Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Install "quick Format"?

Sep 13, 2010

New install 10.04.1 on 1.3 TB HD Problem is, that it formats the partitions full format. This takes a VERY long time. Is there any way I can avoid this?

I tried fiddling with the partition settings, but can't find anything. Also tried making a manual partitioning, still no luck. Only making "/" (ext4) and "swap"Also I'm installing as a VmWare machine, with a growable disk. (Thin Provisioning),That is kinda stupid, when it makes a full format.

Is there a quick and easy way to install 32-bit software on my 64-bit Fedora 11 machine? I've got some software that is 32-bit but can't use them because I lack those library files etc. needed to run them. The programs I'm trying to get to work are : LightZone 3.7 and Bibblepro both photo software.I'd hate to go back to Ubuntu 9.04 64-bit (it worked and all that was need were ia32libs I believe.)

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Boot After Format And Install 10.10?

Feb 20, 2011

Recently I removed Windows XP pro using Kill Disk and a 000 overwrite on the drive. After that I used GParted format the drive and create a new ext 3 partition then I installed Ubuntu 10.10 from a live CD.

This system has only 10.10 installed. There are no other OS's present. Installing of 10.10 went well and all the the files are now on the drive. However, now the system will not reboot from the drive. When attempting to boot I get a an error message which advise that the medium is not bootable. I am then forced to use the live CD to boot from the CD.

I'm not sure if formatting a drive creates a new mbr or not. If not then I would have to create one and I don't know how to do that. I've read a number of forum posts on how to use GRUB to repair the mbr - however I haven't found any that specifically deal with replacing a missing mbr.

I suspect that when I used Kill Disk it trashed the MBR. I could really use some help figuring out the nature of the problem and how to fix it. I'm fairly new to Ubuntu so please be as exact as possible if you reply.

Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

Ubuntu Installation :: Format The Hard Drive And Re-Install?

Jun 23, 2010

An upgrade %100 pwnd my system: I performed an upgrade to Lucid from Karmic and I lost my keyboard input and sound etc etc etc. I then made a Karmic boot-run/install CD, & a USB startup stick. I then backed up my important information on flashdrives etc. At this point in time I have 2 partitions one with my old user account & info on it, and the other as a new (re)installed Karmic partition. My question is: What is the procedure for:

a) formatting the drive,
b) not keeping the 2 partitions, and
c) re-installing Ubuntu (karmic) back onto it?

I have GParted ( but I can't see how to use it to format ), and I have no clue how to format the Drive from either within the GUI or at the command-line. How do I format & re-install Ubuntu? What is the sequence or steps? I can probably do the re-install intuitively but I'm concerned there may be Ubuntu tricks I don't know about! Also- does this 2 partition thing cause any complications to formatting?? So honestly my question is simply how to format the drive from within the system.

Ubuntu Installation :: Quick Python Script For Updating Machines Without Internet?

Mar 17, 2011

I've been having some problems trying to get a new netbook working with China Telecom's 3G service (works wonderfully in Windows, but still trying to figure Ubuntu out), so until I figure out the problem with this Huawei modem, I've written a quick python script to handle updates/installations on the Ubuntu side. (Synaptic does fine on generating download scripts for packages, but it needs an option to handle updates as well)

If anyone else has a use for this, you're welcome to use it. Please let me know what needs to be changed to make it work on your box.

Installation :: Quick Dual Booting Operating Systems

Jul 26, 2010

I have no clue how Linux works and I haven't had much experience installing/dual booting operating systems. Most of my knowledge in computers comes from fixing errors with crappy hardware or Windows. Now I want to learn how to use a computer instead of how to fix it. Hence, I want to have Windows & Linux on my computer. My laptop(Acer Aspire 4530) has two hard drives, one is Vista and the other was empty(until I filled it with stuff). What is the simplest method to install Linux (or any of its variations) on this computer? Do I just install/partition all of Drive B to Linux and leave Drive A for Vista?

OpenSUSE Install :: Quick Query About Default Root Partition Size?

Sep 14, 2011

I'm dual booting with Win Xp at the moment and have been google-ing and tinkering about with my distro and i'm learning new stuff everyday but I have a question about something that's been bothering me. I think i've figured out that the / partition is similar to the C: Drive in windows which contains program files n stuff am i right? and the home partition which contains users and their files is an offshoot of the root?

So if this is the case, i was in the expert partitioner in YAST to see how the the drive was partitioned and was wondering if the / partition was too big and if i could decrease the size and add it to the /home?. My sys specs are 512mb RAM Dell Dimension 3000 with an 80GB HDD 2.8Ghz Intel Celeron. I also have a 80Gb and 160Gb External laptop drives mainly for my movies n music n stuff. Also is the Swap partition a good size for the spec of computer i have?

Here's the HDD Breakdown:

/dev/sda 74.51GB
/dev/sda1 29.52 GB NTFS /windows/c
/dev/sda2 44.99GB Extended

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Install Without Format Hides Partition Contents

May 27, 2011

I have been using a kubuntu 10.10 till last week when it could not complete do-release-upgrade, so I downloaded kubuntu 11.04, specifying that I did not want my /home partition to be formatted, and went ahead with the installation. I used ext4 under 10.10 and selected ext4 again for 11.04, yet when I first rebooted after the completion of the installation, I could not find any of my files in that partition (except a newly created user home folder with the same user name as the old one). But when I looked at du -h, it's 92% full. I know I have set the mount point correctly, so it shouldn't be a fstab problem. What I should do to recover the files?

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Hard Drive Install - Format It To Ext3 Filing System?

Mar 20, 2010

I have a 160Gig and a 40 Gig drive.I would like to install the system on the 160 Gig, and use the 40 Gig drive as a storage for backups or whatever. It appears in the installation process that I am required to use a mount point, which would then turn the drive over to the root system, which would not allow it to be totally available to me.I just want to format it to ext3 filing system.Coffeecat, if you are out there and see this, strange things are happening to the 40 Gig drive - it says it is using 2 gig, but it is totally empty of all system files, hidden files, trash, etc. and it is being imaged in the media folder in root. I believe I have messed this install up to the point of no return and think I should go ahead and start over.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 - Quick Freeze When Logging

Jun 1, 2011

Perhaps there is something on the net about this, however I couldn't find the correct keywords (and there are many other but similar problems) and didn't find anything. You know that when logging in, if you enter a wrong password, you'll have to wait a few seconds before giving it another try to avoid bruteforcing. However, when I enter the correct password in 11.04, it makes me wait a few seconds and then loads my desktop (fluxbox in my case, but the same problem remains in Unity).

I uninstalled synaptic from a terminal by typing [CODE] apt-get remove synaptic. Then I reinstalled using [CODE] apt-get install synaptic. Reinstalling did not fix the problem. Does anyone have an idea how to fix this?
