Ubuntu :: Growing Raid Crashed Now Can't Get Assembled

Aug 3, 2010

I was growing a 3 disk raid 5 to a 4 disk raid 6.I used mdadm --grow /dev/md0 --level=6 --raid-devices=4 backup- file=/home/user/Desktop/md0.backup for the grow. The drive I added was /dev/sde1. Well it was going strong for like 2-3 days and last time I checked it was at 73% rebuild.Well the frikin power went out on me and when I came back home I can't get the array assembled.

I just have a fear that i lost my superblocks but I'm also a moron when it comes to this stuff.. I would like to think not, but I'm sure there are much smarter people than I on this issue. Any help would help cause of course I have a lot of stuff on my raid with 3 2tb drives.. the irony is I was converting to raid 6 to make sure I had really good safety net.

Ubuntu Servers :: Raid Array Incorrectly Assembled On Boot

Feb 20, 2011

I've got a couple of new hard disks that I have partitioned (3 partitions per disk) and set up in a mirrored software raid array using mdadm. They've synced, I've put file systems on them (1 x ext4, 2 x luks + ext4) and I can mount them. I've checked the partitions using fdisk. I've checked the filesystems using fsck. So far so good. Next step is that I'd like mdadm to automatically assemble them on boot. (Not bothered about mounting and crypttabing yet.)

I've used sudo /usr/share/mdadm/mkconf to generate a new mdadm.conf with the appropriate UUIDs for the new partitions. I've checked that this matches the output of sudo mdadm --detail --scan

The new lines in this file are:

ARRAY /dev/md9 level=raid1 num-devices=2 UUID=470fb8a6:45561fe0:ebda4a02:9ba7a1ed
ARRAY /dev/md10 level=raid1 num-devices=2 UUID=f351fbba:c704a4b2:ebda4a02:9ba7a1ed
ARRAY /dev/md8 level=raid1 num-devices=2 UUID=c6ccec17:2274588e:ebda4a02:9ba7a1ed

To check that the mdadm.conf is fine I have stopped the new arrays:

Hardware :: Determine The UUID Of 2 Disks That Are Assembled In A RAID1 Array?

Feb 17, 2011

I just experienced a HDD failure and while reorganizing the drives inthis machine I realized the benefits of UUID instead of /dev/sdX nomenclature. I am trying to determine the UUID of 2 disks that are assembled in a RAID1 array. right now they are /dev/sde & /dev/sdf with each only one partition. I tried ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid but I get only the UUID of other disks, not the ones currently ID'd as sde & sdf. my mdadm.conf assembles several raid arrays all by UUID, but somehow, I cant recall how I got the UUIDs of the other HDDs at first...

Ubuntu Servers :: RAID-5 Recovery (spare/active) / Degraded And Can't Create Raid ,auto Stop Raid [md1]?

Feb 1, 2011

Could any RAID gurus kindly assist me on the following RAID-5 issue?I have an mdadm-created RAID5 array consisting of 4 discs. One of the discs was dropping out, so I decided to replace it. Somehow, this went terribly wrong and I succeeded in marking two of the drives as faulty, and the re-adding them as spare.

Now the array is (logically) no longer able to start:

mdadm: Not enough devices to start the array.Degraded and can't create RAID ,auto stop RAID [md1]

I was able to examine the disks though:

Code:
root@127.0.0.1:/etc# mdadm --examine /dev/sdb2
/dev/sdb2:
Magic : a92b4efc
Version : 00.90.00
code....

Code:
mdadm --create --assume-clean --level=5 --raid-devices=4 /dev/sda2 /dev/sdb2 /dev/sdc2 /dev/sdd2
As I don't want to ruin the maybe small chance I have left to rescue my data, I would like to hear the input of this wise community.

Ubuntu :: Growing Root Partition Along With Corresponding SoftRAID Array

Sep 4, 2010

So, I recently installed a server with several software RAID partitions over three drives. After installation, I pulled out the CD-ROM and added a fourth drive.

I believe I successfully grew all the arrays (RAID1 for /boot, RAID5 for /, and RAID1 for swap), but I'm not seeing that growth in my filesystem.

The root partition is no larger than it previously was, even though the specific array that is mounted to it has grown to the proper size.

$ df -h
Code:
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/md2 292G 6.8G 271G 3% /
none 118M 292K 118M 1% /dev
none 123M 0 123M 0% /dev/shm

[Code]....

I'm sure I'm missing something quite simple here, but how can I resize my root partition to the full size of /dev/md2?

I should note that even though I ripped out the CD-ROM in favor of an additional HDD, I can probably run a live session from a USB stick (although I've been unable to thus far- any solution that can avoid doing so is preferable).

Ubuntu Servers :: Growing Software RAID5 With MDADM

May 13, 2011

My fileserver initially had 3 1TB drives in RAID 5 configured with mdadm as /dev/md1. (System root is a mirrored raid on /dev/md0) I went to go add a 4th 1TB drive to /dev/md1 and grow the raid 5 accordingly. I was initially following this guide: [URL] but ran into issues on the 3rd and 4th commands. I've been trying a few things to remedy the issue since, but no luck. The drive seems to have been added to /dev/md1 properly, but I can't get the filesystem to resize to 3TB. I also am not entirely sure how /dev/md1p1 got created, but it appears to be the primary partition on the logical device /dev/md1.
Relevent information:

Code:
fdisk -l /dev/md1
Disk /dev/md1: 3000.6 GB, 3000606523392 bytes
2 heads, 4 sectors/track, 732569952 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 8 * 512 = 4096 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 65536 bytes / 196608 bytes
Disk identifier: 0xda4939fa .....

The filesystem originated as ext3, I believe its showing up as ext2 in some of these results because I disabled the journal when doing some initial troubleshooting. Not sure what the issue is, but I didn't want to blindly perform operations on the filesystem and risk losing my data.

General :: Tar Backup File Keeps Growing?

Jan 7, 2010

I am new to Linux. I am using tar to backup my emails to a server. I would like to automate this process to routinely backup my emails periodicly, however, i keep running into a problem: I start in the dir I would like to create the tar file (dir size = 240MB). I enter the following command

tar cf bup.mail.llc.tar "/Users/d/Library/Mail/INBOX.mbox/Messages"
file size = 234MB

When I would like to backup my emails into the previously created tar file I use the following command:

tar uf bup.mail.llc.tar "/Users/d/Library/Mail/INBOX.mbox/Messages"file size = 462MB The backup command works, except the size of the original tar file grows, around twice the size. When I extract the updated tar file (file size = 462MB), the unarchived file is 240MB the same size as the original directory.

Why does the size of the tar keep growing each time i perform 'tar uf'?? I don't understand this

Ubuntu :: Temporarily Copy Data Before Growing RAID0 Array?

Feb 1, 2011

I currently have two hard drives, with my root partition configured in RAID0. I'd like to add two additional hard drives, and include them in my RAID0 array. I need to recreate the array to do this, so I'd like to copy everything off of the existing array, add the drives, build the new array, and copy everything back. I have an external hard drive with four times the capacity of my current array. What would be the best way to copy this data so that nothing is missed, so I can just copy everything back and boot back up? dd, image the entire root partition, mount it after creating the new array, copy everything back (at the filesystem level) dd, image the entire root partition, write it back out to the new array, I'm not sure how this would work, because the partition will be the wrong size, I don't know much about dd. rsync, just rsync everything on root over to the external something else? I plan on booting to a live CD and mounting my current array there, so I won't be working on a live filesystem.

My question is can Fedora Core create a RAID5 array and grow latter without having to back up data to external hard drive and re-create the array? I am looking for something that is easy to use and manage. If Fedora Core doesnt have this option, can you recommend other distributions that can do this?

Server :: Raid1 On Debian Won't Boot After Growing?

Apr 21, 2010

I installed a raid1 on a debian lenny box with only 1 drive "--raid-devices=1" because I didn't have the other drive yet. When I got the other drive, I used "mdadm --grow /dev/md0 --raid-devices=2" and "mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --add /dev/sdb1" The original drive is sda1. I watched /proc/mdstat until it was completely synced, and after a reboot, the system will not reassamble the raid. It fails with "mdadm: no devices found for /dev/md0" This is where root is, therefore, I get nowhere. From a rescue cd I can disable the other drive and shrink back down to 1 device and it boots fine.

Could anybody give me a pointer to a tool that can oversee growing directories or files or maybe a script that able to do this (possibly involving Cron). I try using "Find" but I cannot find any files that are suspiciously growing. I suspect it's a directory that is growing, but I don't know.

Ubuntu :: Mdadm Raid + GRUB = Not Booting - Error: Unsupported RAID Version: 0.91

Jul 18, 2011

I have a raid5 on 10 disk, 750gb and it have worked fine with grub for a long time with ubuntu 10.04 lts. A couple of days ago I added a disk to the raid, growd it and then resized it.. BUT, I started the resize-process on a terminal on another computer, and after some time my girlfriend powered down that computer!
So the resize process cancelled in the middle and i couldn't acess any of the HDDs so I rebooted the server.

Now the problem, the system is not booting up, simple black with a blinking line. Used a rescue CD to boot it up, finised the resize-process and the raid seems to be working fine so I tried to boot normal again. Same problem. Rescue cd, updated grub, got several errors: error: unsupported RAID version: 0.91. I have tried to purge grub, grub-pc, grub commmon, removed /boot/grub and installed grub again. Same problem.

I have tried to erased mbr (# dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/sdX bs=446 count=1) on sda (ide disk, system), sdb (sata, new raid disk). Same problem. Removed and reinstalled ubuntu 11.04 and is now getting error: no such device: (hdd id). Again tried to reinstall grub on both sda and sdb, no luck. update-grub is still generating error about raid id 0.91 and is back on a blinking line on normal boot. When you'r resizeing a raid MDADM changed the ID from 0.90 to 0.91 to prevent something that happend happened. But since I have completed the resize-process MDADM have indeed changed the ID back to 0.90 on all disks.

I have also tried to follow a howto on a similar problem with a patch on [URL] But I cant compile, various error about dpkg. So my problem is, I cant get grub to work. It just gives me a blinking line and unsupported RAID version: 0.91.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot - Win 7 And 10.10 On Raid 0 - No Raid Detect

Nov 26, 2010

I have installed Ubuntu on my m1530 since 8.04 and currently dual boot Win7 and 10.10. I would like to dual boot on my PC, but I have run into a problem. I am not a pro at Ubuntu, but this problem I can not solve by reading forums like I have in the past.

I realize this is a common problem, but I have noticed people having success.

I have a M4A87TD EVO MB with two Seagate drives in Raid 0. (The raid controller is a SB850 on that MB) I use the raid utility to create the raid drive that Windows7x64 uses. I have 2 partitions and 1 unused space. Partition 1 is Windows, partition 2 is for media, and the remaining unused space is for Ubuntu.

I am running ubuntu-10.10-desktop-amd64 off a Cruzer 16GB flash drive that was installed via Universal-USB-Installer-1.8.1.4.

My problem like so many others is that when I load into Ubuntu, gparted detects two separate hard drives instead of the raid. I read that this is because kpartx is not installed on 10.10. I then went in LiveCD mode and downloaded kpartx from Synaptic Manager. Gparted still reported two drives. I opened terminal and run a few commands with kpartx. I received an error. (Forgive me I didn't write it down, but I believe it said something about a communication error. I will try again later and see.)

Currently I am reflashing the Cruzer with a persistence of 4GB. I am not familiar with this process, but I understand that my LiveCD boot will save information I download to it. I decided to try this method because I was going to install kpartx and reboot to see if this made a difference.

I am looking for any suggestions on a different method or perhaps someone to tell me that the raid controller or some hardware isn't supported. I did install ubuntu-10.10-alternate-amd64 on my flash drive, but fail to get past detecting my CD-ROM drive since it's not plugged in. If this method is viable, I will plug it in. I also watched the ..... video were a guy creates Raid 0 with the alternated CD, but it wasn't a dual boot and didn't use a raid controller from a MB.

Aug 3, 2010

I am trying to connect a RAID Box to the server via LSI 8880EM2 RAID controller. The raid box is FUjitsu Externus DX60 with raid 1 configured. The server is Fujitsu Primergy SX300 S5 with LSI 8880EM2 RAID card. The external raid box is being recognised by the raid controllers bios.

The server runs CentOS 5.5 64bit. I have installed the megaraid_sas driver from LSI website and MegaCLI utility but CentOS still fails to see the box.MegaCLI utility, when launched from CentOS, recognises the raid box, CentOS does not(no mapping being created in /dev).

I have also tried to create a logical RAID0 HDD on one physical HDD(as seen by MegaCLI) with MegaCLI utility in CentOS.The result was success and the new logical drive could have been used, but when restarting the server, the controllers' bios fails with an error (not surprised(one logical RAID0 on one physical HDD)) and configuration is being erased.

Has anyone tried connecting 8880EM2 controller to a raid box with raid configured on the box, running it all under CentOS and what were the results.
