Ubuntu Networking :: B43 Inactive When Computer Shut Down And Restarted

Feb 22, 2011

I have v 10.10 and I had to hook up with ethernet cord to download and activate both broadcom b43 and sta drivers. Once they were both downloaded and activated my wireless worked fine. (Also I have an hp mini 210-1000 if that helps.) After unplugging my laptop and using it, if it dies or if things are running really funky and it seems like it could use a restart, or on one of the many occasions where I am not going to be using it for a few days and just shut it down, as soon as I start it back up.

I find that sta driver still says activated under system - admin - additional drivers, however the b43 now says inactive, and my wireless wont connect to any router, even though it can detect them, until I connect with the ethernet cord and redo the whole driver activation for both, and then restart. This happens every time, and although I don't often take my laptop out of my room, my router is away from my desk, so this is a major inconvenience when i have work to do, or if I were to ever take it out somewhere with me.

Software :: Computer Restarted Itself / Why Is So?

Sep 16, 2010

I have been running some stuff for a number of weeks on my computer at work and last night it seems to have restarted itself meaning part of the stuff has been lost.

Below is the part of the syslog file when it seems to have happened, is there anything else where I can look for evidence on the computer for reasons as to why it restarted coded...

So the computer starts again at 05:10:42? How can I find out why as I don't want it to happen again?

Ubuntu :: Disable Stand-by - Computer Inactive For 5 Minutes Goes Black And Then Have To Enter My Password ?

May 23, 2010

I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 and now if I leave my computer inactive for 5 minutes it goes black and then I have to enter my password. This is really annoying when I am streaming videos or watching movies. I have gone through all the admin and preferences and can't find how to turn this off or even how to change the time for going into stand-by. I would expect it to be in the power management but it isn't there.

Ubuntu :: Can't Shut Down Computer With GUI?

Mar 17, 2010

OK, so basically my problem is that I can't log out, shut down, or restart my computer through the GUI. The thing is, it used to work. Note: this started happening right after I put in the lock / logout widget, but it's really a pain to have to go through the Kickoff menu to lock the screen each time, and leaving my files, online accounts, and what's on my screen open to anyone who wants to snoop is not an option. I may have to just suck it up and lock the screen the old-fashioned way, but only as a last resort.

Configuration: An older Gateway (idk the exact specs) desktop machine with Windows XP and Kubuntu 9.10 Karmic (dual-boot)

Ubuntu :: Computer Does Not Shut Down Normally

May 2, 2010

Since a long time I have a problem when shutting down my computer. I have ubuntu 8.04 installed, and I do install regularly all the updates including new kernels, etc. Here are the symptoms: After pressing "shutdown" (or issuing a command in terminal) it happens (always) that the screen is still working at the end of shutdown process (ubuntu progress bar is at minimum and it stays visible). Also, CPU fan is still working. However, power and HDD lights go off.

The only possible way to shutdown computer at that moment is holding power button for 5 seconds. However, restart works OK. Now, I am sure that shutdown worked earlier fine, but unfortunately I cannot remember when the problems started: either when I installed 8.04 or after installing some of the kernel updates. Configuration: Asus 5pgl-mx motherboard, 1.5 GB ram, nvidia graphic card (sorry, not sure what model), etc.

Ubuntu :: 'shut Down Computer' Options

May 3, 2010

I seem to get different options depending on the user. On my main, admin user, when I click on the `power button` icon on the right of my taskbar, I get a choice of:

shutdown
restart
suspend
hibernate

and if I want to log off I click on the start button.but when I log on as my `guest` user, who has next to no permissions, I get log off, switch user etc on the `power button` icon. It would be nice to have all these options on the `power button` icon on my admin user. Can this be achieved? Why are they different?

Ubuntu :: Audio Down And Computer Won't Shut Down?

Jun 11, 2010

I'm going to guess this has to do with me updating yesterday, as there were no problems before that. Which kind of ticks me off, because I came back to ubuntu because I got tired of micromanaging updates in arch.

Audio is down. The volume can be changed, but it isn't reflected in the volume icon at the top of the screen. Sound preferences show the only output available is a dummy speaker. When I try to restart or shut down, it just logs me out of my profile and takes me to the login screen. As always, if you need more info, just tell me where to find it.

Ubuntu :: Sudo Command Does Not Shut Computer Down

Sep 8, 2010

Code:
sudo shutdown now
command does not shut the computer down

When the command is typed a, all the programs are closed and proceeds to shut down. But after some time, screen gets stuck(plymouth animation stops moving). But the computer is still working. Fan is running , Power LED is on. LED showing hard disk usage blinks at equal time interval. There is no problem in shutting down using the button on panel. So I suppose it is not a hardware problem. More over there is no problem in windows. The graphics card is Nvidia Geforce 7300GS. I am using proprietary Nvidia driver.

Ubuntu Installation :: Computer Doesn't Shut Down

Dec 28, 2010

I have installed Linux Mint 10 on a HP Pro Book 4720s, see here: [URL]

After the installation I wanted to shut down the PC and used the button in the menu. Then appears the Linux Mint Screen and nothing happens.

I could just shut down the PC by pressing the power button for a few seconds, but that isn't a solution.

Ubuntu Installation :: Computer Shut Off During Upgrade?

Aug 2, 2011

Last night I decided to upgrade to Natty Narwhal 11.04 from MM10.10. I tried to leave it to install overnight.

Some bright spark turned off the power supply to my computer.

I don't know exactly what stage the installation was at, but it must have been installing the upgrade at least, because I'm now locked out of my computer.

Boot up progresses until the ubuntu loading screen. At this point is says,

'Ubuntu 10.10'

The disk drive for / is not ready yet or not present Continue to wait; or press s to skip mounting or M for manual recovery.

(If I press 'S', it says something like 'cannot find /tmp folder')

I don't know if the upgrade installation was completed, but I suspect not, because the power was turned off just an hour into the installation. Also it still tries to load Ubuntu 10.10.

Anything I can do besides formatting for a fresh 11.04 install? If only to save some files?

I had been trying to get alsa to start in the "runlevel" section yesterday, could I have messed something up in there causing this?

Brand-new to Linux. Using a computer with openSUSE 11.3 (64-bit) freshly installed. Install went flawlessly without any kind of error messages.

Hardware used: MSI X58 Eclipse, Intel i7-920, 6 GB memory, Seagate 500 GB SATA.
openSUSE is the only OS installed.

After the install is finished, all programs work fine. HOWEVER when I try to shut down/restart the computer nothing happens! I basically have to use the power off button to shut down...

Debian :: How To Exit Windows Mgr (Cannot Shut Down Computer)

Apr 22, 2010

I could be wrong, but I swear that when I first considered switching to Linux a few years back the gnome windows manager's main menu had an option to exit said windows manager. There is obviously no such option now. Looking at some other forums, it seems that you can START gnome properly... but to exit the windows manager you have to kill processes? If I want to close down the Gnome WM without rebooting the computer - say, to just try TWM alone, or some other WM - there must be a 'legal' way to do it.

Fedora :: Computer Won't Shut Off Unless - 'turn Black' And Become Unresponsive

Mar 3, 2011

My computer won't shut off unless I just hold down the power button. Everytime I try System > Shut Off it just turns off, then restarts. My computer screen will sometimes just 'turn black' and become unresponsive, and I have to shut it down and restart. (The longest I waited was a few minutes with no response. How do I get customized mouse pointers? When I download something and 'extract' it, how do I know which file I'm supposed to open after I click 'show the files'? I've downloaded a few things and extracted them but I'm assuming I must do more, since they are not on my applications. Which is the best browser to use on Fedora? I love Opera, but for some reason my internet is twice as slow on Opera as it is on Firefox or Chrome?

Fedora Networking :: No Internet Connectivity - Status Inactive PAN0

Mar 3, 2009

I'm new to Fedora 10 and still a newbie with Linux in general. I installed F10 on an old PC I had....and the install went well..however, I'm having Internet Connectivity issues.

Here is what I did so far:
Did an ifconfig command and I have the following:
pan0 Link encap: Ethernet HWaddr D2:30:36:AF:61:95
inet6 addr: fe80::d030:36ff:feaf:6195/64 Scope: Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

TX packets:30 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes: 0 (0.0 b) Tx bytes: 8676 (8.4 KiB)

When I go to the Network Configuration Panel I see the following:
Status: Device: Nickname: Type:
Inactive pan0 pan0 Ethernet

Tried to activate and it states Activating network device pan0, please wait... determining IP information for pan0.... A few minutes pass by then. It indicates it failed. Cannot activate network device pan0! I have disabled the Controlled by NetworkManger and enabled the Activate device when computer starts.

CentOS 5 Networking :: 5.4 Freezes When Clicking On Inactive Linked Folder

Apr 16, 2010

i encountered the following:

situation:

1 server with centos 5.4 running 1 client with centos 5.4 - gnome running thin ethernet network

on my client desktop i have a link to a shared folder on the server. this works fine.

to the problem: after working with this (using the link and seeing it working) i shutted down the server from my client (in a terminal screen, using ssh) the terminal screen signalled the server going down and the connection ended. the linked folder on the client desktop changed its icon fine.

after that i clicked on the changed icon (of the link that was not a working link any more) and the client machine froze.... no reaction any more. i could only end the session by >ctrl-alt-f#< , log in and shutdown.

Q: is it normal Centos is that angry when you click such a link?
