View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using ubuntu server 9.10 for a home build NAS. Everything is working great just have one more thing to figure out. I have Samba set up to access my files and I set up a recycle feature so anything deleted will get moved to a Recycled folder. (I learned this the hard way after hitting delete key by accident while browsing the shares in windows. Lost 100 GB of data)
Now it is for the most part working but the permissions on folders isn't getting set right. If I delete a file in a share I can go to Recycle bin folder and delete the file for good. But if I delete a folder I can not access that folder to delete or restore from the Recycle bin folder. I have to chmod the folder before I can do anything with it. Anything I can change to get folders deleted via windows to have the right permissions when it is moved to the Recycle bin folder?

How to do it ? How to create folder rights that samba and ftp user will have an access (read/write/delete) to all directories in /fileserver.
My system is CentOS. I`m starting samba and vsftpd like a root (/etc/init.d/vsftpd start etc.)
when i used windows there was this wonderful editor named Notepad++.it was perfect(it still is) some of its best and useful features of it (for me) was:
1-open all files in a folder when drag and drop the folder on it
2-search and replace a statement in all open files
3-have an extended mode which include special characters like
and so on.. i want to know if there is an editor with this feature in ubuntu?
I basically am hoping for a line of bash script I can put into "Open With" for folders so I can get a terminal with the right path. I hate manually typing in paths to places when I am looking right at them in nautilus. "gnome-terminal" doesn't work - it just opens a terminal to ~.

View 14 Replies View Relatedi have an old desktop that i have decided to use as a central point for localhost/website files. I have 2 laptops, a ubuntu and vista, and i want them both to be able to see the public_html folder on my desktop, and be able to create/update folders and files.
I have set up the samba sharing and that's working fine, but when i create folders using my laptop, they are not writeable to the desktop or other laptop because my laptop is the creator. Is there a way that I can set it so that whenever folders/files are created from either laptop, they have full permissions?
I installed samba and set one of the folders on my desktop to share with my win7pc. However, I'm having some difficulty getting it to work. If anyone can provide some insight, I would be very grateful.
Both my ubuntu-pc and my win7-pc belong to the same workgroup. Each pc can ping the other. The ubuntu-pc can "see" that the win7 pc is part of the network; but it cannot communicate with the win7 pc. The Win7-pc does not show that the ubuntu-pc is part of the network.
that is we have many users and most users can go in most file and in that file there are few sub folders and only handful of the can enter that sub folder but I don't know to to do
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm having some trouble with the user's home folders in Samba, ubuntu clients.I have a Samba server (Ubuntu Server 9.10)nd a bunch of windows clients and ubuntu clients too.On windows clients, each usercan see his home folder without problems, and the other shared folders too of course.The problem appears in ubuntu (i'm using gnome desktop with nautilus and the plugin for I enter Places->Network->Windowsetwork->DOMAIN->SERVER I only see the public shared folders, but no the samba user's home folder.I tryied connecting to samba through Places->Connect to Server and entering the username (for previous auth just in case) but nothing happens...
If, in nautilus I write smb://server/username, once it asked me for my user and password (but I told the popup to keep the password forever so now it doesnt ask me anymore :S), but it keeps not showing the folder under SERVER, the only way to access it is through smb://server/username directly. Even username@server does not work.Mi auth type in the Samba server is "user", and the auth config at my ubuntu client is also userJust in case.. when I type smbclient -L //SERVER -U username, it shows me the home folder ok.
I have samba allowing only known users, and on the ubuntu side, I have the folder permission 777. I have the same exact samba smb.conf file(locations of course matching new server), but I can't get it to authenticate with the new server(Old server is up and running too) and I'm lost. I thought I had it figured out when I did my last server, but I seem to be missing something on this one.

I'm sure both username and password are exactly right. But I can not access the folder. I got ubuntu samba server on server 10.04 username:user1 , Home folder: /home/user1 This user connects from a macbook pro no problem. I followed the same steps to set up user2 username:user2 , Home folder: /home/user2 This user does not connect from windows vista. I have the correct ports open, 137-139 & 445, and can connect from the macintosh, but not vista. The error says that the username or password is in correct. If you need some log files or config files, just let me know where to go and they're all yours!

Mounting the decrypted folder on the server is done automatically on login using gnome-encfs. Exposing the folder locally works like a charm. Now where I get stuck is trying to access the samba share from a client (even with smbclient on the server itself). I can see the share with smbclient -L:

We want to fix our data folders structre in Samba, for example our folders would be like as Data/Group A/2010 /A.We want all our users can work only in folder A and no one can create any files in data, GroupA, 2010 folders. The file server is working well with the shares all working correctly except for one problem. I would like the users be able to manage the folder permissions from a windows PC. This can be done from a login as the root user if need be but, the key is that the system be manageable from the windows PC.
I have followed the instructions of multiple how to's but still get and error that access is denied when trying to apply permissions. I am able to search the server for users to add and the names resolve. What are the configurations that I should be looking at where the NT permissions in samba are configured. nt acl support is set to yes and any other acl settings used produce the same result.

I successfully installed Samba, but have problem with access to any shared folder on my secondary drive. If I try access secondary drive with admin user, everything is fine. If with another account try to access via samba to shared folder on partition with Ubuntu, everything is fine again. Every folder has set privileges to read&write to everyone, so shouldn't be problem here.
