Ubuntu :: How To Make Sure Something Will Run In Wine
Sep 1, 2011
So I have a windows game that I would like to run in wine. There are lots of dlls and exes and inis and various .bin files. My question is, which files should be "allowed to execute as program" and which shouldn't? When I allow or deny execution, I get different results when I start the game. I realize that if there is a .bin file, flipping any bit, be it the executable one or not, is not a good thing. Also, should dlls be allowed to run?

I recently installed an image editor that I am fond of via Wine. It works fine but now I want to make it the default program when I open an image. I know for most programs how to change this but when I installed this via Wine it is not listed as one of my options for other programs to open that type of file. How do I change the default program to open a file when it's not listed?

I having some trouble with Wine. I tried running the 'make uninstall' command, but:
Code:
make[1]: Entering directory `/home/brandon/wine-1.3.19/tools'
make[1]: `makedep' is up to date.
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/brandon/wine-1.3.19/tools'
make[1]: Entering directory `/home/brandon/wine-1.3.19/dlls/acledit'
cd /usr/local/lib/wine && rm -f acledit.dll.so
rm: cannot remove `acledit.dll.so': Permission denied
make[1]: [uninstall] Error 1 (ignored)
rm -f /usr/local/lib/wine/fakedlls/acledit.dll
rm: cannot remove `/usr/local/lib/wine/fakedlls/acledit.dll': Permission denied
make[1]: *** [uninstall] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/brandon/wine-1.3.19/dlls/acledit'
make: *** [uninstall] Error 2
I can't remove through terminal, and I can't remove it manually. I tried just removing everything through winetricks, then removing everything through synaptic, but whenever I install from software center, I'm back to wine 1.3.19.

The question I have is, can iTunes ever work in Linux? I've tried installing it using WINE but to no avail. Is there a way to make WINE shut up with the errors and let it install? I've tried using the terminal.

I'm a beginner to Ubuntu so this is probably an easy question, but: I installed a windows application using Wine and that worked, it launched the application just fine. But now after restarting the computer I can't see how to run that application again. It would be nice to make a desktop icon for it.

I'm running WoW in Ubuntu 9.10 with wine. My screen's native resolution is 1920x1200. When I play WoW in Windows I set it to 1920x1080 in fullscreen because that aspect ratio allows me to see more of the playing field. In windows it doesn't stretch the screen so I have a black bar at the top and bottom of my screen.
When I set it to 1920x1080 under wine, it stretches my screen. Is there any way I can make it not stretch?
I tried searching forums/google but I couldn't find anything related to my question.

Well, I've been trying to get a program called SRS Audio Sandbox to work under Wine, but since it works with the audio output, it requires an audio driver and looks for the Windows one instead of the Linux one. Any way to emulateimitate that driver so it'll work?

while trying to get a game to work on wine I was surprised to find out that the wine version that ships with sid is 1.0.1 released in October 2005. So I installed the latest release I found at [URL] like this :
dpkg -i wine_1.1.42~winehq1-1_amd64.deb
The install failed, I think because I hadn't remove the old wine version, and that's when the joy-ride started. Impossible to remove wine to restart properly. (apt-get remove libwine wine and apt-get -f install didn't) After some googling I tried this :
dpkg -i --force-depends wine_1.1.42~winehq1-1_amd64.deb
This did install the wine version I wanted, and the game ran fine after that. However the result was a borked apt-get. Tried to remove wine again with the above commands, resulting in apt-get failing to do so because it tried installing wine-unstable and reported errors similar to these : E: Could not perform immediate configuration on 'wine-unstable'. see man 5 apt.conf under APT::Immediate-Configure for details. So why not take a virtualbox wich runs wine to start the old Software?

Lot of questions about WINE... When I'm done I'm going to make a HOWTO so that others can do what I did It's hard work, but I'm nearly done.The last problem I'm having is the WINE menu on GNOME won't show up after a install of WINE from a .deb package (it usually does). This was after I compiled WINE from source and removed it with "make uninstall" and "rm -rf /.wine".So now I installed the WINE from a deb package and the Wine menu entry is not showing up.I've tried re-installing Wine and rebooting my PC but nothing seems to work.

I have a problem running a game on a fresh Slackware64 install.
Slack version is 13.37
I've followed alien bobs instructions for a multilib environment from here:[url]
And then used sbopkg to download and compile wine version 1.2.2, which went through just fine.
After that I grabbed cabextract from sbopkg and ran this: wget [url] sh winetricks d3dx9 To get the DX9.
But, when I try to run the game, this is the error I get:
Code:
The game it self ran perfectly on the 32 bit version of Slackware, tested with 13.0. So now I think I'm missing some libs or something, but I have no clue which.

I don't know if it's just my system, but after applying the latest Wine update, the mouse cursor in Wine windows is now purple/magenta/pink, whatever. Not a big problem, just annoying. I've looked through the various config files in ~home and /usr/share/wine, and can't find any parameter that might even remotely address this.

I am new to fedora and installed wine to see if I could get the sony reader software working (required to access sony bookstore from my sony ereader). Well the program did not work though it did create icons on my desktop. wine kept crashing and I said lets just get rid of it. I uninstalled wine via yum remove and nothing appeared to happen so I did rpm -qa |grep wine and saw lots of stuff. So I simply did yum remove wine* and then a rpm -qa |grep wine was empty. however wine is still under applications on my desktop and still has a category for programs--reader. I should also mention that while wine was installed I attempted to remove the reader via the wine uninstalller but a) wine gave a message of a core crash and b) all the uninstaller did was give me the option to reinstall the reader program. so now when I attempt to open an epub it tries with the sony reader software. I know I can just right click to use another program but for now I want wine gone completely from my pc and the sony program gone.

he clicks on everything on his GNOME desktop, and manages to delete everything, including menus, icons, etc. The people he lives with aren't skilled enough to fix it, and I live a good eight hours away. I have remote capabilities with NX, but that requires them to initiate a connection to my workstation here, which is more painful than I thought it would be. I need a way of locking down the desktop, so it's read-only, so he can't make the changes he seems to keep making. I figure I could make the .gnome directory read-only, but I don't know if that would affect the normal operation.

I need to modify fs/open.c and fs/read_write.c to make my modifications. I cannot find any options in 'make menuconfig' to make these files modules rather than compiled elements. I'm thinking these cannot be modules because the file system won't work without open.c and read_write.c. Is this correct - I cannot compile fs/open.c and fs/read_write.c as modules, only as compiled elements? Or, is there some way for a module to overwrite these routines when the module is installed and re-enable the routines when the module is removed?

I build and use a custom kernel, and use the nvidia driver. This is on debian stretch.
By default, I build the image and headers packages with this line:
CONCURRENCY_LEVEL=8 nice -n19 ionice -c3 fakeroot make-kpkg --initrd --append-to-version=-something --revision=1 kernel_image kernel_headers
These kernel sources are usually the sources from debian, with a couple of more patches that I add. It appears that for nvidia-driver package versions higher than 352.79-1, the kernel headers/sources need to be prepared with 'make prepare' and 'make prepare scripts'. It's that simple. I concluded this after the nvidia dkms build failed on my custom kernel, but then succeeded after I pointed it to the full sources, but only after running 'make prepare' and 'make prepare scripts' on them. The problem is that this make-kpkg scheme doesn't appear to do this, or if it does, it doesn't properly include in the headers everything that it should.

Quote:
- Using pkgtools: ----------------
To install:
$ make pkg
$ installpkg ./pkg/slapt-get-${VERSION}-${ARCH}-${RELEASE}.tgz
When I try make pkg, I get:
Code:
root@darkstar:/home/rob# make pkg
make: *** No rule to make target `pkg'. Stop.
I guess that I do not understand the instructions?
