Ubuntu :: File Recovery Using Livecd?

Jul 21, 2010

I did a search through the forums but couldn't find another post specific to mine so I hope I'm not repeating something old when I ask this...I'm currently using ubuntu livecd to recover files from a dead windows machine. And when I say dead I mean windows itself won't boot, after several attempts at troubleshooting. All hardware is tested and passed. BIOS is up to date. Ubuntu itself opens up and operates just fine, accessing all drives and peripherals.

My problem is this, I want to recover my music and photos from the hard drive before I restore and re-install Windows. Easy enough. But the hundreds of gigs of music and photos that were on my HD are missing when I file browse to them in ubuntu.Every other file on the HD is there, in tact, from windows system files to downloaded movies and tv shows. The "Music" and "Photos" folders on my drive are there, and inside each of them is only a few files from thousands that should be there.

Is there a function I am unaware of in ubuntu to show all contents of the drive? Surely a windows boot error wouldn't selectively delete only my music and photos...?

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 LiveCD Boot - Win7 Recovery Process On Restart

Jun 16, 2011

I wanted to put 11.04 on my wife's Win 7 Toshiba laptop so thought I would live boot and see everything worked first. Well it does seem to but I didn't have time to install it then so just shut down. Well on restarting without CD in it failed to boot windows and had to let the recovery process fix it. Now I want to set it up for dual boot at least to start with so until I can get some answers I don't want to risk it. Is there some problem with win 7? Will I be able to shrink the Win7 partition to put ubuntu on? Will Win 7 have an error each time she boots it after 11.04 is installed and run?

Ubuntu :: 10.10 Not Booting / LiveCD Doesn't Boot / Grub Recovery Mode Doesn't Boot

Jan 4, 2011

Ubuntu 10.10 doesn't boot at all. The liveCD only boots once every like 30 attempts, installing from liveCD froze, but the Alternate CD worked and installed ubuntu. Now when I try to boot into it using GRUB, it freezes at the beginning of the boot process. With normal boot it freezes at line: Starting AppArmor profiles Skipping profile in /etc/apparmor.d/disable: usr.bin.firefox.With recovery mode it freezes even before showing me anything

A little kinda like the liveCD, if I try like 30 times, it might manage to boot once in normal mode. That line keeps on repeating, the the xxx.xxx integer changes each time, and this goes on forever.I tried removing my floppy drive, but it didn't help.I tried to boot with fd0=noprobeThe one time it booted, when I restarted, it froze while trying to restart.

Ubuntu :: Rm -r File Recovery On Ntfs Partition?

Jan 29, 2010

I was copying a bunch of files between hard drives. For some reason I have permissions issues, but I was able to copy the data using cp in the terminal (I know I can sort out permissions, but that's something for another thread). So, I start copying files just fine, but cp doesn't have any sort of progress indication. So, I started up another two terminal windows, cd'd to the source and destination folders, and ls -l'd each to compare the folders.

At this point, I realised that I'd forgot to add -r to the cp command, so cancelled it. I decided it'd be better to start again and add -r in, and repeat the command. So, I went to the folder, went up a level, then rm -r'd the folder I was just in. It wasn't until I'd gone through with the command that I realised I was actually in the source folderSo, putting aside all the obvious things like 'You dope, you shouldn't have been messing around with rm -r, let alone sudo' and 'With great power comes great responsibility' and 'This never would have happened if you'd just sorted out your missions and usedNautilus', is there any way I can recover the data? I know it's possible in ext2, but not in ext3, but it's on an NTFS partition. Is it possible to recover files from this

Ubuntu :: Recovery Menu (in Recovery Mode) Does Not Work?

Aug 18, 2010

I've got a, as it seems to me, strange problem.I've inadvertently deleted my user from the group admin so I'm in the same situation of a lot of other users (read a lot of messages about it).My problem is that when restarted in recovery mode there is no way I can choose the 'drop to the root shell' or similar in the menu. The menu appears for a second and then I've got an empty screen. If I press a key I've been requested for a username and password that of course is not what I need.

Ubuntu Installation :: Creating Custom LiveCD/USB Iso File?

Apr 30, 2011

Having spent weeks perfecting my Ubuntu the way I like it, I was wondering if there is a way of preserving it as a either a liveCD or USB flash drive, with a view of using it on other PC's activated upon start up?

Possibly (under the USB option) with the option of launching from the flash drive itself, or installing onto a PC's hard drive. So, in essence, it would be a liveCD but custom made to reflect the way my Ubuntu looks and feels now? Is there any easy-to-use software available to perform such a task?

Ubuntu :: 10.4.2 LTS LiveCD Using Hard Drive For A Swap File?

Jun 22, 2011

I am concerned about the LiveCD touching my HDD at all. Is this a factor, such as using HDD space for a swap file? I thought the whole thing ran off my RAM. Anyway here's my specs:

MacBook Pro 500GB:
HFS+ Partition w/Snow Leaopard ~400GB
NTFS Parition with WIndows 7 ~100GB
EFI Partition ~200MB

1) Does this mean I have a "swap file" on there I don't know about? I assume both WIndows and OSX use virtual memory to manage RAM when running in their respective operating systems but does that mean Ubuntu LiveCD will use one of my winows or OSX partition's "swap file"?

2) Or is there an invisiable partition created for LiveCD to use on some unallocated space on my HDD (I don't think there's any but idunno)?

3) How can I be sure the LiveCD is not writing ANY data to the HDD? I don't believe I have ever explicitly created a swap file in either OSX or windows.

Fedora :: Finding A File Recovery Software?

Nov 23, 2009

Can anyone recommend good file recovery software for Fedora? I accidentally deleted an iPlayer file (not critical) from an NTFS partition. I tried booting into Windows and using Recuva - it can find the file intact (I can see from the file size it's the correct one) but the directory structure is gone and the file is nameless. EDIT: got it back with Recuva in Windows, just needed to run Recuva as admin.

Any open office file (all dot odt format)that I attempt to open opens in the document recovery mode;click recover goes to successfully recovered, click finish & the file closes. Open other dot odt files and ea joins the list of documents to recover and the list just adds each successive file to be recovered in other words all open office files are in a circular path.

Hardware :: Data Recovery On HDD - EXT3 File System

Aug 29, 2009

I accidentally formatted a HDD when I meant to format a USB thumb drive. The HDD is a 250GB drive that had about 180GB of data in the EXT3 format. I was actually attempting to make a bootable USB thumb drive with TRK (Trinity Rescue Kit). Kind of funny/ironic to mess up a drive while trying to make a rescue disk. Anyway, as soon as I realized what had happened, I pulled the drive out of the computer to make sure I didn't do anything else stupid to it. I have been searching for some way to recover and haven't really found much. There are a lot of programs to get Windows data back, but I haven't seen anything specific on the EXT3 file system.

Software :: Cannot Write To /etc/fstab Under File Recovery Mode?

Jul 17, 2009

Because I forgot to bring a portable hard drive, I cannot boot to a linux OS.

The reason is that the /etc/fstab has a line that is

Quote:

And ext3-datadisk is on the portable hard drive.

The booting process stopped when it prompts for a root passwd or Ctl-D to reboot.

I keyed in the root passwd, and a (File Recovery) prompt appeared.

I tried to vi /etc/fstab but I cannot save the edited /etc/fstab.

How can I boot successfully in this case ?

OpenSUSE Install :: Mount A Live Compressed File System For Reading & Writing From A LiveCD/DVD Image?

Jul 9, 2011

On a Linux CD/DVD, there are compressed filesystem images for the live version for KDE or Gnome for example, but they have no extension, but they are clearly an image file ( compressed filesystem images for the live version before installation ) !!

I was wondering, How do I mount these compressed filesystem images, after I copy the ISO content of the CD/DVD on my system .... I want to edit some files or packages and make some changes, like if I want to customize a live version of gnome for example ! ... ( I know you might be tempted to tell me to use KIWI etc to customize etc ..... ) ... but I want to be able to mount the compressed file system image, then edit it for reading and writing while it is in a subdirectory on its own ... i want to open it ! ... is there a way to do this ??? ... these type of files have no extension ...

i can open this compressed filesystem image then to edit for read & write ... before I roll it back again ..... If and when I succeed .... what should I watch out for ? ... will the same compressed file image but slightly modified work again ?

PS. that same question could be kind of translated or be extended like : how do I use unionfs/squashfs programs on the command line to mount these image files with no extension for read & write mode ???

Fedora Installation :: No CD Block Device From LiveCD, Then "unable To Find A Medium Containing A Live File"?

Sep 12, 2010

the message on the title only happens with Ubuntu. In Fedora, it just stops booting from LiveCD with "WARNING: Cannot find root file system!". The rest of the symptoms are the same.I'm trying to install Fedora LiveCD on an IBM i Series notebook (model 1161-21X). It's a Celeron powered unit with RAM expanded to 512MB. It has a 10GB HDD, and an internal CD-ROM drive. Although it has two USB ports (1.1), it cannot boot from a USB drive, so no pendrive nor external CD unit solution possible. When I boot from LiveCD, it stops booting with the message above. Looking atsg, there's no CD-ROM driver loaded. Also, there's a char device for sg0, but no block device for it, so no way to mount it. It seems that the driver module has been removed from the kernel. I'm currently running Fedora Core 5 in it. This very same problem happens with any Ubuntu newer that 6 or any Fedora post 7.
