Ubuntu :: How To Keep Bookmarks Folder Open For Organizing
May 5, 2011
i have hundreds of saved websites in my bookmarks. i'm trying to organize them into folders (one for ..... videos, one for movies, one for news articles, and so on, and each of those folders has sub-categories as well). the problem is when i try to organize the contents of the folders in my bookmarks, my bookmarks closes whenever i drag website into a folder inside of a folder.
for example, i can save a website and drag it to my "videos" folder in bookmarks no problem. the problem is, when i save a website and drag it to a folder inside of a folder (bookmarks -> videos -> music videos -> rock) the bookmarks closes. it's a real nuisance because it's making it take a really long time to organize my bookmarks. how can i keep bookmarks from closing whenever i drag a website into a folder inside of a folder.

I just reinstalled my Firefox after a extension problem. Now it will not open my bookmark file I exported before the reinstall. It just goes to the folder above it, which is Ubuntu One. When I go back and try again, it freezes and makes it that I have to close the window and pull it back up again. How can I do this without issues?

when i used windows there was this wonderful editor named Notepad++.it was perfect(it still is) some of its best and useful features of it (for me) was:
1-open all files in a folder when drag and drop the folder on it
2-search and replace a statement in all open files
3-have an extended mode which include special characters like
and so on.. i want to know if there is an editor with this feature in ubuntu?

I basically am hoping for a line of bash script I can put into "Open With" for folders so I can get a terminal with the right path. I hate manually typing in paths to places when I am looking right at them in nautilus. "gnome-terminal" doesn't work - it just opens a terminal to ~.

I'm looking for some software for my OpenSUSE, which with I would be able to organize my audio files.
I've found one, which may be good, but it's unable to run without X server (in CLI).

I'm not looking for ID3 renamers. There're maybe hundreds of them... I'm looking for software, which has its own database, or is able to communicate with some database, like CDDB, Gracenote, last.fm etc.

I have an Ubuntu server installation set up as a media server with Subsonic in a medium sized office environment. I allow uploads from all employees to the media folder on the server. As you can imagine, it's going to get a bit messy in there with multiple spellings of artist and album names for directory names, duplicate files, and incorrect filenames and tags. I was hoping I could find a script that I could run daily as a cron job to clean up the media drive. I would like to maintain a path similar to: /mnt/music/Artist/Album/Song.file

My girlfriend just started on Fedora and she's a mess with her files. I was thinking on writing a mini-script that would put all her document files on ~/Documents, music on ~/Music, etc. I thought, maybe, there could be some software that cleans up the desktop for ya. If not, this could be a major app idea. Is there anything anybody knows of? Simple thing: putting your files on the right places.

Syslog is used to store simple log files or we can manage them too? Well, the thing is, that I need to run a software (like syslog) to collect my logs and put them in order and organize them so it makes them "understandable". I have been told that syslog can do the job and that it doesn't need a complex configuration to work.

I was messing around with Bash scripting just now and was wondering if there was a way to organize the output of a command into an array. Like the Bash equivalent of the PHP explode() function.

I work on machines with different architectures, all of which share the same home directory(what is the technical term for it -- network mounting ?). Since I don't have admin privileges on these systems, I have installed programs in /home/<my_id>/bin. A program compiled for one architecture doesn't work when I login into another system. I'm thinking of creating architecture specific directories which would contain inaries/libraries specific to that architecture and creating a softlink to it t /home/<my_id>/bin. The only problem with this solution is that I can't work on two systems at the same time.

I'd like to open a folder automatically after logging in. The folder is a samba shared folder but it shouldn't matter. I've tried launching nautilus as a "startup application", but then Ubuntu will enter some kind of loop and pop up lots of window saying "starting file manager". I am using Ubuntu 10.04.

I backed up a windows xp folder which was My documents to an ext4 formated external hard drive from an ubuntu 10.04 live cd. After installing Ubuntu 10.04 on that same computer, I tried to open the my document folder then i was denied access to it because i was the wrong user. In windows xp, the My documents folder was not password protected. Is there any way to hack that folder, I have a bunch of pictures in there that I want to retrieve. On the folder icon, it shows and x and a lock. I think it means that is either encrypted or password protected.

under 11.2/KDE 4.35 I'm not able to move through the directory tree, neither with dolphin nor with konqueror.
If I click on a folder, a plus or minus sign appear alternately, but the folder isn't opened.
If I double-click on the folder icon, nothing happens.
So under 11.2 I just can not access the files stored under a previously installed 11.1 in the home tree (i.e in a separate partition on that HD) !
Is my machine too slow ? Do I have hardware too old (Pentium III Katmai on an Intel mainboard with onboard graphics) ?

I have been unable to open my Downloads folder for 2 days now. I've tried everything. I can get into every other folder on my machine though. I also have 103GB free space on my machine. Is there perhaps a limit on the amount of data I can have per folder? I'm running 64bit Ubuntu.

I have upgrade with a complete success my laptop from 9.10 to 10.04. I have only a small annoying thing: the little open folder triangle icon in Nautilus is replaced with a big horrible (IMHO) plus button. I'm java developer and I use Eclipse intensive and it uses the same icon for open Eclipse inside folder/package and it's not comfortable for me. In which way I can replace the system plus button icon with the previous triangle button icon?

My laptop running on ubuntu has been having some issues and it's giving error reports on logging in. Because I want to retrieve my files above all else, I installed ubuntu to a usb-stick and booted it directly from there. I can asses /media/myharddrive/home and there's a folder called lennard, which is the user account on my laptop. I can't open it however, because I don't have the necessary permissions. I'm afraid I encrypted it with an option that was standard to ubuntu. I have a 23-digit code right in front of me but I'm not asked to enter it so I don't know what to do with it right now.

I have a folder owned by root, I can open it by changing the permissions but then I have to change them back when I'm done, I was wondering if there was a way to use the terminal to open the folder as root without changing the permission on the folder permanently? I am admin and have the sudo password if necessary.

Via empathy a friend sent me a windows folder containing jpg files. I suppose he just drag and dropped the folder into the messenger window in Win7 and sent it to me that way. I accepted and saved on the desktop. Empathy turned the folder into a .tar file. When I try to open the tar file I get the following error:
tar: This does not look like a tar archive
tar: Skipping to next header
tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors
Not surprising as it is indeed not a real tar archive. When I check to see which filetype it is with the file command it says -data. I've tried multiple versions of mount commands with various filetypes but I just can't seem to open this thing. How can I open this folder saved as .tar?
