Today when working with Windows 7 Disk Management, I carelessly mark the partition on which Win 7 is installed as ACTIVE and the chain of problems began. When I restarted my laptop, something like this appeared:

After windows 7 failed to install and decided to take my partitions with it I managed to restore them from liveCD.I now can't get grub to work properly. I finally got it to find boot into one of the my two OS', but then borked grub it again when trying to update-grub2.Output from bootinfoscript attached.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an hp pavilion 15-b106ed with UEFI. I disabled secure boot and installed debian jessie form the CD1 iso (RC1 installer) burned to an USB key. Installation went smoothly, but after rebooting I get grub's terminal-like screen saying:
"GNU GRUB version 2.02 beta2-9ubuntu1. Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported... etc"
The problem is that as soon as I turn on the computer that grub screen shows up and I can't boot from USB anymore nor
access the BIOS settings, no matter how fast I press F9, F10 and such. I guess I have to tell him to boot from the USB using the grub terminal...
I have 2 hard disks. sda,sdb
In sda, I have 4 partitions, and I have windows 7 in one of the extended partitions [not in the primary partition].
In sdb, I have 3 partitions. 2 for storage, and 1 10GB drive for Ubuntu. Again, Ubuntu is not of a primary partition.
I had ubuntu 10.04 running on that for a long time. However, I wanted to reinstall ubuntu and use 10.10.This is what I did EXACTLY:Booted from Ubuntu install CD
Chose advanced istall
Selected sdb3 for Ubuntu
I installed GRUB2 on the SAME partition as Ubuntu aka sdb3 Installed then rebooted
I can boot into Ubuntu fine, but whenever I select Windows 7 bootloader from the GRUB menu, the screen goes black, and my PC reboots.

I have tried the testdisk/update-grub method, but it didn't work.
ive got a windows partition and a ubuntu-10.10 partition. i just tried to reinstall windows on the first one - but things didn't work out properly. after the first restart the pc just hung in the first boot screen - it wouldn't boot from the windows cd or the harddrive. every time i restart the computer it just hangs in that screen. i can't even choose to boot from cd/usb to use a livecd and rescue my files on the ubuntu partition. its like the keyboard doesn't work anymore. ive tried both a usb keyboard and one of the old kind with the prongs. so i cant get into ubuntu.
here's the screen, it pops up a second after i restart. usually the pc just boots up a couple seconds later and i can choose beteen win/unbuntu; or i can just press 'esc' and choose to boot from usb. but now nothing is happening, the keyboard doesn't seem to work, and it wont go passed this screen.*edit* actually the keyboard is working, because ctrl-alt-del restarts the computer, but thats about it..
I have this annoying problem since day one.I am testing out Red Hat RHEL5, everything is fine except DNS look up.If I ping www.google.com, it doesn't work, ping ip address it all works;if I bring up browser, put www.google.com it doesn't work, can't find the name, however, simply put ip address there it works.My DNS seeting seems ok, and the DNS works from Windows box.

This works in virt-manager when I boot the physical usb device a virtual disk with a usb bus and it works flawlessly, but when I plug it into a physical machine the cdrom detects fails to mount /dev/sdb1 as fstype=iso9660.
I have an HP Pavilion m7480n PC with Windows XP installed on the C-drive. I successfully installed FC 12 onto the spare USB drive. When I rebooted the PC all I got was a blinking underscore at the extreme upper left position of a totally black screen. After a bit of experimenting I found that if I hit the F1 key during the boot process, go into the BIOS setup, do nothing within the setup, and press ESC to get out of the setup then the PC will go back into the boot cycle a second time. During the second time however a small text message appears with words to the effect "Press any key to enter GRUB..." after which the GRUB splash screen comes up with the choice for FC 12 or "Other" (referring to Win XP). At that point I can boot into either one.
View 4 Replies View RelatedOpenSUSE is starting to drive me a bit nuts. Actually what I'm trying to do is simply install VMWare server on a recent as possible SUSE and run 2 virtual machines, both the same SUSE. Of course 11.2 32 bit doesn't run VMWare server 2 so it's back to 11.1. The trouble is, 11.1 won't install properly on my PC.
The install process, booted and installed from the 11.1 network install iso image on CD, runs fine. The PC reboots from hard disk and stops at the grub prompt. I've tried the auto-repair option and reinstalled it from scratch a second time always with the same results. It seems the root partition is hosed, and that's where my understanding hits its limits. Can anyone help?
Incidentally should anyone be able to advise on the VMWare conundrum I'd also be interested. Maybe in another thread...
I have a dual boot system: windows xp and suse(10.2). I had to reinstall windows(again). When I tried to use the installer, it kept reseting my partitions to 500gb+ to linux. Nothing I tried would let me put it to the way it was(50gb to linux). Repair install failed. Update wouldn't work. MSwindows in the grub boot menu disappeared. I tried reinstalling suse. The installer blocked any attempt by me to put the partitions back to normal. How do reset the windows and linux partitions(850gb windows, 50gb to suse linux)?

From what i can see all the solutions on the web want me to edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file. The problem is that i don't have one. Someone also mentioned that if i don't have a menu.lst file then i should look for the grub.conf file. I don't have on of those either. The closest thing in /boot/grub is grub.cfg but that looks nothing like the descriptions i have heard of /boot/grub/menu.lst file

Keep being told it cant find it! It only has one line running info.php. Keeps saying there is a swp file of this name in var/www. How do I delete this and get my copy of php working properly?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI wanted windows to appear first in my grub2 menu so I renamed the 30_os_probe file(or whatever it felename is) to 09_os_probe so that it comes before the 10 linux file, problem is whenever these files get updated the updater is unable to find the 30_os_probe file since I renamed it and recreates it... leaving me with two versions (09 and 30) with 09 being of course outdated.
The updater also fails to run update-grub and instead attempts to update grub.cfg manually... and fails. I had to manually do a sudo update-grub.
Is there any way to fix this so its all updated automatically while leaving windows the top choice? No manual intervention required beyond clicking "install updates"?
Also, is it possible to JUST have the Windows and Ubuntu choices, no Ubuntu recovery, memtest, alternative(older) kernels for Ubuntu, etc in the grub menu?
Ever since installing 10.04 my fonts won't work. I've installed MS True Type every possible way I can and they still won't work.
After installing they seem fine in all applications, except on the internet. Both FF and Chrome can't seem to read (MSTT) fonts, at all. Every website I open fonts are displayed the same as before I install MS True Type.
I have a server that NFS exports the /home directory out to other computers. On the desktop they all work great, but on a wireless laptop, this is where the problem occurs. The wireless enables after the person logs in, rendering the NFS export /home useless on the laptops.Is there anyway to have the wireless enable correctly on the boot so that NFS can mount properly at boot also?I'm using Fedora 11 (32bit) with a wireless router that has a security of WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES]. I could switch to some of the older versions if necessary to get this working.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI just installed ubutnu 9.10 and just installed samba. I edited the config files to workgroup to dhome which is the work group all my windows comptuer uses to share files. I want to share files and also be able to access files off my windows computers. I got onne windows 2000 that has a username needed to be typed in to access it. the rest is accessable. In the config file. I uncommented the security= user thing. I now tried to access the network but still fails.
Here is what I can see. when I go to places and click network I see windows network and click it it will say dhome and Workgroup. when I click on the dhome folder it takes a while and then gives me the error saying sorry didnt' get a list from the server. what do I need to do to access the network?
Once I updated to 10.04 I had some problems with my themes, but updated it and it works fine now. BUT, in firefox, 3.6.3 it looks like this:

I've been trying to get full video card support for the following card Radeon HD 2400 XT Im running the new 10.04 and I cant seem to get the 3d stuff to work properly with compiz When I go to Administration - Hardware drivers it recommends the ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver. Even after getting that installed I still cant get Normal compiz to work. I dont know if it is the driver or some other configuration.

I have created the passwords file with htpasswd and defiantly have the right password for bob. However, when I try to log in the box just comes up over and over again and never authenticates. What am I doing wrong? I'm a newbie, so please bear with me if I've missed something really stupid.
I am trying to install some packages in a ubuntu 8.10 server, however, apt-get doesn't work (I get several 'not found' errors). Is there any way to do that? I know this version is probably not supported anymore but I can't just format a customer server because it's OS is outdated...I just can't put my sources.list on it because I am on ubuntu 10.10 and it would download updates for the wrong OS probably causing a huge damage on the old one.

The panel keep the status of searching with nothing return. While i click the installed software, the right panel show nothing but the icon showing processing. I'm new to ubuntu, I had some experience before with mandriva.Most things work properly but there is a strange problem with the mouse (USB), and more precisely with that little wheel which stands between the two buttons. Turning it when the pointer is on some web page (using firefox) I expect the page to scroll. So I turn the wheel in one direction and the page scroll up. I have tried grub, grub2 (from sbo) and lilo; nothing I install into MBR will boot my slackware installation, I have to use the boot USB stick every time.

I did: ./grub.SlackBuild as su.
The install went on for a long time and I saw warnings etc flash by.
I don't know if it has installed properly. I tried it before and it destroyed my grub menu. I managed to recover grub through LMDE and now, I am back for more!
Is there any way to tell if this app is installed properly before I run grubconfig?
I am running ubuntu 9.10 on a dell mini 10v. I am experienced in running themes and xsplashes, but for some reason i can not successfully install pointers. I drag and drop the pointer themes to the appearance window found from System>Prefrences>Appearances. When i click customize i see that the pointers i instatlled are there, however when i choose them it doesn't work properly, if i go over text or resize a window i see the new pointers but the main pointer always stays the default white.

Still to this day the PDF functions found available (or should I say unavailable) (whether using either EVINCE or ACROREAD) for this O/S will not properly function in allowing you to CONSISTENTLY complete a PDF IRS form on their website, print and then save that completed IRS form to the hard drive of your computer. This is sort of ridiculous! Yes, I have report this as a bug NUMEROUS times and it is still not fixed.
