General :: Create An Ext2 Partition From Command Line Which Is Writable From Every User

Nov 3, 2009

I work with a Debian Squeeze on my laptop and I have a 160GB external hard disk. My hard disk was formatted FAT32, but I decided to format it using ext2. I formatted it using fdisk from command line and everything went well. Unfortunately, when I mount my hard drive(which is auto-mounted from Debian) it has got root both as owner and group. Then I can't write to it because I have no permission to do that. Is there a setting to create an ext2 partition which has as owner the logged system user in order to have right permission every time.

I looked it up online and it told me to simply type sudo reflash or gksudo reflash and I tried both, sudo says it can't find the program and gksudo does something then nothing appears to happen.

Applications :: Program Works As Root But Fails As User

Jan 21, 2010

I can't get a program (wbar) to run directly from my user account, it fails saying "Image not found -> maybe using a relative path?". But if I run su -c "wbar", it shows up and manages to load the image. I think it has something to do with ImLib2 or whatever loads the image. I checked permissions on libImlib2.so.1 and it's world-readable and executable. Can libImlib2.a be causing this problem, set to 644? What else should I be checking?

General :: Change The Root Directory For A User?

Oct 5, 2010

For a user on a Linux host, I need to make everything inaccessible besides his home directory. I have heard that this is usually done by changing the root directory for the user (and setting it to the user's home directory), however I couldn't find the way to do it.

I thought about the chroot command, but it seems it just runs the specified command, considering the specified directory as the root directory. So it seems chroot is not what i need. So my question is: what is the command which changes the user's root directory?

I have created a user, created a group, added the user to the group, but still cannot access /var/lib/mysql/mysql directory as that user. I would like that user to have +rx access only.
