Ubuntu :: Fading Out Windows - Change?
Aug 8, 2010
I'm brand new to Ubuntu. Somehow, in the ("overwhelming") process of customizing the look and feel, I unwittingly changed something that makes a window "disappear" when I hover over another non-focused window? What did I change and how do I undo it? I'm not sure what I did.

I've recently decided to switch from KDE 4.6 to Gnome 3. I've always been a KDE user, since version 2, really. But I happen to really like the new look of Gnome. To me it looks more professional somehow. Very little in terms of distractions. On both my laptop and my desktop, I have installed the Gnome 3 packages through Packagekit and on both machines it runs nice and smooth. There is one difference, though. On the desktop machine, when I lock the screen, it goes to black instantly. On the laptop, it fades to black. I really like the look of the fading animation and I'd like the desktop machine to do the same, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how to do it.
The difference between both machines is that the laptop has an Intel graphics card whereas the desktop machine has an Nvidia 6800 GT, with the proprietary driver running. I followed Leigh's excellent guide to install that driver and it works like a charm. I do have desktop effects in KDE 4, so I know the driver is installed and running. I also am able to run hardware accelerated games in Wine without a problem.Being new to Gnome, especially Gnome 3, I have no idea where to look for these kinds of special effects. The System Settings program seems sort of Spartan and the gconf-editor doesn't show me anything that I can relate to this fading effect.

Is there a plugin for Audacious where if you queue up a song in a certain way, it will fade the last few seconds of the song currently playing, but it starts to play the next song while the current song is still fading/playing? (So that the songs overlap each other.) Otherwise if you make a normal queue, it will finish playing the current song entirely, then move on the the next song after the current song is fully finished (how it plays music by default).

I have been playing around with Ubuntu 10.10 for a few days. I had the functionality of when my mouse left the active window it would fade and any window behind it I moused over would come into focus. I liked this feature, but I broke it somehow. I was playing around with Compiz and all its cool animations, cube transitions, and other stuff. I am not sure if I did something in Compiz to break it or if that is unrelated.

I am having a problem. I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on a Sony Vaio FW series. It has Nvidia graphics that I don't think the OS is taking advantage of, whatever. It also came with 64-bit Windows, it's a 32-bit OS, and again, as far as I have been concerned, whatever. It's been functioning fine for the half a year since I installed it.
Until recently. My computer has been freezing. What happened first is that the screen randomly whited out, fading in splotches to black and then back to white. This freaked me out, but restarting seemed to smooth things out. Then windows in the OS wouldn't resize, then Flash videos would freeze the OS up, repeating the 2 seconds of sound it last played. Over and over again. In a loop. On a white screen. Sometimes with vertical stripes.
This all happens inconsistently, and whenever I restart it's fine again. I just want to know if there's a deeper issue so that I can resolve it. Otherwise I have been completely satisfied, as a previous Windows and OSX user who is computer-competent within a GUI.

I get tired of the ugly default GNOME theme that rears its head when I'm doing something as superuser. I understand why it's desirable for these windows with elevated privileges to look different, but I'd like to choose a different theme.
So... what terminal command do I run to bring up the Appearance window? My thought is if I simply run it with "sudo", any changes made would affect the appearance of future elevated-privilege windows. Does that sound right, or am I out in left field?

This isn't important but it's always been an itch I can't figure out. I have 3 partitions on my laptop: Ubuntu, OSx86 and Windows 7. I use Pysdm Storage Device Manager to automount them on start-up.
My OSx86 partition is labelled "OS X" and displays as such on all three systems. My Windows partition displays as "80GB File System" (as it's meant to).
I was just wondering whether or not it was possible to change how it displays on Ubuntu safely, to something more aesthetically pleasing such as "Win7".

Since I have my mp3s on a windows directory (C:UsersmagodiafanoMusic) I used to create a link in order to have a direct access to this directory from the ubuntu's desktop. The problem is that everytime I log into the pc, the link does not work anymore as if the position of the directory was changed. So I have a lot of problems with the library of rhythmbox too. What is my error?

I have already found intructions on how to dual boot the way I want, and how to change the wallpaper in Windows 7 Starter. I also already have experiance with Ubuntu, Unity 3D, and Windows XP.What would be the best solution?

It's in the title - I just want to change from the GRUB loader back to the Windows MBR loader. It's probably something simple, I guess. It's just I don't want to see the GRUB loader (first) when I turn on my computer I want to see the normal Windows MBR.
If I can do this, I'll use EasyBCD to add Ubuntu into the MBR so it can go to the GRUB loader to go into Ubuntu. I'm sorry if I'm not making much sense, I'm new to Ubuntu.

I am using Ubuntu after a BSOD error. Ubuntu is awesome, I can access all my windows files, however, I need to access my programs on windows. Here's what happened - I accidentally changed permissions after getting a virus. I then tried to do a system restore and during that process the computer crashed. When I try to boot to windows in every possible mode, I am always left with the dreaded blue screen of death.

I just want to change the color of the close button on windows of the Ambiance theme from the orange to blue. I copied the theme from usr/share into my .themes folder so I don't mess with the original, and then I just changed the name to Blue Ambiance and changed the appropriate .png files I found in the metacity folder to blue. When I select this new them in my appearance menu though nothing changes.

I installed last ubuntu from windows 7 using wubi and it worked great, i am writing this from ubuntu. The problem is I changed the timeout to 0 on windows 7 startup options as well default operating system to ubuntu, so now i cannot boot to windows because the windows 7 boot manager just flashes and goes directly to the grub boot manager and even if try to choose windows 7 on grub boot manager it only goes back to windows 7 boot manager and the same thing happens.
I have no DVD drive and i only have a 1Gigabyte USB PEN.
I already searched insanely on ubuntu forums, used unebooting, tried creating a windows 7 startup disk with unebooting, tried formating USB PEN with GLParted and choosing FAT32, ex3, NTSF as well with boot flag and then copying files to usb, wich didnt work. I tried to fix it with SUPER GRUB DISK didnt work too....
Is there anyway i can change this little timeout setting from windows 7 boot partition (yes i really learned something) so i can boot to windows 7? By whatever method, it can be from within ubuntu or using a 1Gb pen?
I know it can only be changed using bcdedit.exe but not even with wine it worked.

I'm in an organization where each user has a Windows network username, and a central windows server with a folder for each user. I can access the folder using SAMBA and my (windows) network user name. I want to change the permissions (sharing settings) for my folder on this windows server - using only Ubuntu.
Had i been using windows I would simply right-click on the folder, go to permissions settings and add/modify users in the list.First of all, is it even possible to do this using Ubuntu?

My laptop has a small flickering area at the bottom of the screen, about 1 cm high. It's a hardware problem. It's very annoying but I can just put a bit of dark paper over it. I would like to change the ubuntu (10.04) defaults so that the bottom of the screen is never used - I can change some windows, but is there a global way to stop all windows, menus etc from using that lower area
