Ubuntu :: Files/directories Have Disappeared (removed)

Nov 16, 2010

This is the second time it happens : I have some files/directories that have disappeared. The first time was:

- /home/$USER/.vimrc
- /home/$USER/.thunderbird

And now, it's my folder:

/home/$USER/document

which was more important. Is there any known issue about that ? I have sometimes a file system scan when I startup my computer. Is there a relationship by any chance ?

I have tried several things, such as:

Ubuntu :: Bastille Removed All Permissions From Samba Smbd Nmbd Files

Mar 24, 2010

After running Bastille to harden my server, Samba stopped working. It had asked me if I would like to disable Samba during the configuration and I selected 'no' so it should not have done this.

When I tried:

Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/samba restart

Nothing happened. I found in the script, if it does not detect smbd and nmbd running, it just exits -- no error message, just simply does nothing.

I found that /usr/sbin/smbd and /usr/sbin/nmbd both had all permissions removed. I set them back to 755 and restarted samba normally.

Ubuntu :: HDD Files Have Disappeared But Aren't Hidden?

Jun 6, 2010

I have an external HDD which i keep all my movies and tv shows and whatnot on. I rebooted my laptop routinely and when the HDD reconnected it still has the same amount of disc space used up but in my movie folder only 221/1186 movies are showing up in nautilus. I opened KDirStat to check and all the movies are still on the HDD nothing has been erased. I have restarted the laptop, restarted the HDD, disconnected/reconnected the HDD, swapped USB ports. I don't think it matters but I have written a .sh script that generates a list of all the folders contents and outputs it to a .txt file. Even though the HDD is only showing 221 files the txt output has all 1186. why 800 files would just not show up in nautilus explorer?

Currently running:
Ubuntu 9.10
Nautilus 1:2.28.10ubuntu3

EDIT: I can still access and play every file that is not showing up by opening them through a media player such as VLC. Also when i Alt+F2 and type the directory and file name they still fill themselves in as normal also.

Ubuntu :: All Files In Document Folder Disappeared

Now, all the files in the documents folder have disappeared. The folder structure is still there, including all subfolders in the documents folder, but everything that was in the folders is gone. The music, photos, and videos are all still there. I recently tried to set up Ubuntu One.
Postscript: I'm glad to realize that a recent simple backup had saved my data.

Ubuntu :: Files And The Entire Directory Is Missing / Disappeared

Apr 16, 2010

Ubuntu 10.04 Beta - I recently upgraded from 9.10. I have for some time been using an IOMEGA External drive, storing files created using Open Office. After I upgraded I continued to use those files and open them in OpenOffice 3.2. Yesterday I opened the drive to work on the files and the entire directory is missing. All the other directories seem to be there. Bizarre.

Have tried using "locate" in the console, but the files are nowhere to be found. I tried accessing the permissions on the external drive but get the response "The permissions of IOMEGA HDD could not be determined". Using a dual boot system with Windows Vista, booting through Grub.

Ubuntu :: Rm Directories Only - Not Files - When Doing Rm -r Foo*

Feb 28, 2011

How do I delete just directories and not files when performing a "rm -r foo*" command? E.G. I have foobar.txt foofoo.o foorebar.jpg and foo/ foonuggets/ and footemp/ in a directory. In one fell swoop how do I delete just the directories and preserve the files?

Seeing as how I only use the -r switch when removing directories I accidentally ran this command and removed files that I wanted (luckily nothing vital). Lesson learned now I want to prevent ever doing that on files that *are* vital.

Ubuntu :: Find Files With Directories And Sort By Mod Time?

Dec 4, 2010

what i wanted to do was find all the files with a specific name from a tree, sort them by modification time and have their directory appended to them so that i knew where they were (because they all have the same name). i tried a whole bunch of different things and finally did this:

Code:
find . -type f -name world.sav -exec ls -l '{}' ; > ~/dfsaves.txt; gawk '{$1=""; $2=""; $3=""; $4=""; $5=""; print}' ~/dfsaves.txt | sort -n > ~/dfsavessorted.txt

this did the trick pretty well, but as you can see it is far from elegant and i think i'm doing some things wrong and kludgy

first thing i tried was "ls -lRt | grep world.sav" which worked except i couldnt distinguish the files because there were no directories. that took a lot of looking till i accepted i couldnt make ls print directories as well and append them to the files somehow that their relationship would be clear. i tried piping ls to find, doing it in reverse, passing them from grep etc. etc. until i read some more stuff online that got me using gawk and sort. the questions:

1. is there some other, more elegant and simple way to do this kind of detection and sorting?

2. is there any way to use a pipe after using exec? the semicolon seems to prevent this entirely, forcing me to use an intermediate file as above. i could just remove it later, but i'd prefer a straight piping.
