I've just done a clean install of 11.04. I'm using the DVI output from a 8400GS card into a Dell U2311H monitor. The problem is that despite the Nvidia X Server correctly showing the resolution as 1920x1080, the picture is squashed into the middle of the screen with black bars either side. The picture is distorted such that circles appear oval.

I have been using ubuntu wel a long time now and I know my way around in linux but I recently updated my laptop from ubuntu 10.04 to ubuntu 10.10 all went fine until I had to restart my laptop. I got a purple screen (loading screen) with 4 dots and a oldskool like font which said: Ubuntu 10.10 Right after that the screen goes purple and its like the system halts I hear no login sound etc just a purple screen. So I did a clean install from the 10.10 live cd which booted perfectly fine and the system was also useable like before. But when I installed the system and rebooted it again no problems.
But when I tried to install the proprietary nvidia driver (the recommended one) I got the same problem again the purple screen. After searching a while on the internet I only found posts which had the problem with ATI cards but my laptop is fitted with a Nvidia Geforce 9300 M card. So I tried several things like removing the xorg.conf (read it somewhere) which ofcourse did not work, and booting in graphics fail safe mode which worked. So the point is in 10.04 and 9.10 I CAN use my video card drivers but not in 10.10 is there a solution to this problem? I am talking about the 32 bit version of ubuntu and here's my system hardware profile:

Our problem arose when we upgraded to a new version of Wine to gain compatibility with a Windows program.The new version checks that its working directory is owned by the executing user. If it isn't, then Wine refuses to run.We mount home directories over NFS. When we export, we squash root only -- we don't squash all. Yet from the clients' points of view, users' home directories are always owned by nobody/nogroup (65534/65534).I believe nothing in our exports or fstabs would cause that.

i just tried to install Ubuntu 11.04 (x86) on my Dell Inspiron 1520 Laptop (with a Nvidia 8600M GT graphics card) with Wubi. A normal installation try resulted in an unreadable screen after boot (see attachment). I then managed to get the installation going by modifiing the boot options like shown in this HowTo: [URL] After the installation Wubi automatically rebooted the system without any prompt, so that i couldn't install the proper Nvidia drivers (is there a way to prevent wubi from doing that?) like described in the HowTo. After the reboot the graphics were messed up again.
Boot parameters like "text" "single" or vga=xxx didn't work, adding nomodest and nouveau.modset again didn't help either (I think "text" acutally brings up the console, but i just see an unreadable "blacker" screen than normal). Is there an boot option for grub to disable all nvidia related drivers and the graphical login manager and just show a text based console? Or force the gfx driver to be the same as in the installation process (which was perfect...native resolution, no graphical errors until the reboot) (i tried xforcevesa without any luck; nosplash and removing quiet/splash does work - the bootup process is readable, but as soon as the login manager starts its messed up again)
I did a fresh install of 8.04 alternate disk with LVM then updraded to 10.04 (due to lack of any spare CDs around).
Everything was working fine but wanted to try to get the nvidia-173 drivers installed (I have an old FX5200). Can't start into X now as my plasma says mode unsupported.
At one point I managed to boot into recovery mode then root terminal and removed all nvidia packages and reinstalled nvidia-173 only and followed the instructions listed on the 10.04 release candidate page. Still stuck with the unsupported modes error on my TV though. I have a 720p plasma display (1366x76, I usually run 1280x768 without issues. I'm guessing it is the refresh rate set in the new xorg.conf that is throwing me off, how to adjust this?
An issue that's complicating things however is that when I try to boot into recovery mode I get an error stating 'pcspkr' driver already registered, aborting... then it hangs there until I ctrl-alt-delete and force a restart. This is preventing me from getting to the point where I can select a a root terminal to try to fix my errors.
I have used 8.04 exclusively for a few years and wanted to try something new (still not all that adept at linux setup).
EDIT: I managed to get to root again and just removed the xorg.conf file and that seems to work somewhat. Except now I can't boot as I get a looping mountall: Plymouth command failed that hangs up the process.
I installed Karmic and the resolution was lower than I expected. I went to Admin and Drivers and the system stated I needed to activate the Nvidia driver. I did this and the system asked for a reboot.Now after Grub I get a black screen. I can hear things going on in the background and can even guess when to input my password, but all I see is a black screen.

Ok, so you just installed ubuntu 10.04 updated it through update manager and installed your nvidia drivers but when you rebooted and tried to log on you find yourself in a terminal interface well i found an easy fix for that.
i hope it works for you not saying it will though im new to the linux world only just coming out of windows and i dont know much anyways just log on the terminal and use command "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" then run nvidia-xconfig command reboot and you should be fine only wish this would work for ubuntu 10.10
I realize that many have had the issue of getting a black screen when booting up. I'm posting because I've tried a couple fixes that I read after doing a search and haven't had any luck yet. I have the 64-bit 10.04 installed on my netbook and my issue surfaced after installing the current nVidia accelerated graphics driver. Following the install ubuntu now boots to a black screen and nothing more. View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm installing 10.10 on a desktop with Nvidia 6150 that needs nomodeset on boot or i get the blank screen upon boot. I had to force the live CD to nomodeset when booting from the CD. I was finally able to install, but upon the first boot from the hard drive I'm getting the blank screen again. How do I boot with nomodeset and get to my installed ubuntu. Once I get there i can edit my grub settings.

So far I have installed Ubuntu 10.04, Ubuntu 10.10 and Unbuntu 11.04, they all seem to have the same problem. when I log in the screen goes black and the pc's hangs. I can switch to a terminal before I login and everything seems operational. I can login to Ubuntu with a fail save x session.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI've had Ubuntu installed on my desktop for a month now, and its all worked like a charm, so I'm thrilled. I then decided to install it on my old laptop as well to see if I could breath a bit more life into it, and to get used to working Ubuntu a bit more. The laptop had 18.6GB partitioned to C:// drive or windows XP, and an empty 18.6GB D:// drive, so I deleted the D:// drive in XP using the Microsoft disk utilities tool, all well and good. I then did a clean install of Ubuntu-9.10-desktop with an Ubuntu CD into the largest continuous free space, and it set it up nicely. When I first booted it up there were a ton of updates to install, as there had been on the desktop first time, which I dutifully installed. As on the desktop a little notice popped up telling me to install the NVidia Proprietary driver for the NVidia card (specifically "NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version 96)[Recommended]"), as it had when I installed it on the desktop, so I chose to install that and then restarted the computer.
On restarting GRUB2 loaded, and it booted Ubuntu. I then saw the little white logo on the black screen for a couple of seconds, and then the screen goes completely white, with some pixels left behind fading to white slightly slower. First time through I held down the power button to force shut down, and on restart exactly the same thing happened. This time I held down alt+sysrq and went through the R, E, I, S, U, B sequence, however as opposed to usual I didn't get a black terminal-like screen after hitting any of the buttons, although it did reboot on B. It did boot correctly in recovery mode, however I was at a loss what to do here. Incidentally, the same problem occurred when I booted to previous version of the kernel as well.
Then I decided that as I didn't have any data to lose, and it was still early in the day, I'd do a clean re-install. This time I chose to ignore the updates, and just install the NVidia driver as prompted to check that it was the driver causing the trouble. Having installed the driver and restarted I got exactly the same problem as before - definitely this pesky NVidia driver, not any of the updates.So here I am at clean install 3, having just got all the updates, but not having downloaded the NVidia driver as prompted, with little desire to go through yet more reinstalls. My questions are:
1) Do I need to install this NVidia driver? The rest of the computer specifications are fairly paltry by modern standards, and I won't be doing anything graphics intensive on it (the most graphical program will probably be Battle for Wesnoth) and I I don't need to install it, not installing it seems to be the easiest way to solve the problem.
2) If I do need to install it how would I go around doing this without getting my charming white screen?
3) Is there a way of removing the driver from recovery mode that doesn't involve a clean install again? I have tried sudo apt-get purge nvidia-driver, which tells me there isn't any installed. I have tried sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf which made no difference. I have tried dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and this didn't help. I have tried a couple of other commands as well but I can't remember them, however I would probably recognise them if I saw them again.

Well, I just got back from the Pepsi Center after watching the Denver Nuggets NBA basketball team look silly against the Dallas Mavericks. 4.5 hours later and I still have a black screen. Was it Einstein who said, "it is insanity to do the same thing, the same way, over and over and expect a different result"? I feel I will been testing that hypothesis soon.
I am using the actual "testing", Debian works in version 5 on my notebook (or at least starts), but I can't use it b/c I have too much new hardware what is already implemented in the testint Version. I already had debian 6 running but that wasn't the good way to do it.
I have an Alienware m17x R1, with a q9000, a nivida mobile 260gtx. I know that the Problem the basic Debian Driver for Nvidia cards is. It is enough if I can use at least the command line of Debian to install an actual Nvidida driver and get the system running. But that's not possible!
I solved it once, with plugging in an External Monitor to my Notebook, but I don't have one at home at the moment and honestly there must be a better way for. How to "let debian 6. use the Notebook Screen"?
I am completely failing to boot the Fedora 13 i686 live CD (MD5 check OK), in every case after the progress bar at the bottom completes I am presented with a garbled screen. My system has:
Motherboard: Asus MX-M2V
Graphics card: Gigabyte nVidia GeForce 7600 GS
2GB RAM, AMD64 dual core, etc.
Some websurfing this might be a graphics option and I have tried adding different commands to the boot option before the "quiet" namely:
nomodeset nolapic / nomodeset noapic / nomodeset noapci / nomodeset acpi=off / nomodeset xforcevesa
None of which worked. Both Asus and nVidia offer linux drivers for download:

After installing debian squeeze I tried installing a nvidia driver. I had to type: /etc/init.d/gdm3 stop The nvidia driver wouldn't install because the 'make' command was missing in a path or something. Now I cannot get the GUI anymore. startx gives me a blank screen rebooting the computer gives me a blank screen. I can only boot in recovery mode. but the nic doesnt work so no internet connection.

I now it's the video card, NVIDIA but how do I fix it? I installed Fedora 8 which worked just great, no issues. My machine is Intel Core 2 7300, Geforce 9600GT my other machine, is AMD-64 5000, Geforce 9500 GT, same problem happens when trying to install Centos 5.

I had to fight to get it to install kept freezing and stopping. I finally got it installed. It runs fine and is fast. I like it alot and then after about 5 to 10 min. The screen locks up or will distort in multicolor stripes across the screen. I cant figure out whats going on!
I did just notice that the specs say it's a 64bit possessor and I'm running the 32bit ubuntu will that make a difference?
Although I managed fairly quickly to get 3D enabled on the GF 7600GS of my desktop, it took me longer to get 3D up on the GF 9650M GT of my Asus laptop M70Vn. Although I made extensive use of the numerous procedures outlined here, none of them worked and booting my laptop always ended up with me facing a jet-black screen and a completely inexpressive blinking white cursor. My solution was simple: I did not blacklist Nouveau and problems mysteriously disappeared.

In the past I used xinerama which was ok, but now I need to have two separate desktops, one on each screen. I set the nvidia driver with x screen, and now one screen works perfect and the other only shows a black screen. When I move the mouse over the black screen, the mouse pointer turns into an X, but moves correctly, which seems to me that the problem is that I need to set the second desktop to that screen. I looked on forums on how to do so, and no luck.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was wandering around the system parameters and saw that there was an option to activate a non-open nvidia driver for my Asus Emachine EL1200 with Ubuntu 8.04 install (pre-installed, worked fine for a year now). So I did. However, when I restarted, my screen resolution was changed to 800*600 or so, no good. Although I could not see the right part of the same "nvidia" window, I managed to deactivate the driver. Regretfully when restarting the screen resolution was still 800*600. I thought it was 1440*900 for my Asus VK192S-B (checked it on internet) but it didn't work (did not check the refreshrate at that time). So I stared to fiddle around and stupidly accepted a 1280 * 800. As I said before the resolution is completely f***up now. I have about 4 copies of my desktop and the worst part is there are lines over it and I can not see what the windows say. I manage to get the resolution config screen, but can not get the right optios selected, working "blindfolded".
I looked at this helpful forum and identified the /etc/x11/xorg.conf file as the important file. Also I saw a xorg.conf.failsafe file with my original config! With the recovery cd of Asus I managed o set up a live session and actually can open the xorg.conf file and see the damned line with 1280*800. Regretfully the original /etc folder as well as the original home folder cannot be written in, or copied. Permission problems, as could be expected. I have some backup, but not of quite a lot of photos I uploadd from my camera recently. Reinstalling from scratch is fo the moment not an option.
I can't figure out how to install the nvidia drivers for my nvidia 8800 GT video card. I've followed some other posts and all the posts seemed either incomplete, or led me down a path of which eventually broke my installation, that I needed to reinstall the entire ubuntu system.Again, it may not have been broken, i just didnt know how to get back in to the gui version of ubuntu, the instructions took me to the console terminal

i am having a problem with my just recently upgraded ubuntu 10.10 ive search google and forums for well over 4 hours with no luck so im asking here. Now i know nvidia 96 has problems with xorg 1.9 but i installed the updated nvidia 96 driver that supports xorg 1.9 through maverick-proposed and i dont have nvidia control panel under system->preferences and if i types sudo nvidia-settings in terminal i get it says im not running an nvidia driver but the hardware driver reports it as activated but not in use and nvidia settings also tells me to run nvidia-xconfig but it says this when i do sudo: nvidia-xconfig: command not found
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have 9.10 running on an old computer with a Nvidia Vanta-graphics card. Unfortunately these appearently aren't supported by 9.10, since the oldest nvidia drivers in the repository for this build are nvidia-gfx-96, while vanta seem to supported up to nvidia-gfx-71. After some hours of following tutorials, fiddling around and testing I managed to install the 71-drivers. But, the nvidia-settings require nvidia-xconfig to be around, which is embedded with later driver-builds but not with 71.
Fortunately I found a tar.gz at this page, so I downloaded it... but -and here is finally my question- where am I supposed to extract it to and are there other things I should do to get it working? Or, if I'm overcomplicating things, feel free to give me directions on what to do. Unfortunately I couldn't find anything on Ubuntu 9.10 and nvidia-gfx-71, hence I'm messing around for hours by now.
Using online Debian guide, installed latest nvidia-current, glx etc which seems to be 195.xx Machine boots to GUI but monitor setting menu doesnt respond nor is there an nvidia specific one. xorg.conf shows 'nvidia' driver but I suspect I am still on 'nouveau' since the synapatic package manager doesn't show an nvidia xserver-xorg-video choice.
Second question, any trailheads for using wheezy based drivers (i.e. nvidia's latest 270.xx) with squeeze?

BUT the main reason i had gotten so screwed up before is because i was trying to change my screen resolution. Now from having my computer for a month or so ive realized there are many diff verisons of Ubuntu and many ways of doing things. All im trying to do is change my screen from 640x480 to a more viewable size, cant think of the dimensions right now. Im running NVIDIA graphics and when i try to run display preferences from settings it obviously won't open cause it isnt configured.

Without use of the nvidia driver, my screen resolution is "too big" for the monitor.
When using the nvidia driver, the machine boots into low graphics mode and the screen is off center. Specifically, the top right corner is about 1/4 down and left of where it should be.
xvidtune doesn't work for my machine.
I've tried both the x86 and x64 versions of Ubuntu 10.04 and installed the current Nvidia hardware drivers on both. Everything works fine until I enable SLI with the --sli=AFR or --sli=OnOnce SLI is enabled there is extreme flickering relating to anything graphical.Including Compiz effects and any opengl software.Disabling SLI returns the compy back to it's good self.I would love to utilize SLI, however can't seem to find a solution for this bug.
