In KPackageKit I can't uncheck the 'Proposed updates' or the 'Unsupported updates' boxes in the 'Kubuntu updates' section of the 'Updates' tab of the 'Software Sources' window (brought up by clicking on the 'Edit Origins' button in the 'Settings' tab of 'KPackageKit'). [URL]

So I just recently installed Ubuntu Lucid Lynx over my old XP system and I have been loving it so far. I did run into a problem though. Shortly after installing Ubuntu, it prompted me to install updates and I did so. After the updates had installed, my computer restarted and the whole desktop theme/look changed to a older looking version of Ubuntu. I really liked the look of Lucid Lynx and have been trying to get it back.

Ubunto 8.4, running on 2nd partition on Apple Intel iMac. Several months ago, following a routine update, I found I could no longer install routine updates. Investigating further, I find
"You don't have permissions to..."
then sudo: /etc/sudoers is owned by gid 1002, should be 0.
That's not me! I am the owner and root user of this computer. How could this get changed? How can I change it back to me? The Linux platform of the computer has not been exposed to the net except for Ubuntu forums and updates. No one else has used this computer.

I'm having a strange problem with Firefox. I like to tab through text boxes rather than clicking on each one. Problem is, I don't really know if it has anything to do with the tabbing honestly, but I'll type in the box I'll get one letter than it will highlight it all on its own and then obviously get replaced with the next letter I type. I can type one letter, press the forward arrow and type another letter then it automatically highlights the 2 letters, etc etc. I'm really not even sure how to stop it, I try clicking in the box and they doesn't seem to do anything. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 with firefox 3.6.6.

Running Jessie 8.2 and Icedove 38.4.0. I just applied some updates and now Icedove only displays the number of unread messages in the folders.
Previously, it displayed the number of unread and the total number of messages in neat columns. Now it is a single number of unread in parens.
Is there any way I can get the display back to the previous format of unread# and total#?

I installed KDE on my Ubuntu laptop and then got rid of it. I used puregnome which worked but I still have weird fonts in Firefox. I tried adjusting the preferences in Firefox but nothing works. How can I revert it back?I did a fresh install (but kept my home directory) and it made no change. I also removed the .mozilla folder entirely and uninstalled/reinstalled Firefox. No change. How can I get this back?

After installing Linux Multimedia Studio the fonts on my firefox4 browser has slightly changed. I remember during the installation that it installed some fonts so maybe it has something to do with that.
The default font settings on my firefox has remained the same but it looks different than before. On certain websites like facebook the main font looks different. I uninstalled LMMS thinking it would bring back the default font settings but it hasnt.
Any ideas how I can bring it back to my default settings on firefox?

The latest Firefox update seemed to override my Slickness Black theme settings for the location bar drop down (where you drop down the bar to see past sites visited. The link under the site name used to be a nice grey and now it's standard weblink blue. Not critical of course but I do personally find this annoying. I tried changing the weblink colors in Firefox but that didn't help. Anyhow have any idea how to get my original color back? It's unreadable in that awful blue.

I use Ubuntu 10.04. I'm not sure what other info is relevant, Gnome, I suppose.
Yesterday I installed wine-1.2 (using Synaptic), in order to be able to build programs for Windows. This in itself seemingly succeeded, but as a result of the installation, fonts in Firefox changed (one can say immediately - when the installation was done, the fonts had changed).
For example, in this forum, the non-monospaced font changed in some way I can't put my finger on. Right now, posts feel less readable, but getting used to it may just be a question of time.
Some other pages (in existing tabs, and when looking them up again) changed the font size, some increased the size, some decreased it. This can be fixed by using Ctrl-+ or Ctrl-- quite easily, but <whine> I would like these kind of changes not to happen at all </whine>.
I uninstalled wine (not removed completely - I don't know what the difference is), but this didn't undo the font change.
The font settings within Firefox (Preferences) don't seem to have been changed.
The point of this post is to ask what may have happened, where such dependencies between fonts are stored, and how to undo the change, in case I'd like to.

Using ubuntu 9.10 Karmic 64 bit
Firefox version: 3.6.9 Mozilla Firefox for Ubuntu canonical - 1.0
about:config is default
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-GB; rv:1.9.2.9) Gecko/20100825 Ubuntu/9.10 (karmic) Firefox/3.6.9
When I access some websites, especially certain forums or atempt to post, the tab seems to be loading but doesn't do anything. If I then exit firefox I cannot ping anything (IP or address) in terminal. If I then open Epiphany it fixes everything until firefox next does this. This is happening from 1 - 10 times an hour and is starting to get to me.

I remember back a few versions, you needed to take ownership of firefox in order for it to get updates and to save your settings. Is this needed in 10.10? Im giving Ubuntu a go again.

I have a dual-boot Compaq CQ60-420US laptop. It can connect wirelessly in Vista without a problem. I have not yet figured out how to connect it wirelessly in Ubuntu (10.04, Lucid), but that's not the problem here. The problem here is on the wired side. Whether I boot in Vista or Ubuntu, I cannot get it to go online. Ubuntu says that the Auto eth2 connection is established; I am able to disconnect and reconnect it normally; but I can't download updates and Firefox can't connect to CNN.com. Likewise, in Vista, diagnostics find no problem; everything seems to be fine; but no connection.
I thought the problem might be the laptop's ethernet port, so I bought a Trendnet TU2-ET100 USB-to-Ethernet adapter. It comes highly recommended; it seems to have installed successfully in Vista; it appears properly in Vista's Network Connections; its lights are blinking appropriately; and Ubuntu tells me that my Auto eth2 connection is established when I connect through that adapter. And yet still no connection to CNN.com and no downloads of updates in either OS.
I wondered if some other circuitry might be at issue, so I sent the laptop back to HP. They claim to have replaced the mobo. The symptoms remain unchanged before and after. I went through an extensive tech support call with HP. The last thing their technician could advise was to power cycle the laptop and router. The ethernet connection itself is good. I can unplug the cable from the laptop's ethernet port or the Trendnet unit, plug it into the desktop computer on which I am typing this note, and I'm connected with no problem.
I thought, well, maybe I have to have the laptop's wireless button on, even when I want to connect via wire, but that hasn't made a difference. I tried installing Windows drivers from the Trendnet website instead of from the CD; no joy. I suspect you will be as stumped as I am. I have gone through a lot of other people's comments. At this point, I am just interested in general possibilities. What, in theory, could be causing this?

After the most recent Firefox update (3.6.6), Flash video has stopped working. I have the Flash player plugin from Adobe (adobe-flashplugin version 10) and it is not working. I have tried uninstalling it and installing the flashplugin-installer package instead, that did not, so I reinstalled the adobe-flashplugin package and still have nothing. All using synaptic package manager.
More specifically, flash videos do not show up at all: ....., anything: just a blank spot on the screen.

Ubuntu Software upgrades indicated that there were some Firefox updates available. While updating, computer screen went blank and froze up. I manually shutdown and after restarting, Ubuntu no longer loads. It goes through some steps but then it goes to a login/password prompt. After putting in a login and password it takes me to, what I think is "Terminal".
I am a newbie, but I love to learn. I'm reading the Pocket Guide right now. I have many questions. What can I do at the "Terminal" prompt? An even better question is: When I have a problem after an install or update, can I do a "recovery" to before the install/update? If I continue to have problems, is there a way to recover the OS without losing saved data?
I'm hoping that I will learn a lot from the Pocket guide. I think that Ubuntu is going to be the OS of the future.
Why does "Ubuntu" still come up as a misspelled word in this text box?

I used ubuntuzilla to install 3.5.2 on my IBM T43 Notebook. I'm using Ubuntu Jaunty with all the newest updates.
But now the update notifier can't stop sending me updates about the OLD firefox. 3.1.? I think... It says "firefox" "firefox-gnome support" etc.
It's really rather annoying, and instead of clicking "update now," I have to filter the old firefox stuff out before I update.
Any way to get that thing to shut up?
Sorry if this has already been posted... kinda slipped my mind to use the search function... but if you don't mind, I'd still like some answers HERE instead of just "USE THE SEARCH, NOOB!" responses.
Just checked... seems to me it hasn't already been posted... unless I'm not searching for the right thing

After installing a number of security updates that were listed in the update manager, I can no longer run the "sudo firefox" command.
I got the error message:No protocol specified cannot open display
I found this thread: [url]
Through which I found that I am able to run "sudo firefox" after running:
HTML Code:
I realize this doesn't give you a lot to go on.
Question: Is there a way to view which updates were last installed on my system?

I recently installed virtual box on debian and after it had finished my terminal informed me that I could remove some "unnecessary" software by use of sudo apt-get autoremove. When I did this, some of the icons on the desktop changed and all of the icons in the drop down menu on the bar at the top of the screen also changed to ordinary folder symbols. The theme that I was using also went away. I restarted the computer and it booted back into a shell prompt with no GUI. I tried to get back to the GUI using alt+f7 but it didn't seem to exist

Does anyone know when we'll see Firefox 3.0.19 packaged for 8.04 LTS? I'm still stuck at 3.0.18. And what will happen after this? My understanding is that after .19 Mozilla is dropping support for FF 3.0.
Upgrade policies not withstanding, I find it rather annoying when an "LTS" release doesn't keep up with the most security-critical package in the distro, the browser. 8.04 LTS should have moved to FF 3.5+ a *long* time ago. Now it seems it will be forced to do so or else just forget about browser updates for the last year of 8.04?
I know I can install the current Firefox with ubuntuzilla, I just keep wishing Ubuntu would do it for me.

why I have a really bad FPS and how to fix it.
MY Setup:
Two 1Ghz Pentium III (Coppermine)
1GB Ram
8.9GB Hotswap HDD
In a Dell Poweredge 2550 (I think it doesn't say on the case)
Ubuntu 10.10 (Installed Via remote boot - Has gnome GUI, LAMP, Apache etc.)
I would like to play some games on this server to take advantage of the CPU's (the fastest I have) The Graphics card can display up to 1152x864 so It should be able to handle some 3d gaming but it I try to play tux racer it is very slow and only changes the frame every second, must be very low FPS also glxgears gives me in-between 50 and 60 fps and most people seem to get 500+!
The problem is not compiz because it is no-longer installed and I think I am using the open-source ati drivers not fglx.

I keep getting low frame rates while playing avi and mkv video files. I have tried messing around with the vsync option in compiz and the Catalyst control center but all to no avail.
I have read there are more ATI users with this problem. Is there a way to fix this?

For some reason Update Manager is not installing updates as of yesterday.I have it set to check daily and notify if updates are available. It has been working without issues for well over a year now.
Update Manager tells me updates are available and presents the list of security, recommended, and other updates. All are selected to update, but when I select Install Updates in Update Manager it returns with a Reading Package Information window overlaid on the main Update Manager window - building dependency tree then reading state information and dumps me back to the main Update Manager window without performing any update actions.

I just learned that warsow 0.6 is out, and went to see if it was available in the ubuntu software center yet, as opposed to going and downloading and installing it manually from the warsow website. The ubuntu repo's still have version 0.5, and at the bottom of the page it says:
"Updates: Canonical does not provide updates for Warsow. Some updates may be provided by the Ubuntu community."
So if I wanted to 'update' this item in the repo's for the better of the community what would that entail?
