Ubuntu :: How To Get 1024X768

I have successfully downloaded and installed the latest ubuntu, and I am trying to get 1024X768 screen resolution.
Hardware: K8M800 VIA Onboard video (I only get 800X600).
I am trying to edit my xorg.conf file.
When I open a terminal window, and put in:
sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak
It says that it does not see such a file. Do I need to change the directory? If so, how do I do it.
Also, if I put in this in the terminal window: gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf then the file is blank, and if I want to save, it says that such a file does not exit.

Well i have HP D2832. A very old CRT Monitor from HP which have resolutions supported upto 1300 one but i can't get the resolutions after 1024x768. I want to get 1152x864 and cannot work to get it show in Monitors Panel.
In monitors panel it shows: Monitor: Unknown.

I have recently upgraded my HTPC to 10.04. It has the Nvidia ION chipset connected to a older NEC PlasmaSync 4210w via D-sub.
The native res is, and needs to be 853x480. When on the 'auto' setting the NVIDIA x server configuration utility puts it at 1024x768 but gives me the mode option to display at 848x480 @60hz. This res looks better but I have black bars on the side of the screen because of those lost pixel columns.

I'm trying to use the Xubuntu-based BitDefender Rescue Disk, and having an issue. Posting in their forum didn't return anything, so I figured I should ask here next.
Using the default settings, the Rescue Disk starts in 800x600 and complains that the resolution is too low to run the app in graphic mode.
FYI, this servers + monitor run Windows just fine in 1024x768 @ 75Hz, and even higher.
I tried adding "screen=1024x768" to the command-line, to no avail.
FWIW, the default includes "vga=791" but I don't know what it means.
If someone had the same issue, how can I set the resolution to something higher so I can run BitDefender in graphic mode?

I can't change the video resolution for Intel 82740 (i740) video card.I'm new to Ubuntu 10.04, as I've just installed it and I have a problem with video settings.I can't change video resolution for my video adapter. I can only choose between 800x600, 640x480,400x300... not 1024x768 for example.No restricted or proprietary drivers...I used Knoppix 5.1.1 Live CD and it automatically set the resolution to 1024x768.I also used Puppy linux 5.1 Live CD and it had a configuration program which also utilised 1024x768.If these versions of linux can utilise the 1024x768 resolution, why can't Ubuntu 10.04

after the latest kernel update (2.6.32-26), my computer will no longer start up with a screen resolution higher than 800x600. Before this update, my computer would sometimes startup with this problem, but this could usually be fixed with a restart (or two if necessary). At this resolution the panels and a lot of tool-bars will not display properly, so I am limited as to what I can do using the GUI. my video card is an S3 unichrome (I think. It is built-in to the motherboard so I don't know for certain) my screen is an old ctr one I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on the 2.6.32-26 kernel.

I gave up on ubuntu few months ago and now I'm giving it one more chance since I am already sick of Vista. Okay, I researched all over google for specific problem and I think there are few possible problems such as not recognizing Monitor (Polaroid 1911-TLXB) or missing driver (Intel 82G33/G31). I have DELL Inspiron 530. Im stuck with 800x600. I did try SYSTEM>ADMINISTRATION>Hardware Drivers and it searched and found NOTHING.

I installed 10.04 on my former windows box last night, and I seem to be stuck at a screen resolution of 1024x768. I have a Geforce 7600 GT graphics card, and I installed current drivers via the hardware drivers option. I can't go above this resolution in the nvidia x-server settings, and even xrandr says the highest resolution I can use is 1024x768. What is up with that, and how can I change it?

I had an issue with cairo-dock, and tried to remove it via package manager.
Rebooted, and screen froze with:
usplash: Setting mode 1152x864 failedf-49e2-a581-20153703c306
usplash: Using mode 1024x768
When I alt-F2, I just get a flashing cursor, no ability to type...
I then tried recovery mode, it scrolls, then freezes at:
init: network-interface (wlan0) post-stop process (916) terminated with status 1 flashing cursor with no ability to type...
I also tried recovering my data (home) with ubuntu one, but only 2 icons in my home dir appeared..
last resort I pulled the drive and hooked it to a DriveWire and to an ubuntu 9.04 machine but could not access due to restrictions...freeze even...
well... using "try ubuntu" the 2 icons are as follows... Access-Your-Privite-Data.desktop and the 2nd is Readme.txt
Readme.txt contains:
THIS DIRECTORY HAS BEEN UNMOUNTED TO PROTECT YOUR DATA.
From the graphical desktop, click on: "Access your private data"
or
From the command line, run: ecryptfs-mount-private
cant find the first and error message when trying the second. This is done with an ubuntu one cd on the laptop... I can not access the files this way with laptop hard drive plugged into drivewire on an ubuntu desktop machine.

I have recently installed Ubuntu on my Toshiba Satellite A25-S207 Laptop. Everything runs great except that the resolution will not go above 800x600. I had this problem before on the same laptop and was able to fix it but cannot find the fix now (I had to wipe my laptop clean in order to remove some pesky Windows partitions and reinstall Ubuntu) I have found several "fixes" but none work. I tried the one below as well as it applies almost perfectly to my problem
"I just installed the latest ubuntu 10.04 on a Toshiba-Tecra having "Trident Microsystems Cyberblade XP4m32" Monitor. After install resolution is defaulted to 800x600. I followed a method advised in some threads (arount xrandr and cvt) to increase the size (my laptop works with 1024x768 under XP). This was done OK and I obtained the resolution 1024X768 appearing in the drop list resolution options of the Monitor preferences but when I select the option if fails. Alternatively, when I execute $ xrandr --output default --mode 1024x768_60.00 i got the message "xrandr : screen cannot be larger than 800x600 (desired size 1024X76
I also saw a possible fix proposing to add "HorizSync 31.50-48.00" in Xorg.conf but I then I DO NOT have such a file in my /etc/x11/ after ubuntu install (supposing that this will fix my problem !!!)
Boot into recovery mode, when you get to the command line type:
sudo Xorg -configurewhich will create a default /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. Add the lines:
HorizSync 31.0 - 70.0
VertRefresh 40.0 - 75.0to the Monitor section then reboot."
However when I entered the "sudo Xorg -configure" line my computer spit back saying that "sudo" is not an acceptable command

I cannot get 1024x768 resolution permanently in my screen. When i go and adjust it in the kde personalize setting in the display menu everything seems to work. But after i reboot the system, the resolution again changes. Then i have to again configure it to 1024x768. Also i cannot find sax in openSUSE 11.3.

FC12-x86_64/KDE I want to set my resolution to 1024x768 using Intel Video adapter using the the i915 kernel module.
Putting the line below in /boot/grub/menu.lst on the kernel line after
rhgb quiet i915.modeset=1 vga=318
Is this the correct setting ?
I don't want to use a xorg.conf file.

Can't make Slack 13.1 to run at more than 1024x768. No problems where with 12.0-13.0. Here are portions of my xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log:

Note the last line marked (**) - "from config file", but I only have 1280x1024 there ! And what does that mean
(II) NV(0): Using fuzzy aspect match for initial modes
(II) NV(0): Output VGA2 using initial mode 1024x768
(--) NV(0): Virtual size is 1024x1024 (pitch 1024)
And KDE/Display only offers up to 1024x768 too. Didn't try NVIDIA driver yet but 13.0 had no problems with the same monitor,similar Card and nv driver.

I use a CRT screen and my graphics card is able to handle 1024x768 but sometimes when I start the computer the resolution is 900x600 and it is panning the 1024x768. I am currently running 800x600 but the low resolution is starting to get on my nerves. Also some programs(mostly games) require a resolution of at least 1024x758.

I installed Debian 8 Jessie with the GNOME 3 desktop environment and I couldn't get pass the login screen after several reboots. Since I read that NVIDIA graphics are problematic, I decided to reinstall the system but selected Mate desktop, which appears to be less graphic intensive than GNOME 3. It worked. However, I can't get a higher resolution than 1024x768 (In Windows I could). The Mate settings in the "System → Preferences → Monitors" does not show higher resolutions.
The information of the graphics card is this:

Before I try to install proprietary drivers as instructed in [URL] ...., I'd like to see if there's anything to try first with the default stuff installed by the system, because that page says:
As of jessie, the need for the proprietary drivers is pretty much over - nouveau now works quite well and works with dual-headed displays by simple and easy configuring from within your desktop(for KDE see System_Settings/Hardware/Display_and_Monitor/Display_Configuration) . The proprietary drivers don't provide normal logging and can be a hidden source of problems.

I am using Mercury p4VM800 mother Board and Intel PIV 2 GHz Processor. I have installed the fedora 10 Today. My screen resolution was automatically set to 650x480 and this is the only option available in graphical mode. I am not able to increase the resolution to 1024x768. I once again reinstalled the F10. during the installation, in the boot: option I have entered 'linux resolution=1024x768', but it won't work.

I'm still on GNOME with 800x600 resolution but I can't switch to 1024x768 because there is no 1024x768 option under resolution settings.My monitor is 17" so 1024x768 should work fine.My graphic card is integrated GeForce 6150.

My graphics card just died so I bought a Radeon HD 4350. My monitor is an Acer AL1916W whose default resolution is 1440x900. So I reinstalled Fedora 14 with KDE but I can't set the resolution higher than 1024x768 because that is the highest available.

I have 11.2 32 bit running in ESXi on a Dell 2850 in my colo and its working just fine. I even set the VM to allow large resolutions and am running the console at 1440x900. At first I also had the issue with just a black screen and white X pointer, but after reading I found that going into YaST > etc/sysconfig > Desktop > Display Manager > Setting of: DISPLAYMANAGER_REMOTE_ACCESS: > and changing the value from yes to no then back to yes again then rebooting, all was good.
Now on to my actual issue. Now that I can get to my system remotely via RealVNC and don't have to keep an open session logged in (ala Remote Desktop) I am finding that the window is stuck at 1024x768. I just cant find where I need to change the geometry settings to make it 1440 x 900 like my console window is in ESXi. Have been doing a lot of reading and have tried a bunch of stuff but none of it works, too much to list. I am obviously missing something and its probably really simple, but I am just not getting it.

I just installed 11.4 x64.I have already updated and installed the nvidia 260.19.36 driver via the nvidia repository. The video card is a GEforce 6200.The problem is the highest resolution it will allow is 1024x768.With the same hardware in 11.3 it was running 1920x1200. How can I get that back?

I've just installed Fedora 14. When i try to change the resolution i cannot get past 1024x768. My graphics card is the onboard Intel g41 express chipset which is - for sure -capable of bringing a higher resolution than this. I googled on this and found that i have to edit the xorg.conf file to add the required resolution mode with no luck. Moreover, I learned that Fedora has dropped the xorg.conf usage since the 10th release, which further implies that there should be a more elegant solution than editing this file. Is is a drivers problem? i searched for a linux drivers for this card with no luck.

So I have a resolution problem. Before posting here, I've checked many MANY forums for similar issues, handpicking certain techniques and trying each. Sometimes they worked, and then my problem came back.
Distro: Fedora 14
Monitor: emachines 18.5" E181HV
GPU: Nvidia GeForce 8800GT
resolution: 1360x768
My problem is that the resolution will never stretch past 1024x768. I have the image of my desktop in the middle part of the screen, with black sections on either side. Here is a list of things that I've already done or tried:
Install Nvidia drivers
disable Nouveau via grub.conf
use xrandr to modify xorg.conf and add the resolution
different cable
different DVI converter
One day, I logged into my Fedora boot, and after a week of frustration, the issue decided to fix itself. So I continued on, using Fedora and planning on a permanent switch from Windows. I log back over to Windows to play some games and whatnot (I'm not a fan of how Wine handles some games). I then log back to Fedora, and the issue is back. The resolution is messed up again.I've since removed that partition from my drive, as I've reached my wits end with troubleshooting. My linux expert friend tells me it may be that my monitor is just not good enough, or is not sending/receiving the proper EID signature, thus will not accept the resolution, or something along those lines.

I like to use rdesktop at resolution 1024x768. But without adding the parameter "-g 1024x768", it always connects me via 800x600. Is there a way to change the default value to be 1024x768 so I don't have to keep telling the system?

Kernel: Debian Sid with 2.6.32-5-amd64 and custom 2.6.36-rc7
Monitor: Samsung 712N, 17inch, with native 1280x1024 resolution
Everything was fine with both kernels with custom 1280x1024 resolution upto yesterday. But when I rebooted today, first I noticed that X stopped working. After updating xorg.conf to 1024x768, it started working . After going through the kernel log in /var/log/messages, I noticed the following differences
Yesterdays log:
nouveau 0000:00:0d.0: Detected 64MiB VRAM
nouveau 0000:00:0d.0: 64 MiB GART (aperture)
nouveau 0000:00:0d.0: Saving VGA fonts

There is an extra "Load detected" line and the resolution got reduced from 1280x1024 to 1024x768.
