Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 LiveCD Boot - Win7 Recovery Process On Restart

I wanted to put 11.04 on my wife's Win 7 Toshiba laptop so thought I would live boot and see everything worked first. Well it does seem to but I didn't have time to install it then so just shut down. Well on restarting without CD in it failed to boot windows and had to let the recovery process fix it. Now I want to set it up for dual boot at least to start with so until I can get some answers I don't want to risk it. Is there some problem with win 7? Will I be able to shrink the Win7 partition to put ubuntu on? Will Win 7 have an error each time she boots it after 11.04 is installed and run?
I have forgotten my administrative password and am locked out of my system. I have an HP Mini 1120NR and I am running Edubuntu software. I cannot remember which key I need to press during the restart process to bring up the system restore/recovery option.
Ubuntu 10.10 doesn't boot at all. The liveCD only boots once every like 30 attempts, installing from liveCD froze, but the Alternate CD worked and installed ubuntu. Now when I try to boot into it using GRUB, it freezes at the beginning of the boot process.With normal boot it freezes at line: Starting AppArmor profiles Skipping profile in /etc/apparmor.d/disable: usr.bin.firefox.With recovery mode it freezes even before showing me anything
A little kinda like the liveCD, if I try like 30 times, it might manage to boot once in normal mode.That line keeps on repeating, the the xxx.xxx integer changes each time, and this goes on forever.I tried removing my floppy drive, but it didn't help.I tried to boot with fd0=noprobeThe one time it booted, when I restarted, it froze while trying to restart.
I installed ubuntu 10.04 by wubi. It works perfect until I installed and ran "startupmanager". I find that I can't enter ubuntu, even in recovery mode. The screen keeps showing "rstslog main process ended, respawning [fail]" and other text
I'm having an issue installing Ubuntu with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit through Wubi. The Wubi installation works great and Ubuntu seems to install after the first reboot after selecting Ubuntu from Windows' boot menu, however whenever I select Ubuntu from Windows' boot menu after Ubuntu installs and it reboots for the second time, it loads the GRUB bootloader, however Ubuntu isn't listed at all.
Windows 7 is listed twice and Windows Vista is listed (seems it picks up the recovery partition for Windows 7 as Vista) and when I select the first Windows 7 from the GRUB bootloader, it just goes back to Windows' boot menu with Windows 7 and Ubuntu as the selections. If I select the second Windows 7 from the GRUB bootloader, it'll boot Windows 7 like normally. It looks like Ubuntu is nowhere to be found. Because of that, I just ended up uninstalling it.
i installed ubuntu after windows 7 but now i cant boot windows 7 i tried the start up repair and I've read through some questions answered on here and int figure out the problem i don't want to uninstall ubuntu unless it's my only option
how to dual boot XP, Win7 and F13? I ask this because I tried it a few weeks ago and I couldn't boot into XP. I installed XP, Win7 and Fedora in that order and when I tried to boot into XP from grub I got the message Code: Boot Mgr not found. Press Cntrl-Alt-Del to restart
I've happily finished a SWE course that required VS2010, and thus a new computer to run the hog. Now that the course is done, I'm installing Ubuntu. As the post title implies, the live CD works well and the install goes fine. I'm able to boot up in Ubuntu and do an update. After that, though, Ubuntu freezes on boot. It gets as far as the moving dots but freezes right after that.
I did a search through the forums but couldn't find another post specific to mine so I hope I'm not repeating something old when I ask this...I'm currently using ubuntu livecd to recover files from a dead windows machine. And when I say dead I mean windows itself won't boot, after several attempts at troubleshooting. All hardware is tested and passed. BIOS is up to date. Ubuntu itself opens up and operates just fine, accessing all drives and peripherals.
My problem is this, I want to recover my music and photos from the hard drive before I restore and re-install Windows. Easy enough. But the hundreds of gigs of music and photos that were on my HD are missing when I file browse to them in ubuntu.Every other file on the HD is there, in tact, from windows system files to downloaded movies and tv shows. The "Music" and "Photos" folders on my drive are there, and inside each of them is only a few files from thousands that should be there.
Is there a function I am unaware of in ubuntu to show all contents of the drive? Surely a windows boot error wouldn't selectively delete only my music and photos...?
As a big supporter of Ubuntu, after installing Ubuntu 10.10 on my mums laptop i decided to also install it on my sisters Acer Aspire one netbook.
The specific netbook had pre-installed Win7 starter. Everything went really smooth with the installation with ubuntu 10.10, Grub menu was also loading pretty well but when i chose to load on windows it loads the recovery partition of the hard drive.
The issue is that the netbook, like most netbooks and laptops, has a hidden partition which is used to recover Windows on the system. My Grub2 loader added this partition as an option to load windows with result me not be able to boot on windows ...well i do can load but it loads the recovery of windows.
I have a Computer, It came with Windows 7 64bit on it. I installed Ubuntu through WUBI. I used the Windows Disk Management program to resize my HDD. I shrunk the main drive and created a 20 gig free space. I installed WindowsXP on this 20g space. I had to change from AHCI to ATA. I started my new XP installation. As I should have expected my the screen that let me pick between Windows 7 and Ubuntu was gone, and it just said XP. Well thats cool. I get in XP use bcdeasy and use the install Win7 to mbr. So I restarted. Great I now I have Ubuntu and Win7... but no XP. So i think, okay, ill boot into Ubuntu, use the update grub command and XP will be there, so i do it and restart. No XP, So i try to boot into Win7 and see if i can do something in there.. No luck it says it can't boot and takes me to a startup recovery thing. Which, as Windows recovery things tend to do, doesn't find anything wrong. So I have Ubuntu now, which is great, but I do need Windows.
I have searched and read threads about the Bitlocker, grub and TPM issues that might show up, but I can't draw any conclusions as some information contradict each other. To make sure I don't screw up my pc as thought I need to make a new post.
At work I'm supposed to run Windows 7 and encrypt the win-partition with Bitlocker. I have installed Windows, turned on the encryption and it ties into the TPM. But as I am moving over to the *nix department I want to run Ubuntu as dual boot to check everything rusn fine with all the systems I need. Before I installed Windows I partioned the disk:
1,5 GB for system/bitlocker requirement 147 GB for Windows, C: 85 GB which is empty where I intend to install Ubuntu (not formated yet)
I boot into Windows with my bitlocker/TPM key on an USB-stick. Without the usb-stick the pc won't boot. Now, before I try to install Ubuntu I want to make sure to do it the right so I don't mess up the Windows installation or won't be able to boot the pc at all.
There seem to be several "schools" to this. Some suggest I should have installed Ubuntu first, then Windows and then encrypt. Some say, no worries just fire away and install since you are not planning to read the windows-partition from Ubuntu. Or an alternative, install but make sure to deactive the encryption during installation. Some say, install but make sure grub is installed in (multiple choices) location.
So we install Windows 7 home premium. Then in goes the Ubuntu Disk. Ubuntu seems to think that the windows 7 partition is one big lump of unallocated space. Tried multiple re-installs of Windows 7, all concluding the same. A bit of googling told me that it has something to do with partition tables or something. I even tried to use Gdisk to delete Gpt from the windows disk, which - as I have absolutely no idea what any of it means, - resulted in me screwing up the entire Win7 partition hence win7 not being able to boot anymore.
i've seen on the internet include a lot of technical garble which I don't understand. I've been using Linux for a while, but as far as partitioning and dual booting is concerned, it's always gone smoothly for me up until now
i have ubuntu 10 and win 7 dual booting on one hdd, all of a sudden grub says error no such partition when i select windows at the boot menu. and i cant get to the win7 partition from ubuntu (to play music and stuff, this used to work, places, mount filesystem, 250 gigs whatever). i've tried the stuff in these links and nothing has worked so farpartition info

I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 (64bit) next to my Windows 7, in SSD hard drive. I'm able to boot Ubuntu with no problem, but my problem is my Windows. When I try to enter windows 7, all I get is a black screen with one blink char, and from there it does nothing...
I have the option of selecting between win7 and Ubuntu during start up, but when i select Ubuntu it goes to the first 2 lines of command and then restarts again. Windows 7 works fine. This is the second installation of ubuntu on this computer, the first attempt did the same thing (would not boot into ubuntu but win was fine) after i lost power. This time i shut the computer off for a full week while i was on vacation. I have switched between windows and ubuntu a couple of times and had no issue with this installation.

I'm trying to boot off a USB LiveCD of Ubuntu 9.10 in order to save some data off a botched UNR install. However when I try to boot off said USB drive, I get this error:
Code: process 2425: arguments to dbus_pending_call_set_notify() were incorrect, assertion "pending != NULL" failed in file dbus-pending-call.c line 596 The error repeats constantly until I turn off the netbook (EeePC 1008HA).
I've tested the USB drive using the "Check disk" option in the boot menu, and it comes up clean.
I am currently triple booting between Windows, Mac, and Ubuntu. I was having problems booting earlier and somehow Grub2 got replaced by Grub 1.5 command line. I can't boot into Ubuntu anymore, I can only boot into a LiveCD, but I can't figure out how to re-install Grub2.. I tried using Terminal to install Grub, but it still did 1.5 command line. I did sudo apt-install grub and everything. Nothing worked..
I've been trying to get my LiveCD (9.10) to boot but I can't get it to work. I get it to the main screen then I select "Try Ubuntu without making changes to my system" and I get a whole bunch of information to pop up... looks like techno giberish to me. Then I get what essentially looks like a prompt, except no matter what I type I get nothing out of it. I just want to be able to use my liveCD without issue.
P.S. I'm using a Toshiba Satellite Laptop that has windows 7 installed.
I'm having a lot of trouble with a PC that has been running Ubuntu for ages, since about 8.04 I think. I've run the distro upgrade a few times and it was running 10.04, but for some reason won't boot anymore. So I'm trying to do a fresh reinstall but I can't get the LiveCD to boot. I'm trying to install 10.04 AMD64 desktop.If I leave the CD to boot, I get to a Busybox screen showing the error "No init found. Try passing init= bootarg." and an (initramfs) prompt. This is all displayed at 1280x1024 res - the native image of the screen I'm using.It's an NVidia chipset - an older one. So I tried hitting a key during boot and putting the nomodeset option on. I get the same error, but at a lower resolution
I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 this past week. Foolishly, I tried to finish it quickly, and let grub fiddle with my Vista volume, sdb1. I realized it after I agreed. Shucks! Now, my computer won't boot unless I go to the ROM. A bit of history, my original 9.10 install was on a formerly dual boot 160 Gig IDE drive. This one was really just my main Ubuntu drive (sba1). I would have gladly gotten rid of the useless NTFS side of it, but never wanted to bother. The terabyte SATA drive is my Vista volume (and general data drive). It has no Ubuntu nothing on it. When I wanted to boot to Vista, I would boot to sda1 via GRUB2 and then select Vista. It would then come up to the Vista Bootloader, and I'd select Vista and boom, things worked fine.Then I did my ugrade. Somehow, the original grub on sda1 got messed up. I have no idea how. I get the somewhat familiar error: the symbol 'grub_puts_' not found and unceremoniously dumped to a grub rescue>_ prompt. Great! I can enter the ROM and tell it to boot from sdb1, then grub comes up exactly like before and I can select Ubuntu and 10.04 comes up!
So my MBR on sdb1 has now been ruined by GRUB2. Now I know I should never have allowed GRUB to write to sdb1, but why did it also mess up sda1?To make matters worse, I can't use the various boot-to-LiveCD solutions rather common out there. I downloaded the ubuntu-10.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso and burned it. But since I got my new 25" monitor for Christmas, I guess it's too much for the poor old LiveCD disk. I upgraded via the Update Manager, so the video wasn't an issue. Now, when I boot from the LiveCD, the screen turns black and that's it. Take the disk out, reboot, and you're back to the ROM or that beautiful grub rescue>
A 10.10 LiveCD (burned from the ISO image) won't boot my system using my LG GSA-4167B DVD drive which has been working fine for several years.Upon boot, Ubuntu starts to boot up. The splash screen appears. The drive activity light flashes for a while and it sounds as if things are progressing. Then the drive gets into a funky pattern: click-click-spin fast. click-click-spin fast...
The purple splash screen is still present, with 5 red dots (not flashing) The LG drive happily boots up a Windows CD, BartPE CD, Ultimate Win CD, Macrium recovery CD, Gentoo distro CD, etc etc. Only the Ubuntu 10.10 LiveCD is problematic.Oddly, a 10.04 LTS LiveCD obtained with the book "Ubuntu for Non-Geeks" boots OK. (that CD is not burned at home). The LG GSA-4167B is 2005 vintage, with IDE interface. I swapped it for an even older (2004) LG DW1610 DVD drive. That drive boots the 10.10 LiveCD just fine.
I downloaded the 10.10 ISO image a second time and burned a second copy. Same results. The LG website had new firmware available for the GSA-4167B drive, so I downloaded that and flashed the drive. No change - it still won't boot the 10.10 CD. Are LG drives known to be problematic with Ubuntu? Are the CD-DVD drivers on the LiveCD limited in their functionality? If I go out and buy a new drive, should I avoid LG products? Perhaps I'l try burning the 10.10 ISO on to a DVD and see if that makes any difference.
I have Fedora 14 installed on my laptop (Installed with few issues) and I'm trying to install ubuntu on my desktop. I had ubuntu 10.04 installed before on a second (250gb) hard drive (Windows 7 on the other 1TB drive) with a few issues and kinda screwed a few things up trying to upgrade to 10.10. So, I said screw it, and downloaded the live .iso for 10.10 (x64) and burned it to disk. I boot from the live CD and choose the install option to use entire 250Gb disk. I choose my options, including to download updates and install 3rd party software and let the install run its course. Everything seems to be going fine and it asks me to restart. So I say yes, the disk pops out and the screen goes dark... and then nothing happens. The computer's still on but hasn't restarted yet. I hit the del key (Which I use to enter BIOS) and the computer finally restarts. I enter BIOS and tell it to boot from the 250Gb HDD, save and exit. However, it gets stuck at the point where it (It, I assume to be the motherboard) says "Loading Operations System ..." and with a blinking cursor on the line underneath. Nothing happeneds.
I tried again just this morning using the same procedure. I'm once again stuck at the "Loading Operating System .." screen.
EDIT: After poking around a bit more, I remembered I was confronted by a GRUB menu when I booted into Windows 7 HDD. So, I selected Linux from the menu and all seems good. Does anyone know why this is? It's very odd, well at least to me. Why would GRUB be on the windows hard drive? Is this something I should be concerned about?
Trying a LiveCD of 9.04 and it wont boot on iMac 8,1 with Intel CoreDuo2. Using rEFIt or not doesn't help, boot to cd gives a black screen with overlength cursor and takes no keyboard input (CAPS light wont even come on). No splash screen or chance to get a prompt. md5 check of cd against iso file using dd is fine and matches published md5. Tried alternative (text) cd iso and same story. Tried Bootcamp for the initial partitioning and no difference. Mac installation cd boots fine as does OSX, burned cd from multiple machines and no joy. Graphics is an ATI Radeon HD2400. Mac running OSX 10.5.8
I bought a netbook asus 1015pn, which is at first under Windows 7 Starter, and I want to run it under Ubuntu exclusively. I know the main procedure as I already did it on two computers, but here I have a problem to boot my netbook on my external CD burner : I can't find how to access to the configuration of the boot order. using del, I can configure how I want to boot Windows (safe mod, recovering, and so on...) but I can't find how to boot on any other peripheral.
I'm not a Linux noob, by any stretch, but this is driving me INSANE. I have an Acer Aspire 4320 laptop, and I'm trying to install 10.10 on it. The LiveCD, and the LiveUSB, take over 3+ HOURS to boot to a desktop. Then, it can't format the drive. Am I missing boot options (i.e. 'noapic') or something?
Do I set the drive in bios to ide or AHCI? (If set to ide, it takes ALOT longer..approx 45 min to get to the "run" or "install" screen) EDIT: I did manage ONCE to get to 'check this drive for errors', no killers found. (At the 'keyboard screen, I pressed 'space'). Do I need to add any other options here?
After upgrading to 9.10 Karmic Koala, my Amilo Laptop (AMD64) refuses to boot. I installed GRUB2 which works fine for my WinXP ... and Karmic will boot in recovery mode.
When trying a normal boot, I get a black screen. CRTL-ALT-F1 yields just a blinking cursor. The system will immediately reboot when pressing CRTL-ALT-Entf.
When booting in recovery mode, I choose "Resume normal boot" from the menu, log in while in cosole mode and enter "startx" ... and the grafic environtment works fine!
Why does the system work in recovery mode, but does not start with a normal boot?

Firstlyi want to specify that i read many threads and guides before posting this, tried to follow some advice and solutions but nothing worked (but I am a beginner user, and maybe i did something wrong!)My laptop is a Lenovo SL410 (i bought it in China) which came with pre-installed Windows Vista.I had many trouble with resizing the partition in order to make room for Ubuntu but i finally managed. I successfully installed Ubuntu 10.04 and everything works fine.My problem is that Grub shows"Windows Recovery Environment (loader) (on /dev/sda1)" instead of normal Windows Vista (which is on /dev/sda2)If i choose Windows Recovery Env. i can load Vista but is not stable, keeps crashing, or giving me warning about low memory
I bought a new computer (laptop HP DV6-1375dx) and I want to set a dual boot with win7, like I did with my desktop (clean install) However, my question is, with the new laptop all I have is the rescue disks vs. having the single OEM version. IS that a problem? for the desktop I followed lifehackers article "Dual boot win7 and ubuntu in perfect harmony." no problems at all.
what I am afraid of is formatting the new hard drive and the recovery partition and not being able to use the disks for some reason....am I over-reacting?
I had 9.10 installed for a long time as a dual boot with win7 on this computer. I mostly use win7, but today i went into ubuntu and it said there was a new version available so i installed it.the error occured with the grub installation. it said if i was unsure of where to install it, i should install it on all drives, so I did. ever since then i've been looking online using this liveCD to find some solution to fix the problem, but I cant.here is what i've tried:
1. i downloaded a windows 7 repair disc and used the bootrec.exe /fixboot and /fixmbr commands, but this ends up with a blank screen with a cursor blinking. 2. I've tried re-installing grub, but this ends with the boot freezing at a screen with something like: "sh:grub>" and i can't do anything. 3. I've tried testdisk but this also didn't work for me.
