Applications :: Display Encoding Of File?

Jan 26, 2011

I wanted to know how to determine the encoding of a file which was uploaded by FTP. I found the thread /newbie/47637-how-check-encoding-text.html which points to the right information (by using the command file) but it doesn't help me in my case. Take a look yourself:Code: # file testutf8.phptestutf8.php: PHP script text As you see, Linux (Debian Lenny in my case) detects the file as PHP script text because of the code within the file (that's my guess at least). Is there another way to check how this file was encoded?

Ubuntu :: Open Office Writer - Lost File To Text Encoding?

Mar 3, 2011

I was working on a text file in open office writer last night, and this morning i tried to open it and a little thing popped up saying "ASCII Filter Options," prompting me for which character set, language and default fonts I wanted to use. (only after it asked if i wanted to recover the document, which i just did since it was asking me...) Now the document, which was very important, is a scrambled bunch of random characters! I cannot find the correct character set. Why is it prompting me for which character encoding I am using in the first place?

General :: Auto Detect Text File Encoding ?

Jun 24, 2011

There are many plain text files which were encoded in variant charsets.

I want to convert them all to UTF-8, but before running iconv, I need to know its original encoding. Most browsers have an Auto Detect option in encodings, however, I can't check those text files one by one because there are too many.

Only having known the original encoding, I then can convert the texts by iconv -f DETECTED_CHARSET -t utf-8.

Is there any utility to detect the encoding of plain text files? It DOES NOT have to be 100% perfect, I don't mind if there're 100 files misconverted in 1,000,000 files.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Convert Ogg To Mp3 - Sox My.ogg My.mp3: "sox FAIL Formats: Can't Open Output File `x.mp3': SoX Was Compiled Without MP3 Encoding Support"

Sep 17, 2010

I have a few ogg files that I want to put on my phone. My phone doesn't play oggs, so I need to convert. It's just an audiobook so I really don't care about quality. Oddly, nothing I try seems to be up to the task. Here's what I tried so far:

sox my.ogg my.mp3: "sox FAIL formats: can't open output file `x.mp3': SoX was compiled without MP3 encoding support" mencoder: wants video too?? Wha?? vlc (from GUI): "p, li { white-space: pre-wrapStreaming / Transcoding failed: It seems your FFMPEG (libavcodec) installation lacks the following encoder: MPEG Audio layer 1/2/3. If you don't know how to fix this, ask for support from your distribution.

This is not an error inside VLC media player. Do not contact the VideoLAN project about this issue." lame my.ogg my.mp3: "sorry, vorbis support in LAME is deprecated." audicity (via GUI): success..but I'm now going to have to somehow script it. This is very annoying. It makes me want to rip directly into mp3 from now on. Is there an easy way to convert an ogg file to an mp3 from the command-line?

Red Hat / Fedora :: Filesystem Check After Power Outage - WARNING: "Running E2fsck On A Mounted Filesystem May Cause SEVERE Filesystem Damage"

May 18, 2011

I am very new to linux, and I have a question regarding the filesystem check (fsck). The power recently went out and when I tried to restart linux the following error appears:

*/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced it then goes on to say..

*An error occured during the file system check. Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot when you leave the shell. Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue) I wasn't sure what to do, but checked some other online forums and they suggested running fsck manually - so I typed in the root password - and used the command, "fsck -A -V ; echo == $? ==" it then gave the following message

*WARNING!!! Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause SEVERE filesystem damage
*Would you like to continue (y/n)

Again, I wasn't sure what to do so i just checked no. I then manually turned off the computer and was prompted at the beginning to press Alt-3. I was brought to another screen and it informed me one of the drives was degraded and suggested rebuilding the array. I tried doing this, but it still brings me back to the original error of, "/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced," and the process continues.

Also, when I tried to rebuild the array, I didn't backup any of the data on our home directory before doing this (which was probably a big mistake). After being prompted to type the root password, I was able to give the ls command and look at all the directories...the home directory where our data was stored was empty and I am afraid I may have lost some information. Is there a possibility that data was lost when I was trying to rebuild using the old drives?

Ubuntu :: Root Filesystem Fills Up When Copying A Large File?

Mar 17, 2010

I was just copying a large (50GB) file from one mounted partition to another mounted partition (a USB drive), but before the operation completed, my root filesystem, on a separate partition, filled up.Because it filled up I also couldn't get past the login when I rebooted. I think this is because there is no room to load temporary files. I'm expanding the root partition to temporarily fix this. how can I avoid my root file system filling up when copying a massive file between mounted partitions? the file is being cached in root during the transfer.

Ubuntu :: Finding Filesystem Type/repair Broken Filesystem?

Jul 9, 2010

I have a following problem: Recently my drive with Ubuntu 9.4 has mysteriously stopped working, i.e. when I switch the computer on it informs me that GRUB didn't find the filesystem. Well, I suppose it happens.

First, I though it was due to the drive dying, but I popped it in an external enclosure and HDTune told me the drive was fine. Wanting to recover the files on the drive before reinstalling I first tried to mount it in said external enclosure under Windows (I have Win Ext2 driver installed which used to work just fine). This time, however, drive gets assigned a letter but upon opening it Windows popped up an error saying that the drive was not formatted and whether I would like to format it then.

Unfazed by this streak of failures I tried to mount it under Linux but, alas, to no avail. I might have tried every single -t operator under mount command but it still won't budge and let me mount.

CentOS 5 :: Automount Cifs Filesystem Using The Fstab File

Aug 3, 2010

I have been running a server for 3-4 years now, and my shares have been mounting just fine. Well, the network admin looked at a backup and seen that the last date backed up was june. I got to looking around and seen that the share is not mounting. I can mount it with sudo mount -a, which tells me my syntax is correct. I get an error about IPv4 socket not opened and it is aborting the operation when I run dmesg | tail, since I can use the above command to mount later, it sounds to me like it is trying to mount before the network connection is ready.

I have done some looking over some init scripts and found that in the /etc/rc.d/init.r/netfs script it has a line that states that it is checking to see if the network is up before it starts to mount the filesystems and the such. This is set to no, my question is, can I change this option to yes and get my desired results, waiting for the network to be up before it mounts the filesystems.

I'm relatively experienced with UNIX and Linux, but this has me thrown for quite a loop, and it seemed like such a simple question. How would I go about finding the newest file in a file system? I thought something like:

Code:

ls -ltr `find /usr -type f`

would work, but I seem to be exceeding the argument maximum for ls:

ksh: 0403-029 There is not enough memory available now

I thought something involving xargs might work, but I really suck with that command.

General :: External Drive Read Only - WARNING! Running E2fsck On A Mounted Filesystem May Cause SEVERE Filesystem Damage

Mar 24, 2010

I've had a look at some similar threads but as I'm very new to linux they're already a bit technical for me. Sorry, this calls for someone with patience. I gather from other threads that disconnecting an external drive without unmounting is a no-no, and this seems to be the likely cause. Now the disk is read only and I'm unable to change any settings through the usual control panel on ubuntu. I'm just not familiar with the terminal instructions. I tried to cut and past a few command lines from other threads but I got some warnings that proceding could damage data. Like this one: WARNING! Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause SEVERE filesystem damage.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Re-encoding Animated DVD?

Aug 8, 2011

I'm copying an animated TV series from DVD to my computer. The DVDs are encoded at 29.970fps, which I find strange because animation usually uses 23.976fps. Anyway, what I have done is de-interlaced and re-encoded it to H.264. Now it is set to 59.970fps, which I think is higher than what I want. I'm seeking advice on whether I should leave it at that or change it to one of the lower frame rates. Another question: Do you think that I should be encoding to H.263 instead? This is just to have copies of the videos on my hard drive.

Note: I used Avidemux with the Yadif filter using the bob method to de-interlace the film. I think the bob method preserves the actual 60 fields and converts them into complete frames. I'm guessing that the temporal spatial check would halve the frames and give me the 29.970fps.
