Ubuntu :: Drive Disappears In Lucid But Drive Designation Skipped

Aug 23, 2010

I have only been using Ubuntu since shortly after Lucid was released. I am a new convert and use it to run a back-up device / media server I have a total of 5 hard drives in the device. I have the Lucid system files written to /dev/sde. I am running a Raid 1 array with mdadm on /dev/sdc and /dev/sdd. I have been prepping to run a second raid 1 array with /dev/sdb and /dev/sda with the ext4 file system. I formatted /dev/sda to have a full partition of /dev/ sda1. I then went to do the same to /dev/sdb and the drive was missing from both gparted and the native disk utility. My array with sdc and sdd is still running with both drives working fine.I swapped the sata cable from sda and sdb with no change. The system will not recognize sdb no matter what I do but it does skip /dev/sdb in boot up which tells me it does see it.I have provide the output of the commands df, fdisk -l, and cat /proc/mdstat.

Ubuntu :: Drive Designation Changes Every Boot?

Oct 13, 2010

I have a line in fstab to auto mount a drive partitian

/dev/sdb1 /media/Data ext4 defaults 0 2

This worked fine until I upgraded to 10.10.

Now every boot I get the following message on the purple boot splash screen;

/media/Data is not ready yet or not present

S to Skip M manual etc

When I looked at gparted the drive had changed from sdb to sdf. I changed fstab and then ran sudo mount -a I then access /media/Data as expected, that is until I reboot then I get the same message and find that the drive has swapped to sdb again.

This happens every boot, If it was sdb on the last boot it becomes sdf on this boot and vice-versa.

Unbuntu 10.10 upgraded from 10.04 (64 bit)

Ubuntu :: External USB Drive Disappears / Get That?

May 4, 2010

Ubuntu 10.4 x86
External USB Panasonic OneTouch 4 HDD formatted Ext2

After rebooting the computer the USB external HDD I use for backup appears and is accessible at /media/OneTouch 4

A few minutes later I check and it's unmounted itself (apparently) because it's no longer there.

Restart the computer and it appears for a while once again, then disappears.

General :: USB Hard Drive Sleeps And Disappears In Ubuntu

Jul 22, 2011

I have very small ARM computer with Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty) running as a backup and media server for my house. I have attached a new "WD My Passport" 750GB USB drive to it. The drive is recognized and I can mount it and read/write files fine. After several minutes, the drive goes to sleep, even if I was in the middle of writing a backup to it. I can force it to start again with sdparm, but it needs to not shut itself down while it's being written to in the first place. I have tried this command to disable the standby state but it doesn't work:

root@Plug:~# sdparm --clear STANDBY -6 /dev/sdb
/dev/sdb: WD My Passport 0730 1008
change_mode_page: failed setting page: Power condition

I have also been told to change /sys/block/sdb/device/allow_restart from 0 to 1, but no such file exists and one cannot be written there. The hardware itself is fine, if I plug it into a Windows computer, it will not sleep while in use.

Ubuntu :: External Optical Drive Icon Disappears When Inserting Disk?

Jan 31, 2011

I have an external CD/DVD usb drive and as soon as I insert a disk (I've tried both CD and DVD), the drive icon disappears (unmounts?).I thought it was a bus power issue because it is a mini laptop (Asus Eee PC). This small/slim external drive has two USB cables, one for power and one for power/data. So, I plugged the power cable into my nearby Windows desktop computer and just the power/data into the Ubuntu PC.

Ubuntu :: CD/DVD Drive Won't Mount After Upgrade To Lucid?

Jun 14, 2010

I'm running ubuntu Lucid Lynx on an asus K50IJ series laptop. I'd had jaunty before and made a fresh install of lucid. My CD drive had been fine in jaunty, but doesn't mount any more in lucid. I have found numerous threads with promising-looking titles, but they either do not match my problem or their solutions don't work for me.

This is my situation: The disc will turn for a bit after inserting, then stop. During that, the little light on the drive will flash a few times, then wink out. So I guess the power supply's fine.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Lucid Will Not Start From USB Drive

Sep 4, 2010

I have just downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid and I tried installing it on my desktop computer from a live USB stick created with Universal USB Installer under Windows 7. The startup menu loads fine, but then I select "Run Ubuntu from this USB" or "Install" and Ubuntu freezes on the startup screen after about 30 seconds - 1 minute. The problem is my computer because Ubuntu Lucid does starts properly on another machine when booted from the same USB drive. I can also start correctly other live distros such as Parted Magic or Clonezilla.

Ubuntu :: Lucid Upgrade Change Drive Order And Broke Mdadm?

May 19, 2010

I have 4 drives in my system. Two are SATA and configured in a RAID 1. This is my main drive for the system. The other two drives are IDE drives used to bulk temp storage. Before the upgrade my RAID drives were:

/dev/sda
/dev/sdb

I'm not sure what the IDE drives were. Now after the upgrade the IDE drives are:

/dev/sda
/dev/sdb

and the RAID SATA drives are:

/dev/sdc
/dev/sdd

Needless to say on reboot the raid blow up and the system would not boot. I was able to get it working for now by removing the IDE drives. My current mdadm.conf file is as follows:

DEVICE partitions
ARRAY /dev/md1 level=raid1 num-devices=3 UUID=20fd5b92:860d9ca3:57d3b65c:14fcf2fb
devices=/dev/sda2,/dev/sdb2
ARRAY /dev/md0 level=raid1 num-devices=3 UUID=16401201:52cf4cc0:27286d7a:ac5234f7
devices=/dev/sda1,/dev/sdb1
MAILADDR root

Now I assume that I could change the devices to the new devices names. However I was hoping for a better way to do this. The IDE drives are only semi permanent. Is there a way to configure mdadm with partition labels like you can in fstab?

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot Windows 7 From An External Drive After Installing Lucid

Aug 11, 2010

i currently have lucid installed on my laptop hard drive. i took this drive out and then on a new drive in its place i have installed windows 7. reason why i couldn't put windows 7 on the same drive is that i have a BIOS based system and the hard drive is GPT based not MBR. therefore, i couldn't get windows back on it.

I figured that using an esata expresscard interface i should be able to use the Windows 7 drive externally without much speed penalty since ExpressCard in my case is implemented on PCI Express and not USB.

So i can update grub using
Code:
update-grub

and Windows 7 appears on the list. However, when i select this option during boot, it gives me errors that indicates that the external drive cannot be found (not surprising)

My guess is that when GRUB appears, the external hard drive has not been detected yet, and the modules for the expresscard may only be loaded during the boot process of lucid.

So I am wondering if there is anyway I can get this to work. meaning use lucid on my main drive and boot to Windows 7 from the external drive time to time.

Ubuntu Installation :: Getting Lucid Dual Boot On Hard Drive With Errors And XP

Oct 23, 2010

I'm trying to create a dual-boot system, and have been following the instructions here. However my hard disk has bad sectors, and GParted won't let me resize the Windows partition. It tells me to use ntfsresize with --bad-sectors as an option, after having done some checks, all of which I've done. I've successfully shrunk the NTFS volume in this way -

when I boot into Windows, it says the hard drive is the size I set it at. However, the Ubuntu installer and Gparted still see the Windows partition taking up the entire hard drive. So, for the installation, do I have to set the size of the volumes manually, or is there a way to make Ubuntu see what ntfsresize has done?

Hardware :: External Maxtor Hard Drive Fails To Load Windows 7 And 10.04 Lucid

Jun 17, 2010

I have a Onetouch 4 mini 160GB I bought a year ago. I t used to work fine but all of a sudden it started to become a problem device. My home pc has two operating systems on it: Windows 7 and ubuntu 10.04 lucid. the drive often fails to load on both systems. Sometimes it's recognized, but the reads are very slow and opening a folder on the drive takes around 120 seconds. Itried reformatting the whole drive, chicking it with chkdsk but it didn't help. Now I have around 70 GB of data on the drive. On my office pc I don't have such a problem and the drive works fine.

My home pc has an Asus P5B motherboard and intel core 2 duo cpu. I tried unplugging other usb devices, plugging in the extra power cord (data + data/power) and it didn't help. The drive also makes beeping sounds when I try to browes the files on it. I'm sure thid is not OS related as both Windows and Linux have the same issue. This is the output of dmesg | tail command on linux. You can see the os keeeps "resetting" the drive:

Ubuntu :: Cloning To Advanced Format Drive With 4096 Bytes From 512 Byte Drive

Jun 27, 2011

I am getting a new 4kb sector HDD for my laptop, WD scorpio black 750gb, I would like to image existing partitions on 512bytes sector HDD and move them to the new 4kb sector HDD, what's the best way to do this.

present config is as follows:

Disk /dev/sda: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders, total 156301488 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

[Code].....

I am planning to keep the same three partitions as the primary partitions on the new drive and add few more logical partitions. I would have liked to move to GPT but since I need Win 7, I am stuck with MBR partiotion table.

Now, I understand how to partition an Advanced format disk, what I want to know is how to move the existing partitions on the 80 Gb disk to the new disk?

I use Clonezilla to copy partitions but it is not compatible unless both the target and the source disks are already using 4096 sector size.

I can use Acronis True Image WD Edition to clone Win 7 but how do I clone Ubuntu?

Also my Laptop's chipset is limited to SATA 1.5, will it cause any issues, I know the bandwidth is not an issue.
