I'm trying to format an external hard disk under Ubuntu 10.04. All starts well, but eventually I get the message:
Error formatting volume
Error creating file system: helper exited with exit code 1:
Error calling fsync(2) on /dev/sdb1: Input/output error
I'm trying to partition/format a new external hard disk for backup and have run into a snag that now prevents my computer from booting. In the description below of what happened please bear with me as I do my best to remember the commands and screen output (which for obvious reasons I don't have in front of me).As root.The disk was subsequently writable. However, I then realized that the default start and end cylinders had resulted in a very small partition apparently occupying some free cyclinders in the beginning of the disk.
So next I ran fdisk again, deleting the sdc4 I had just created and creating a new one instead, this time using the cylinders at the end of the disk. When I exited fdisk I got a message something like that the new tables can only be read upon a subsequent reboot. I ran mkfs again, but not e2label. Indeed using /sbin/fdisk -l, sdc4 still had the small size as defined initially. So I rebooted.
Now when it comes up I get something like "checking filesystems. fchk.ext3: can't resolve 'LABEL=/media/LaCie2TB1'" and am prompted to login as root to correct. I tried to simply delete sdc4 again but that didn't help. I also tried to edit /etc/fstab (using vi, which I don't know at all) but it kept telling me that this is a read only file, even though permissions are rw for root.Can anyone out there help me so that (1) I can boot into my computer, and (2) I can correctly partition and format the hard drive??
I had Ubuntu and Kubuntu installed to dual-boot using the GRUB loader installed by Kubuntu. I mistakenly formatted the Kununtu partition to NTFS in an attempt to install Windows XP in its place without updating grub to pull the files from my Ubuntu partition.
Now, when I go to boot the computer, I receive a the "error: unknown filesystem" and the grub rescue prompts for commands. I've attempted to boot from both a Ubuntu Live CD and a Secured Ubuntu CD with boot repair built into it, but receive the same message both times. I know this isn't an issue with my boot order (I've changed that), and my computer will boot into a Windows XP setup disc (which will not proceed for a different reason)
I'm having trouble getting subversion working on Centos 4.7. When I try to create a repository using:

I've searched the Net, with little luck. Threads seem to suggest that Centos has this flag compiled into the Berkeley DB RPM by default; whereas SVN doesn't want it. Someone, somewhere, must have got this to work and I'm sure it's something really simple I'm doing wrong.

I'd like to know if it's possible in my program (C/C++) to create a filesystem on a partition, maybe with advanced options too. I don't want to call the shell and execute the usual commands to do that, so I wonder if there are some native Linux syscalls or external libraries to do that.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've had a look at some similar threads but as I'm very new to linux they're already a bit technical for me. Sorry, this calls for someone with patience. I gather from other threads that disconnecting an external drive without unmounting is a no-no, and this seems to be the likely cause. Now the disk is read only and I'm unable to change any settings through the usual control panel on ubuntu. I'm just not familiar with the terminal instructions. I tried to cut and past a few command lines from other threads but I got some warnings that proceding could damage data. Like this one: WARNING! Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause SEVERE filesystem damage.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a 250GB external hard drive that I want to format to ext4. It will be used to store back ups of my documents, music and pictures. I tried booting the Ubuntu 9.10 Live CD (amd64) and using gparted to delete the partitions that where on the hard drive leaving only unallocated space, then creating one new partition that was ext4. I clicked apply and after a short time it said all operations completed successfully.
Now the problem is it won't let me transfer any documents onto the hard drive, or even create a folder or file. If I go into the properties of the hard drive, under the permissions tab it says I am not the owner...?
I have this 1.5 terabyte external hard drive. It has some bad sectors and although I keep reading that you can't really do much about them, I'm going to reformat the hard drive. I was just wondering what utility would be best, or because it's NTFS and I need it to be NTFS afterwards, should I just do this on Windows?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to format a 500 GB external drive with gparted in ubuntu 10.10 (I searched & didn't see this issue in the forum). I set up and formatted two partitions, one for fat32, and the other with ext3, which appears to format ok, but I can't use it. Both partitions show up and appear to mount, but the ext3 partition won't accept activity (make new folder, copy in files), while the fat32 partition works fine. Both partitions show up ok when I query in terminal "sudo fdisk -l"

I used a live cd on my home computer to format the 90g of Linux. I'm simply wanting something to learn more about from time to time that I can use on my home computer, laptop, fiance's computer, etc. So the formatting went successful. I have linux on the 90g of hard drive that I wanted it on. The problem is this. When I take the live cd out, when I remove my external hard drive from my computer. The home computer (which has Windows) won't boot. It comes up with a error 21. But now when I boot with the external hard drive I use, I make it to the boot menu and can boot from Windows.I need to be able to boot from Windows on this home computer, since my mother and grandparents use this computer quite a bit. I'm not always going to have my ext. hard drive plugged into this computer, so I need some help if you all know now.

I am naturally happy to pay for your time and trouble and for postage. The WD drive is for storing video footage and will be connected to my Humax Freesat HD Digital TV Box(not a computer), and the Humax Box will only record high deffination programmes in EXT3 format. I'm set in my ways and have been accustom to reformatting harddisks periodically (sector maintainance, etc.) It's worked for me as I've luckily have not had a disk crash in 25 years.My webapp is not helping me with the reformat and neither is Western Digital tech support. I've heard that it was factory formatted with something called Linux ext3. Does this make sense? Has anyone had any experience with reformatting external harddisks being used as a NAS (home use).
View 3 Replies View RelatedHe bought a Kguard DVR and a 2TB WD harddrive (SATA). First I tied formatting it from the DVR itself, but it failed. I then connected it to my computer using an USB2SATA connector, and tried formatting it with gparted. That failed with the message: "No partition table found on device /dev/sdd" When trying to create a msdos or gtp partition table it performs the action without errors, but it doesn't save the changes.
Same thing when using parted. When trying to create a msdos or gtp table (or label) it doesn't complain, but when i try to create a partition or simply use the print command it gives me the error "unrecognized disk label". I allso tried fdisk, but it told me to use parted instead due to the large size of the disk.
What is the recommended filesystem to use when creating a home server/nas?
I'd be sharing files using SAMBA, DLNA Server or some sort of streaming. I'll have two win7 laptops, 2 ubuntu desktops and ps3 accessing the files. Most of the time the server will just 75% read from 25% writing.
Would ext4 be an ideal?
I have to create jffs2 filesystem for ARM.I have already created directories and nodes of devices as well as inittab script for ext2 filesystem. Now I don't know how to proceed from here. How to convert ext2 to jffs2. One more thing, is it necessary to create partition on hard drive on which one filesystem is already present to create one more new filesystem.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am able to create a solaris package and hpux package from directory structure in a specific format rather than spec file but the same i can not do on linux . is there any way to do that . basically i can create the solaris package using command pkgtrans -s "source loc" "package location" all .we do not need any specfile here rather we create the package from the filesystem objects in a proper directory structures. again pkgadd -d option will install the datastream from a package but i did not find the same on linux.

I have a external HDD with eSATA and USB connectors available. I want to use this HDD to store my backups. The HDD should be encrypted (my main system is as well).
So here is what I did so far:
1) I used the following code to create the encrypted LUKS partition with EXT3 Filesystem:

mkfs.ext3 /dev/mapper/luks
The system always hang when I executed the "mkfs.ext3..." command, so I switched the HDD from eSATA to USB and then it worked fine.
2) When I switched on the ext. HDD the first time, the drive was recognized automatically and Nautilus asked for the password. I typed it in as checked the checkbox to remember the password in the future. For the backup I use a nice script that I found in another forum, where I can define a mountpoint and then the script will check for previous backups and only make a incremental backup based of the latest version. The script also mounts the drive automatically. In order to always have the same mountpoint, I want to make an entry in the /etc/fstab using the UUID of the ext. HDD.
Whatever I tried, it doesn't work. What am I doing wrong? Here is my current /etc/fstab

I made the "none /proc/bus/usb..." entry because it was recommended to ensure correct behaviour of the iPhone. Not sure if I need it though.

How should I mount this drive correctly? It will be automounted as every USB device, but that should not be the case. I want the script to mount and unmount the drive.
Whenever I try to write to /opt, /usr/src, or /usr/local, I get "permission denied."

I've been trying to create a wine prefix that is able to be used by multiple users (i.e outside $HOME/* or /home/$USERNAME/*) so that i don't need to re-install programs for every user and use the extra disk space, however when i try to use winetricks in said prefix it complains that my user does not own the directory (even when i set it so that the user is the sole owner)

i have a dell server. its a couple of years old and has a perc 4 raid controller in it. When i do an install it shows the drives configured in the raid 5 configuration. i select the disk and do an auto partition. It goes for about 10min then errors with "error formatting drive volgoup00 the error is serious occurred press enter to reboot" or something like that can remember all the words. It doesn't give any info about the error.
i get the same error on centOs 5.5 and Ubuntu server 10.10
There is a firmware update for the raid controller that i could apply but dell's site was not letting me download it yesterday. Other than that I am not sure what to do. I could try an older version of CentOS 5.4 but i figure someone might tell me how to fix this so i can run the newest version.

I have been browsing trough forums, manuals and people for a few days now wihout success so I thought i give this a go, any help will be very appricieted!
I'm using Matlab 2010a in Ubuntu 10.10. I also have a AVT Marlin F033C firewire camera and want to use the two together. Since most things i will do with the images will be processed in matlab I decided that the best would be if i could do everything in matlab.
The code for capturing a picture is however in c and uses the library dc1394 (usr/lib). Compiling this with gcc works good:
$ gcc grab_gray_image.c -ldc1394
To be able to create a mex-file of it (that matlab can run) I have included "mex.h" in the headers and added the function mexFunction in the very top, this function should do more once it works...:
Choosing "Template Options file for building gcc MEX-files".
When trying to compile i get a few errors but these are easily removed by taking away all the //-comments and all the inline for a few functions (this should do anything for the functionality right?).
After that I am still stuck with this error:
I should probably also note that I needed to rollback to gcc 4.1 since that is the latest one matlab 2010a can handle and now don't get that warning anymore.
In vmware workstation 6/7 (using windows xp as host), how can I map virtual disk of my linux VM? When I try to map it, it maps but when I try to explore it, it gives me an error of formatting!
