I'm using ubuntu 10.04 64bit server edition running a small dev server. What's happning though is that my one ext4 filesystems reports the wrong amount of free blocks. This is what fsck reports

I have an computer that mounts an external hard drive for backups. The Computer hard drive is about 110 GB; the external drive is 120 GB.
When I do a df -h it tells me there is 97% in use.
Checking the computer harddrive I am using about 52.8 GB (of the 110 GB) 501,579 items, totalling 52.8 GB (some contents unreadable)
The external drive is using roughly 49GB of the 120 GB available.

It seems like the total % is a reflect of total space consumed calculated off of ONE of the hard drives.
My Fedora Core 8 server came with OpenSSH Server 4.7p1 installed. I could not find a YUM package or RPM for 5.2p1, so I installed it manually and rebooted. Now if I do a version check with "sshd -v", it reports it's version as "OpenSSH_5.2p1", but if I connect with Putty, it reports "SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_4.7". Do I have two versions of OpenSSH running or what's going on?

I am using sabayon 5 - 32bit OS. I experience dullness and sluggish performance now and then.So number of free file descriptors is constantly zero , checked by utilising a while loop sleeping for 5 secs.would this be the root cause of the sluggishness I face in accessing application (media player)Also USB transfer is very very slow and sometimes it gets stuck
View 1 Replies View Relatedaccording to the system manager of my machine, one of my ext4 partitions (home folder) reads 7.6GB free but only 574MB available and the disks "fills" when the 574MB are used, and i'm really needing those 7G right now, so:
why does this happen? are those 7G used in anything? any way to allow the system use that free space?
I installed 2 new hard disks and created one ext 4 partition on each of them. After rebooting busybox tells me that there is no /sbin/init.

I keep on getting wrong block / inode size when I do an fsck:

I then force an fsck and the problem is solved, but given a day or two, the problem is back. This can sometime consume up to 10G of my HDD space.

My root partition was filling up, with only 500 mbs left, I wanted to resize my root partition from 20 Gb to 40Gb
So I resized my partition by using these steps:
Using Gparted to resize another partition to give space for the EXT4 Using fdisk, deleting the root partition (on /dev/sda2), and creating it again using the new size resize2fs /dev/sda2 Updating grub2
But now the problem is that although I can boot in my new partition and the new partition shows it is 40Gb, but the free size was still 500mb. So I booted from a LiveCD and checked with e2fsck -p /dev/sda2, it reported clean. So I added the -f flag (force check), still, the drive is full.
I tried using livecd 104 to allocate some free space to the harddrive that contains the files and the os 104

This weekend, I installed Debian Squeeze on my server. I've formatted all the hard disks to EXT4, and I'm using kernel version 2.6.32-686-bigmem.When I tried to install the program saidar, it surprised me why it does not show my hard drives under 'mountpoint' [URL] <-- Saidar screenshot) as I could when I ran with Debian Lenny with the same kernel, but where the hard drives were formatted in EXT3. My laptop which has Ubuntu 10.04 as OS and the hard drive is formatted in EXT4 can easily show the hard drive in saidar.
I also tried to install PHP SysInfo on the Debian computer, but it does not bother to show anything on the hard disks
I tried to check fstab file and I can see that Debian uses UUID to identify the hard drives, but I've tried to change it to something with /dev/sdx, but it did not help either.[URL] (fstab file)
I know that Debian squeeze is very new, but it would be nice if someone could give me a hint what might be wrong, because I am a little tired of all time to use 'du-hs' command To find out how much space is spent on the various drives, since the command is a little slow, since hard disks are well filled.

It's close to full, but not actually full. I can't run a lot of things on this drive because the programs complain that they have no space.
Today morning I logged on to one of our servers (through ssh -X) to perform a routine maintenance. When I tried to open a GUI application, it failed to connect to the X server of the workstation. Eventually I ended up issuing the command

and shockingly it showed that / is 100% used. I checked / using

du --max-depth=1 -xh /
to check the sizes of the individual directories, which showed that only about 18% of the / is used and that confused me badly. There was no quick solutions when I googled around; but luckily I found the following link which nicely explained the issue I had:

All I did was found out the services responsible for those unreleased files (using lsof +L1) and restarted them. That is it. Now df reports only 18% of the disk is used and all my X things started working again, thanks to Walker.

I got a problem booting ubuntu 10.4 RC but i solved it by replacing root partirion uuid in grub boot menu then I disapled totally uuid passing to linux from /etc/default/grub . but something else i noticed why grub choosed insmod=ext2 why not ext4 specially I use now ext4 .I tried by editing the grub boot menu replacing "insmod=ext2" by "insmod=ext4" it booted and the three lines error during booting that i used to see them science ubuntu 9.10 totally disappeared . really I dont understand can anybody explane for me.and if what i did was right ,can anybody tell me how to make grub always and permenantly detect ext4 as ext4 not as ext2.

I've got a question on free disk space. I'm currently running CentOS 5.5 on in Xenserver virtual environment. We've had an issue with disk space. My question is as follows: - from a ssh connection i run df -h this gives the value of 90% used leaving me with 9GB. If I use system monitor via a VNC connection the free disk space value is 20GB free on the same volume. Which one is correct? I do use SNMP to monitor the same volume and should alert me when < 10% is free I know this works as I set the alert threshold to < 90% I get an alert.

When I try to do it the way explained in the guide, it tells me that I'm using a stable version of Xubuntu, and that only people running dev versions (like 11.10) can report bugs.This seems absurd. Are they saying that all stable releases are perfect in every way? Surely one must be able to report a bug for them...
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have 160gb laptop. i installed vista in c primary partition which is 25gb and installed ubuntu in d primary partition which is 20gb. A remainig for my data. Now i tried to install CENT OS by formatting ubuntu. I inserted CENT OS DVD and restarted and i selected to delete my /dev/sda2 which is showing 20480mb and it shown me free space. but i tried to add partion /boot of 100mb it got added. but, when i am trying to add / of 3000mb in the remaining 20380mb free space it showing an error message that no free space is available.

I just did a fresh install of 10.10. I was running 10.04 but formatted that partition when installing from a USB key. Pre-install, I ran:

However, lsb_release is reporting 10.04. When I boot the system it doesn't show the typical boot screen but rather "Ubuntu 10.10" and output of what's loading up. On my laptop (upon which 10.10 installed fine), the splash screen shows the dots loading up with the new Ubuntu splash (10.10 style).
I go into Update Manager, and it thinks I need to upgrade to 10.10. Thing is, I'm already on 10.10. My kernel version is 2.6.35.22 and I'm running Gnome 2.32.00 according to the System Monitor. I'm wondering if I'm getting 10.10 updates or 10.04 updates since my system incorrectly thinks I'm on 10.04.
230Gb HD, I recently partitioned a 90Gb slice, and ran 10.10 on it for a while, but due to not using it, I fired up gparted off a live disc last night and got rid of the partition. I got Gparted to make a 5gb swap, and the rest for 10.04, all is fine, rebooted to 10.04, updated grub, it removed the entry for 10.10, but reports that my hd is only 140gb, and sda2 is a 5gb swap. What gives? Where's my disc space?
