I've been trying to create a wine prefix that is able to be used by multiple users (i.e outside $HOME/* or /home/$USERNAME/*) so that i don't need to re-install programs for every user and use the extra disk space, however when i try to use winetricks in said prefix it complains that my user does not own the directory (even when i set it so that the user is the sole owner)
View 5 RepliesI've been happily playing League of Legends, but recently, I've only been able to open it from the terminal. I can run it without WINEPREFIX, like this: Code: wine-1.2-rc7 "/home/peter/.wine-1.2-rc7/drive_c/Program Files/League of Legends/lol.launcher.exe"
However, when I try to add the WINEPREFIX nothing opens. But this command works great in the terminal: Code: WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.wine-1.2-rc7 wine-1.2-rc7 "C:/Program Files/League of Legends/lol.launcher.exe" When I even tried doing "run in terminal" option for taskbar launchers nothing pops up except an empty terminal and an error: "There was an error creating the child process for this terminal."
Not really sure that this is a wine problem or a problem associated with WINEPREFIX, but it was working fine a few days ago, and I've completely reinstalled the .wine-1.2-rc7 directory to no avail.
I've a user account in a remote machine. but it doesn't have a home directory in that machine.Is it possible to create a home directory without having root account details. If yes, how it can be done.

Used Gparted to create the new partition,when I mount the new partitions and checking to see if they are mounted I see that they are. I then cd /old/home and then I use the command (find . -print0 | cpio --null --sparse -pvd /new/). I get the following on all of my files:
cpio: cannot make directory `/new//./dan': Permission denied
cpio: /new//./dan/Music/Patsy Cline: Cannot stat: No such file or directory

I'm about to reinstall Ubuntu and one thing I'd like to do is create a separate partition for /home. also what are the exact benefits of that?upgarding ubuntu doesn't necessarily delete your files right?is it just as a security measure in case the kernel becomes corrupted?

I've never really done much work manually editing/extending/creating of partitions, Soo Im going to need really simple, noob-like instructions if possible. I'm trying to format an external hard disk under Ubuntu 10.04. All starts well, but eventually I get the message:
Error formatting volume

I have been browsing trough forums, manuals and people for a few days now wihout success so I thought i give this a go, any help will be very appricieted!
I'm using Matlab 2010a in Ubuntu 10.10. I also have a AVT Marlin F033C firewire camera and want to use the two together. Since most things i will do with the images will be processed in matlab I decided that the best would be if i could do everything in matlab.
The code for capturing a picture is however in c and uses the library dc1394 (usr/lib). Compiling this with gcc works good:
$ gcc grab_gray_image.c -ldc1394
To be able to create a mex-file of it (that matlab can run) I have included "mex.h" in the headers and added the function mexFunction in the very top, this function should do more once it works...:

When trying to compile i get a few errors but these are easily removed by taking away all the //-comments and all the inline for a few functions (this should do anything for the functionality right?).
After that I am still stuck with this error:
I should probably also note that I needed to rollback to gcc 4.1 since that is the latest one matlab 2010a can handle and now don't get that warning anymore.
What is the recommended filesystem to use when creating a home server/nas?
I'd be sharing files using SAMBA, DLNA Server or some sort of streaming. I'll have two win7 laptops, 2 ubuntu desktops and ps3 accessing the files. Most of the time the server will just 75% read from 25% writing.
Would ext4 be an ideal?
I would like to use an unused desktop running Ubuntu desktop edition as sort of a file server for my house. I don't need to do much other than use it as a networked drive. All of the computers in the house are running either Windows or linux (and a google tv if possible). What programs do I need to use it for this purpose? I've heard something about apache and samba. What else do I need?

View 7 Replies View RelatedThis may be a rookie mistake, but I created a user (new user) in Linux on a Ubuntu system and didn't actually create the home directory for this user. Now, when I log in, it says there are problems... If I delete the path home/<new user> and try to log in the system tells me I can use root as home directory but I will likely experience problems, and then it won't let me log in. What is the best way to create this directory with the appropriate permissions? Should I just create another user and delete this one?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an external hard drive mounted at /media/exthdd/ On that hard drive I have folders: Music, Pictures, Videos, etc. Can I make symbolic links to /media/exthdd/Music/ to say the root directory /_ ? the directory /_ is empty I just want a quick method of typing to get me there much like [cd ~] gets me to my home/username folder. I have my music organized by Artist/Year-Album/Track.Title.mp3 I want to be able to "cd /_" then "ls" and see all Artist folders.

Was recently asked to start weekly backups to an external drive for off-site storage. The regular syncing works but hard linking seems to be ignored. So the backup is long with no space saving advantage. Here is an example of the command being run:
rsync --stats -axzvl --numeric-ids --delete --link-dest=/mnt/DISASTERBACKUPS/austinBackups/backups/2009-08-21 /AUSTINBACKUPS/backups/2009-08-24 /mnt/DISASTERBACKUPS/austinBackups/backups/
Any opinions on this? I think it would be very convenient for me, but I don't want to cripple the speed of my computer if it is going to slow it down substantially.

View 10 Replies View RelatedAs I regularly move between Mac and PC, I thought it would be a good idea to put all my data on an external drive. As Windows 7 and OS X have similar home folder layouts, I just simply put all the folders I need for both on the root of the external drive and changed a few settings so that the Home folder for my user is on the external drive on both Windows and OS X.
Whilst Ubuntu also has a similar structure, I cannot work out how to have it so that my users home folder is on the external drive. I have done a little research and all I can find is how to have the /home directory on another partition. a) this is not what I'm trying to do, just the folder for my user and b) this would mean formatting the external drive to extX format, which just wouldn't work for me.
I am using 9.10 (or will be once the upgrade is complete)

This NAS is 24/7 online and I can access it from the net.More than that it's backed up every day.
I was thinking of making my home directory directly in this NAS.
I didn't made a separate partition for my Home during the installation of slackware in the PC.
I have just had to reinstall my OS (Sabayon) onto a new and larger hard drive (dying old disk). I quickly saved all my old docs in /home on an external USB drive (formatted and then created an ext4 file system) before the swap and installation.
After getting the new disk running I connected the USB external disk. First I could not access the drive at all, but that seems to be fixed. Now I want to bring all my files back to my new /home folder but apparently they (especially the former MS Office .doc, .xls, etc files, not so much the OpenOffice files) are �read only� and I don't have permissions anymore. I am able to create directories on the external, and can move files back and forth, but don't seem to own many of them.Sabayon automatically mounted my external disk in /media/disk, rather than /mnt, so I've left that alone for now. After searching here and elsewhere for info, I tried a few things (below): For access I added a line to /etc/fstab:

i have rhel 5.2 and i want to create user using useradd command without creating user home directory and not throwing any warning/error about not creating any home directory.i have tried useradd -u "$NEW_UID" -g <gid> -d "/home/$1" -M "$1"where $1 is user name and $NEW_UID is i am calculating.it throws error as useradd: cannot create directory /home/$1which i dont want to come , how to prevent this?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an 500GB Iomega external drive connected to my iMac and used for the Mac Time Machine back-ups. I want to put a small partition on there that I can use to back-up my Ubuntu files which are on my laptop. I thought that I would be able to just copy the entire Home file on Ubuntu to this drive be drag and drop but this does not work. I get a notice to inform me that I do not have permission to create file there. I can however move files in the other direction (from the external drive to Ubuntu on the laptop. I assume this is because the external drive was formatted for Mac and I hope the problem will be solved if I could format a part of the drive in ext4 to accommodate the linux files.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently reinstalled Ubuntu 11.04 "Natty Narwhal" Daily 20101124 on my netbook and decided to place /home on an external 500GB SimpleTech hard drive because the netbook's internal SSD is only 8 GB.
Well, when I boot into the main SSD to try and test out the system, I have two problems:
First of all, GRUB is unstable and won't always find the kernel to boot. In particular, I have to hit <Enter> one, two, even three times just for GRUB to find the kernel and boot the system.
However, that's not all:
When the system is booting, I wait endlessly for X to start. It doesn't. The Plymouth splash screen stays there and it looks like the system is endlessly booting with no progress.
Suggest chrooting into the drive and doing a "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" by any chance? This being in order to make the system on the drive up-to-date? If so, I will see if it boots.
I work at a local computer shop as a computer technician and we get many computer in daily that require external virus scans (having to take out the hard drives, sticking it in another machine) just to scan (if we're lucky we can sometimes just do it in safe mode).Now what I want to know is...
1. Is it possible to install Ubuntu to an external HDD and use it virtually anywhere I plug it in? Will it pick up the network card, graphics card, etc so I can just plug and go? (Of course there are drivers for some computers).
2. Is it possible to run a Windows oriented virus scanner on Ubuntu? I know I can use WINE to run Windows applications, but will it prove to be compliant with virus scanners as well?
3. The main reason why I want it to be able to pick up on hardware and just work is because I plan on using it for schooling / travelling as well, have all my documents etc saved on it for easy access.
I've used Ubuntu in the past on an old laptop that didn't have much memory, small HDD, and a crap processor but that was 5-6 years ago (I still have the disk they sent me for free ).
I installed Ubuntu on external USB hard drive and while booting I did got option to log into windows XP, Ubuntu. Both operating systems ran fine. i.e. GRUB had overwritten MBR and I was able to dual boot. Main issue: I have installed Ubuntu in external hard-drive so that I can use Linux whenever I want other people who are using same computer can operate on WindowsXP. Sometimes my external hard drive gives problem if there is loose connection and so that oper people using computer do not face any problem I want to disconnect external USB HD whenever I am not using Linux. GRUB menu was pointing to external hardrive so disconnecting it meant my system wont boot!!I rewrote MBR using WindowsXP CD recovery mode. Now I am unable to boot from external USB hard disk( I thought I would be able to if I choose USB hard drive in BIOS option but it did not work it logged into WindowsXP by default).Is there any way I can change WindowsXP boot.ini file so that it also shows Ubuntu in external hard disk? Or is there any way.(I do not want GRUB way as then I would have to keep my external drive connected to log into windows - which I do not want).

It was using an external journal, but in re-installing Slackware I removed the partition holding the external journal, forgetting what it was at the time. I didn't touch the contents of the external hard drive, but now I can't mount it and the various xfs programs seem to demand that it be mounted in order for them to change anything.Anyone have any ideas on how to change an xfs partition from external log to internal? Failing that, how do I get the information off it?
