Ubuntu Installation :: Automatically Run Script After Kernel Update?
Sep 12, 2010I'd like to have my own script be executed automatically after doing a Linux kernel update. Is there somewhere i can link into this process that isn't touched by the update itself? The purpose of this idea is to try automate the installation of sound (alsa 1.0.23-2) and video drivers (nvidia from website) that i typically need to do after every kernel update.

Oct 3, 2010I just noticed that my USB sticks are not automatically mounted anymore after having updated kernel from 2.6.32-24-generic to 2.6.32-25-generic on my Acer Extensa 5220 laptop. It still works if I "sudo modprobe usb-storage". What might have gone wrong? I'm not experiencing this on my desktop machine also running 10.04. How to fix this permanently? And now I remember that I'm not able to use my mobile broadband either (Nokia N900 in PC Suite mode through USB). It's just not detected anymore. It must suffer from this same problem. I tried to roll back to the previous kernel, but then the restricted driver for my Broadcom WLAN refuses to install

On another page, in the comments, I found out that deleting a line in the /etc/default/burg can fix it. But my problem is that I don't now which line.
My guess is about line number seven, but as I'm saying, I'm not sure.

iv looked at every solution from every related forum post but i still cant get into either operating system on my computer. i dont have either of the installation discs which is why i really need to be able to get back into windows, as well as my files and settings. i dont mind if i have to completely remove ubuntu and everything to do with it, as i can easily set that up again in a matter of minutes. right now i just need a way to return my computer to how it was before i installed ubuntu

I thought that the process might be too dangerous, so I removed all the packages that had were part of Grub2. GRUB however I left installed. After a reboot, The PC comes up to a menu that looks just like this:

Ubuntu :: No Display After Botched BURG Install?
Nov 24, 2010and I did a silly noobish thing. I have been using Ubuntu in various flavors for a little over a year now, and decided to install it alongside my Win7 Install on my desktop. Last week I read about BURG on omgubuntu.co.ukI am fairly certain I botched the install of burg somehowWhenever I turn on the computer, there is no display, not Mobo splash screen, not post, no GRUB menu nothing. the Display light is orange, indicating no input detected. But I know the OS is loading, I can hear it bootup, I can login, just by pressing enter, then typing my password, then enter again. Once I hear the login screen drum beat, if I turn off the monitor, then turn it on again, I get a super low res display. the driver works, compiz effects work, but everything is at 640 x 480. when I go to system-> preferences-> monitor the display is labeled as unknown and I can't change the resolution.I can access the BIOS, but the screen still does not detect the input, even if I power cycle the monitor after access the BIOS, so I won't try to change any settings, as I can't see what I am doing. The only reason I know I am in the Bios is that I can press f10 and then y to cause it to reset to default settings and cause a reboot.My system:ATi Radeon hd5870AMD Phenom II X4 3.4 GHzWD Velociraptor 300 Gb4 GbRamASUS M4A78-E

May 7, 2011Has anyone played with Burg? I'm a bit apprehensive about trying it.This laptop had 10.10 as the only OS but I shrank the partition and installed 11.04 in the empty space.So 11.04 re-wrote the Grub with itself at the top of the list.So now I have 10.10 in sda1 and 11.04 in sda6.Do you think that Burg will cause any problems?

Sep 9, 2010I installed the new 2.6.34.4-0.1 security update earlier today. Now, the login screen no longer responds to my keyboard. In particular, I cannot type my password to log in. If I reboot into failsafe mode, the keyboard works and I can log in.
I'm running 11.3 on a white MacBook 4,1.

Dec 14, 2009As the title says. System is openSUSE 11.1 running KDE3.5 with KDE4.3 also installed to use desktop effects in KDE3.5. After update X uses 90% CPU to scroll down a page in FF, OOo or even in text editor, either with KWin and KWin4. With KWin4 desktop effects can't be enabled in system config.

OpenSUSE Install :: Kernel Update Also In Error On 11.2?
Sep 26, 2010After the lastest update 11.2 also suffers from the problem already reported here for 11.3. I am lucky to have two linux partitions and was actualy able to boot into the second partition. From this second system I could repair this or at least a quick-n-dirty fallback to be able to boot.
1. Copied the 2.6.21.12-0.2 version for initrd and vmlinuz from /boot to /first_partition/boot
2. Copied the /first_partition/boot/grub/menu.lst.old to /first_partition/boot/grub/menu.lst to reset to the old menu.
After boot the system could start but modules were not loaded.
3. copied /lib/modules/2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop from the second partition to the first.
4. The same for /usr/src/linux-2.6.31.12-0.2*
Now my system will boot and start modules such as network and sound. Still, was this correct? I don't know for sure if there are some issues that I haven't discovered yet. And obviously, what will happen with future updates (either kernel or other)?

OpenSUSE Install :: Xorg Don't Work After Kernel 2.6.27.42-0.1 Update?
Jan 18, 2010After upgrading kernel, system (AMD 780G)refuses to start in graphic mode. Computer services running fine, but there's nothing or some trash on screen when X started. And no way how to get out except restarting or shutting down from remote computer.
Reinstalling, unistalling ATI driver doesn't help. Also manipulations with xorg.conf (install, safe etc previous file versions)doesn't help.
Sax2 detects videocard correctly, but result is same regardless which resolution@Hz is specified.

OpenSUSE Install :: New Kernel As Part Of Auto Update?
Jan 20, 2010the normal auto updater ran and installed a new kernel for security vulnerability and it was a .pae version. So after restart I now have 4 options on the boot screen, which includes the normal "SUSE" and a 'SUSE pae" version. defaulted to the new pae version and booted up. I got the video definition not found and had to enter a value manually. The system comes up but not into x system. It gives me a login prompt and startx yields a "terminal not found." Ran SaX2 and startx now works. Unfortunately my KDE desktop is messed up now. There are none of the normal "taskbar" at boot up started processes there. So what should I have done? how do I get my system back to normal and roll out the new kernel and all these changes?

Oct 28, 2010my friend updated kernel today and it "stopped working" and I was asked to fix it he is new to linux, and I don't have physical access to that notebook from what I know main problems are:
1. no network devices exist (except for loopback)
2. sound card driver is missing (nVidia MCP79)
3. in grub menu after choosing new kernel uname -r sais the old one's version
wifi card is atheros, but I don't know specific model.

Dec 5, 2010On a fresh install 11.3 gnome I am getting an update freeze on the kernel-desktop-2.6.34.7-0.5.1. This is on the initial software update after first log in on fresh system. It downloads the package and freezes during the update and causes all my other updates to reload. I went to init 3 and ran zypper update and saw that it made it to 91% and then stopped. After that I usually get a corrupted install.

Feb 19, 2009I just tried to update to kernel 2.6.27.15-170.2.24.fc10 (x86_64) at the suggestion of the gnome update widget, and the process hung. A bunch of other things were updating at the same time, many of which were related to audacity or wine.
I'm not sure just what was being updated, because the option to review which updates are available does not work - when I click on it, nothing happens, but when I take the other choice (install all updates), I take pot luck. It would be nice to be able to choose which programs to update, and to be able to upgrade the kernel independently, but I don't seem to be able to do that at the moment.
