Apr 27, 2011Being a former user of Fedora, i decided I'd like to give Ubuntu a try and install so i could switch from a windows environment for ruby on rails development.I downloaded the 10.10 ISO and burned the image to a DVD-RW (a cheap one) at 4xI'm deployed in afghanistan right now, and the only decent internet connection i have is in my office (i work in the network administration/operations office as a NETOPS NCO) and even then my downloads rarely exceed 50kbps. I also don't really have the best pick when it comes to writable media, i'm stuck with imation "plus" cd-r's and dvd-rw's.
After i burned the image to disc, i deleted the iso from my computer since i'm genereally not suppossed to keep personal files on work computers.When i boot to the disc it takes about 45 minutes on average to load into the live environment to do the install or try ubuntu, if i select try ubuntu it's another 10 minutes before it's done loading.The install is even slower, generally takes several hours to complete the install, once the install is complete and i select ubuntu in grub, i get a { DRDY ERR } ru When it tries to load ubuntu and kicks me back into the shell. Nothing appears to be wrong with my hard drive, checkdisk finds nothing.

Ubuntu Installation :: Firefox 5 Takes All Available Memory
Jul 22, 2011a few months ago i did a fresh install of ubuntu 11.04 64-bits. it works perfectly. i'm using firefox 5.0, and in about it says mozilla firefox for ubuntu canonical 1.0.
every now and then, firefox behaves like a runaway train and starts using up all available memory, and using 100% processor time. this has been going on for a week or so. the only remedy is to kill firefox and restart it.
i'm not sure what causes this problem, but i am starting to suspect that it may be caused by flash, java, or some other plug-in or add-on that i have installed.
my add-ons are:
- adblock plus 1.3.9
- adblock plus pop-up addon 0.2.7
- delicious bookmarks 2.3.1
- delicious extension 2.3.1
- flash-aid 2.1.1
- global menu bar integration 1.0.6
- memory restart 1.4
- stumbleupon 3.91
- ubuntu firefox modifications 0.9.1
with the exception of memory restart 1.4 all these add-ons have been installed for a long time, without ever causing any problems. the problems started before installing memory restart.
my java version is icedtea, installed from the repository. i'm frequently using sweet home 3d (a java program) that runs without any problem. it doesn't make a difference whether i have sh3d running or not, the ff problem occurs regardless.
i also have installed ubuntu restricted extras version 43. videos videos don't cause problems. vimeo videos cause problems on occasion when switching to high definition and/or to full screen, but that is a known vimeo problem.
the problems certainly start when i don't use my computer for a longer period of time. i have disabled the screen saver/energy saver, but that doesn't seem to solve the problem. today i had the problem shortly after visiting a website, reason why i'm starting to suspect that the problem could be linked to some plug-in that website uses.

Jun 3, 2010just upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04LTS and upon first reboot it gets stuck at the splash screen.. it just keeps loading over and over, nothing happens.I don't have the liveCD as I just did the download from the internet via Synaptic Softwarethis is what I tried:hit ESC when GRUB menu loads.. tried to hit "e" on the boot option and nothing happens.. I was told changing quite splash to nomodeset would fix it but it doesn't even say quiet splash, unless someone wants to walk me through it.I'm soo frustrated, I have tons of e-mails and documents that I need to save.is there a fix to get me back in just so I can copy my emails and docs and do a fresh install?

Dec 26, 2010Good evening. I just loaded the latest release on my box and noticed after configuring my vid card, that Ubuntu is slow running. When I click something as simple as Ubuntu Software Manager it takes almost 30s-1m for the application to come up. If this was one of my old boxes I could understand this but this is a fairly new box.
Below are my system specs.
MB - SiS 661FX w/latest bios
CPU - P4 3.2Ghz w/1G L2 cache
Memory - 2GB unbuffered
Hard Drive - SATA Seagate 1.5TB 7200RPM drive
CDROM/DVD - Lighton SATA
Videocard - ATI HD 3600 (yes I've installed the drivers according to the Maverick Wiki)

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 On Macbook Pro - Now Takes 4 Attempts To Boot And Beeps On Restart
Apr 29, 2011I've tried to install 11.04 on my Macbook Pro (5,4) today. I had two drives in the machine, an SSD as my main drive, and an HD. I installed rEFIt before attempting to install Ubuntu. I moved my Snow Leopard install to the secondary HD & made sure I could boot to it. Then, I used the live CD & gparted to clear the 1st drive (the SSD), create the swap space, create the Ubuntu partition, and launch the install, where I used what I had just created on the SSD. The install completed okay (but with no option to select where the GRUB installer went, like some tutorials tell you to look out for). This seemed to go okay, so I went to restart at the end of the install, but the machine didn't come back up.
Instead, the power came on & I could hear the drives, but the screen stayed black, the battery light flashed a load of times really quickly (too quickly to count, but at least 10 times), and then the machine let out 1 long beep and stayed on the black screen. I forced it to power down & tried again, and just got a black screen, the battery light shining steadily, and no beep. I forced it to power down again, and got the same, then again, and got the same, and then a 4th time, which actually allowed me to boot. And this has been the pattern since then. I shut down, and my first attempt to restart gets me the flashing light and the beep, with the black screen. I try 3 more times to power down and restart, and just get the black screen. Then, *every* time on the 4th time, I'm allowed to boot.
The same routine will be gone through the next time I power down and try to restart. I've tried totally clearing the disk in gparted, restoring the OSX install from TimeMachine, everything I could think of, but all to no avail. Finally, thinking that maybe the OSX install I had safe on the secondary HD might still be okay (looking at it in gparted showed an EFI boot section & everything), I opened up my MBP, swapped the drives around so that the HD is now the main drive, and the SSD the secondary, and renamed the drives so that the primary HD is now called 'Macintosh HD' and is first in the list of drives that appear when I manage to boot each 4th attempt. But, to my great disappointment, I still got exactly the same error. Can anyone offer any advice on how to:
1) Get my machine booting to a safe Snow Leopard install on the (now primary) HD?
2) Safely install Ubuntu on the (now secondary) SSD?
Obviously the first is a top priority, as I need my machine in order to work! Then I can concentrate on moving my dev environment to Ubuntu, which I've been dying to do for ages.
Fedora Installation :: Just Vent: YUM UPDATE Takes An Hour
Feb 15, 2010Fresh 12 install. I did a yum install yum-fastestmirror and it took over 30 minutes to download its database, at a speed of 5-9 KB/s. Drove me nuts to wait 30 minutes to download a 60Kb program. Then after the install of fastest-mirror, I thought I was out of the woods, and launched a YUM UPDATE, and its still downloading fedora/filelists_db at 13KB/s. Estimated to take over 20 minutes. After that, it will be downloading the 500MB of stuff - hopefully at a better rate. Sigh!! No way to speed this up?

Apr 9, 2011I hope somebody can find a solution for the following problem: I tried to install fedora 14 from the life cd on a Dell 6400 with windows XP already installed on it. During the installation process I wanted to shrink the ntfs partition of windows. The actual used size of the windows partition was well below the one I shrinked it to. But the shrinking takes forever ( + 7 hours ) and is still running, which does not seems normal to me. Any recommendations on how to proceed ( solve ) the problem? Processors are running at 99%, so it seems to perform some work. Can this process be cancelled, without harming the windows?

Jul 12, 2010I recently broke down in the face of morbid curiosity and clicked that little version update button. it seems to run flawlessly (after i uninstalled the pesky touchpad) but it takes a long time to boot up now. at least a full minute. is this normal?
I will add also that it said my version of grub had been modified (which i dont remember doing, but may have) so i told it to leave the current one in place.

CentOS 5 :: X/Gnome Takes Long Time To Load And Sudo Takes Long Time To Execute
Oct 13, 2009I am running Centos 5.3. I ran no updates, performed no installs, nor changed any configuration immediately prior to this issue. My problem is this: when I run the command startx (default runlevel 3), it is a long time (5-10 minutes) before Gnome startx, and once it does start applications will not run. Also, when I try to use sudo (from any environment, even ssh), it is a long time (5-10) before the command is executed.
I cannot say for sure, but it seems like this is an intermittent problem. Sometimes X takes a long time to start, but once it starts it will launch programs. Sometimes X takes a long time to launch, but once it starts it will only launch certain programs. Though presently X always takes a long time to start, and I cannot successfully launch any programs.
A while back a had a similar problem to this (x taking long time to start, sudo taking long time to execute) and it ended up being a DNS problem. Unfortunately, I cannot remember exactly what it was and I stupidly did not document it. Maybe this is also DNS related, I don't know.
I don't know what log files to look at for problems with X, Gnome, and sudo taking a long time to start.

Sep 10, 2010I have a Computer, It came with Windows 7 64bit on it. I installed Ubuntu through WUBI. I used the Windows Disk Management program to resize my HDD. I shrunk the main drive and created a 20 gig free space. I installed WindowsXP on this 20g space. I had to change from AHCI to ATA. I started my new XP installation. As I should have expected my the screen that let me pick between Windows 7 and Ubuntu was gone, and it just said XP. Well thats cool. I get in XP use bcdeasy and use the install Win7 to mbr. So I restarted. Great I now I have Ubuntu and Win7... but no XP. So i think, okay, ill boot into Ubuntu, use the update grub command and XP will be there, so i do it and restart. No XP, So i try to boot into Win7 and see if i can do something in there.. No luck it says it can't boot and takes me to a startup recovery thing. Which, as Windows recovery things tend to do, doesn't find anything wrong. So I have Ubuntu now, which is great, but I do need Windows.

Aug 17, 2010i finally decided to updgrade from Hardy Heron to Lucid Lynx. for this i made a backup of my old install, then i couldnt find my Lucid CD so i used a Karmic one to partition my old ext3 to ext4. There were some errors but after trying a few times it worked. Installed Karmic, rebooted (worked fine), downloaded all updates - (did NOT reboot to let updates take effect) and upgraded to Lucid.
Everything went fine so far. Now when i try to boot into Lucid the system hangs, i've also got a windowsXP partition on there so i tried booting that, first grub tells me Error 29: Disk write error then trying again windows seems to boot but it takes much longer than it should and seems to hang.
Then i tried Karmic and Lucid LiveCD (which i found in the meantime) none of the LiveCDs make it to boot after about 20 minutes. (previously they worked fine)looking at the errors it seems to be something about the harddrive. Why the harddrive would stop the LiveCD booting is a mystery to me but the same messages appear when i select Recovery from the Grub menu so i guess the problem is related.

Nov 14, 2010I am trying to upgrade from 10.4 to 10.10. I have never had a problem upgrading before with the Update Manager. Now I get an error message when using the Update Manager. The message says, "Could not calculate the upgrade". See screenshots. I also checked the package manager for broken packages and came up with nothing.
