View 5 RepliesIs there a way to get rid of the floppy entry in the Places? This is not the bookmarks area (which is below) so I can't just right-click and remove or remove it from Bookmarks spot. I already tried commenting the floppy in fstab and then removed the entire line to no avail. Floppy drive is disabled in the Bios, I haven't had a floppy drive in 10+ years.
View 9 Replies View RelatedIs there something weird about the FLOPPY DRIVE on F12? Nothing associated with it works & I can't get an icon for it. Also the FLOPPY FORMATTER no longer works. (mine is an internal drive)- I had some really miner quirks with it in 10 but it worked. I had some workaround launchers that I used until an upgrade semi-fixed it. (It would give a false error that it couldn't run but did. I just ignored it.)
I tried to edit FSTAB to cure a problem of my BACKUP drive showing up twice*** so while I was in there I added the stuff for the floppy & it still doesn't work. If I try to mount it manually, I get the error that /dev/fd0 doesn't exist.I tried to find some info on it & it SEEMS that there MAY be a bug but I'm not sure as the info is a bit confusing as to just what version & such they are talking about. And there was also the problem that all the stuff seemed to be OLD or not related to my problem.I why I quite hacking at my system, is that all my workaround launchers & the formatter say that there are GNOME things missing & they can't run. So I figure that there is something missing or screwy already & that I'd better ask BEFORE I make things worse or actually break something. With the fact that floppies are about gone, it's getting to be not that big of a deal but I still find myself having to use them for repair purposes (albeit, not as much) & it gets to be a bit of a pain to fire up M$ just to do something like this.
*** It appears that the one in FSTAB was the one I needed, so where would the OTHER one be so I can get rid of it? Or at least make it auto mount.
I am trying to write a floppy boot image to my floppy drive (as root):
Code:
dd if=boot.img of=/dev/fd0
dd: opening `/dev/fd0': Read-only file system
[code]....
I am having a Promise TX4650 RAID controller & trying to create a driver floppy for installing the drivers. Also am using RHEL 5, I can create the driver floppy, but when I type "mount /dev/fd0 /media/floppy" I get error: "mount: mount point /media/floppy does not exist".Can I get the files in a format other than the ext2 floppy image, so that we do not need to use a floppy drive? There is a readme file inside the driver archive & you can use that as a reference.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have inserted a module with modprobe. However it seems to have problem.
1- How can I remove the module from modprobe?
2- If I reboot and the kernel can not boot up because of this faulty module, how can I remove it?
I am a newbie and I am compiling a kernel in order to reduce the bootup time. I have a question as follows.
I am trying to remove a module. I used rmmod and modprobe. I can remove the module, but it is loaded again after reboot. How can I remove a module permanently? The module that I am trying to remove is lp.
I'm trying to remove 3Dlabs / Oxygen gmx , and install vesa - Generic VESA-compliant video driver module. How do I remove 3Dlabs / Oxygen gmx ?I can click on VESA in the 'Choose By Name...' , but when I close that box, it shows No Driver.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI got this problem where my USB ports don't work. So if I do the command:
modprobe -r ehci_hcd
it fixes it. I can put it in the /etc/rc.local so that it runs every time when the server reboots. But, I want the ehci module removed without ever being loaded because sometimes the server goes through an fsck and the module is loaded and therefore I cannot use my IPMI to access the server.
I believe that my kernel has it within it because blacklisting the module does not work. I've tried remaking the initrd with this:
add module to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
mkinitrd -f /boot/initrd-$(uname-r).img $(uname -r)
and that didn't work. I've searched on how to do it but nothing is really clear. I would like to know what the command would be to do this. I use Fedora 8.
I would like the ehci_hcd module to not be loaded so that if the server goes through an fsck, the module is still not loaded.
By default my "Places " menu contains some entries like
- Floppy menu
- Desktop
- Computer
How can I get (permanently) rid of these entries ? How can I rename "Home Folder" to "Home" ?
I'm trying to enable the rewrite module in apache, to enabled the module I followed the last entry in the fist page this thread:[URL]...When I restart the apache all works fine, so I supose it's enabled
Now I create .htaccess in my apache folder (/home/user/apache), and I write this:
Code:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^link([^/]*).html$ test.php?link=$1 [L]
And I try to execute this: ./.htaccess, I have this mistakes:

What are I doing wrong?

i installed firefox 4 and removed the old 3.X version. did a general update that my computer showed me was available then i noticed the first problem. firefox 4 would not launch when i clicked it, it would only launch when i clicked the gnome 3 applications button and then clicked and dragged the firefox logo to the desktop, then it opened. the second problem i am now having which at the moment is more bothersome is that after i closed the lid to my laptop and opened it up again after a while and logged back in and noticed that the ENTIRE gnome 3 environment was gone. no panel no menu nothing just the desktop and a few desktop icons. i tried the command "yum install gnome-shell" but it just sed that gnome 2.31.5-7 .fc14.i686 was already installed so it wasnt gonna do anything, then i tried the "gnome-shell --replace" command and it just said
failed to load "canberra-gtk-module": libcanberra-gtk-module no such file or directory.
I've installed openSuse 11.4 server-mode (text only) on my desktop, and I'm trying to configure IceWM so i'll eventually have it set up so it always boots into text only mode, but I could be able to quickly start icewm via the command line.using Yast, I installed the Xorg server, and icewm.when I type X, the screen goes black and it just doesn't seem to do anythingI found if I hit ctrl+alt+f1 it kinda puts me back into text only mode, but I can't put in commands anymore. The last thing it says on the screen is:
Failed to load module "fglrx" (module does not exist, 0)
I've goggled that error message and the discussions that popped up around it made no sense to me at all. I've never configured X from scratch before, can someone point me towards a tutorial or something?
I cannot find the Xorg configuration file on my newly installed Debian on my tablet-pc, so I followed this tutorial [URL] and ran the command "Xorg -configure", to which I got the following error messages:

(EE) vmware: Please ignore the above warnings about not being able to load module/driver vmwgfx

When opening gedit as a user I get the following message
Gkt-message: Failed to load module "'pk-gtk-module"
If I try to open gedit as root I get the same message but with other messages. These are shown in the attached file. gtk.txt
This is on an upgraded machine using the preupgrade method. The same has happened on two machines upgraded from F14 to F15 the same way. 64 bit systems.
How to clean this up so the messages do no appear?

I tried to access my USB Floppy yesterday, I plugged it in, I could see it under Places/Computer, but I can not open the floppy, it just doesn't open, it's there, I right click to see what are my options, whether or not I can mount it but surprisingly there was no mount option in the menu, I tried to mount it manually from terminal, but nothing happens, which is very odd. I never had this problem using my Floppy drive back with other versions of Ubuntu. what should I do? How can I solve it to enjoy again using my Floppy drive?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a floppy I could read in 7.1. I just installed 10.04 and cannot read the disk. In the home places panel, it recognizes the floppy but when I put the curser on it, it says "mount and read disk". When I left click, nothing happens. When I right click, menu options include "open" and "identify media" When I click on these, nothing happens. I have "fdutils" installed. Best I can tell, that is the only floppy software installed.
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy computer doesn't support booting from a cd or a usb stick. I managed to install ubuntu (10.04) by using the utility program that came with the live cd. With it I was able to boot from cd and use the live cd., there still seems to be some leftover files of windows in the hard drive where I installed ubuntu. So my question is, how can I reinstall ubuntu so that it will format the whole drive. Is there perhaps a similar utility program for ubuntu that lets me boot from a live cd or can I do the reinstallation just using the already installed ubuntu?
