Ubuntu :: How To Force Reinstall Package After Removing
Jun 7, 2010
I'm trying to re-install tomcat6 after removing it and all it's dependencies, but it got corrupt when trying to re-install. I'm on Ubuntu Sever Lucid 10.04 LTS with command line only.
I started with:
Code:
sudo apt-get auto-remove tomcat6
Then I deleted the /etc/tomcat6 directory manually since it contained file settings I didn't want. I assumed it would automatically install the missing files.
Then I tried re-installing tomcat6 as follows:
Code:
sudo apt-get install tomcat6
This yielded an error:
Code:
Setting up tomcat6 (6.0.24-2ubuntu1) ...
chmod: cannot access `/etc/tomcat6/tomcat-users.xml': No such file or directory
dpkg: error processing tomcat6 (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Setting up authbind (1.2.0build3) ...
Errors were encountered while processing:

E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
How are you supposed to completely remove a package and re-install it normally?
So I was messing around trying to uninstall Nibbles and reinstall since I have an issue starting that game and something happened and removed the submenu under Games called "Logic", which had another whole list of games.
Is it possible to reinstall the games package or reinstall the update?I'm thinking more of the lines of a system restore or something so back 2 days from today.
I'm working on a script called "populator". This script will be run on a linux box with the single purpose to download a set of packages (i.e. "ubuntu-desktop" metapackage) to trigger the caching by a deb-proxy. The reason is to pre-cache the proxy in advance, thus reducing the amount of time to install the first production Linux box, not necessarily going to be installed immediately after deb-proxy deployment. As for now, the script is extremely rough and simple:
1. clean the apt-get cache
2. run apt-get install with specified parameters to force reinstall, download only, output urls
3. pass the url list to wget and throw everything in /dev/null
with the specified parameters the script does the job. The only problem regards dependency handling: they are downloaded just the first time, even after apt-cache clean. I need apt-get to re-download dependencies as well. THIS is the real need.
Script follows:
Code:
#!/bin/bash # # Script to pre-populate apt-get proxy for faster later downloads. # It uses apt-get and wget to pull all the specified packages.
I was relieved to read online that I'm not the only first-time Ubuntu user to destroy their system beyond repair and wish to uninstall and reinstall Ubuntu. However, all the tutorials I can find on how to do it are for users who have a dual operating system on their computer, especially XP and Vista. Ubuntu is my sole operating system (I decided to give it a try when my computer crashed and needed to be rebooted with a new operating system).
Is there a way to just remove my entire Ubuntu operating system from my laptop and reinstall it? I've already downloaded Ubuntu onto my jump drive and it's all set to reinstall. Tutorials claim that restarting my laptop with the jump drive inserted in my laptop will automatically startup the Ubuntu installation process but it doesn't, and I'm sure it's because I still have Ubuntu on my laptop.
Stats: Gateway NV52 Formerly Windows Vista, but that was removed and Ubuntu (Linux) is now the sole operating system Gnome Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
I have installed the newest version of Peppermint Ice (Ubuntu derivative) on my Eee PC 701's internal HD and would like to get some more space on the drive (2GB total) by removeing packages like hunspell-en-ca, but synaptic warns me that language-support-writing-en will be removed. How can I force removal of this and similar packages like myspell-en-au, without uninstalling English language support?
how to remove a dbvis package as it causing yum to break. I have googled and searched the forums. I found this [URL]. I modified the python script that yum uses to find the offending package. This is the symptoms when i run yum...
Code:
[root@localhost ~]# yum -d 10 list Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/yum", line 29, in <module>
I have the suspicion that the latest gdm update (2.28.1-0ubuntu2.2) broke something because the login screen isn't displayed anymore on my desktop. My question is the following:How can I revert an update or force a package version via command line? It's pretty straight forward via Synaptic but I only have access to the recovery command line so that is not really an option.
I was working on my flash drive install of Ubuntu, when I squashfsed my /usr. Long story short, I some how ended up with a working /usr, but with a few packages marked as installed, but not having its components installed (emacs). When I try to remove emacs (emacs23-nox), it gives me numerous errors about files (all relating to emacs) not existing (all in /usr). Thus my questions are as follows:
1) Is there a way to force the removal without it caring about missing packages?
-OR-
2) Is there a way to reload which packages are installed by checking which files exist, etc?
i did something totally stupid. i changed the whole system to russian. tried to reinstall english again, but everytime i go to the language settings (Yazyk i tekst) and select english (Anglijskij) under the installation menu (ustanovka yazykov), i press the install button and than it just freezes and and window goes gray. is there a possible way to install the package from the command line?
I need to remove libgl1-mesa-swx11, as after I installed it, it has slowed down all my graphics. However, in SPM, it says in order to remove it, I have to remove most of my system, it seems as though it's "dependencies" involve everything to do with graphics, which I was running fine and much better before. So, how do I remove this package without removing dependencies?
I want to remove a keyring package I installed from a repository that I no longer want to use. However, I cannot remove it:
# apt-get remove -y --force-yes debian-xray-keyring Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done
The following packages will be removed: debian-xray-keyring 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 130 not upgraded. After this operation, 49.2 kB disk space will be freed. (Reading database ... 181076 files and directories currently installed.)

For backwards testing reasons I had to uninstall my php package. Now that I've done I need to reinstall php 5.3.x. What is the full package name to reference as I'm coming up blank looking for a reference. I normally use yum or apt-get to install things.
I have a linux server with RHEL5.4 which has a pkg which is not properly installed. I have been asked to remove the pkg so they can re-install it properly but it fails at %postun. this is what I get:
[root@server1 ~]# rpm --noscript --notriggers -e first_local1_Install_First3.133.v1-3 error: %postun(first_local1_Install_First3.133.v1-3.noarch) scriptlet failed, exit status 1 [root@server1 ~]# uname -a Linux server1 2.6.18-164.el5 #1 SMP Tue Aug 18 15:51:48 EDT 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
I forced the install of graph-tool package [URL]. Now it is of course tagged as broken, so update manager wont do anything. But I want to accept it, I know it is not really broken. (In fact, graph-tool_xxx.deb asks for libcgal4. squeeze only has libcgal5, so I am betting this is not an issue, as far as graph-tool is concerned.)
I removed using yast the package "ssl-cert". At this point yast2 started throwing the error:
Code: Download failed: Download (curl) error for 'https://nu.novell.com/repo/repoindex.xml?cookies=0&credentials=NCCcredentials': Error code: Unrecognized error Error message: SSL certificate problem, verify that the CA cert is OK. Details: error:14090086:SSL routines:SSL3_GET_SERVER_CERTIFICATE:certificate verify failed
And of course a redownload and install of ssl-cert is not possible,I get the same error So I tried downloading and installing the openssl package by hand, but still I got nowhere Does anyone knows how to reinstall this ssl-cert package again??
How do most experienced Fedora users remove packages with large number of dependencies?
I know that the question is as old as yum, but still I can't find solution. There is package-cleanup tool, which supposed to do the job with "--leaves" key, but it doesn't seem to work. Right now I have F12 installed. I installed rosegarden with `yum install rosegarden`. Then I removed it with `yum remove rosegarden`. If I understand right, `package-cleanup --leaves` must show all of 12 dependencies that was installed with rosegarden, but it shows none of them (although it shows few packages). Is this a bug? For years I used Ubuntu and Debian and I was completely satisfied with apt.
So I tried out Libreoffice and want to revert back to Openoffice for the time being. I uninstalled Libreoffice from ubuntu software center and now I can't reinstall openoffice from USC. i get this error:
" Package dependencies cannot be resolved: This error could be caused by required additional software packages which are missing or not installable. Furthermore there could be a conflict between software packages which are not allowed to be installed at the same time. " does anyone have a way of fixing this? edit: i've tried sudo apt-get install openoffice.org in terminal but it didn't work as well (i'm total noob)
I need to know if there is a way to command slackpkg to reinstall all installed packages...?I dont think there is but also wanted to know if I could somehow edit scripts, etc to enable this.I need this because as many know here I make variations of livecd's and I have injured one of my installs when I ran a script that I shouldn't have and it deleted several directories under /etc usr/lib and /usr/bin.I have no idea exactly what was deleted and thus I wish to reinstall all installed packages. There must be a way to do this without the borish method of manually reinstalling hundreds of pkgs.Is there a way to grep/ var /log/packages and say reinstall all?
In an attempt to minimize my system when I mark for removal libcups2 using synaptic it asks to install 7 not authenticated packages, however if I choose mark for complete removal it asks to install the same 7 packages and remove every single installed package from epiphany to gimp to zenmap. Any ideas as to whats going on with that?
Does anyone know of a fedora package or script that can non-destructively parse a folder hierarchy of maildirs and strip out all attachments into a separate folder?
I am trying to install the apr port on freeBSD and I get the following error:
Code:
===> Checking if devel/apr already installed ===> An older version of devel/apr is already installed (apr-db42-1.2.8_2) You may wish to ``make deinstall'' and install this port again by ``make reinstall'' to upgrade it properly.
I have installed Ubuntu 11.04, 64 bit and now I am trying to install/configure MFC-7420 scanner part (printer works fine)I tried to follow the steps listed at http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-590793.html, but I don't have etc / udev / rules.d/45-libsane.rules file to edit and can not continue with the remaining steps of the guide.
I also tried to follow the steps provided by the Brother Solution Center http:[url].... I have downloaded brscan2 64 bit and installed without error but when I tried to install the brscan-skey-0.2.1-3.amd64.deb using >sudo dpkg -i --force-all brscan-skey-0.2.1-3.amd64.deb I get the following error:
************************************************** ************************************************** sudo dpkg -i --force-all brscan-skey-0.2.1-3.amd64.deb [sudo] password for aUser: dpkg: warning: overriding problem because --force enabled:[code].....
Which dependencies am I missing? or What am I doing wrong?
I installed F13 on a system by doing and install from an F12 Live USB key and then doing an update do F13. Unfortunately the upgrade failed to update a package because it thought the F12 package was more recent. I can't just do a clean install of F13 because I'm in Massachusetts and the system is in Chicago so I need to be able to fix this remotely.
I tried to install Google Chrome. I'm getting the following error, package nss-softokn-freebl-3.12.4-19.fc12.x86_64 (which is newer than nss-softokn-freebl-3.12.4-17.fc13.i686) is already installed As you can see the F12 package is -19 and the F13 package is -17 which is confusing yum. Is there a way to force yum to install the F13 package?
I'm using 'Adobe Flash plug-in 10.3.183.4ubuntu0.11.04.1', installed from the package repos on kubuntu, and since the last update, it has broken all flash functionality in both rekonq and firefox.I have tried removing and reinstalling the package multiple times, both with and without the browsers open. Can anyone suggest a way to restoring functionality?
i installed kernel 2.6.34 to fix my lid closing issue, and that went great. but now when i go to reinstall my broadcom i get this error. Code: Reading package lists... what i did was, remove evolution mail from synaptic, what i wanted to do was just remove the indicator applet from the task bar. i read a bunch of bad stuff about removing evolution from synaptic vs just removing the applet.
im worried. did i break anything or put my security at risk. after, i used a command (older) (sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop)to install ubuntu desktop. because i thought that it would fix evolution. then i went to synaptic and installed a package called evolution. i rechecked evolution in applications menu. however, i notice that i have both a checkable evolution and two evolution icons. nothing 'seems' broken. im not sure if it ever was. and evolution calender pops up as normal, as does the the installed plain evolution. they both seems to be an exact copy of the other.
all i really wanted to do was remove the indicator applet. did i make a serious mistake. since ive had ubuntu, ive reformatted a lot because i was worried i made a mistake of some kind. however now im into the more "make a mistake and fix it stage' as im pretty happy with my current desktop and have worked hard to customize it. the command, sudo apt-get remove indicator-messages removed the mail icon. i still am worried that i broke something, or put my security at risk. also, now i have two mail icons. evolution mail and calendar, and another just called evolution.
I recently installed opensuse 11.2 on my laptop which also had windows vista and windows 7, i created a new partition and the installation went smoothly, after i went to boot back into windows 7 i got a blue screen of death, strangely vista boots perfectly.I could just reinstall windows 7 but its a pain to reinstall all my programs and such
I know a bunch of commands and I am comfortable using the terminal, I even set a powerpc server but I can't figure out how to remove epiphany on this new computer I'm setting up. I didn't install anything with tasksel. I installed gnome and xorg afterwards... I load it up and 'startx' just fine. then I check around for the programs that were installed. I lik'em gimp, lot's of utilities. gedit. anyway I find epiphany, which I have already established that I dislike, I immediately go to the root terminal (another nice program that comes with gnome) and type apt-get remove epiphany-browser-data the output says it will be deleting gnome... however I have researched and found these are simpy meta packages that don't really matter.... however under the section that states all the packages that will be removed by autoremove there is a huge list... I doubt these packages are safe to remove. how to remove epiphany without removing a huge amount of probably needed software
