Aug 4, 2011i have been using ubuntu for just over 3 months now and i completely love it. but heres where the problem starts (and please let me know if i am in the right topic) i recently installed ubuntu 10.10 on my roommates computer, the reason being is that the IT department here on college "fixed it" for him, now it wont connect to the internet. it will however connect if we use an ethernet cable from the other laptop to his. his had originally windows xp then got upgraded to vista. i was wondering if there was a way to completely reset the networking wifi card if that might be the problem.
my roommates computer is a DakTech PlaidBook, however i do not know on how to check the system information in the terminal to tell you what wifi card he has and such, all i want is to have internet back on his computer again.

Aug 5, 2010In top, I can see programs that are sleeping but are taking up memory and CPU. If a program is sleeping then how is this possible? Maybe it might have some memory reserved but then what about CPU? Also, it says there are four users, but I can see only two users, myself and root. How can I find out who the other two users are?

System start/stop links for /etc/init.d/ccpd already exist.
I checked in /etc and I do not have the rc.d dir! I have rc0.d through to rc6.d and rcS.d dir, but no rc.d one. Is this normal? and if so how can I get the correct file to start/stop the ccpd daemon for the printer? At the moment the print command brings up the printer icon for about ten seconds and then it disappears and nothing happens.

Mar 18, 2010I have installed an HP LaserJet 4250 using the hp 4250 postscript driver. The printing works but when I click on File->Print on any application (Open Office or Document Viewer), the message "Getting printer information" is beside the printer name and the print button is disabled. After 5 or so seconds, the print button becomes enabled and I can print. This happens every time but did not when I first installed the printer. I would prefer to determine the cause rather than delete and re-install the printer.

Ubuntu :: Failsafe Terminal To Install NVidia Driver
Mar 4, 2010My new laptop (ASUS N71Jv) refuses to install Ubuntu 9.10 - it just produces a black screen. I finally managed to get it on there somehow by installing it in safe graphics mode, so now I have to stare at 1024x768. NVIDIA has a new driver (195.36.0 available that may support my graphics card. When I try to install the executable nVidia driver from a terminal, it rightfully complains that X server is still active. Ctrl-alt-f1 or sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop produce a black screen and a frozen cursor, /sbin/init 3 does nothing.
So what I want to do is simply install the nvidia driver while not being in gnome.
I suspect that my xorg.conf file does not allow anything but 1024x768 (safe graphics mode). It's very frustrating. Any ideas how I can install the driver while being in simple failsafe command line mode or something?

Mar 14, 2010I was having issues with xscreensaver, desktop background and VLC all cutting out at same or different times and narrowed it down to "possibly" compiz or the FGLXR ATI driver that was recommended for my ATI HD3200 card. So, without knowing better, i went into hardware settings and removed the proprietary driver and did a reboot thinking the system would come back up and default back to a vanilla driver. No dice. Hello white screen of death! So, i am assuming that I can just reinstall via terminal and life will be good again? So, looking for CLI commands via terminal for reinstall.. (if possible)

Alas I need help telling the terminal what to do. It came with instructions that the modules and firmware need to be set up or injected into the kerenal.

May 15, 2010I'm not sure what Nvidia driver I installed the other day, but it's messed things up. After Ubuntu boots up and asks for login, I am greeted with terminal. Setting 1152Xwhatever resolution failed. Setting to 1024X768. My xorg.conf.old file is completely empty, so I have no idea what the original settings were. I have tried removing and reinstalling xserver.xorg but that hasn't seemed to get me anywhere. I have also used the "apt-cache search nvidia" command to see what drivers could be installed, but every single driver that I attempt to remove isn't installed.

Oct 15, 2010I have been bashing my head against the keyboard for over 6 hours now i just got a brand new asus ul30v it uses Nvidia geforce G 210M.
I went straight to installing ubuntu 10.10 on the whole disc. when the installation was complete i was happy and logged in. only seconds after i logged in i was promted that i was recomended to install a driver for my graphic card, for 3d and such. so i followed the installation and was asked to reboot. so i did. but then ubuntu booted straight into fullscreen terminal.
While being in this terminal i have tried to purge and reinstall GDM amongst endless other things, including rebooting several times.
Not being able to do anything about it, i reinstalled, and repeated the installation of the driver. same story over again.
Bottom line is i have rebooted close to 30 times, and reinstalled over 5 times. ive tried installing from the terminal (excactly the same story). tried to download it from their homepage, then install it (couldn't install it because i had to turn off driver X and "terminate all OpenGL applications", wich i dont know how to do. tried googling it, but ended up worse than before..[url]
Im guessing i cant install the driver at all with ubuntu 10.10? i havent tried it with older ubuntu versions because, of course, i wanted the newest version.
I have barely been using ubuntu before, although i've had it dualbooted.
I have found alot of posts with people getting stuck in terminal on boot, but none of the solutions that worked for them worked for me, probably because they had different problems than me.

Dec 10, 2010Linux-goers. I did some research on this, but I am still fairly new to Linux. In Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick), I accidentally overwrote my "/bin/bash" file. Dude, using "sudo" with a small typo can work disasters. Bash is now broken in the Terminal (gnome-terminal). Terminal itself still works fine, technically, but bash is still hosed/broken. Here is what I did to try to fix it: Booted from Ubuntu 10.10 live CD. Mounted my Ubuntu partition and manually copied the good/fresh "bash" file onto my hard drive. Verified copy was successful. Didn't help, as you see. Reinstalled "gnome-terminal" using synaptic package manager. Tried to reinstall bash via synaptic, it failed with error, "E: /var/cache/apt/archives/bash_4.1-2ubuntu4_i386.deb: subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 2"
In Terminal, all basic commands work as far as I can tell. ("ls", "pwd", navigation, etc.) Here are some problems:My "username@computername" does not display in the prompt; only the $ sign. Bash keyboard shortcuts such as uparrow and tab do not work. Instead, each inserts a key code. I can't even move the cursor left/right. Aliases (a function of bash and .bashrc) are broken, of course. My sanity level decreases when I use Terminal now. For what it's worth, even with "sudo" I get a "permission denied" error when trying to run Google Chrome! I read something about a ".bashrc" file being a possible problem, but I don't know how to make it work, or the file's proper locations in Ubuntu 10.10. Is there something I can do with a "make" or "apt-get install" command or something?? Could this simply be a permissions problem? Is the link to "/bin/bash", "/bin/sh", or a ".bashrc" file broken? Guide me, oh Linux gurus.
P.S. I always wondered what exactly bash was and how it was different from the basic terminal. LoL, this is an excellent way to demonstrate the difference, and I WANT IT BACK!

Nov 6, 2010I'm using 10.04, and gnome-terminal GNOME Terminal 2.30.2 . I have irssi running on screen session on remote host. And I've been struggling for quite many days to configure it to produce either visual feedback or ring terminal's bell when I receive a private message or one of those that are highlighted.
My compiz settings window in General tab has 'Audible bell' checked.
My GNOME terminal has 'Terminal bell' checked.
I also added 'set bell-style audible' to my ~/.inputrc
And I also tried to manually load pcspkr module into my kernel.
No of the above helped or at least I haven't been able to notice any difference.
I also used some commands for irssi to produce bell sign.

A quick search of my system and the web didn't reveal anything. i didn't find a gconf setting to control this. A quick look at the source code didn't help much either.

I believe the command when using the CLI is:

Feb 10, 2011i started using computer when it was all dos driven so thought i was going to be fine using the terminal in ubuntu the problem i am facing is i can not quite get my head round why is it if i load the terminal. and the first this i type is dir or ls it gives me a list off directories. So why is it if i type cd /pictures i get no such file or directory ? Confused
This also bugging the jebus out off me is i am trying to get into my usb pen drive from the terminal to run a program i have on there.
so i type cd /media
then typed ls
is displayed New Volume <-- This being the name off my pen drive
i have tried every this to get into there but the commands i would use in dos are not playing ball.
Can some one please explain how to get into my usb pen then tell me were i can go read on this as i really can not get my head around this at moment.
