Ubuntu :: All Files In Document Folder Disappeared
Jun 18, 2010
I dual boot Ubuntu 10.04 and windows 7. I have a separate partition where I store all my documents, music, photos and videos, so that I can access them using windows or ubuntu. Now, all the files in the documents folder have disappeared. The folder structure is still there, including all subfolders in the documents folder, but everything that was in the folders is gone. The music, photos, and videos are all still there. I recently tried to set up Ubuntu One.
Postscript: I'm glad to realize that a recent simple backup had saved my data.

I wanted to know is there anyway we can change the document root location /var/www to some other custom location. I tried modifying this location information in couple of conf files in /etc/httpd, but I started receiving lots of error messages from selinux on labelling issues. So I had to revert back.

I installed Ubuntu yesterday, ran into quite a few problems but I managed to fix all of the bigger ones, and so far I LOVE Ubuntu. Way better than Mac or Windows IMO. However there's also a few smaller problems I'd like to take care of, and I decided to start a separate thread for each one. So I don't know what happened, but everything in my home folder disappeared. So, I recreated the folders with the respective names. However, they just don't function the same. The icons look different, they don't register the same way ex: Cairo-dock's shortcuts... the links don't work, they don't show up under Places, and they show up on my desktop. I can't delete them from desktop either because they will simply disappear from the folder as well, which isn't like the real folders. So my question is how do I get those folders back and get them to look and function the same?

I'm not familiar with Linux and I do not understand technical wording at all. I was given this laptop as a favour and it is an ex-work Dell Latitude. I was given this to help me as a replacement when my Compaq working with Windows Vista stopped working. I do not understand the way Linux works much. I managed to upload photos before from my Ericsson K850i to my memory stick but this time when I tried it kept telling me that the path was invalid and such things which I did not understand. I created a folder for 2011 photos ready to go next year but the mouse pad is hard to control and even though I did nothing the 2010 folder went into the 2011. Sorry if I am not being very clear.
All I want to know is where did my whole years worth of digital photos go from my memory stick as I didn't delete anything. Would someone please help me understand all the different extensions or tell me what I need to do to try and retrieve them. I would be so grateful. I was nearly crying when it happened as when you right click in Linux there is no Undo/Redo button.
I have searched the board and I did see some other questions but I don't think they will help in this instance so I have started one. I hope I can get my photos back and also hope to hear from someone soon.

when i used windows there was this wonderful editor named Notepad++.it was perfect(it still is) some of its best and useful features of it (for me) was:
1-open all files in a folder when drag and drop the folder on it
2-search and replace a statement in all open files
3-have an extended mode which include special characters like
and so on.. i want to know if there is an editor with this feature in ubuntu?

I have an external HDD which i keep all my movies and tv shows and whatnot on. I rebooted my laptop routinely and when the HDD reconnected it still has the same amount of disc space used up but in my movie folder only 221/1186 movies are showing up in nautilus. I opened KDirStat to check and all the movies are still on the HDD nothing has been erased. I have restarted the laptop, restarted the HDD, disconnected/reconnected the HDD, swapped USB ports. I don't think it matters but I have written a .sh script that generates a list of all the folders contents and outputs it to a .txt file. Even though the HDD is only showing 221 files the txt output has all 1186. why 800 files would just not show up in nautilus explorer?
Currently running:
Ubuntu 9.10
Nautilus 1:2.28.10ubuntu3
EDIT: I can still access and play every file that is not showing up by opening them through a media player such as VLC. Also when i Alt+F2 and type the directory and file name they still fill themselves in as normal also.

This is the second time it happens : I have some files/directories that have disappeared. The first time was:
- /home/$USER/.vimrc
- /home/$USER/.thunderbird
And now, it's my folder:
/home/$USER/document
which was more important. Is there any known issue about that ? I have sometimes a file system scan when I startup my computer. Is there a relationship by any chance ?

How would i go about copying all .jpg or .JPG files from a folder and all its subfolders to my /usr/name/pictures folder? I'm guessing I'd have to use some sort of .[jJ][pP][gG] to get all the pictures from other examples i've seen, but really not sure how to use that in a recursive cp.

Ubuntu 10.04 Beta - I recently upgraded from 9.10. I have for some time been using an IOMEGA External drive, storing files created using Open Office. After I upgraded I continued to use those files and open them in OpenOffice 3.2. Yesterday I opened the drive to work on the files and the entire directory is missing. All the other directories seem to be there. Bizarre.
Have tried using "locate" in the console, but the files are nowhere to be found. I tried accessing the permissions on the external drive but get the response "The permissions of IOMEGA HDD could not be determined". Using a dual boot system with Windows Vista, booting through Grub.

I have been backing up onto a 60G ext2/3/4 partition on a 1TB external USB hard disk for a year or so now and have built up a few folders of .thunderbird, .mozilla, and other assorted files - using this as my standard "backup system" - but suddenly all the files and folders in this partition seem to have disappeared.
In Gparted and KParted the partition shows up as the correct size with the correct amount of "used space" (= yellow coloured portion), as it does when running offof any CD/standalone OS. And the small bars under the volume names in Dolphin show about the right amount having been "used" too.But however I try to access this partition (or, to be correct LVM I spose:-)) it still always comes up as empty - ie 0 files in it. After months of working just fine. The NTFS partition on the same external USB sdd reads and writes quite OK/normally and also shows the correct amount of "used space" - but even from root I can't see any of the old files in, or read/write to the linux one. It comes up with "Denied"/"Can't Write to.." errors when trying to write anything to it.
I ran a freeware utility called DiskInternals Linux-Recovery from winDoze which, after half an hour, came up with a list showing all the folders and files in the partition. It said that they would be written back onto the hard drive that they were "retrieved" from - but no change happened - still no contents showing when booting up in any linux.

I have apache httpd server on my Fedora 10I got 2 problems:First : I copied the web page files to its Document Root <var/www/html> & Disabled the default web page. But when I visit http:/localhost ,it shows up the list of files in <var/www/html> as if a ftp server browsed in web page. So how can I set http://localhost load my default web page index.html ?Second :I want to set up a web server on Internet through my router . I applied for DDNS account & input it into router correctly . I set virtual host in server to redirect any access from port 80 to 192.168.1.2:80 in LAN . Just for in case , I also download and running the DDNS software & installed it on PC 192.168.1.2 in LAN . My DDNS provider is oray.cn . It's a Chinese server provider . I don't think there is anything wrong with oray.cn . But if you need its information just visit oray.cn (Google can translate it for you). So I want to know did I miss something to set up a web server in this kind of situation

I am currently running 32-bit Windows 7 Ultimate, with a VMWare 32-bit Windows XP virtual machine, and I know how to use both OS's fluently. I have a 16 GB FAT32 USB drive which I use for document storage, to run portable applications, and to boot Ubuntu. I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 Live onto my USB with a 2 GB rw casper storage file. I would like to find a containment option where I can put all the Ubuntu system files currently exposed on my flash drive, into a folder, or a partition, where one click access to them is not available.
When they are in this folder/partition I would still like to be able to boot from the USB. I tried simple drag and drop of files/folders into a new folder within the USB drive, but I had a SYSLINUX error when I tried to boot from the USB. As soon as I removed the Ubuntu files from the folder I created, I was able to boot from the USB sans problems. These files don't have to be encrypted or hidden, I would just like them to be in a folder or some other container where they are not accessible as soon as you open the USB drive.

. . . except mp3s?
I don't know what just happened, but all my photos are gone, as are just about all the other files in my home directory. The file structures are there (all the folders and subfolders under /home/matt/pictures), but there are no files in any of them.
Scattered around the home folder, there are folders that still have stuff in them, but lots are empty. Pictures are by far the most precious thing gone.
I was playing around in a Virtualbox install of PC Linux and trying to get my home folder to display there. Did I do something bad? (I was granting read/write).
Nothing in trash. I have a backup that is fairly recent, but I'm afraid I might lose some precious stuff.
btw - this is Ubuntu 10.10 - NOT KUBUNTU
