I'm starting to push the limit of my /home directory. My machine is Linux/Windows dual-boot. I need to keep Windows as the machine is not "officially" mine, and so might need to go back at some point to a Windows user. All my normal Windows access is via VirtualBox. I have made my Windows partitions as small as possible, and now have an empty D partition as follows:

View 4 Replies View RelatedHard drive is connected to my Inspiron 1525 via USB, plugged in and I'm not seeing the new drive mounted. Restart doesn't fix things and manually trying to mount /dev/sdb1 doesn't work either. The drive I got is preformatted as NTFS and I've been using a logical partition formatted as NTFS as a sort of share drive between my Windows partition and Ubuntu partition, so I know I have NTFS set up properly. This is the hard drive I'm working with for reference.

Windows server 2008
Ubuntu 10.04 server
I've got VMware installed. And I have spent the past 7 hours trying to figure out how to manage it. I found out that vsphere has not nor will ever be supported for Linux; which was my first problem.
Second Problem So I had to dig around for a spare Windows 7 dvd. To my UN-surprise it blue screened before it even got to the Windows installer.
Third Problem So I dug around for my Windows XP disc. Wouldn't find my sata hard drive and I wasn't about to dig around for a floppy drive and disk, in order to install it.
Fourth Problem I remembered that I had a dual boot of Windows 7 downstairs and proceeded to download and install vsphere. It wouldn't install because of some updates that needed to be installed. I installed them and got vsphere installed as well. However upon connecting to my vmware esxi, there was yet another error that had to do with some update. I found out that the error had been existent since 2009 and for some reason NO ONE at VMware has fixed it....
My wife's XP has crashed and I need to save files. I've discovered the command to mount the hard drive - unfortunately I need to force the mount, but I can't do it because I have to be in root. I can see the root user in the user list, but when I try to switch I can't access it. How I can do it to back up my wife's files. I have Kubuntu 8 and KDE 4.1.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have just installed 11.3 x64. The installation went fine and worked for the first few hours. I ran the online update tool, and now it cannot find grub unless the installation disc is inserted and I select the "boot from hard disc" option.
I have read about the problem of the root partition being back, but not sure that's it.

There used to be a repair tool in the installation disks. I could not find that in this media. Is that still available?
I installed Ubuntu 10.10 with wubi and i have been enjoying my Ubuntu experience a lot. I installed quite a bit of programs and spent a couple hours customizing my machine. The problem is im running out of disc space. Any ideas on how i can add more space. I have gparted but i dont know where to move the free space to because wubi installed it.

This is an odd situation because when I finished installation of Ubuntu the first time (I uninstalled it,) it wasn't responsive and said my hard drive had 0 space on it. I still have about 23GB left on my disk. How do I clear out space so the installation can work properly?

I've added some software packages along the way, such as MythTV and several smaller apps, but have not gone crazy in adding apps. I have a 160GB hard drive.I ran out of disk space recording a World Cup game and was surprised. I deleted all of the MythTV recordings and ran Computer Janitor and now I have only about 50GB of free space! It is not my primary computer, so I don't have a bunch of videos, music, pr pictures on it.
I did a clean install of Ubuntu 10.4 to a USB flash drive and it has only 3.7GB occupied on the drive.Any recommendations of why I have over 100GB on the hard drive and any cures on how to clear out unneeded files?
On a fresh install my 320GB computer shows a 317GB 'File System' a 'Swap Capacity of 3.1GB and 'Free Space' 273.8GB !

The problem occurs when i try to resize my partition to include the now unallocated 370 GB that used to be windows. When i boot from a live cd of ubuntu 10.04 and go into GParted, I right click and hit resize and it will not let me increase the size of the existing ubuntu partition.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI added a 250Gig external USB drive to an old laptop I'm running Ubuntu 6.06 on so I can transfer some big files. It was NSTF and did mount but would only mount as read only. I changed the partition to ext3 with mkfs.ext2 /dev/sda1. I was copying right along when about 680 Megs I get a message i'm out of space. A df doesn't show my usb drive. fstab doesn't show it either. Nothing under fdisk -l either. I can list change to the mount /mnt/usbdrive just fine and get a list. Did I miss a step somewhere when I partitioned? How can I tell how much space is on that drive? I try to do everything with a command line.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI currently have Ubuntu 9.04 installed on my HP Pavilion A1213W alongside Windows XP. Problem is, I no longer need the XP partition (finally) but I would like to reclaim the rest of the hard drive for Ubuntu.
I'm planning on wiping the XP partition with GParted and then (hopefully) I can merge the unallocated space with my existing 9.04 partition without having to reinstall Ubuntu and lose all my stuff. Is there a way to do this? I have nothing to back my hard drive up to other than a 2 gig flash drive.
I installed Wubi 9.10 on my windows 7 net-book and it failed to install, so I found a tutorial and tried again to install Wubi. My problem now is it failed a second time now because I did two attempts of 30 gig installs I am missing 60 gigs hard drive space and cant figure out how to recover the lost space. I have uninstalled Wubi / Ubuntu from programs but still no recovery. It needs to be recovered so I can dual boot properly given that I use Ubuntu and Windows

boot = 130MB
swap = 4096 MB
/ = 26000MB
Should I need separation of root(/). Like: /user, /tmp etc. If, then which media needs more space?? OR what should be the best choice?
How much space does Ubuntu 10.04 take?
I have a 320 GB HDD I use for data apart from the regular HDD for the OS. Of course when you go to format it, it's actually 298GB. So I made a 248 GB partition, ext4 for ubuntu data, and a 50GB partition for Windows.
It shows as 248.01 GiB in size in GParted, with 217.27 GiB used. 30.75GiB unused.
When I go to Computer, right click on the partition, click Properties, it says Total capacity 244.1 GB, 18.3 GB free, 225.8 GB Used.
So:
1) Why does GParted show it as 248GB and the Properties as 244 GB?
2) More importantly: Why does Gparted show I've used 217.27 GBs, while the Properties show I've used 225.8 GB? What's going on there?
