Ubuntu :: Insert Pictures In ODF File, Not Internet Links To Them
May 30, 2011
When I copy and paste something from a web site, links to pictures are inserted, not actual pictures.
When I disconnect from the Internet, I cannot see pictures which is annoying.
Do you know how to make LibreOffice copy and paste actual pictures into a Writer document?

Running Ubuntu 10.10 along side Windows7 on a 64-bit HP Pavilion dv7 Laptop. Everything works in Windows. Everything works in Ubuntu, except for 2 things.1) I can live with not being able to enable/disable wifi.) I cannot read photos from an SD card plugged into the laptops SD card reader. When I open the SD card in Ubuntu, I can see the file name, but the thumbnails show messed up pictures. Usually, the bottom half of the photo is solid green, and there are usually lines running through the photo, or it is divided into quadrants with one quadrant being ok, but the rest having the green and/or lines.I assume the driver for the card reader is not correct. Card reader works fine in Windows. So I have to reboot into windows, copy pictures from reader to a folder, then reboot into Ubuntu and I can see and open the photos just fine. Just cannot read and copy them from the card while in Ubuntu.

I'm looking for a way to insert the number of lines in a file to the start of the aformentioned file. This should be simple but as I am not used to scripts in Linux, I am finding it tough going. I can find the number of lines in a file easily enough via
filesize=$(awk 'END {print NR}' $1)
but as for inserting this into the first line, i'm failing to do so. I've tried some of the other approaches on these forums but none so far have been able to do so.
I've tried:
sed '1i$filesize' $1
but sed i requires a string, not a variable so no go I've also tried:
mv "$1" "${1}.bak" 2>/dev/null || touch "${1}.bak"
cat $filesize "${1}.bak" >"$1"
but again with no luck as cat seems to need an input stream Just to recap, i want to insert a line at the start of a given file that holds the number of lines the original file has.
ie the file:
a
b
c
d
e
should become:
5
a
b
c
[code].....

As far as I can tell, the server guides only explain a bit about what dynamic routing is, but not how to implement it.
My situation is this:
We require a server with 3 interfaces. One local, one to a vsat link and the other to a fibre link. The fibre will be the default route for Internet traffic but we want dynamic routing to automatically switch to the vsat link when the fibre link goes down (which happens fairly often in Zimbabwe!) and then switch back to the fibre link when it comes back up again.
The first option would be to handle dynamic routing on a Cisco router, but at the prices of Cisco devices here, it's not the most affordable option.

I have an Actiontec GT724WGR and I am having problems with my Ubuntu server. I set up a subdomain on freedns.afraid.org with my main computer's external ip. However whenever I use the link that was made it goes to my router configuration page instead of onto my server. I have already set up a static ip for my server enabled DMZ hosting and under port forwarding applied every single rule that applied to servers.

I'm researching about symbolic links been used with samba / CIFS:I'd like that the user that uses a MS-Windows OS could see my shared folder on CentOS 5 and the symbolic links that are inside this folder. Well, it works but, the user will see that the size of the file is bigger than the real file. Apparently, CIFS gets the size of the symbolic link (aproxim.32K) and add it to the size of the file.Example 1: 100KB file, used with shared folder, MS-Windows's user will see 100KBExample 2: 100KB file, used with symbolic link inside a shared folder, MS-Windows's user will see 132KB. (Sym link + size of file)Is there a way to allow the user only see the size of the file, and not the file + symbolic links ?

I am trying to open a .rar file with encrypted pictures in it. I use the command line in terminal
unrar --password (file name) (file destination)
it gives me the option next, to put in a password and finally, it says extracting (file name) failed
Is this because the password is wrong (im 99% sure it is right) or because the command is wrong or something?

At my Uni, we use a web-based login for our internet connections. Its based off of Cisco, and every Wednesday night every computer on campus must re-enter their credentials to use the network.
Normally on my several computers I simply pull up the Terminal, point links to google.com using
Code:
And enter my credentials when Cisco redirects to the login page.
Literally, the process is
Code:
Then ENTER to accept the redirect, down arrow to skip over the logo image, USERNAME, ENTER, PASSWORD, ENTER, ENTER.
Naturally, this is EXTREMELY time consuming, as I have about 5 computers located around campus and must physically walk to the machines and login every single week.
My question is, How would I formulate a program that does the following;
1) checks for connectivity (i.e. is able to reach/resolve to the greater part of the internet) and
2) automatically fills in the credentials on the links login page?

I would like to store JPG files in a mysql database table. I figured that using BLOB fields on the one hand and the 'load_file' command on the other would do the trick. Here is how I set up the table:
mysql> create table blobtable (id int(10) not null auto_increment,
fileName varchar(15) not null,
file longblob not null, primary key(id) );
Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.51 sec)
Then I tried to enter the data:
mysql> insert into blobtable(filename,file)values('pic',load_file('/var/www/temp/IMGP4764.JPG'));
Which got me the following error signal:
ERROR 1048 (23000): Column 'file' cannot be null
It seems to me that the file path to the JPG file (although correct) is the source of the problem, and is causing the load_file command not to work. My first attempt was with the JPG file in my PC's home directory. When that returned the same error message, I figured that maybe the file had to be in the PC's (server's) web area so I put it under the 'www' directory.

I'm a newbie on Linux and had to do something like this with the zip command:
My folder structure inside a zip file abc.zip is code...
It would move into abc.zip as folder3/textfile.txt (the hierarchy preserved)
Also used a -j switch (help said it junked the path info and it did but) - it would move only into abc.zip and sit at the same level as folder1 and folder2 instead of replacing the textfile.txt within abc.zip/folder1
My question is - I want to replace the abc.zip/folder1/textfile.txt with the one inside seconddir/folder3/textfile.txt.
How do I achieve this via the command line interface?

I have a personal wiki of notes, with now thousands of links in markdown format:
[link text](http://example.com)
but now that fckeditor is available for mediawiki (very beta), it has become much better to just stick with wikitext format. There are only a few conversions to do: tables, links, and bulleted lists. The lists are a fairly simple regex and fckeditor magically reformats the tables, so all I'm left with is the links. But I'm not a regex master. How do I reformat code...

I am trying to create a shell script where a user can specify a file with a list of logins and the script will create a batch file with specific information in specific columns.
Example:
loginfile.txt has
User1
User2
User3
I need the output to be as below:
1 User1 Date 12/31/9999
2 User2 Date 12/31/9999
3 User3 Date 12/31/9999
Where the columns are separated as below.
1[tab][tab]User1[tab]date +%D[tab]12/31/9999
2[tab][tab]User2[tab]date +%D[tab]12/31/9999
3[tab][tab]User3[tab]date +%D[tab]12/31/9999
I can use the nl utility to get the numbers easily enough, but I need two tab separations between the number and the user list. Is there a sed command that will insert at the beginning of each line? If so I can just run nl after I get some tabs up in the front.

My hosting server is running Linux / Apache. It would be very nice to be able to link some files (preferably hard links, but symbolic links also would help), but haven't a clue how to do so. I would be willing to write a server side php script if that would do the trick.

I am, as the forum title suggests, new to linux and to programming and having trouble figuring out how to do this.I have a very large XML file with a lot of information in it. I'm trying to get a single tag out of the file, each of these tags contains a single web link and I want to download the file at every single one of those links. I really don't know how to do this.My thought, though its probably not the most efficient or correct way, was to use VIM to search the document and somehow extract all of this one particular tag and then use wget on the links.

How do we check as to how many links have been created that point to a particular file?
Let's say there is this file /work/contacts.dat
and we have, let's say, 10 soft links that have been created by different users in their home directories. Now how can I figure by looking at the file /work/contacts.dat that there are 10 (soft or hard)links pointing to this particular file so that I know that it is being used or refered to by those many users and before deleting it I can check with them.

I have multiple HTML files in a folder. there is a <h2> tag like this:
Code:
<h2>some text</h2>
in each file. I want to write a shell script/batch file to add this tag in <head> section of each file:
Code:
<!-- TITLE= "same text from h2 tag" -->
Note that <h2>some text</h2> in some files has 1 or more linebreaks and so I couldn't capture tag content using a simple grep or...
for example:
<h2>first part of text
second line of text</h2>
The line break shouldn't be shown in <!-- TITLE= "same text from h2 tag" -->. The script has to capture tag content & skip line breaks.
