Ubuntu :: Get Pidgin To Use Mail Notification Applet For New Emails?
Apr 25, 2011
I run Ubuntu with Unity. I see a Mail Notification applet in the tray that announces unread mail (from Evolution) and incoming IMs from Empathy. I uninstalled both programs, and replaced the IM program with Pidgin. (I don't have a preferred email client yet.)
Now Pidgin lets me know whether I have received new email messages from the services it is connected to. These notifications show up in the Buddy List window. Is there a way to get Pidgin to use the Mail Notification applet instead? I read in their site that "Pidgin was not designed to be an email client" but it would seem that all the pieces are in place to reroute those notifications to the mail notification applet.
Optionally, it would also be cool if when I clicked on those notifications, a browser window would open up to the webmail account the notification came from. (I have both Windows Live and Gmail accounts.)

I was using both the Indicator Applet and the Notification Area applets in my panel but realized that very often when I started the system, the icons of these applet appeared mixed. Some items were duplicated (for example the keyboard indicator) where others were missing (sometimes the battery indicator, sometimes the sound indicator, etc). When that happened I had to remove them and add them to panel again.
This seems to be a bug that makes one applet interfere with the other (maybe because there are some items that appear in both but when you add both initially nothing is duplicated but after a system restart the problem happens). After searching for some way to fix this apparent bug without success I decided to remove the Indicator applet and keep just the Notification Area.
It works but then I don't have the sound applet anymore, because it was part of the Indicator Applet.
I searched for a standalone sound applet but I couldn't find any. Do you know of any such applet that I could install in the system? If I can find any it would be fine to me and I would be satisfied using just the Notification Area.

Does anybody know how to get back Pidgin original icon(s) in Xubuntu 11.04 Notification area? I need it because I don't like that blue envelope in Indicator plugin, I would like to use it as "old fashion way".
Here is an example how icon looks like when Show system tray icon is selected.

how to get this working? I mean have an icon in the tray alerting of new emails. I used to have it working using moztraybiff [URL] in Thunderbird 2, but since I installed F11 and thus started using Thunderbird 3 I haven't been able to get this working. (Evolution, on the other hand, has this and it works fine, but I'm having trouble, [URL], with using Google calendars in it. If I could get that working I would think about switching to Evolution).

How do I turn off Pidgin notification balloons when a buddy logs on or off? I've looked through the application's preferences like 3 times; is there some sort of system control for notification balloons?

I have nagios and postfix on the same ubuntu box.Postfix is able to send emails out as root and my user id to my gmail acct, but not as user nagios, which does own the nagios process. I haven't been able to find a way to authorize user nagios to send email (really), but I don't know if this is the underlying issue. Frankly I don't care what acct they originate from as long as they arrive.Currently, all notification emails are being dumped locally into root's mailbox. There are no errors in either the nagios.log or the mail.log.I've added my gmail address to the contacts.cfg, replaced it in the nagios.cfg, and put it every other place I could find root's mailbox mentioned. I've also created an alias for root to my gmail acct with no luck (didn't want to do that fearing I'd receive emails for other system events, but it didn't work anyway)

In the indicator-applet next to the clock, I have a list of programs which includes Pidgin. Now it used to be a case where if I opened Pidgin logged onto the services and closed the window, it would run in the background and i could re-open the window from the indicator-applet and get notifications of people logging on etc.Now for one reason or another that doesnt happen no more. I can open it through the applet, but if i close the window, it shuts the program down...also if Pidgin is running, i get NO notifications of people logging on, new messages etc.

After upgrading to Kubuntu 10.10 the icon for the gnome-network-manager (which I had installed instead of the former knetworkmanager) does not show up.
Although I can connect to the Internet, I am not able to set up my VPN without an icon showing up.
Checking at the terminal indicates that there is indeed something wrong here:
Code:
sovonet@sovonet:~$ nm-applet
** Message: applet now removed from the notification area
** (nm-applet:3027): DEBUG: old state indicates that this was not a disconnect 0
[Code].....

I'd like to know how to remove the monitor settings icon from from notification area applet in 11.4. You see, I'm using nvidia drivers with nvidia-settings program, so this little icon is irrelevant to me, also it uses up free visual space.

My networking seems to be OK but when any changes are made the NetworkManager Applet 0.7.996 (I think) in the panel pops up a small window ~ 300*80 pixels which displays some faint coloured lines and dotted lines where, presumably, there should be a message of some form. How can I configure it to get the message?

On about 90% of bootups I find that network manager has disappeared from the notification area to be replaced by a random duplicate of one of the other icons (at random). If I remove the notification area and add it again all is fine.

I installed the "mail notification" applet from synaptic and I like it best because it monitors multiple email accounts, something I find hard to find. I do have one question though, how do I get it to start up with every gnome session?

I can't get rid of the "Mail Notification Properties" Window at startup. Every time the system comes up, there is the window for the settings. It's just empty as I don't want any more mail notifications than Thunderbird has.
I looked into the Mail Notification Properties and haven't found any settings to get rid of the window. And I disabled "Mail Notification" in System > Preferences.
Still this window keeps coming back over and over again.
It even survived the upgrade from Karmic to Lucid. How can I get rid of it?

I use the Gnome Mail Notification Applet and have recently moved from a wired desktop machine to a wireless laptop.
The problem I have is that the Mail Notification shows an error because it tries to check mail immediately, the network hasn't finished connecting at this time though.
Is there a way to add a delay to this? I can't see one.
Or if anyone can suggest an alternative that is just as good (or better) and allows for a delay?

I've been using mail-notification from the repos for ages to monitor my gmail account with no problems. Since I upgraded to Karmic, it's been popping up an irritating dialog window whenever a new mail arrives (as well as the standard notification). how to turn it off without losing all notifications?

I have mail-notification installed (using Lucid beta) but for some reason it doesn't send notifications using libnotify, but instead shows a standard gtk pop-up. I have the evolution plugin for mail-notification installed, and in fact the issue is not related to evolution, since I tried setting up mail-notification directly for an IMAP account and got the same ugly pop-up.

I've had Mail Notification installed for awhile, but was disappointed by the fact that it tries to check for e-mail before my computer can even establish an internet connection (and then never checks again), forcing me to manually start the program after every boot (an issue others have reported as well).
As a result, I removed the program via Ubuntu Software Center, and tried using cGmail (which I've used before, without issue), only to encounter a bug. I then uninstalled cGmail, and installed Mail Notification again. However, as soon as I started Mail Notification, I noticed that it still had all of my preferences, including my previous e-mail account, saved.
How is this possible? I tried removing it via Ubuntu Software Center, and then again with Synaptic---but still, if I reinstall it, the settings are all still there. I want to completely remove Mail Notification, and all of its settings (even if I decide to eventually install it again), but now am confused as to how to do this.

I am using:
Code:
Ubuntu 10.4
2.6.32-21-generic
Evolution 2.83.3
I have noticed that when I get a new email, it never shows a new mail icon in the panel. I had the same problem with 9.10, and I thought the problem would go away when I upgraded to 10.4. I have checked the properties in Mail preferences:
Code:
Play sound - yes
Display a notification - yes
Indicate new messages in panel - yes

I recently decided to switch back to a stand alone email client from gmail. I started with thunderbird, which had a very intuitive user interface and was working fairly well, except for the fact that when it wasn't supposed to be doing anything, it was taking up about 40% of my CPU (this is after it had downloaded all the emails, so there really wasn't anything that needed that much cpu usage from my perspective). After investigating that a bit, I decided I'm going to go for something lighter, and now I'm trying to claws-mail. This one is fast and quick, with very little bells and whistle, and I think it has the potential of keeping me happy.
However, there are few things that I can't figure out how to do. The two main ones right now are: How do I make it download all the emails in at least the inbox folder? I'm using imap protocol with gmail, and I'm happy that the two mailboxes are very well synced, however the only thing it is downloaded by default is the email header, and not the content. I would like to be able to download the content immediately, so I can read the email offline as well. How can I set up GPG to sign my emails automatically? In claws-mail to sign my emails, I need to go to the Options->Privacy Options->PGP Mime, followed by Options->Sign. Is it possible to make this the default option?
