Ubuntu :: Errors "[1150.843478] End_request: I/O Error, Dev Sro, Sector 529005" When Installing 10.10
May 26, 2011
After I installed 10.10 there was a huge amount of Error messages come up before the system automatically restarted. Most were like this : Error [1150.843478] end_request: I/O error, dev sro, sector 529005 THere were at least 2-3 pages of them with various numbers. Is my disk buggered or my system too small? I have a Compaq Evo D510 sff.

I just upgraded to Fedora 11. (I decided to give 64bit a try and I am extremely impressed. Not one problem at all! Kudos to the devs.) Whenever I log in I get the Palimpsest Disk Utility telling me two of my hard drives have a reallocated sector count.I have two 1.5Tb Seagate drives (model #: ST31500341AS). One is a backup of the other. On the first disk the disk utility tells me I have 22 reallocated sectors and 53 on the second. I've been on Google on discovered that there is no easy way to fix this and that a few bad sectors are okay but too many is a sign of imminent drive failure. This obviously concerns me because both my main drive and its backup are showing errors.
I went to Seagate's website and downloaded their diagnostic software (Seatools for DOS) and it passed both of these drives. So, questions: is it possible that Fedora is giving me a false positive? If not, is 22 and 53 sectors something to be concerned about? If so, should I contact Seagate and see if I can pull warranty on these drives? Is there a way to repair this damage?

I have the DVD installer of Fedora 10, i want to dual boot with windows vista. well i get up to the partitioning part of installation (in anconda) and it asks me how i want to partition it... i wanted to re size my partition and create the default format, so i keyd in 70GB and Okay. then it came up with an error, saying I had bad sector(s) The error told me to run chkdsk /f /r in windows, then i could run ntfsresize with -b, (in Linux) well i did all those steps, and shrunk /dev/sda1 to 70gb (/dev/sda2 is my recovery partition) i have a 140 gb hard drive, but can't find the unallocated space anywhere!
when i booted windows, it ran a chksdk, like it should, and in my computer it said that it had been shrunk (because the pie graph showed a capacity of around 70GB) When i go into windows disk management it says no unallocated space, just one big partition (and a 8gb recovery partition) this is the same with GParted on puppy linux, GParted on fedora 10 (live cd) says there is no drives I can mount or unmount and same error on partition logic... in EASUS partition manager i get told that there is no unallocated space, in the fedora installer there is only /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2. Does anybody know.. how to install fedora on this partition, or get rid of the partition and repartition it another way. when i click on the option to remove all linux partitions and create default format, it errors and says it cannot make another primary partition, then says there is no room for /boot. and i can not proceed.

In the past I have been able to succesfully install ubuntu on several external usb drives with up to 500gb in size. Now I am trying to install a copy of ubuntu 10.10 on an external usb iomega 1tb eGo drive but I am having major issues. The installer reports the total disk size as only 124 gb, instead of the 998gb that gParted reports for the same disk. Proceeding with "use the full disk" installs ok, but it doesn't boot.Grub2 reports that it cannot find the kernel. After some desperate attempts to repartition and after some googling I think that the issue may be with the sector size, which fdisk -l reports as 4096kb (all my other drivers report 512kb) and I have the impression that linux is not ready for it (or I lack the knowledge, which seems more likely).I have also tried to install fedora 14. This distribution reports the correct disk size, installs properly, but again, it cannot boot (Fedora uses grub, not grub2), with a very similar message to the grub2 installer.Because of the way I work, I need my external usb drive to be able to boot linux. And I find it difficult to believe that linux doesn't handle 4096kb sector disks, so here I am asking for help . Please note I am not a linux expert.

I created a boot disc (USB drive) with Ubuntu 11.04 and tried to install it on my Gateway GT5012 desktop running Windows XP. It gets to the part where I can "Run Ubuntu from this USB," and I select it. The screen shows "loading vm/linuz..." or something like that, and then the entire screen turns into dots.
One time, when trying to boot from the drive, it brought up
"CHS: Error 0201 reading sector 1418005 (88/68/3)
EDD: Error 4200 reading sector 1418006"
I ran this same USB drive on another computer (also running XP), and it worked just fine, so I really have no idea what's going on. If it matters, the computer it worked on had Internet access, this one didn't. It says "Loading /casper/vmlinuz..." and then goes to the screen of flashing dots.

Gparted won't let me install Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit. Every time it hangs at 47% and throws a sector size error, something like: doesn't support sector size 2048 and the code is HIGHLY EXPERIMENTAL. My 1TB hard drive exists out of the following partitions:
100MB Windows 7 Reserved
900GB+ Windows 7
30GB EXT4
1MB unallocated space
Is there a workaround for this? I've tried installing Linux Mint and Ubuntu but both gave me the same error.

I was using the disk utility on Ubuntu 10.04 and wanted to make by 500GB external NTFS formatted USB drive into 1 x 50GB FAT32 and 1 x 450GB NTFS. I clicked the option that said format or create a partition and it basically wiped the whole thing in a split second leaving me with 500GB of seemingly empty space. Obviously the files are still there but I cannot boot the drive to view anything. I have downloaded testdisk, but don't know how to use it, but I am sure there is a relatively simple solution here. I am currently repairing the boot sector of the drive as Test Disk showed the drive as "no type" i.e. not FAT/NTFS/ext4 etc., but shows the correct amount of used space though, but I cannot view anything err go, I cannot use the undelete command as yet.

I was about to reinstall the opensuse 11.1 since 11.2 was giving me trouble and ran the 'check installation media' and it turned out every disc I burn gives me 'Error Reading Sector 1891680'. This CD-ROM is broken. Looks like there is a problem with installation. I already burned like 5 different DVDs.

2 months ago, I built a dedicated backup server using 4 2TB SATA drives for software RAID5 (6TB total). A few days ago, smartd sent out mail saying it found an unreadable sector on one of the drives. I ran selftest using smartctl and the error persisted. So far, neither software RAID nor ext4fs running on top of the RAID volume have reported errors.
MOST OPTIMISTIC: It is normal to have a few bad sectors among billions. Software RAID takes care of alternatives. Keep using the system until RAID spits a more serious warning in the future.
MOST PESSIMISTIC: It is a really bad sign to lead a disaster. No good disk drive should have bad sectors especially when it is only 2 months old. The error is simply not detected by software RAID and ext4. Replace the drive immediately and return the bad drive to the supplier.

I'm trying to mount my new Western Digital Elements 2tb hard drive, but every time I try to plug it into the computer I get this error message:
Quote:
Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 12: Failed to read last sector (3907027119): Invalid argument
HINTS: Either the volume is a RAID/LDM but it wasn't setup yet, or it was not setup correctly (e.g. by not using mdadm --build ...), or a wrong device is tried to be mounted, or the partition table is corrupt (partition is smaller than NTFS),
[code].....
But when I tried opening the hard drive from nautilus I still got the same error message as above (no other volumes was connected at the time). I've also tried opening and watching it in GParted, and I can see it there as a volume that's not allocated. When I tried to allocate the hard it I got the message that it had no partition table. And that I cold make one. I tried and Ubuntu suggested to make a MS-DOS partition table for it. But there I got a little scared as I've not done this before. The external hard drive is brand new and was brought today. And I don't have the possibility to test it with Windows or Mac as I'm using Linux only on my machines.

I installed Double Commander only to find that it was broken and couldn't launch. So searched and found it was a known problem and fixed already in unstable version. There is a build on Launchpad. So:
Code:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:alexx2000/doublecmd It finished fine. When I reloaded my Synaptic window, it did some work and I saw the first errors: Error 404 in IIRC 3 different places. Then came another error, I didn't understand it and clicked a button. Synaptic closed. I think I know what was the 2nd error because no every time I start Synaptic, it shows a message and after I click the only available button (Close), it quits. The message is:
Quote:
E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/
pl.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_main_bina ry-i386_Packages

I am trying to install Ubuntu to an external usb hard drive (WD Elements SE). I am also choosing to install the grub bootloader to this disk (/dev/sdb) because I do not want anything modified on the internal drive. The installation appears to go okay, but when I try to boot to the usb drive, I get the error, "no boot sector on usb device" and it immediately falls back to my interal drive. I have tried this installation with both 10.10 (amd64) and 11.04 (amd64). How can I fix this?

It may be also worth noting that I dont see the grub screen. My monitor reports "out of range" I also did have ubuntu server 10.10 on here previously which installed without issue. (It wasnt actually being used for anything) I'm currently trying a reinstall hoping the errors will go away but any info would be much appreciated.

I have been having problems with Ubuntu. I just downloaded it yesterday and burned it to CD. However, when attempting to install it, I get errors. Unfortunately, I cannot recall the exact error but it stops the install. I will give further information later but wanted to ask if anyone has heard of this happening and if so, what the problems might be? I checked it with the MD5 and it appears to be a valid file, but the disk is giving me errors!

On a previous thread, I explained how I installed Fedora 14 from the live image disk onto a HP 2140 netbook only to find I was missing the development files. Stoat helped me use the more complete install DVD from Fedora 14 to install the development tools (rather than doing a complete reinstall -- which I would do if it made this work).
Unfortunately, I'm still unable to make PartImage 0.6.9 install. When I try, configure says that the bzip2 library (libbz2) is not found or too old. Apparently, this is because it can't get it to respond to BX2_bzopen from within the library. I think because it can't find the library. Inside the config.log file it seems to indicate that from an -lbz2 not found. Now I'm guessing that there is some trick to this, maybe some way of setting the library path to include the location of this and possibly other libraries under Fedora 14. I've checked the library's location and it seems to be in /lib as far as I can tell and bz2 does work, so it's somewhere. Of course it's possible since PartImage is pre-version 1 but doesn't have much if any activity on its forum that something has changed position in Fedora and the install isn't looking for it in the right place.
I've seen one blurb in the PartImage files that indicates that maybe using env to set environment variables on entrance to configure might work, but I'm not sure what variable to set or how to make it find the bz2 library. Note that I've been a UNIX user and administrator in the past, but that was in the System 7 days so that's rusty and I have no prior experience with LINUX of any kind.

I have played around with Fedora for a few years and recently switched to Ubuntu. I am installing VMWare Workstation version 7.1.0 from a retail packaged CD. When I attempt to install VMWare Workstation and VMWare Player I get the following error:

I tried installing the patch for kernal 2.6.38-8 found here - [URL] - but it did not resolve the issue. Is there a patch for kernal 2.6.38-10?
I also found this posting for the same problem: [URL]. I followed the following instructions as advised in the post . . .
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install make
sudo apt-get install gcc
Then enter:
uname -r
My kernel was: 2.6.38-10-generic
sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-2.6.38-10-generic
Now run the vmware-install.pl script.
Everything ran without error. However, I continue to get the same error. Another post suggested uninstalliung and reinstalling the software, but this had no affect either. Another post suggested that after running the above update to them run the /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl script. However I do not seem to have the vmware-config.pl in my /usr/bin directory. I checked the various VMWARE directories in /etc and the /tmp/vmware-root directories but no vmware-config.pl
