Ubuntu :: How To Run Program As Root
Jul 6, 2011
In 11.04 natty, I can't find a way to run a program with Administrator privileges.Specifically, I'm trying to configure sbackup by using the Simple Backup Configuration frontend. I always used to run this manually, set my backup schedules, and then let the program carry out backups in the background. In the new version, the scheduling options are greyed out unless you're logged in as Admin.
I've asked the question in the sbackup forum (no answer so far!) but in general terms, how do I run an application with Administrator/root privileges?

I have been trying to run the program unrevoked so that I can flash and root my phone. I want to do this on Linux, but this requires me to run the program as root and I don't know how to do this. I looked it up online and it told me to simply type sudo reflash or gksudo reflash and I tried both, sudo says it can't find the program and gksudo does something then nothing appears to happen.

my system has an autologin as root defined by custom.conf which is located in /etc/gdm : Code: [daemon]
TimedLoginEnable=false
AutomaticLoginEnalbe=true
TimedLogin=root
AutomaticLogin=root
TimedLoginDelay=30
And I would like to have the program "expfit_spifunc2" executed after the auto login. So, I have added "xterm_expfit.desktop" inside of /root/.config/autostart
"xterm_expfit.desktop" code:
Code: [Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Version=0.9.4
Type=Application
Name=xterm_expfit
code....

Example: In rc2.d I have S99test. In it: Code: #!/bin/sh mplayer -playlist "/music/Thom Yorke - The Eraser" Reboot; hear the loveliness; press pause (lirc setup)...still loveliness.
Login as root; "pkill mplay";hear nothing; "/etc/rc2.d/S99test"; more loveliness; press pause...silence! I know that i the former case, mplayer is assigned (for lack of a proper term) to a session, e.g. tty1. Not so in the latter. But why should a program like mplayer not receive (or ignore?) input from lircd, simply because it doesn't have a session? And how can I get mplayer (or any program run from boot scripts) to work with other programs (like lircd)?

I have ubuntu 11.04 installed along side windows. And I often share files with windows computers. If I am installing a new package from ubuntu software center, and consquently I have to log in as root to do so, which means I have given the system 'privileges' as the program is being installed, I decide to go open mozilla, and surf suspicious sites on the net. Is it possible in that case for me to get a virus?
When we enter the password for the root user in order to run one program such as ubuntu software center, does that mean that all programs have root privileges for the time being (as the software center is installing the program)?

I have a couple of encrypted external hard drives that I have to mount with realcrypt.The thing is, to start realcrypt I always need to put in my root password, which is kind of a drag.I have combed the internet for information and the most sensible solutions always pointed to do a visudo edit.There were a few things I tried, but none of them seem to work.This is the last iteration - I put in all realcrypt files i could find, which I suppose shouldn't be necessary but desperate times call for desperate measures, right?

is it possible to do so? I mean, I want every user to be able to run '/bin/x' for example, as root without entering a password. I know the security risks, but I'm trying this in a risk-free environment which security does not matter very much.

I can't get a program (wbar) to run directly from my user account, it fails saying "Image not found -> maybe using a relative path?". But if I run su -c "wbar", it shows up and manages to load the image. I think it has something to do with ImLib2 or whatever loads the image. I checked permissions on libImlib2.so.1 and it's world-readable and executable. Can libImlib2.a be causing this problem, set to 644? What else should I be checking?

I'm not a Linux noob, but I am far from guru. I'm running a single board computer with a slightly customized Debian Etch (customized by the SBC vendor). No Gnome/KDE/X installed. My application is a control application which uses SDL (Simple DirectMedia Layer) to paint some basic graphics on the VGA. I need to run it as root because the application calls iopl() to access an IO port.If I run my application manually from the command line, life is sweet. From Googling around, I found http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/28, and hence I:1) Created a script in /etc/init.d2) Executed "update-rc.d scriptName defaults" to link the script into the boot sequenceAll very straightforward. My application starts at boot. But when I try to SSH/SFTP into the SBC, I get "Connection refused". So I can't manage the SBC anymore, and this is a big problem. I am not sure if it's relevant, but my application starts before the SSH daemon.My script looked like:
case "$1" in
start)
echo "Starting my application"
[code]...

I was wondering whether there is an inbuilt logging system in UNIX?
I ran and installation and the program opened up automatically but I can't find the program executable.
If I could find a log then I could locate this file.

An old machine in our office, running Ubuntu 6.06 all of a sudden will not boot up. I get the following info during boot:
Uncompressing Linux... Ok Booting the kernel
mount: Mounting /root/sda1 /root failed: No such device
mount: Mounting /root/dev on /dev/.static/dev failed: No such file or directory
[code]....
I haven't changed anything on the system as far as I'm aware, and I ran some HD diagnostics and everything seems fine. however when I try to mount the drive with the following command:
sudo mount -t ext3 -o rw /dev/hda1 /mnt
I get the following error:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad
superblock on /dev/sda1, missing code
page or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in
syslog - try dmesg | tail or so
I ran fdisk -l and it says the partition type is Linux. The output after running dmesg | tail :
[12207.483801] init_special_inode: bogus i_mode (101)
[12207.483809] EXT2-fs: corrupt root inode, run e2fsck
[12260.427078] init_special_inode: bogus i_mode (101)
[code]...
Update: After running e2fsck -p /dev/sda1, I get the following info:
/dev/sda1: clean, 142449 / 9584640 files, 5402711 / 19161520 blocks

I no longer have access to my root desktop. On a session I attempted to change the root username but i apparently assigned it a wrong directory that does not exist. When I rebooted with my new root username, i was instead recognised as a simple user (no root privileges). I tried the console to change to "old" root but root password is not accepted and there is no way to access to sudoer files. it seems that inserting a new username requires root privileges and i am back to square one. Simply logging with old root username and password after restart gives me a blank screen with nothing on it and cannot even reboot.

want to run VirtualBox with root permissions. Trouble is that only when run as root i can access attached USB devices inside of a virtual machine, otherwise, these a greyed out).Now running VirtualBox as a root user also changes the configuration folders, making all my virtual machines already defined disappear. I also don't want to copy all to the root configuration folders. Is there a way to give the VirtualBox root permissions but without actually running the application as a root user. Is it possible to do without changing the permissions of the non-root user, i.e. i don't want my user to have all root permissions, due to security considerations.
