Ubuntu :: Have AWN Dock - Want To Remove Panel
Jun 21, 2010
I think all I have to do is disable gnome-panel somehow, but I wanted to check here first, so I don't screw up my computer. As it is, I have the dock working great. However, I can't just turn off the panel, which I currently have at the top of the screen.

I downloaded cairo-dock and wanted my top panel to go away. I read on some other post to go into gconf-editor and I am not completely sure, but, apps>panel>something else. I didn't pay to much attention. I want it back and I just want to hide it with a really long delay which I can do no problem.

I am trying with different Docks. Currently i am hiding both top and bottom bar of my Ubuntu.
I like to remove them completely so my Dock dominate the screen. At the same time i like to bring both the bar later if i need them.
How to remove the bar and how can i bring the bar again.

I"m thinking of trying out Cairo Dock with Ubuntu for the next 2 weeks until Meerkat comes out, but if I prefer the gnome panel I'd like to bring that back. I can right click the lower task bar in Ubuntu and "remove this panel." if there is there any way I can bring it back? Also if anyone here uses Cairo Dock could you let me know your thoughts on it?

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynix on my HP laptop with WUBI. When I start up my computer and choose to start with Ubuntu, it shows no errors. When I login, I can do anything just fine (I have had to resort to right-clicking on the desktop and opening documents and things from there) until I hover over the Panel or the Cairo Dock, when instantaneously the computer freezes and refuses to do anything at all, no matter how long I leave it (I left it on over night and it still was frozen - the screensaver hadn't come on or anything). The only thing that still works is the mouse, that will still move around, but obviously if I try to click on anything then nothing happens.

get rid of the bottom panel in Opensuse 11.2 and just use a dock with applets. However, if I remove the bottom panel, the little icon that allows me to connect to wireless will go with it, right? And it wouldn't do me much good to get rid of that, because then I can't connect to the Internet...So, is there a wireless connection applet for the dock? I didn't see one anywhere. I can install the file manager app, but could I access it from there on the dock? I just want to make sure I can still connect to the Internet without the bottom panel.

I've tried some more recent builds of Libre Office from Alien Bob and I'm still getting crashes when I try to dock the Navigator panel on the left side of the window for any of the office applications.
Details are in this post. More specifically, I'm running libreoffice-3.2.99.3-i486 from Eric. When I run 'oowriter' (Libreoffice Writer) from the command line, and then try to dock the navigator panel, I get this message after the crash:
Code:
Gtk-Message: (for origin information, set GTK_DEBUG): failed to
retrieve property `GtkOptionMenu::indicator-size' of type
`GtkRequisition' from rc file value "0" of type `glong'
Gtk-Message: (for origin information, set GTK_DEBUG): failed to
retrieve property `GtkOptionMenu::indicator-spacing' of type
`GtkBorder' from rc file value "0" of type `glong'
I don't know if it happens with the 64-bit version or not. I haven't tried it yet. I'm no stranger to submitting bug reports, but I haven't looked closely at Libreoffice's bug submitting procedures. I'll do that soon.

Although it would resemble the Unity desktop that some of us here may have run away from, is it possible to set the left-hand-side dock to remain on screen, possibly only sliding off when a program window needs it to?

I was wondering if it's possible to remove the gnome panel, I prefer the use of dock-lets and I don't have any use for the panel but when I remove my panel with apt en reboot my computer he seems to be unable to load gnome and I only get a terminal(or KDE desktop when installed) I didn't find another topic on this so I was wondering if it's possible to remove and if, how to achieve it.

I installed Sensors Applet & hddtemp. Installation was smooth, all of my devices were automatically detected and all seemed good.Then I restart the computer, and when everything comes back up, the processor, MB, and GPU are all working (showing a temperature) but none of the (6) hard drives are showing a temperature. After fiddling around with it I found that removing the applet from the panel, and then adding it back again fixes the problem. But then the next time I restart the computer it breaks again.

I am going through some old baby pictures of my daughter over 15,000+ and she is only 3 years old.....
Here is my problem. I am moving and sorting all of these and tossing some. I have several times right clicked on the trash and by mistake clicked remove from panel. Is there anyway to hide that option for the trash? I know I have done this several times before and now its happening alto with the project I am working on. It would be nice if I could disable that option.

I went to rearrange the icons on my top gnome-panel today, as some of the notification icons are displayed to the right of the power menu, and whenever I right click on any gnome panel, I get two options only 'Help' and 'About Panels' the menu options for edit, move, remove etc. are gone.
I don't really know where to start with this, as I dont think I have tried to edit the panel since a clean install, so don't know when it was last OK.

Ubuntu 10.10 x64. So I want to know is there a way to disable the "Remove From Panel" option when in the context menu "Lock To Panel" is selected in Gnome. I have taken a quick look at Ubuntu 11.04 alpha it seems this is a feature set as default, it just annoys me the now and then I will remove applets when I am not intending to do so.

In Maverick I could remove the last Gnome panel by editing gconf and removing gnome-panel from desktop > gnome > session > required_components.I've just updated to Natty and doing this makes no difference. I assume Unity is doing it now, or maybe zeitgeist?I've grep'd through .local and .config, and checked Startup Applications but it still loads gnome-panel every session.

Since upgrading to 11.04 I've been trying to remove the top panel in classic in the same manner as I did with 10.10.
gconf-editor -> desktop -> gnome -> session -> remove "gnome-panel" value.
This does not remove the top panel anymore. Relog and restart has been tried. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to remove it? I'm using AWN, so the top panel isn't useful for me
Solved: So I just randomly thought of changing my login session to user defined, and voila! Panel gone Guessing logging into classic just won't let you log on without it.
