Fedora :: No Fading Animation In Gnome3, F15?
Jul 25, 2011I've recently decided to switch from KDE 4.6 to Gnome 3. I've always been a KDE user, since version 2, really. But I happen to really like the new look of Gnome. To me it looks more professional somehow. Very little in terms of distractions.On both my laptop and my desktop, I have installed the Gnome 3 packages through Packagekit and on both machines it runs nice and smooth. There is one difference, though. On the desktop machine, when I lock the screen, it goes to black instantly. On the laptop, it fades to black. I really like the look of the fading animation and I'd like the desktop machine to do the same, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how to do it.
The difference between both machines is that the laptop has an Intel graphics card whereas the desktop machine has an Nvidia 6800 GT, with the proprietary driver running. I followed Leigh's excellent guide to install that driver and it works like a charm. I do have desktop effects in KDE 4, so I know the driver is installed and running. I also am able to run hardware accelerated games in Wine without a problem.Being new to Gnome, especially Gnome 3, I have no idea where to look for these kinds of special effects. The System Settings program seems sort of Spartan and the gconf-editor doesn't show me anything that I can relate to this fading effect.

Apr 2, 2009Is there a plugin for Audacious where if you queue up a song in a certain way, it will fade the last few seconds of the song currently playing, but it starts to play the next song while the current song is still fading/playing? (So that the songs overlap each other.) Otherwise if you make a normal queue, it will finish playing the current song entirely, then move on the the next song after the current song is fully finished (how it plays music by default).

I had the functionality of when my mouse left the active window it would fade and any window behind it I moused over would come into focus. I liked this feature, but I broke it somehow. I was playing around with Compiz and all its cool animations, cube transitions, and other stuff. I am not sure if I did something in Compiz to break it or if that is unrelated.

Dec 18, 2010I am having a problem. I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on a Sony Vaio FW series. It has Nvidia graphics that I don't think the OS is taking advantage of, whatever. It also came with 64-bit Windows, it's a 32-bit OS, and again, as far as I have been concerned, whatever. It's been functioning fine for the half a year since I installed it.
Until recently. My computer has been freezing. What happened first is that the screen randomly whited out, fading in splotches to black and then back to white. This freaked me out, but restarting seemed to smooth things out. Then windows in the OS wouldn't resize, then Flash videos would freeze the OS up, repeating the 2 seconds of sound it last played. Over and over again. In a loop. On a white screen. Sometimes with vertical stripes.
This all happens inconsistently, and whenever I restart it's fine again. I just want to know if there's a deeper issue so that I can resolve it. Otherwise I have been completely satisfied, as a previous Windows and OSX user who is computer-competent within a GUI.

May 11, 2010I have a few questions regarding HTML, UNIX and Javascript. I've been tasked with creating a fairly simple webpage that takes a few inputs. Each input must correspond to an argument in a UNIX command running on a server.On a UNIX server we have a script (.ksh) that takes 3 arguments. The result of the script is a data file which is FTP'ed to an external server. Let's forget about the FTP portion for now. I would like to know where I should begin.What I know so far:

Fedora :: 15 KDE Keeps Crashing + Pics
Aug 6, 2011Fedora keeps crashing on me. It happens randomly. Sometimes it will give the equivalent of a blue screen for windows. Other times it will just reboot. [URL] Does any of this mean anything to anyone? Would really love to use fedora because I like it a lot an I'm getting familiar with it but it keeps crashing.
Its a fresh install. All I have done so far is installed updates via Yum, including the updated kernel, installed RPM fusion and I installed my wireless drivers.

When I boot from a 9.10 live cd, I can find the HD and my home folder, but some individual pics it said I dont have premission to move, so is there another live cd, or a way to bypass that?

May 12, 2010I have a Canon Powershot A470 digital camera and can't get to transfer the pictures from it on Ubuntu 10.04. When I had Ubuntu 9.04 I imported pictures from the same camera without any problems. I considered that the problem could be the camera itself or the USB cable, but I have just accessed my pictures from that camera using Windows Vista.
Basically, what I have tried is 1) connecting the USB cable to the camera and the computer; 2) set the command button to the playback position; 3) turn on the camera. Using Windows Vista, this series of procedures opens the camera folder (as a flash drive) on Windows Explorer and this is what used to happen when I was using Ubuntu 9.04. I expected this to happen using the Lucid Lynx, but I didn't get even close. I even opened the Home Folder to see if something new showed up there when I hooked up the camera and turned it on.
Since I'm new with Ubuntu (especially the Lucid Lynx), I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I have read that sometimes we have to mount devices in order to get them to communicate with the computer. Is this one of those cases? If so, how do I do it? Does anyone else have the same model of digital camera? How do you guys transfer the pictures to your Ubuntu-based system?

Debian Configuration :: Cannot Upload Pics To Facebook But Can Download Normally
Apr 30, 2011I am using debian squeeze, with browsers chrome, firefox, and flashplugins installed.
I get online via ipv4 DSL, pppoe(I don't quite sure their relationships), I can browse websites, watch flash smoothly, can download softwares from websites to my desktop PC via the browser chrome or firefox with speed about 200kB/s, if I download an some 700MB ubuntu iso from ftp6.sjtu.edu.cn, it reaches 10MB/s.
The thing is, I can't upload files from my PC to online disks(say [url], [url] via browser (firefox, chrome etc), can't send email with an attach file even as small as 1MB via broser, can't post topics on this forum with attachment, can't upload pics to Facebook.
When I try do these "upload things", the web browser just stays there and doesn't refresh. Some online disks have a instant upload speed of 10kb/s ,then it quickly slow down to less than 200b/s, finally it stoped there ,and say "upload failed, network failure".
Here is my configuration files or test results.

Apr 18, 2010P4 2.4ghz 2.0 ram openSUSE 11.2 KDE 4.3.5 CAMERA = olympus D575Zoom I am not sure that this post shouldn't be under the hardware section or if this only relates to digikam software. Have been using opensuse 11.2/kde4.3.5 for a few months now and for the most part its been good. It [machine and digikam] recognized my Canon xTi and I was able to download pics, no problem.
However, When I plug the usb connection into my Olympus nothing much happens. I had no problems whatsoever in opensuse 11.0 with this camera, it worked with out fail. So now when I plug the usb cable in and then plug in to the camera, this is what happens: The device notifier pops up but the device is not listed. If I open a terminal and do [mount -ls] or [lsusb] or [fdisk -l] these are my results:
