Ubuntu :: Icons Changing On Their Own After Installing Compiz?
Jan 3, 2011
I'm using an Acer Aspire One with ubuntu 10.10 Desktop/Netbook and Kubuntu 10.10 installed.I'm using Compiz for the window manager and Emerald for the decorator. I know my problem has something to do with compiz because after uninstalling it, the problem went away, so I'm hoping I'm just missing a setting somewhere. After installing compiz, my icons/system theme (not my window decorations) will change on their own,(Please see attached screenshots) and even when I choose, let's say, 'ambiance' in the appearance menu, the panels for gnome will change, but the icons will not. the only way i can get the ubuntu mono-dark icons to reappear is to logout/restart, etc. However, it will still switch to unity icons on a seemingly random basis. It is a little thing, but it is driving me crazy

I've recently downloaded experience icons theme and installed it. But now when I choose it from appearance windows, some icons like folders or local hard drives are not changing. this problem is the same with other icon themes. when I run check_svgs it shows something like this, which looks like something is wrong:
Code:
"./gnome-spinner/apps/gnome-spinner-rest.svg" is broken:
/usr/share/icons/eXperience/check_svgs: 23: rsvg: not found
------------
"./gnome-spinner/apps/gnome-spinner.svg" is broken:

im wondering if there is a way of excluiding icons and text from the transparency of the panel with compiz config settings manager (opacity, brightness and saturation) using (class=Gnome-panel) & !(type=Menu | PopupMenu | Dialog | Dropdownmenu |)or if there is another way to make the panel semi transparent but without making icons and text in it transparent.

I've been trying to change some of the icons in my system. I first tried the GUI. This changed the icon in the start menu, on the panel, and on the desktop, but it doesn't change the icon in the left-hand corner of open windows or in the task bar in the panel. I then went in and did it manually by editing the .desktop files in /usr/share/applications. Same thing...the icons in Openbox windows are the old ones. My guess is that Openbox is looking elsewhere for icons, but I dont really know.

how do you do it? I only manage to change Icons for applications that are "pinned" to the destkop. When I go to the root folder, all I get are Songbird icons for all applications. So I changed the Firefox and Dolphin icon on the panel. Now, when I open Dolhpin, the new icon appears on the panel next to the name of the open location. But when I go to the kmenu, it still has the old icon. When I open Firefox, the open windows on the panel still has the standard firefox logo.

I am running Xubuntu 11.04 on a new laptop and so far I am really loving it. However, when I connect my monitor to the laptop and when Xubuntu detects it to change the resolution, the icons rearrange themselves, reminding me of what Windows would do.
Is there a way to save and restore the icon layout so that they can remain on the same place on the desktop regardless of its resolution?

For some reason my desktop icons have decided to be very small and can't be changed (systemsettings/appearances/icons/advanced) It happened after I enabled and downloaded the files need for compiz. I have disabled compiz and now have no 3D desktop effects, but still cannot alter the desktop icon size. What have I done?

I want to give some of my directories special folder icons. For example, I have a Projects directory and I noticed that there is a special 'projects' directory icon available in my icon theme; I think that it would be nice to use that icon instead of the default directory icon.Google informs me that the file ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs can be edited to give certain directories special properties, including special icons. However, all my changes to the file get reverted after restarting my computer. Is there a way to make changes to user-dirs.dirs permanent?

I had to make for work a collectd based network monitoring system which displays data for each server in a fullscreen conky on different compiz viewports. I have to switch viewports automatically when the machine isn't operated (sorta screensaver) and also if i had to call attention in the case something bad happens, autoswitching should stop and the relevant viewport be showed up.This requires an interface to talk dynamically to the WM, which i've implemented in bash with support of the widely available "wmctrl" program.

this error:impossibile salvare le proprieta' , non hai accesso sufficiente per scrivere su /dati/eros/.directory tha in english is something like this: impossoble save properties, you havent enough permission access to write on /dati/eros/.directory this happen also as superuser I remember that with suse 11.0 or 10.3 I was able to change icons on fat32 partitions, now with 11.3 I cannot, there ought to be a way to do what I did with the previous version with this 11.3 brand new ad more advanced version shouldn't it?

I backed everything up and did a complete re-install of the system to 10.10. I had a widget layer with compiz before I did this and now it is not even an option in the preferences. Am I missing something?
I was running 10.10 before as well and it was there.

I was using the open source ATI drivers and KDE's compositing worked, so I hadn't installed compiz. I wanted to try fglrx because I thought a) I might be able to get temperature readings, and b) it might stop Kubuntu from making my computer incredibly hot (in Windows 7 it stays cool). So I installed fglrx by enabling it in the restricted hardware drivers thing, and things worked, but compositing was disabled and no matter what I did I couldn't enable it. So I installed compiz. When I run compiz, I get the following output:
Code:
toby@tensile:~$ compiz --replace
Starting kde4-window-decorator

I've used Ubuntu, but haven't done anything fancy with it. I installed OpenSUSE 11.1 on an old Gateway Solo 1450. It works great in Failsafe mode. When I try a normal boot, I get my background with a beautiful resolution, one or two of the icons in the lower right corner appear and that's it. Nothing else shows up on the screen!
These are my machine's specs:
1.2 Ghz. Celeron CPU
128 Kb. cache
256 MB RAM PC-133 (why I went with an older version of OpenSUSE)
10 Gb. Hard Disk
Intel 830-MG chipset
Phoenix Bios
Intel 4X AGP Graphics core

I can solve this by doing
gtk-window-manager --replace
but I have to do this every log in.

I was installing compiz on my machine and towards the end of installation i got an error saying:
dpkg:error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/udev-151-3-i386.deb
The program returned valude 1 or something towards that direction. I rebooted my X server however i got an error saying X server encountered a problem. I did apt-get install compiz and found out that many dependencies were missing so i tried apt-get -f install but i got the same error message at the end of the day. Im currently booted on windows XP.

Today I found out how to change theme in OpenSuse 11.3 64 bit. I'm running KDE 4.4. Naturally I went to KDE-Look.org and trawled it through for eye-candy. I got this HAL-9000 boot splash: HAL-9000 KDE-Look.org
Its a .gz file and uncompressed its called .xpm, I think its just an image, that I should put somewhere, but I don't know where. I tried the bootloader settings through yast, though it didn't tell me anything.
Secondly I got a screensaver, which I'm supposed to compile and install: KCometen4 KDE-Look.org
I tried following these instructions, as best as I could:
Code:
KCometen4 also comes with a simple configure script that should work for a generic local install. If it doesn't suit your needs, you will need to edit the cmake settings by hand.
Quick installation steps:
Cmake's equivalent to 'make distclean' is 'rm -rf build'.
If you do a local installation, you might not see KCometen4 in the Screen Saver Settings module. In that case, you will need to do one of two things.
First, you can set the $KDEDIRS environment variable in your X session startup script so it includes your local installation prefix:
Or second, you can set this for all users by adding your local installation prefix to /etc/kde4rc:
After that, you may need to manually refresh the system configuration cache by running 'kbuildsycoca4'. KCometen4 should now appear in Screen Saver Settings.
So I installed kdebase-workspace-devel but I couldn't find libqt-opengl-dev, but it didn't seem to be a problem, according to the console output:
Code:
It mentions some Q_WS_WIN, Q_WS_QWS and Q_WS_MAC, that it doesn't find. Could that be the problem.
I tried to see if the new screensaver got into the screensaver menu, it didn't.

I am trying to write a bash script that installs a program fully automated for me. I am stuck at the one part where i need to change a line in one config file. I have tried various syntax for sed and none have worked. Maybe someone can suggest how to go about this. Since the line appears in the middle of the file, I can't use echo or cat. Also the file will be diffrent lengths depending on the install.
The line I need changed is:
I need that changed to:
the last syntax i tried is:
Yes this is for PNP4Nagios on centos 5.6 64bit. If i can get this figured out. I will be willing to post the whole thing for others to use. it will be used to install PNP after a working nagios install is done.
