Ubuntu :: Install Folder For Qt SDK?
Aug 1, 2010
I was going to install Qt using the Ubuntu Software Centre to do it automatically, but it didn't look like it had the latest version. I downloaded the .bin file from the official Qt website, and have run the package to install it, but now the installer GUI is asking for an install directory. Ubuntu/Linux noob question: Where should I install it? The default is "/home/dohzer/qtsdk-2010.04", but is there a directory programs are normally installed to? Does it actually matter? I've noticed some sites saying programs are installed to somewhere within "/usr", but I don't know where exactly, and I don't think I have access to this directory (I have root access if it's needed).

I want to install an executeable and I am not sure how to do this. My intuition was to copy the executeable in the /usr/bin folder, but when I call it now, it says permission denied (and obviously I don't want to call the program with sudo every time).

I've been setting up a media server on a an actual server machine I picked up dirt cheap, and had it running xUbuntu fine. gave it a 5gig root directory, 5gig swap partiton, and three 34gig storage drives. Everything was running smoothly.
Just recently I learned that the 5gig's dedicated to running my operating system of choice, aren't enough to install all the software I wanted(I might be just a little greedy). The first logical step to correcting this problem was to move /etc to one of the storage drives and create a link were it was, but not being entirely sure how xUbuntu would take that, I thought I'd get an expert opinion.
The thread prefix is "all variants" because I have installed the desktops for kUbuntu and just plain Ubuntu on this machine(what I meant by being a little greedy).

I'm still running 9.10, but now would like to install 10.10. Now I'm wondering about how to keep access to my encrypted home folder.
Usually, I don't do an 'upgrade', but a fresh re-install. I have a separate /home partition, so normally this works just fine. However, my home directory is encrypted (a feature that was introduced with 9.10, I believe).
So, if I whack the system partition and do a fresh reinstall there, will the new install still be able to read my home directory? Or do I need to save a key file from somewhere?

I had my home folder on it's own partition, and I decided to do a clean install of 11.04. when I put the disk, when I went to configure the partitions, I I re-formatted the / partition, and I selected my home partition as my new home partition and I made sure the format was NOT selected. after everything got done getting installed and rebooted. 11.04 just creates a new home directory and does not use the whole home partition.
I still have my data saved on it, when I go to the disk utility it shows the same amount of used space before I did a re-installed. If I go to the files system and click on home it shows my user from the last install and it shows the user from the new install. when I click on the user from last install it shows 2 files: Access-Your-Private-Data.desktop
and: README.txt
get my home partition mounted for my home folder
also when I set up the new install I used the same password for access for the ring keys and for login

I'm using ubuntu server 9.10 for a home build NAS. Everything is working great just have one more thing to figure out. I have Samba set up to access my files and I set up a recycle feature so anything deleted will get moved to a Recycled folder. (I learned this the hard way after hitting delete key by accident while browsing the shares in windows. Lost 100 GB of data)
Now it is for the most part working but the permissions on folders isn't getting set right. If I delete a file in a share I can go to Recycle bin folder and delete the file for good. But if I delete a folder I can not access that folder to delete or restore from the Recycle bin folder. I have to chmod the folder before I can do anything with it. Anything I can change to get folders deleted via windows to have the right permissions when it is moved to the Recycle bin folder?

I cannot change directory to a more than three folder tree destination folder from ~ in terminal. I've checked everything. No Typos or misspell. The destination folder was recognized by "ls" command but when I went to it, the terminal said, "no such file or directory."

I have this nasty habit of refreshing desktop in a quick succession by right-clicking and selecting 'Refresh',on my XP system at office.(And,iam sure most of us do the same). With Ubuntu,if a right-click on desktop slowly and select 'align by...',it simulates the XP refresh action as explained above. But,if i perform the same action rapidly,it takes this first option from right-click context menu, which is 'Create Folder',and results in an empty folder being created on desktop.I tried double right-clicking and again it created an empty folder. Is there any workaround to handle this.I mean:Can the right-click context menu items be shuffled so that the 'Create Folder' option is moved from 1st place

When I get my partitions listed in the terminal or in GParted they go up sequentially to sda7 as they should. The media folder in my file system shows the other dual boot OS and a data disk partition, both mounted, which is correct. All good. But there is a third strange folder titled sda8 however I have no such partition. /etc/fstab shows no sda8 either. When I open /media/sda8, it shows no files, says its empty and lists an empty available space that equals the empty space on the Linux OS partition in which the folder sits. But no pie chart shown, and it belongs to root. I changed the permission and found I can save files to it.

Running kubuntu 11.04x64 w/ xrender and folder-view plasmoid:
I cannot view "open with" for directories on the desktop (but it is visible w/in dolphin file structure) and whenever I try to rename folders on the desktop it crashes and restarts (but the rename is successful and no open windows crash).
This glitch is reproducible under OpenGL and Xrender; had to switch over to xrender after a recent system update that seems to slow my computer to a crawl after a little time and kept it cause it seems much smoother and crisper.
Is there any way to fix these issues or is there an alternative to the folder-view plasmoid to view a folder content on the desktop that is more stable?

When I position icons on the desktop in specific places, then I choose to move a file or folder into another folder, all the icons arrange back to the left side. This happened in an earlier version of KDE 4.x, disappeared the next version, and reappeared. how to keep this from happening. It makes using the desktop a pain in the you know what.

2-search and replace a statement in all open files
3-have an extended mode which include special characters like
and so on.. i want to know if there is an editor with this feature in ubuntu?

I have 9.04 in my laptop and I want to make a clean install of Lynx.
My home partition is sda7 (ext4), so in the partition step during the install I'm telling the installer to use the partition as ext4 but don't format it (I'm explicitly checking sda6 as / mount point and set to format as ext4).
On the next step I see disabled options regarding the access to my home folder and "Require my password to log in and decrypt my home folder" is checked.
My current home partition is not an encrypted partition, so I am not sure of what will happen. I just want it to mount it and access it as Ext4, not encrypt it.
I also have a Private folder in my home partition, what will happen to it? Will I be able to mount it afterwards?

I would like to give a few students a preconfigured Ubuntu USB stick with certain apps. I also encrypted the home folder in case of loss.
With TrueCrypt, cloning an encrypted container would be a big no-no because any one could just backup their header with a known pw and use it to decrypt anyone else's container due to each container using the same master key. I assumes the same applies to home folder encryption, yes?
Is there a way, other than creating a new user with home folder encryption, of forcing a master key change?

i want to install package say PHP5 i have all the dependencies packages of php5 in a folder.or say i have all the packages in a folder and i want to install using dpkg
but when i try to install the main package it say these dependencies are missing.there are more than 40-50 packages so its not possible to install manully first one package and then another.eg:
Code:
bhupinder packages # dpkg -i apache2_2.2.17-1ubuntu1_i386.deb
(Reading database ... 140101 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to replace apache2 2.2.17-1ubuntu1 (using apache2_2.2.17-1ubuntu1_i386.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement apache2 ...
[Code]...
now i have to install rest of the package manually ...is there any solution so that i can install it with single command...???

After upgrading to 11.04, I noticed something strange, being that when I want to drag a file or folder from one Nautilus folder window to another which is not visible, I can no longer hold the item over said folder's taskbar button and wait for it to appear. It just shows the + for copy, and when I let go (which I have no choice but to eventually do), it creates a launcher to that item (I assume it's doing that, and not actually copying there, but the + has me unsure).
I've looked in Nautilus's preferences to see if this is some new behaviour that I can revert back to, but could find nothing there.
I'm of course using the Classic desktop with bottom panel being the taskbar. If you know how I can rectify this, please let me know, as the times I would want to create a file or folder launcher without the usual hassle would be rare, but I am constantly dragging stuff from one folder to another, and it would be a real pain to have to line up source and destination folders each time.
