I'd like to install centos from a USB stick on to a hard drive and also include a custom kickstart on the USB stick to run post-build scripts or install additional packages, which the additional packages would also be on the USB stick..Are there any howto's already written?

then created initrd image
I have installed the above via kickstart installation

Here is a way to prepare a USB flash drive to save your kickstart file to it, and then read the kickstart file from the USB drive during a new Fedora installation.A USB flash drive is recognised by the Linux kernel as just another hard drive.This is how I set up my USB flash drive to use it to store my kickstart file on.You will need a working Linux system to set up the USB drive.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI wanted to install a Linux distro to a flash drive so that I can have a portable OS with all my settings, programs, etc. wherever I go. So I fired up a Linux Mint Live CD and installed Mint to the flash drive, and this seems to work OK. But now, whenever I try to boot up my system normally without the flash drive plugged in, it doesn't seem to work. It basically hangs for a bit, and then I get the following prompt:
However, when I try powering my system up when the USB is plugged into the computer, it gives me an option between using the OS installed on my USB and the OS installed on my HD. Selecting the latter, everything loads up just fine. I'm guessing that installing Mint to the flash drive somehow messed with my native Grub installation.
I want to install CentOS on a netbook I have that's currently running Mandriva.
I know often with a distro you can run the LiveCD/Live USB version from a USB Flash Drive. I understand maybe I can do that but want I want to do is do an actual install. Is this possible?
I assume I'd need to download the distro to my netbook under Mandriva and then after do an install and choose the USB Flash Drive after inserted as the hard drive to install to. Then when I boot up the computer I'd just choose the USB Drive as the bootup drive.
Is this possible though? Would it damage my Mandriva install? Like I said I know I can use the USB Flash Drive likely as a bootup/Live CD type of solution but since I will be using it semi-regularly and saving data at times I'd like to use it simply like another hard drive. Is this possible?
I downloaded the CentOS 5.5 Live CD iso, booted from it, and I like it. I would like to install CentOS 5.5 on my new system, but there do not appear to be any options for hard drive installation, partitioning, etc...

Unplug the USB drive and take it to the machine to be installed.Reboot the machine and choose USB boot option in the BIOS boot menu. Choose Hard drive installation method and select /dev/sdb1 as partition that holds ISO images. Use sda drive for installation and choose to review the partitioning layout. In advanced bootloader options, change drive order to "sda sdb". Proceed with the installation.
So easy it should be a tool in every admins box. I hope I saved you some time and headaches.

I am having new hardware and IDE driver for that hardware as drive disk image (it8213_centos53.img). CentOS 5.3 installation is working fine with drive disk image at USB and CentOS 5.3 at DVD. Our application uses CentOS 5.3 and we build a custom kick-start ISO for installations. Using that ISO client is going to install on all hardware boxes.
Note while installing :
a) No network connection is avalible.
b) No USB isavalible.
c) No floppy is avalible.
d) Only single CD-ROM is avalible.
So, is it possible to build single custom kick-start CentOS 5.3 ISO which contains dirve disk image and entire installation will be done using that image. If so please let me know the steps to build it.
I want to install Cent OS5 on my machine. The Hard Disk is SATA. I want to discuss about how to custom partition the hard disk. In the old version there is a drop down list for manual partition the hard disk. like /,boot,swap,var etc etc. In the new version of centos 5 I can not see things like that. During installation process and in partition page there are things like:

When I choose custom layout it show me an error message. "An error has occurred-no invalid devices were found on which to create new files system. Please check your hardware for the cause of this problem."

when i use kickstart to install centos from cdrom (i make it myself in my way),i got a %post script problem with the kickstart file. 1.%post script used to copy my own software from cdrom to hard disk.then make install automaitlly with bash script.

we can't get the clients in our lab to do a kickstart install. we're doing the install by booting from the Centos 5.3 net install cd and anaconda starts, but terminates abnormally reporting a SIGSEGV fault. Interestingly, attempts at doing an install from a CD and without the network connection results in this error:
X11TransSocketINETConnect() can't get address for localhost:6001. Temporary failure in name resolution.
In the release anouncement there is mention of adding additional repo's at install time. Is this also possible in the kickstart file?

Can an unattended Kickstart support both IDE (hda) and SCSI (sda)? The goal is to to create a new virtual machine from scratch. What I have works for Parallels in which a new VM defaults to emulate an IDE hard disk. It does not work for VMware Workstation which defaults to emulate a SCSI disk.
The relevant Kickstart section: bootloader --location=mbr --driveorder=hda --append="rhgb quiet"

I have no hard drives in my computer, so I have been trying to boot Ubuntu 11.04 from an 8GB usb flash drive. Is this possible? So far the best result i have gotten is it will sit on the loading screen for a while then dump. I was only able to get the last little bit which reads mount. mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: no such file or directory. mounting /sys on /root/sys filed: no such file or directory. mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: no such file or dirctory. target file system doesn't have requested /sbin/init

I want to create a bootable cd that I can pop in my server and basically walk away for 45 minutes and I come back and its fully installed. All the directions I have read so far tell me that I have to create a seperate ks.cfg and then I need my original centos cd to get it booted. Then the cd will ask for where the ks.cfg file is and I have to type the location. I just want to pop the CD in and type in linux_clean or something and have it perform a custom install based on the information and specification in my ks.cfg. How can I go about doing this?

Everything works fine except one thing that, when I suspend the machine, the hard disk is always shut off in a "hard way". The sound is similar to the one you would hear when shutting down the machine by keeping pressing on the power button.. this is no good.

I bought a card and a adapter, but I am seeing that there are a lot of downsides to this (e.g. the card is slower, writes should be conserved because of limited write cycles, etc..) plus, in order to change the hard drive in my laptop (ibook g3 clamshell) you literally have to disassemble the entire thing! I mainly wanted to do this project to increase my battery life. However, some people say that it doesn't make much of a difference, while others say it is wonderful. So, to those that have done this mod, how much of a difference did it make for you?
