the system volume on login is max, though my login sound is approximately half. it is not the sound itself, considering when i play it once i'm logged in, its max; just when i log in it seems to be more quiet...
Some audio output from files or streams is too low. It is obvious that hardware is able to play the same sounds but louder but because of the data it just plays it at some low level even at 100% volume. Vlc can generally increase the volume of a file up to 200%. Is there a way to do the same thing VLC does system-wide and if possible for an arbitrary v percentage value.
If there is no application that does this, where should i look into for libs to do it myself or what code should i modify(eg code in the alsamixer)
Note: Asked the same thing on stackoverflow and they directed me here.
I have a problem with my sound. I can't really increase the volume of the sound. I already looked in alsamixer and everything is maximized. With the same headphones in Windows, I can achieve great sound volume. Does someone know why the sound is too low? I started alsaconf and created a new configuration. After that run aumix. Now I have the volume I wanted.
I am running KDE 4.6 in Debian Testing. Is there a way to increase the sound (i.e. more than the standard 100%)? The current settings with my speakers seem a bit too quiet in some cases.
I found a way to do it in PulseAudio, but I don't think Debian's KDE build is compatible.
I used to have Windows on my laptop, until I got the blue screen, so I just installed ubuntu. Well everything was ALOT louder on Windows, and I was wondering if there was a way to increase the maximum volume. I have to turn the volume almost all the way up to watch a movie. On Windows 1/4 volume was plenty. I searched, but alot of the answers I saw were that it was hardware limitations, which cant be the case, since it was a ton louder on Windows
I have centos 5 virtual server running on ESXi (vsphere 4.1).i have to increase disk space. I increased the size of the virtual machine in Vcenter. But i allready have 4 primary partitions. when i run fdisk /dev/sda, i get this :
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 * 1 13 104391 83 Linux /dev/sda2 14 3916 31350847+ 8e Linux LVM /dev/sda3 3917 6527 20972857+ 83 Linux /dev/sda4 6528 13054 52428127+ 83 Linux
how to increase the volume of ogg and mp3 files using ffmpeg. Some of the podcasts that I listen to are not loud enough, and I have my media player set to the highest volume.
I converted all of my vinyl to flac format, but when I played them in mplayer, the volume was way lower than the mp3's that I downloaded. So, when I have them all in the playlist, I'll have my flac file at a good volume, then an mp3 comes on and blasts me. Is there a command line program that I can use where I can specify a new volume for the flac files? I wanted a command line program so that I can script this entire process. I do not want to sacrifice the quality of the songs that I encoded (at 96kHz).
I have just installed OS 11.3 onto a lenovo desktop / Thinkcentre that previously had vista installed on it. With Opensuse I am having trouble getting much sound volume. With Vista the volume was fine but with Opensuse I have PCM, Master running pretty much on full. This gives me a respectable volume but I think there should really be more left in the tank from what I have it at. Is there any way to increase the gain in Alsa? The sound device shows in KDE as HDA Intel (AD198x) using xine backend.
I just finished installing 10.10 on my pc. the problem is that i cant login to the desktop i enter the password, the login sound plays and im stuck looking at the wallpaper. nothing else. i tried logging in safe mode and it worked. how can i get it to work normally?

Anybody have a good way to set the volume level to about 25% during a Gnome login? I sometimes have it to 100% watching movies, then I shutdown. The next day, the login sound is so loud it makes the windows (and my brain) rattle!
I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on a Sony Vaio EC laptop. I am having problems with my volume being very low under Ubuntu, even if I turn all the options to full, I can barely hear it. This happens both through the built in speakers and through headphones. I know it is not a hardware problem since both work fine in Win7 dual boot. Also, this problem occurs both in Rhythmbox and chromium.
I had a problem with sound, but after googling and installing a couple of files, I finally got sound from ..... and in aqualung. However, still nothing from audacious or amarok. When I open them with a terminal, there are no error messages. In audacious, the visuals show that the song is playing...the volume is at 100%, but no sound. Same with amarok.
I have sound but my volume controls dont work on my asus laptop. If i goto system - pref - sounds it says its loading it and then it closes. Pulse audio says it cant connect. Ive also lost the volume control icon in the top right for some reason as well? The only thing ive done recent is install mp3 codecs. Now i half to manually reload the drivers for my volume to work after bootup.
my sound has been only turning on if i turn it up beyond about 10%. it didnt used to do this. This has been happening for quite a long time, i just now wanted to bring it to the forum.
I upgraded to Maverick things generally went well - but I noticed TWO sound controls and removed one - later after a reboot I no longer have any. It will appear once I click on System/Preferences/Sound, but otherwise it doesn't show up on the desktop bar. I checked under the Add to Panel feature but no luck - any ideas how to get it back?
I am using a Dell Inspiron Laptop 1464. I have Ubuntu 11.04 Installed, and every time I have the volume at MAX and especially when I'm listening to music that has like high bit-rate (342) or what ever, there is a glitch in the sound, it sounds like when a CD skips or when it is scratched. I tried installing all types of different mp3 encoders and still the same.
Also it is the same when I use Banshee or Rhythumbox.
I recently purchased an external USB audio card [URL] All worked fine except the volume that comes out is BLASTING, and changing the master volume does nothing. Individual applications let me change their volume, but this is extremely anoying and often leads to me accidently blasting the room.
I bought a Toshiba Nb205 laptop with a Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02) inside. After I first got it I installed Ubuntu onto it, and that's where the problems started. After everything was installed I noticed that my sound doesn't work. So I looked everywhere. I tried so many solutions offered on these forums including messing around with Alsamixer and nothing seemed to be working. Then one day I luckily stumbled upon this website that directed me here: [URL] So I went there and picked the Linux 2.6(X86)(DEB) from the drop down list and installed it. I rebooted my machine, and I now had sound.
However, the only problem is that I can't control the volume of the sound. When I play something, it stays at one volume and one volume only. Nothing on sound preferences will work. The only way I can raise or lower the volume is if I do it in the application that I run, like if I am playing a ..... video, I have to use their volume control to control the volume. My master volume won't work at all.
I had problems getting sound working on a new install of 9.10, and eventually got it working by going to gnome alsa mixer and increasing Master F which was near 0%.Sound works now, but the fn+F10/F11 (volume up/down) keyboard shortcuts which show volume increasing and decreasing in sound preferences have no effect on the volume. How can I get these shortcuts working again?
Since doing an upgrade from Koala to Lynx, my volume control (up in the top right corner of the screen) has vanished. I can still mute and control volume by going into the Sound menu in Preferences, but I really miss having it on the taskbar.
This is my third Ubuntu installation, and even with identical hardware, sound volume is dramatically less than under Windows. I turn every slider up all the way, and it is still less than half as loud as Windows.
When the opening little music plays during start up, the first half of it is loud, but halfway through, the sound cuts to about half volume. Everything else afterwards is also very quiet. After boosting the volume output to 150%, and boosting VLC's audio output to 200%, the audio is still barely audible on my laptop. I've gone into alsamixer, and it's at max. I once found how to reset the audio card, and the sound was normal again, but only until I shut the laptop off, and next time, it was the same as always.
I'm on Ubuntu 9.10, and using an old Toshiba Satellite laptop. Don't know what my sound card is.
I just recently installed ubuntu so I'm quite lost on some stuff. This little annoyance comes from the volume levels in Ubuntu 10.04. I have partitioned my computer to have dual boot into windows and ubuntu, so I know the problems are not related to the hardware itself as everything works just fine in windows. I am using a Dell Inspiron 9400, for reference.
The multimedia keys on the computer respond correctly but on the lower three volume settings sound completely drops out as if I had muted the computer. I went into the Alsa mixer to see if I could configure these sound levels and sure enough the master volume was down to zero, PCM and LFE are also low . I changed the settings of the lower levels but when I press on the volume up or down media keys to switch level the settings get reset. I tried just changing one level, exiting and saving through alsactl but it didn't stick. Even after reboot the settings are back to the zero volume on the first levels.
the sound preferences menu, the one that's achieved by system>preferences>sound is completely gone, and so is the volume control that amarok/rhythmnbox connect too, that has that shortcut link to the sound preferences?
Since a few days my audio volume adjusts itself while listening music (rythmbox) or watching a movie (vlc). Anyone else have these problems? It's really really annoying.
My system:
Ubuntu 10.04, 64 bit on intel i5 sound card: VIA VT1828S (onboard Asus P7P55D-E mainboard)
am a web designer trying to go into using Linux. I just installed Ubuntu 11.4. Now I cannot get any sound. I checked the volume at the top right and it is not muted
