Fedora Networking :: WLAN Card Goes Inactive

Fedora Installation :: "Error Configuring Network Interface" Halts F13 Upgrade With Atheros Card

Jun 6, 2010

After an online upgrade from f11 to f13, on rebooting the setup attempts to configure the wireless connection and fails with a not very illuminating "error configuring your network interface" notice, offering no option but to go back and try again, which of course fails again with the same error.

Wireless card is a D-link that works fine with the ath5k driver in f11.

how I can get out of this vicious cycle and proceed with booting the upgrade?

Fedora Networking :: Flaky Internet Connectivity - Network Inactive In NM Panel

May 28, 2011

I just installed F15 on a laptop that previous had F12 working well. During install, it finds my wireless card and seems to set it up fine. The full install ran with the wireless active without any problem that I could see. Now, when I start up, I see Network Manager tells me that the wlan is active, but it doesn't show my specific network. If I click on the NM tray icon and open up the panel, my network is shown but it is not "active".

I can double click on it and it will become active - shows the little globe next to the antenna. This works fine for about 2 web pages worth and then FireFox 4 stops being able to find web pages. If I go back to the panel, double click on my wireless network (which looks like it is active already), and reactivate it, I can get the page I was looking for in FireFox, but within a couple of minutes it will stop.

Likewise with yum, while I'm installing software, I'll occasionally get errors like this:
[URL]: [Errno 14] curl#6 - "Couldn't resolve host"
If I reactivate my wireless network in the NM panel, it continues fine. Other computers/phones connected to this network seem to work fine. Is NM known to be problematic in F15?

Hardware :: New Network Card Not Mapping To Ethernet Interface?

Feb 21, 2011

I've added a 2nd ethernet network card into my linux box. After I installed it the box recognized the new card and mapped it to eth1, as I expect. I then configured the addresses and routing for my eth0 and eth1 interface. Since then I had shutdown my box. When I next started my linux box up only eth0 was present.`ifconfig -a` only displays eth0, but `lspci` lists both cards. How can i permanently map the new pci card to eth1?

Code:

scattaneo@unthread:~$ ifconfig -a
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:1a:a0:8c:61:49
inet addr:192.168.2.108 Bcast:192.168.2.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

Security :: Mount 2 Network Interface Card (NIC) And Make A Bridge

Apr 1, 2010

Actually i'm doing an ingenior training in SAGEM company, well i'm trying to develop an application which is able ti disturb the IP Network,my idea was is to mount 2 Network Interface Card (NIC) and make a bridge to pass the IP flow and to exploit the firewall Netfilter using iptables command. The application has to import a text file containing a binary array like this one:

0 1 0 : 0 corresponds to iptables -p ip ACCEPT
1 1 1 : 1 corresponds to iptables -p ip DROP
0 0 1

==> So the expected result is to have 5 ip datagrams dropped

My idea was: if 0 --> iptables -A FORWARD -p ip -m limit --limit-burst 1 -j ACCEPT
if 1 --> iptables -A FORWARD -p ip -m limit --limit-burst 1 -j DROP

The problem was: After executing the application and parsing the text file,
with iptables -L -v: i have

Code:
-A FORWARD -p ip -m limit --limit-burst 1 -j ACCEPT
-A FORWARD -p ip -m limit --limit-burst 1 -j DROP
-A FORWARD -p ip -m limit --limit-burst 1 -j ACCEPT

which is logic, but when i sniff with wireshark i find more packets are dropped(6,7 or 8 are dropped), like i had put more DROP rules. and sometimes i found the exact value(usually 5 dropped).

I simply cannot get this to work, has anybody managed it?

My problem is related to tuncfg I believe. I make the modification to the source of tuncfg to change ifconfig to /sbin/ifconfig. If I run hamachi start debug I get the following output:

Red Hat / Fedora :: Multiple Interface On Network Using Same NIC For Communication

Apr 6, 2011

My setup is as follows,
Machine-1
- Two network interface cards on same network with different MAC say MAC-1 and MAC-2
- IP 10.209.193.130 and 10.209.193.131
- Firewall IP tables empty iptables -F
Machine-2
- One NIC with IP 10.209.193.135
switch
- both machines are connected to common switch and can ping happily.

Problem:
when I send ping request from Machine-2 to Machine-1 arp tables are initialized for IP MAC pair. Surprisingly both IP are get resolved to one MAC i.e MAC-1. general observation is, MAC of first interface which has route in kernel route table. I cross checked this on Suse11 and RHEL5 same result. but In suse10 I am getting expected behavior [i.e IP1-MAC1 and IP2-MAC2 pair in arp cache]. Do any one know why kernel is using same NIC for two different interfaces?

Output for Suse11 and RHEL 5
Code: ? (10.209.193.131) at 00:0c:29:34:e7:6f [ether] on eth3

Red Hat / Fedora :: Determine Network Interface That Will Be Used To Send Packet For An IP?

Apr 9, 2010

I'm writing to you because I encountered the following problem. My program displayes all network interfaces that are available in the system, but I would like to adda functionality in which a user can enter a destination address IP (ex. the IP address of the Google search engine) and will get information which network interface will be used to send it. As I know it is associated with reading information from routing table in the system. Maybe you know the API (functions/methods) which I could use to do it in RedHat ? I program in C/C++, but if you know how to do it in other programming languages (Java, Perl, Python) I will be grateful for any information.

I use chrony on my laptop thinking it would be better for it than ntp because I'm frequently connecting and disconnecting from wireless cafe access points and going in and out of suspend mode. But I've also noticed that if chrony is started before the access point is connected it never syncs to the time servers. I have to manually restart it via the service command after I connect. This doesn't seem right to me, if chrony fails to find a network at start time, doesn't it periodically try again ?

Networking :: Configure A Network Route To A Host For Testing Network Interface?

Aug 30, 2010

today I tried to configure a network route to a host for testing my network interface. Code: route add 192.168.1.15 eth0 As I have to eth interfaces and both interface got their IP from DHCP (192.168.1.11 and 192.168.1.12) and are in the same subnet, I shut the other interface down:

Code: ifconfig eth1 down Then I tried to test the interface by doing a ping to 192.168.1.15.
Problem: When I unplug the cable from eth0 (and eth1 is still plugged) the ping still works. Somehow my linux (it's debian) powers up again eth0 and pings over this port.

How can I stop my linux doing this. I just want to have the route added only on the one interface - not the other. Is it maybe some case of a default-gateway?

Fedora Installation :: Why Mark Vista Partition Inactive

Oct 17, 2009

I first noticed this behaviour with Fedora 9, so I guess the install process is behaving as intended. However, when I install grub in the linux boot partition, SDA 6 with my current configuration, I would like my Vista partion to remain active. I use EasyBCD in Vista to control booting, as I have more Vista systems than linux systems. Currently, I have to boot the Vista install DVD after every Fedora install to do a start up repair on the hard drive. After the Fedora install, the Vista partition is marked inactive and needs to be marked active again. IMHO, if the linux boot loader is loaded in the linux boot partition, the currently active Windows partition should be left active. Unless I'm missing something, the MBR on the drive is going to be pointed at some other partition than the linux partition whenever grub is installed in the linux boot partition instead of the MBR. It's not that hard to activate the Windows partition, but after installing a few F12 alpha snaps and beta TCs and RCs, it's getting annoying. Any chance this can be changed?
