I'm trying to learn Linux and have created a VMWare guest operating system using CentOS 4.8. I expect the next step is to install ssh in order to transfer files to the server but as of yet I haven't figured out how to assign it a host name or how to effect a transfer.

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 from 9.10. Under 9.10 I dual booted to Ubuntu or Vista in the grub menu. Now that I have upgraded I cannot boot to Vista. When I select the Vista option in the Grub bootloader it restarts the computer and comes back to the grub menu screen again. I have run the boot_info_script. The results are:ot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010 ============================= Boot Info Summary: ==============================

I have installed fc12 on my core2due machine, and I have installed the vmware server on it, its rpm is installed successfully with out any error, after that a message is displayed
The installation of VMware Server 2.0.2 for Linux completed successfully. You can decide to remove this software from your system at any time by invoking the following command: "rpm -e VMware-server".
Before running VMware Server for the first time, you need to configure it for your running kernel by invoking the following command: "/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl".
I tried this command and find the this message
[Akram@localhost Downloads]$ su -c "/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl" Password: Making sure services for VMware Server are stopped.
None of the pre-built vmmon modules for VMware Server is suitable for your running kernel. Do you want this program to try to build the vmmon module for your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)? [yes] yes
Using compiler "/usr/bin/gcc". Use environment variable CC to override.
Your kernel was built with "gcc" version "4.4.2", while you are trying to use "/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.4.3". This configuration is not recommended and VMware Server may crash if you'll continue. Please try to use exactly same compiler as one used for building your kernel. Do you want to go with compiler
"/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.4.3" anyway? [no] yes
What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel?[/usr/src/linux/include]
Now it asks me in last lines that "What is the location of Directory of C header files that match your running kernal?"

Just something that struck me while working on our virtual servers today.
I have bonded 3 NICs at the host in Ubuntu Server 8.04 LTS. They are using mode 0 for Round-robin. Point is to increase the speed/performance of all the servers, but mainly the fileserver. The fileserver is a virtual server running Ubuntu Server 8.04 LTS on VMware Server 2.0.
1) I noticed the NIC in the slave OS reported link speed as 1000 and Im unable to change it as the NIC (virtual one) doesnt support it. Does this not really matter, as the NIC doesnt exist, and it will run at higher speeds anyway? Or do I have to remove the bond on the host, bridge all 3 interfaces from the host to the slave OS, and then make a bond in the slave OS?
2) While at it, does mode 0 only increase performance on data being sent from the host or does it also increase the available incoming bandwidth?

I completed the installation of VMWare Server 2.0.2 onto a CentOS 5.4 64-bit distribution. There is a VMware virtual machine file on the server in question, and I want to activate it through the application console.
I did not see anything readily apparent that would facilitate the importing of the virtual machine file. Does anyone have a procedure that can accomplish this task?

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 inside VMware Player running under Windows Vista and I can't connect to the internet or the host computer from the Ubuntu.
I have set all the VMware services to manual (like VMware DHCP Service), but starting them manually doesn't help.
In VMware, the network seems to work (there is a green dot beside the network icon) and I have tried both Bridged and NAT settings.
ifconfig doesn't show the eth1 interface, unless I give it as a parameter (or use -a). I think this means that Ubuntu thinks that the network isn't connected at all.

Since a few days, my CPU was always in 100% and I haven't find some process that use my laptop. So, I decide to kill all process, one by one to find a solution, and so, some shortcuts in the manager bar diseappear. I said me that is not very important because I can retrieve them in the next reboot but no, every showcuts killed is not present after the reboot.
The most important one is the applet to select the network-manager to present the nic wired and wireless. Impossible to find it. Someone can tell me how to configure again this applet to manage my nics again ?

I'm running Ubuntu 8.04.3 server on my XP Pro SP3 machine using VMWare. I'm trying to set up a static IP address but I can no longer ping anything except my router (not even the XP machine it's hosted on). I'm using "bridged" mode in VMware
Here's my /etc/network/interfaces file:
Code:
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.1.50
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 192.168.1.0
broadcast 192.168.1.255

I have a private server which I stream media from, but since I've installed VMware running Windows 7 and set up Windows to used a bridged connection, so I can access the network drives in Windows. Now that I have done that, I cannot connect to my home server unless I have VMware running.
I only want windows running when I need it, but I need access to my server at all times.

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid and VMware 2.0 server. I have a an XP virtual machine that is needed for work. When I am at home and I place my cat 5 cable to my cisco catalyst switch, my XP VM recognizes the ethernet card on my laptop and bridges fine with ubuntu and works fine and I can get to my network. When I take my laptop to work and I go to a site and I plug it into a World Wide Packet 311 management port on the switch, my XP Virtual Machine does not see the network no matter what setting I set it too(100 full, 10 full, 10 half and etc). It simply says that the network card is disconnect. Ubuntu see the network fine and I can ping and talk to the network without any issues but the VM does not.

I know this has been discussed many times, but with the current versions, things have changed again. So I ask again.
I am installed:
- Fedora 13, x64
I want to install, config and run:
- VMWare Server 2.0.2 (Community Edition)
I have already upgraded my Fedora 13 system using important commands:
- yum install kernel-headers kernel-devel
- yum install gcc
I have a directory:
/lib/modules/2.6.33.5-124.fc13.x86_64
with some subdirectories, but no include folder there.
vmware-config found the gcc, but cant find the kernel-header files. Also I dont know how to give it the correct path to these kernel-header files.

I have been using VMware Player for some time to host Fedora VMware images on Windows XP. I have been using Fedora 11 and 12 (both 32 and 64 bit) and recently started to use Fedora 13.
I use as a base the images provided by thoughtpolice. http://www.thoughtpolice.co.uk/
I usually install VMware tools and also keep the images updated (yum update) which sometimes changes the kernel.
I have recently had problems with the snapshots not having a network when I restore them. So far I don't have the problem with Fedora 11 and do have it with Fedora 12 (but used not to). I do have it with Fedora 13.
In each case the problem goes away when I uninstall the VMware tools and comes back when I install them again.
One of the symptoms is that SElinux complains about not being able to do something with /var/run/vmware-active-nics.
It looks to me that something is incorrect in the actions being taken when the snapshot is being restored. It does not happen every time and sometimes the network restores itself.
The network can be restored by rebooting the image.

Issue with the 'host' command that comes with bind-utils package. We don't have any browsing/name resolution issues except to the following two sites:
[code]....
command [URL] returned:
www.aeroplan.com is an alias for www.halb.aeroplan.com.
www.halb.aeroplan.com has address 207.34.195.17
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached
[code].....
I have tried to run the "host" command against different DNS caching servers I have access to all produced the same timed out error. I called Aeroplan technical support to report the issue to them and from their perspective, they have no problem accessing the website. And we don't have any problem accessing any websites ourselves if "host" return A record lookup without the timed out error.
1. It's not our firewall filtering out packet. I tried it on external facing server without firewall and got the same result.
2. It's not our DNS caching server cause same errors are observed on our ISP caching server.
3. It works on an altogether network, from a Windows Vista desktop, through IE 8.

i have recently started my masters degree program and i have to install fedora 11 for one of my courses. The problem is when i try to install fedora 11 on my laptop, it wipes out my windows vista installation. I want to keep vista. I have a sony vaio laptop model VGN-FW340D. 4GB RAM and 400 GB HD. i first shrink my hard drive to free up around 100 GB. Then i run fedora 11 DVD and let it make the partitions on my free space.. I have tried everything.. I chose use free space the first time, but i didnt work, it wiped out my vista, next time i chose custom layout and defined boot, root and swap partitions , but again it wiped out my vista.. I have read many guides to dual boot vista and fedora and have carried them out step by step, but nothing works.... Also i dont have vista installation DVD, i just have the recovery CDs, so everytime it wipes out my vista, i have to do system recovery, ive been trying for a week now, and its driving me crazy, i asked a friend of mine to help me out, he has dual boot system, and he tried it and it did the same thing, wiped out my vista... i just have one drive C: with two partitions, one small partitions which contains recovery files, and the rest of the partition has vista.......

I had a Samba server that worked as expected, but after four years of operation, I had to upgraded for a different reason. After much pain and agony, Samba *almost* works. The Big Problem: On XP, the Samba server "Scully" appears in "My Network Places". On the Vista and Win7, the server is not seen in "Network". The shares can be accessed and mapped if the name \Scully or IP address is provided \192.168.X.Y, but it can not be browsed.

I am having trouble getting my FC10 with tomcat visible to the outside world. first off i am somewhat new to linux. I am running vmware workstation to host my linux web server. i have my VMWare setup to use my second NIC solely. it is bridged and the tcp/ip is disable from the host. i can ping the ip address but cant access tomcat on port 8080 from the outside. i can hit it fine from inside fedora. i have configured my router (wrt54gs with DD-WRT firmware) for port forwarding. so basically i think that the problem is somewhere in between the host and the vmware configuring allowing the port to be forwarded through.

Im using fedora 13 x64 install from DVD. Has anyone else found problems using vmware 7.0.1 or 7.1. My bridged networking will not pickup a dhcp address, and even if I configure static my network will still not work, yet NAT works fine. Even configuring bridged to use a dedicated device doesnt work. Workstation worked fine on Fedora 12 but this seems to be a reoccuring problem in every other release.

I recently bought a new Netgear WNDR3300 Wireless-N router, and cannot seem to see the linux box in my windows network. (We have multiple Windows machines on my network, all in the same workgroup.) I also recently bought Avast anti-virus, and I think I have enabled the IP range of all computers to enable communication. I wonder if a media router has different needs than just the regular router I used to use. My samba file is minimal, I will post an example. I wish my Windows computer to access a drive marked /terminal on my linux box. I have a drive on my Windows marked E:Cher on my Vista box. My workgroup name is BRCR.
