Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Won't Recognize Hard Disk?

I'm trying to install 10.04 but during the Prepare Partitions step no hard disk is listed for me to partition.
The hard disk is a Seagate SATA (7200.7) drive and my motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3. The hard disk works because I just installed a fresh copy of Windows XP on it without a problem and the OS on the disk prior to this was an older version of Debian.
Does anyone know how I can get my hard disk listed so I can install 10.04?
I've been trying for hours now to get Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Remix onto my HP Mini 1030NR. It boots up fine from the flash drive, but then when I go to install UNR on the hard drive I get through the first 3 steps and then get stuck. It goes to the "Prepare partitions" screen but no devices are shown to be partitioned. I formatted the hard drive I'm trying to install on on another computer to NTFS, so it should be blank and ready to go? I should probably mention the drive doesn't show up in GParted either. Is there something obvious I'm overlooking?

I am trying to install Ubuntu 11.04 64bit on my computer, I downloaded it onto my flashdrive from [URL]... When I reach the installation screen all the boxes are checked except 4.4Gb of space available, I know I have enough space because I am using a 1TB hard drive, I also have Windows 7 installed and it recognizes my hard drive. I have tried this with my hard drive partitioned and unpartitioned. I only have 1 hard drive and it has never been part of a raid array. I've also looked on google and the Ubuntu forums and still can't find anything relevant
I've bought new PC, and installed win 7 first. Then i've resized my disc and left the half of it unallocated for my ubuntu. But the ubuntu installer doesnt see my hard disk. when i run fdisc -l, the only thing that i see is my usb from wich i'm booting. I know that this is a common problem, searched for help on the web for hours and nothing worked.
I'm install it onto my laptop (its about 4 years old - a Sony Vaio VGN FS315E).
I have been given a live disk of the latest edition of ubuntu (10.4?) by someone at work, but my CD drive on my laptop seems to think the disk is blank. I know this is not the case as when the disk is inserted into a different laptop is it recognised as an ubuntu installation disk.
My aim to boot ubuntu from the disk to get a feel for what it's like before installing it fully on my laptop, and also to check that it would work on said laptop.
I have 4 hard drives in my computer...2x 74gb raptorsand 2x 640gb caviar blacksi just wiped windows 7 from the first raptor to install linux... now when i try to install linux it tries combining the 2 raptors as a raid (which i don't have them set up for)i just want to install it on my 1st raptor.i disabled the dmraid and that took care of it trying to combine them as a raid, but then it won't recognize either of the raptors.so i try gparted to format them. and i succeed.but when i try to install again. it still doesn't recognize the raptors... and only my 640gb blacksso i disconnected the power from the blacks... but to no avail, now no hard drives show up when i'm trying to install ubuntu... i am stumped.sorry if that doesn't make much sense... ask questions and i will be glad to answer them, its very frustrating.
There are 3 IDE drives in this box. hda has Debian Lenny installed (with swap) and is to remain. hdb1 has a linux distro on it. hdb2 is a data partition and is to remain. No other partitions on hdb. HDD is data only (not really relevant but mentioned for completeness) The system boots via Grub from MBR on hda.
I'm trying to install F10-i686-KDE-LiveCD on hdb1 but F10 won't allow it without modifying the partition tables which will, of course, wipe my data on hdb2. hdb seems to be a happy disk; e2fsck shows it clean and both partitions open properly in Konqueror within the LliveCD.
When I'm installing Red Hat 7, an error was occurred, in fact the installation process does not recognize my hard driver? how can resolve this trouble?
after installing Ubuntu on one WD 500 GB hard disk and after making mistake and pasting wrong code into Terminal:my OTHER WD 500 GB hard disk that was also in the system (I guess it was "hd1") - died.The problem must be, I guess, I typed wrong code: "hd1,1" instead of "hd0,0".)500 GB (NTFS) of data was on that other (non-Ubuntu) hard disk, and now I can not access it anymore. While booting, system gives "Hard Disk Error" warning and stops.One again: I installed Ubuntu od one hard disk and at the end of instalation I pasted wrong code for GRUB, giving address of another hard disk. Now that other hard disk has error and will not work
I have reinstalled XP and conseqently messed up Grub and lost Ubuntu. I am trying to do a fresh install but the installer insists on trying to overwrite the whole disk. I downloaded the alternate instal ISO as this has got over this problem in the past but this also wanted to overwrite the whole disk. It recognises the Sata Raid array as being nfts (this is my main data disk) but it doesn't recognise the existing partitions on my main disk:
I have this laptop that I just reformatted in hopes of doing a dual boot between XP and FC4. It is an Acer Aspire 5315-2153 (the Wal-Mart special). I reformatted the drive; the Windows partition is in NTFS and then I have a 10GB partition in FAT32 for Linux. When I try to install FC4, the disk boots into the installer, then it tells me that it does not recognize any hard drives (the disk in this laptop is a Hitachi HTS541680J9SA00). It asks me if I want to load any drivers, and I tried a few and still no success. Any way, after it goes through that, it tries to start anaconda and after that launches it goes to a black screen and nothing happens. So, did I do anything wrong in the Windows install that won't allow the disk to be found? The XP disk only allows a format in NTFS, otherwise I would have done FAT32 on the whole drive. Second, is the anaconda problem something related to the HDD issue, or does anyone think that it may be a separate issue?
I've had Ubuntu 10.10 installed for a while and I recently cleared a partition to install Windows XP. However, when I load from the Windows XP boot CD, I get "7379one MB disk 0 at ID 0 on ?Bus 0 on atapi(Setup cannot access this disk)". I've tried just about everything
I have a sata 320 gb with mandriva linux 2009.1 on it.And it is what curently atached to my cpu. It is shown as 'sda' in the partition table.I also have another 40gb hard disk with windows xp installed on it.It is shown as 'hda' in the partition table . Now what i want to do is attach this 40gb hard disk to my pc and configure grub on my 320gb hard disk('sda') so as to boot windows xp(which is residing on the second hard disk,'hda')Can anyone tell me if what im doing is feasible or not? If it is feasible,can anyone suggest me how to get it working. I know i just need to add 2-3 lines to my grub.conf, but dont know what exactly i need to write.
I had a dual boot (windows 7 + debian), both of them installed in my internal hard disk, with the GRUB in it. I have recently installed a second linux distro (mint), but I put it in an external hard disk. Now the GRUB allows me to boot any of the three operating systems, but I need the external disk to do it. It seems that after the mint installation the GRUB is now working from the external disk (if the external disk is not connected, the machine does not boot.) �Is there a way to change the location of the GRUB, to the internal hard disk of my laptop?
I was using Terminal and browsing a directory in my home folder. My "home" directory is located on "/dev/sdb1". When in Terminal I typed "ls" in one of my directories and the output was garbage. The output didn't show the files in the directory. I think it said something like, "input/output error". Unfortunately, I didn't write the exact error down. I would like to install Fedora 11 on an ASUS P5L-VM 1394 motherboard with a 3 GHz Pentium 4 CPU. This is an LGA775 socket mobo with a Intel 945G chipset. Two SATA hard drives are plugged into SATA ports. An IDE DVD drive is plugged into the IDE/ATA port. Using the 32 bit Fedora 11 installation disk, I have seen two cases:
1) No hard drive recognized. When i get to the disk configuration screen, there are no options to choose from.
2) By monkeying around with the BIOS settings or switching the SATA ports the disks are connected to, I can get an alternative mode in which no drivers are found for the DVD drive either.
Currently, a version of Ubuntu is installed. UPDATE: The board was purchased in a P3-PH4C barebones, which for unknown reasons requires a different BIOS issue than the regular P5L-VM 1394. Updating to the most recent BIOS does not resolve the problem. One the installation procedure fails to recognize the hard drives, going into a shell and examining the boot up log shows that the kernel recognized both hard drives. So it's down to why the installation procedure is not recognizing them.
I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 amd64 on a system I recently built that currently has Windows 7 installed.
Strangely, when I booted from the install disk, I got an unrecoverable error. [URL] said in that case, try to install from a live session, so I did that.
Live session install worked fine until I got to the partitioning section of the setup. Nothing displayed in the partition space and all my partition options were greyed out!
I have tried several things. I tried booting from my Lubuntu 32 bit that I know works (running on my laptop), it could not detect the hard disk either.
I tried booting into Windows 7 and shrinking the partition in the Windows partition manager and seeing if Ubuntu's installer would detect the space that way...no such luck.
cfdisk would not work either. Gave a big fat cannot access the disk error.
fdisk -l displays nothing. Gparted from the live session is a no-go as well.

I wouldn't think that Ubuntu should have a problem detecting this...
I have a problem with seeing the partitions from a hard disk in ubuntu after installing updates. I installed the fresh 10.10 x64 desktop edition yesterday and I could've seen everything from the live CD. I think that it started to be missing after installing about 65 updates (those were the recommended updates).
In windows 7 everything is fine. I can see every partition like this:
Disk 0 and Disk 2 are basically the same (SATA) and Disk 1 is a rather old ATA drive, but in Ubuntu I can only see the partitions from the Disk 1 and 2. Ubuntu is installed to the 93.13 GB partition on Disk 2. Grub is installed to Disk 1 and it is the first boot device (not sure if this matters). The partitions from Disk 0 are not displayed on the Places menu bar.
After typing:

It only displays some info about Disk 1 and partition Storage and then hangs. The hdd led is lit constantly. It doesn't even display the info about the partitions on Disk 2, even though if I can browse those two partitions. And when I want to reboot, the ubuntu logo displays but it hangs there and I think that this is due to this problem with the hdd recognition.
I'm running ubuntu from a usb currently. However, when I try to install it, it looks for the root disk on step 4 of the installation, and nothing is shown. I can't go on with the installation since I can't select a disk to install to.
I'm on an hp pavillion laptop.
By the way, windows vista is installed but won't currently boot. Don't know why. Is it probably a problem with the hard disk (the cause of both issues)
my brand new laptop with ubuntu pre installed has an 80gb hard disk.however i dont find any drives in /media except for cdrom and cdrom0.it says 8 mb free.how do i access my hard disk.its 80GB SATA disk.
This afternoon I finally had the time to run this Ubuntu KK CD and load over my old xp/Jaunty J partition. I had previously run the distro. through the CD, without harming my old partition. On doing so the system consistently reported my Toshiba ATA 120 gig hard disk had multiple bad sectors and was failing. As a true end user (who mucks only when necessary with the CLI) I just figured writing over the partition would end the failure. To be sure I ran Memtest8.66 v2.11 from the LiveCD; everything checked out fine. So I installed KK.
Or was I? Why did it still have the "Install ubuntu 9.10 ISO" icon on the left hand side of the screen? How did the CD come to whir when I tried starting apps like Open Office? Something wasn't right. So I rebooted, this time from the HDD. The start up looked predictable - there's that PXE-E361 Media Test Failure on some cable, I've been staring at that since I built the dual partition. But what's this? PXE-MOF: exiting EXE ROM. Huh? This is a Toshiba Satellite A105 with a 200 gH 1gig Pentium M. When I boot the liveCD I get this trial environment that works fine. When I try installing from it I can even see that I'm writing over the previous, whole 9.10 partition I created this afternoon. Regardless when I boot from HDD I get that weird letter j..
I've checked on line for boot issues, and the forum too, but so far haven't seen an issue booting from the HDD, especially when the distro. is already loaded. What am I missing here, and how do I install it from a live CD environment?
I'm using Meerkat in my Inspiron 1525... 160gb hard disk... But nautilus is showing that the disk capacity is 120gb... So should I update my BIOS? If yes, how do I do it? I tried searching the net and my brain's dead... Kindly help me fellow ubuntuans...
Recently I had installed "Storage Device Manager", since because my hard drive partitions were not mounted correctly during installation.
I own to hard disk "sda" 120 GB & "sdb" 1000 GB , since during boot time i had mounted the "sda" having 3 partitions of windows on locations "/partion_name 1, 2, & 3" at root, and "sdb" was not mounted during instalation.
After installation I had added "sdb" with my system and was working fine.
But "sba" was mounted at "/partion_name 1, 2, & 3", But I wanted to change this type of partion what "sdb" i.e it should prompt me for the password when I use to mount it, So I tried to change the mount type for the "sba" But wasn't able to do this beacause of error "Disk is been used by other process".
Now what i require is to mount "sda" partitions such as It may prompt for password when I try to mount and in "sdb1" having partions "sdb10" to be mounted automatically during boot time and the rest partions have to be prompted for password when I try to mount it.Is it possible..?
*Please suggest me the whole procedure in manual manner(Command line) for the same *Also using "Storage Device Manager" *if I remove "Storage Device Manager" in future thus it effct my system partitions *If I mount the partition in "/media/partion_name" thus it will solve my problem.
I have installed Kubuntu on external WD HDD , it does NOT boot on this laptop but works on couple of other laptops , attached is the results txt output of the boot_info...sh.I can boot with USB flash drive that has kubuntu live Cd image when I use the external HDD ,it gives a blinking cursor only
There was an option during installation of 10.10 to encrypt the hard disk (or was it only the home folder?). I thought, hmm, I should probably do this, but I'll decide later, thus, installed 10.10 without encrypting the hard disk.Now, I want to encrypt the hard disk but don't see anywhere in the System Preference or Administration where I can do that. Am I missing it? Or how do I do this now?
