm2t-1100, a computer that supports efi/uefi booting. However, when I install grub-efi, it installs itself to my hard drive (even though I'm using GPT!) and sets itself up to boot BIOS-mode and then EMULATE EFI. How can I get grub to install to an EFI system partition? I know I need a FAT32 partition named HP_TOOLS and a /boot/efi/ directory on it. I already have those things, but I cannot figure out for the life of me how to get grub-efi to install for a real actual efi-boot instead of what it is doing now (installing like normal grub and emulating efi).

the cp's and ln's are from an install.sh from weidu-linux. apparently, i have compiled things in a terrible way. I don't want help with the flash issue--i just want my apt-get / dpkg to be clean again! i'll never try to run baldur's gate with weidu mod's again,
