Ubuntu :: GRUB 2 Not Loading Due To Removing "broken" USB
Nov 19, 2010
First of all, the title is wrong. It's supposed to say "broken Ubuntu installation", not USB. Okay, so I have read a dozen threads, but none of them have offered me a solution: I was supposed to install Ubuntu 10.10 alongside Windows. I got stuck on the keyboard selection screen, and had to abort and install again. Then I booted from the Ubuntu USB and used GParted to delete the broken Ubuntu 10.10 installation, and the swap associated with this. The next time I rebooted, GRUB 2 was gone. I got a saying:
Code: error: no such partition grub rescue> A lot of searches on Google has not been satisfying, and the most results I get are "How to fix GRUB 2 after installing Windows", which is not my problem. I tried some of the "solutions" I found, most of them did nothing, but I did

When I try and boot my Debian computer I get the messages: Grub Loading stage1.5. Grub loading, please wait... Error 15 Is there any way of recovering from this - or is it simply a fresh install? I was attempting an upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze and despite a few hurdles it looked like it was all happening. Got the new kernel loading, and the new grub. It looked as though grub2 was working so I ran the grub-remove-legacy-support command (something like that) and now my computer won't boot grub or Linux.
I'm assuming the MBR on my harddrive is lost, however I don't know what state the partition is in. I'm guessing that maybe this has been lost as well. I tried a few tools from the Ultimate Boot CD but nothing here was able to re-install my grub or boot from any partition or even mount my file-system. I'm fearing the worst but would like it confirmed before I blow it all away with a new install.

Ubuntu 10.04 not loading. Sticks at GRUB Loading message.
Read the other threads re OS not loading and GRUB. The talk about code goes over my head.
Local techie says the hardware is good. Tried reloading Ubuntu from CD. Tried loading the unmentionable OS.
Tried using Spotmau Powersuite.

I installed KDE but decided to remove it after a while as I wasn't using it and its application were redundant on my Gnome desktop. I followed Psychocats' guide for "pure Ubuntu" but after rebooting, Ubuntu just hangs on the loading screen (or during 'checking battery state'). I tried booting in recovery mode but I'm unable to navigate the menu: when I press a direction key it alternates between the menu and the Ubuntu loading screen. Several other keys do the same thing, while the rest do nothing.

Came across a broken link during updating system (Python). So I came across advise which I followed and though I had fixed the problem by removing the broken (python) Only to find I no longer have access to the Desktop.
This is what I have done so far:
Booted to Recovery
Logged in as the user.
Ran the following to reinstall desktop:-
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
All seem well, but now it wants conf. So I have ran the following after rebooting:
sudo dpkg --configure -a
But still no joy, as when the system reboots it stops at the splash screen desktop ubuntu and seem to be trying to boot to the desktop. But no joy.

I had a 400GB hard drive fail on me today that was part of an lvm2 logical volume made up of it and 3x1TB hard drives. I did a partial mount of the lv to assess the damage, and it wasn't bad. All the important stuff is either on the other disks or backed up. So, I want to reduce the lv and remove this disk from the vg.

I upgraded my Ubuntu 8.04 LTS server to 10.04 LTS - rebooted and things ran good. I knew I had a few problems, but DHCP and DNS were booting up and working fine for me.I went to take a look at Webmin, but apparently that's been removed from support for Ubuntu 10.04 - so I thought, I'll use eBox. I realized that Ebox didn't have the network module turned on, so I tried to turn it on. I found out the installation was missing scriptaculous, so I got that and installed that and then turned on the network module.I then rebooted the machine - and now nothing. It hangs when I get to the load for Apache. I would like to disable the network module for eBox, but can't find documentation for how to do that from the command line - which I have to use because the damn box won't boot and I'm running from a Live CD.

My Server runs "fine", then I type init 6 for rebooting or some cron job initiates Init 6 and my system stops in grub at: GRUB loading stage1.5. Error 18 After another Ctrl+Alt+Del the system boots as if anything happened. this is why I doubt that it's an issue of too big HDD or BIOS.

Viewing any source on the Web results in partial loading of data followed by broken up multiple lines. It is occurring now with this post. Paging down I get three lines of "submit new thread" until at the bottom are multiple lines (no characters) after "forum rules". I put it to my network provider who cannot come up with any idea of what may cause it. It cannot be the hardware as the same condition exists on two PC's. Both are on 11.2.

I have an Ubuntu Jaunty server with 4 x 1 TB Hitachi SATA Hard drives and a 4GB IDE Flash Drive. I installed the root file system to the IDE Flash Drive and setup the 4 x 1 TB Hard Drives as a RAID 5 for the home partition (I actually allotted 3 Gigs on each drive as swap space as well). My problem occurs however when I restart my computer after the server installation. Grub doesn't load fully and I am left with a "GRUB_" message on the screen. My root partition is ext3 and I have also tried the same configuration with a boot partition as well on the IDE drive to no avail.

I am thinking the GRUB 2 more functionality was achieved at the price of presenting a user with what I experience as Byzantian mangle of default loaded templates, almost designed to make me give up and leave the defaults.menu.lst is no more - its now /boot/grub/grub.cfg DON'T edit it! /etc/grub.d has the new stuff. These are not just a list of boot-up choices anymore. It requires one to be a programmer. One called 20_memtest86+ is not really to be meddled with. I tried simply making it non-executable.The last choice, 40_custom, allows to add entries only - not quite what we wanted to do.

I've recently installed Vmware on Vista and I am using that to run Linux. I prefer this method over duel booting as I can quickly switch between the two OSes. So here is what I would like to do.
1) Remove swap partition (not needed).
2) Remove Linux and format partition to NTFS for windows use.
3) Remove Grub.
What I don't want to do.
1) Reinstall Windows Vista (Lots of programs installed).

Since I've been using Ubuntu, I've noticed that new entries for Ubuntu (the same but with the final number changed) occasionally appear in the Grub 2 boot loader. I'm talking about the first two entries in this picture, compared with the third and fourth entries here:Two questions:1. What are these entries? They appear to simply be the same OS but different versions. Are they generated when Ubuntu updates?

I just joined the forum today. I'm not a linux beginner per se (about 4 years experience, now running Ubuntu Lucid on my laptop and windoze-free) and I built the desktop PC I'm typing this on six years ago. However, this is my first HTPC build and my first KnoppMyth install, and I've probably done something foolish.
This was an attempt at a fresh KnoppMyth 5.5 install on a virgin system. Hardware details:
MB: GIGABYTE|GA-880GMA-UD2H R
CPU: AMD|PH II X4 925 AM3 RT
RAM: 2Gx2|GSKILL F3-10666CL7D-4GBRH
HD: 1T|WD 7K 64M SATAIII WD1002FAEX - OEM
CD: BLU-RAY BURNER LG | WH10LS30 OEM - OEM
[Code]..
Basically, I just wish I had never bothered with KM5.5 and I want a do-over to go back to the beginning and put the LinHES 6.03 CD in and just do the installation. Since I can't do this, I'd like to at least be able to wipe everything I did and start fresh. Recall that I couldn't boot from CDROM even before I made the daft remove of LILO. The only time I successfully booted from CD was the very first time I turned on the machine to install KM5.5

Basically this is my problem:
1.) I want to remove Ubuntu and Grub and have only Windows XP on my PC again. (Remember the good old days?)
2.) I want to put the Ubuntu partitions back into Windows partition. I need the space.
3.) I can't use an XP disc because I don't have one. (No. Neither does anyone else I know.)
4.) FIXMBR isn't working... am I doing something wrong and what other options do I have?
5.) Does anyone know how do this without removing all my files on the XP? I can't afford to backup everything on my XP. I CAN'T!

I have Karmic installed, but still using old grub from Jaunty. I decided to get rid of my Vista dual boot so I used gparted, deleted the partitions and moved and enlarged my Ubuntu ones. Grub then didn't work, presumably because I deleted the MBR. I then installed Opensuse 11.2, which I assume still uses old grub too. This gave an Opensuse option which worked, and a Karmic option which took me to the Karmic bootloader, but Karmic did not load. I then tried some instructions to repair grub using the Ubuntu installer, installing grub to my extended partition. This tells me there is no operating system found. I then tried following the instructions at [URL].
My fdisk -l looks like:
dev/sda4 * Extended partition
dev/sda5 Ubuntu /
dev/sda6 Ubuntu /home

my computer screwed up and the MBR or GRUB was screwed up, so I got my Windows 7 repair disk and repaired the MBR. Then I needed grub back so I could boot into Ubuntu so I went and looked for something to just install grub and found this Auto Super GRUB Disk (ASGD) thing. So I installed it and then it appeared on the windows boot manager menu when I started up and I went into it and installed grub again. Then when I booted back into windows, it asked me if I wanted to remove ASGD and I clicked yes. Ever since, the ASGD entry has not been removed from my boot menu for some stupid reason. What happens is the computer starts and goes into GRUB which is what I want and then if I go into Windows 7, it will then come up with another menu asking whether to boot into Windows 7 or the ASGD, even though ASGD isn't there anymore. I can still boot into windows, but this extra menu that comes up every time is starting to **** me off. I've tried EasyBCD and the entry does not come up on there.
