Ubuntu :: Emeral Themes Dissapear On Startup - Restart / What To Do?
Mar 8, 2011
I have recently reinstalled Ubuntu 10.10 with Compiz and emerald themes. I've replaced the default window manager in Compiz with emerald and everything works fine until I shut down and restart. The I have no window theme at all. If I go to the window decorator and reinstall the default manager and then once more enter emerald --replace everything is fine until the next time I restart. I guess that I could just leave everything running but that's not the kind of guy I am. can you give me a hand here?

I just upgraded to Lucid Lynx, every time I restart my computer the title bar disappears and everything is displaced (icons and dialogs opening). If I change Visual Effect from None (My normal setting) to Normal and back, the title bars shows normal, but this happens every time I restart and it's very hard to fix with 70% of the dialog hidden on top.

For some reason the energy manager reset and my computer went into standby overnight, and since the standby on ubuntu is well... terrible. i had to hard restart and it seems i've lost all of my themes. I tried to redownload new wave (the theme I was using), but it seems that when i reinstalled it everything except the icons and the drop down menus work. i don't know much about messing with themes, how i can just easily recover new wave?

I installed the earth sunrise plymouth theme with super boot manager, and it worked, but only when I was turning it off, it still works when I'm turning it on, except it sits there for like 30 seconds blinking an underscore and then the theme starts up and does nothing for about 3 seconds (it doesn't animate or whatever), and then the gdm screen comes up, so why isn't plymouth really working on startup? and is there a way to fix it?

So I have this emerald theme I wanted to install on my Ubuntu 10.4 gnome installation that has compiz. I didn't know how to do this so i looked at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=495997 to understand how to do this and when did the steps which you will see her shortly, I got some errors and my windows broke to the point you can move them, close them and all you see is the menu bar and then the rest of the window down.
Code:
adam@adam-laptop:~$ sudo -i
[sudo] password for adam:
root@adam-laptop:~# compiz --replace -c emerald &
[1] 7435
root@adam-laptop:~# compiz (core) - Warn: Unknown option '-c'

OK I feel silly having to as this as it probably some setting I changed but cant figure out where I did it..
So when I click on the minimise button of an open window instead of dropping to the bottom panel it disapears completely. Likewise if I have say a folder open and then open something new the new one replaces the old one instead of al being available in the panel.
Where do I reset this?

I recently installed Ubuntu (the full version). I liked Wubi a lot, but that's because I just had to press down and enter during startup. After uninstalling it, I went to the full version, but that's been giving me more trouble than Wubi, lol.
First, it replaced my Windows Boot Manager with GRUB (which IMO sucks because it takes like 15 seconds to load the menu and it lags when you want to press an arrow key). Second, it screwed up my Windows (the first time I started up Windows I got like 50 lines of errors and after that I had to do the disk check thing but now it works). I use Vista x32, and when I try to boot into Windows it gets to the (C)Microsoft with the green loading bars thing and after about 5-10 seconds my computer randomly (without warning, the screen just turns black) restarts. Goes back to the BIOS menu, a full restart.
My first priority is to get Windows fully running without restarts during boot time. Then I'd like to use Windows boot manager to start Ubuntu (I checked with EasyBCD, Ubuntu doesn't show in WBM.
Oh BTW, dual-booting ubuntu 10.04 and WinVista SP2.

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 as a web/ftp/etc server. I like to work on stuff from remote locations and have set it up to be accessed it with the external IP address by my laptop. The problem is that if I'm at a remote location and tell it to restart, when it boots up it won't log me on unless I enter the password, but I can't remote access it until I'm logged in.So, is there a command or script that I can run that will tell it to restart and bypass entering a login password?I'm only looking for something to bypass it ONCE per command/script, NOT to disable my password.

I would like to install a new icon theme without effecting my currently selected panel theme, as i think the Ambience panel theme looks really nice and unified but im not too keen on the Ubuntu-Mono icons. Is this easily possible, without going into my icon folders and replacing all the instances of one style for another? Are there any applications for gnome icon theming like OS X's Candybar?Im sure others must desire to change only the icons and perhaps it is really easy and this is why i couldnt dig anythin up on google, that or im a useless googler.

Since of late "Appearance preference" behaves awkwardly . Normaly It is supposed to show themes in /usr/share/themes right? but now it shows themes only in ~/.themes folder. I don't know what affected the change. how do I configure it as to show themes in /usr/share/themes/,?
Also whatever theme I use , Controls would stay same(Classic controls). They wouldn't be update to those of the Theme used.

I have just finished the upgrade of the latest version and I'm at the point of my system restating.
My system automatically tried to restart but on the restart I got the 'terminal' view. It stopped when asking for my username (it never normally asks for this before the grub menu) and then password. I didn't get any further than that.
I now have on my screen (still in the terminal view before the grub menu)
"name@name-desktop:...$ "
I'm on my phone now so I don't actually have the symbol for before the dollar sign but your know what it is. The raised S on a 90 degree angle.

I have a suspend problem in my laptop. Sometimes, when resuming from suspend, the network adapter is down (that is, the network does not work and the light of the network adapter is off). Restarting the network service doesn't work, because I think that the system forgot about the hardware, and probably the driver should be reloaded.Does anyone knows how to do that?(ps. /etc/init.d/networking restart does not work, because the hardware driver is not being recognized anymore).

Whenever I choose "Restart" from the GDM screen, GDM appears to shutdown, and the first TTY is displayed with a login prompt at the bottom (assuming I haven't used that TTY). I am by no estimation a patient individual, but I waited a solid minute or two for something to happen, but nothing ever did. I end up logging in as root on that TTY and running "shutdown -r now" to get the job done. This is a shared computer, and ideally any user should be able to perform shutdown options graphically from GDM.The only mentioned workaround doesn't apply to me as I am using the nvidia driver, not intel.

whats the difference between restarting/stopping apache using 'service httpd restart/stop' and apachectl restart/stop. I know that using 'service httpd restart' is actually a script in /etc/init.d/httpd but what about apachectl?

I want to theme my Ubuntu. I have heard that Emerald is good for this, but I just don't understand how to use it.
There is a theme there already called "Beryl Red" (I assume it's a default), but there is no button to install or use it.
